This theatre/temple was discovered in the year 2000 behind the small town of Pietravairano, in the heart of Campania, on top of Mount San Nicola in Italy. Dated at the end of the s. II early I B.C. It had a capacity of approximately 2000 spectators. Spectacular its location on top of the mountain at 409 m above sea level.

El teatro-templo de Pietravairano

Se edificó entre los siglos I a. C.-I d. C., empleando la pendiente natural del monte San Nicola, Campania, Italia. Se atisba que el teatro fue construido en una terraza inferior, mientras que el templo en una superior. Puesto que el complejo se erige a 410 m de altura, aproximadamente, resulta una obra espectacular que vincula arquitectónica y directamente a dos construcciones tradicionales de la arquitectura grecorromana. Asimismo, se ha sugerido que la construcción se inspira, en parte, en el teatro samnita de Pietrabbondante.

Hallazgos de tumbas en el teatro-templo de Pietravairano permiten entrever que desde el siglo II d. C. el complejo perdió su funcionalidad. De hecho, el teatro-templo no sería encontrado hasta 2001, cuando Nicolino Lombardi, historiador y aviador, sobrevoló el municipio de Pietravairano y sus arrabales. Desde el descubrimiento se ha procurado mejorar el acceso al complejo, que ofrece una vista formidable.
