Enemies At First Sight Again And Again
Stede flips through the journals from the gift shop as his student take their quiz. He's reading all three of them at once in bits and pieces, since they're mostly compilations of very short stories and facts. He gets to one section in the volume of stories by pirates themselves, and his eyes widen.
Expert from a diary found in Barbados, dated 1717:
We've been almost a fortnight aboard The Revenge, and I'm starting to suspect that (Captain*) has no intention of ending (The Aristocrat's*) life. If I didn't know better, I'd says he's become somehow seduced by this imbecile.
*- Names were illegible in original text. Titles have been chosen based on cross-references with other texts.
An aristocrat? Seducing a pirate? How the devil did this person accomplish that?! And was- yes, the next section says it's likely the aristocrat was no beautiful young woman, but by all evidence likely a man around Stede's own age!
Stede himself can't even seduce an imaginary potential partner, much less could he seduce a pirate! ... Then again, perhaps this centuries-old aristocrat had a bit more going for him than an unfinished theatre degree and lifelong dedication to What Dead People Used To be Up To.
"Professor?"
"Hmm?" Stede doesn't look up yet.
"Are you alright?"
Stede looks up this time. The young woman from the other day, Krystal, is staring him down in the most concerned way Stede has ever experienced.
"Why do you ask? In fact, why are you looking at me and not your paper? This isn't one you can take home to finish, keep in mind."
"I finished it. You look kinda... scrunched, Professor."
"Scrunched?"
"Yeah."
"Well, just... perplexed." Stede pats his book. "Picked this up at the museum, and the accounts from pirates themselves are different than I expected."
"How so?"
"Well... this passage here suggests an aristocrat seduced a pirate captain. Obviously we discussed pirate romances and matelotage before, but that was between sailors. In this case, one party is mostly likely completely unused to seafaring, and yet still somehow drew in a pirate captain. Fascinating, and completely baffling!"
"Maybe he was just handsome?"
"Possible, but the passage implies a former plan to execute the aristocrat."
"Maybe he knew and it was a survival tactic," another student, Powell, chimes in. "Or a plot of later betrayal."
Stede feels an odd... pang, in his chest, at the thought. "Let's not assume the worst here, Powell. That would be rather devious."
Powell shrugs. They push their quiz aside. "Read us the passage?"
"Not unless everyone is done with their quiz before the end of class."

Stede has never had a quiz finish so quickly, in all his classes. Soon he's finished reading the short passage, and hands are filling the air.
"Powell, since this was your idea, you start us off." Stede gestures at them.
"I think the writer is jealous of the aristocrat."
"Interesting. Care to elaborate?"
"The way they use the phrase 'If I didn't know better' seems to imply a close relationship to the pirate captain, and the use of 'imbecile' feels very personal."
Stede nods. "I would agree with that analysis."
"I think the writer is experiencing less jealousy and more... concern," another student by the name of Leilani pipes up. "It sounds like there was a plan that got abandoned. That can't be a good quality in a pirate captain."
"Another good point! Improvising is difficult on the high seas." Unlike sometimes accidentally slipping into present tense when discussing piracy, a habit of Stede's that he's long since stopped trying to correct.
"But flexibility is needed in leadership," Krystal argues (politely, Stede has taken great care to foster the idea of Polite Academic Disagreements in his class). "Without the ability to adapt, how would they manage if a raid went wrong? If a ship had more defenses than previously thought, or more men?"
"Excellent point as well." Stede sits back, then, and lets the students discuss it amongst themselves for the most part, only chiming in slightly when it's needed or he wants to build on one their thoughts himself.

The line for the museum is long that weekend.
Stede finds himself waiting in a throng of others, and realizes why when he catches a glimpse of a poster: the museum is giving out free cupcakes with every year-long passage purchase. And the orange cake on the poster looks divine.
At the front, he doesn't even recognize some of the people manning the sales. He's quite sure they're not regular employees, by way of their hastily-scrawled non-permanent nametags. Probably just hired for this particular rush.
Suddenly Stede is shoved to the side. "Out of my fuckin' way," a voice growls, pushing through the crowd.
And oh, Stede is a very passive man, but something about that voice piques his irritation like nothing he's ever known. "You bumped into me, arsehole."
He doesn't say it very loudly, but the offending man stops and turns around. He scowls at Stede, a dark look in his eyes. Again, it just makes Stede feel an uncharacteristic flash of irritation.
"What'd you say to me? Fancy boy?" the other man snarls, stepping close. He's shorter than Stede, but twice as intimidting. And yet-
"Arsehole," Stede says again without flinching. "Or would you prefer dickhead? Your choice, since it's what you'll be known as in my mind forever."
The other man gets as close to Stede's face as possible. "What I'l be known as in your mind if fuckin' Hell incarnate."
"God, you're dramatic. How about you just stop cutting ahead and wait your turn?"
"I don't wait turns."
"Hey man." Someone else in the crowd, some American Stede has never met, puts their hand on the other man's shoulder. "Fuck off and get back in line. If you throw any punches you'll start a riot."
"Is that supposed to scare me?"
"Your fucking funeral, I guess. But the city cops just got some new shit. I dunno where you're from, but where I'm from they love excuses to test their new shit."
The short man keeps looking Stede in the eyes, fuming for a moment longer. "... Fuck this," he spits. "This isn't fuckin' over." He disappears back into the crowd, heading away from the museum.
Stede huffs, tugging his jacket by the hem. "Thank you."
"Whatever. I just didn't want my teeth broken."
Well, perhaps not quite a Good Samaritan, but still a good thing that happened! Stede directs his attention back to the museum, patient once more.

"Glad you fuckin' made it, man." Ed leads Stede through the crowds, back to the Employees Only area and to Ed's office. "Almost worried the crowd would swallow you."
"I worried about that too, actually. Luckily there was only a handful of people acting poorly. Oh, and one complete arsehole! I wanted to punch him!"
"You wanted to punch someone? Fuck, man. Must've been a real dickfuck."
Stede laughs. "That's a good one. Dickfuck. I should use that."
"Feel free, man." Ed looks up as the door to the office opens. IN comes, presumably, Roach, with an entire orange cake. Just for Stede and Ed.
"Forty orange glaze, ten orange cake," Roach says proudly. He looks at Stede. "If you taste anything other than oranges, it's something wrong with your tastebuds."
"I'd imagine so." Stede's eyes are wide. "Forty oranges just for a glaze? This cake alone could treat a whole crew for scurvy!"
"If only. Enjoy, Ca- Boss and guest." Roach takes his leave.
Stede begins to cut a slice, but Ed hands him a fork. "Just go for it, man. Just us two sharing it."
"Oh." Why does that feel so... intimate? ... Stede takes a bite. "Fuck off!"
Ed barks out a startled laugh. "Fuck off?"
"As though I'd ever miss the orange flavor!" Stede gets a bigger bite on his fork this time. "What in hell's bells was Roach talking about?!"
"He's had complaints before."
"By whom, a coal miner?"
"Coal miner?"
"They lose the ability to taste as well because of mining conditions."
"That's fucked."
"Very fucked." Stede takes another heaping bite. "Which would you rather be? Coal miner, or pirate?"
"Neither are fuckin' ideal, mate."
"Mmm, fair."
"Maybe miner. Lot of fuckin' bloodshed with pirates."
"Lots of it. But if it could be done without so much bloodshed?"
"... Just depends on little things then, I guess. ... I dunno. Do you?"
"Not a clue." Stede mulls it over as he chews. "If I could avoid too much bloodshed, I think I'd be a pirate. More sunshine. Maybe even cakes like this, if looting was good enough!"
"And... if it wasn't avoidable?"
"... I might still pick pirate. Something about the open seas, the freedom of it all... but, I'm romanticizing. I'm sure if I ever experienced actual violence, in real life, I'd pick otherwise."
"Never experienced any violence?"
"Just some light bullying. Nothing physical, thankfully. Very reputable school, they couldn't afford rumors going around about rowdiness."
"That's good, then. ... And you family?"
Stede shrugs. "I'm not dead."
They weren't the most... nurturing. But they weren't awful, either. He was mostly left in the care of kind-enough nannies. Barely interacted with his parents, really.
"Thank fuck for that." Ed holds up his fork. Stede smiles, and they tap their cake bites together. "I really fuckin' enjoy you being alive."

"Don't give up, man."
Ed sits on the edge of the bed, staring at the back of Stede's head. Stede doesn't react.
Ed looks at the rest of the crew, huddled in the corner. They gesture for him to keep going.
"I know it's fuckin' rough right now, but... we can still fix shit, yeah? Don't listen to the other fuckers-"
"Just telling the tru-"
"Shut the fuck up, Jizzy."
"What'll you do about it? Threaten to sketch me again?"
Ed sighs as the fight escalates, because Izzy fucking loves to escalate it. Stede keeps ignoring it all.
"Please, man. Don't give up. Don't give in."
Stede pretends to be asleep. Not much point. Ed knows he barely sleeps these days. Hard not to notice, when he's sort of forced to be around Stede every single moment of the day, whether Stede can see him or not. But he's always there. Watching Stede just... wither.
Sometimes Ed wonders which of them is more dead. Sometimes he knows.
Sometimes it's wonders if it's crueler to keep trying to help.
