Days 27 through 33, Laguna la Castilla, Triacastela, Sarria, Portomarín, Palas de Reí, Ribadiso de Baixo, O Pedrouzo and Santiago de Compostela

Wrapping up now, the last eight days were a whirlwind of hiking with family and friends through the mountains of Galicia, often through calf-deep, muddy puddles and sideways, nor’easter style rain.

This entertainment segment of the trip - with much food, drink and laughter and including Natalie, Tom, Jessica and Jeff as guest pilgrims - helped as a transition for me away from pilgrim life and back to the real world. Not gonna lie, it’s going to take me a minute to readjust to a regular routine.

Once in Santiago, I received my Compostela that certifies I completed the Camino and I attended the Pilgrim mass, the Botafumeiro swinging 60 meters overhead to disperse incense and the Holy Spirit.

And so it ends. I am thankful to have received the gift of time to make this journey and for all the support and love received throughout that made it possible and so very memorable.

After walking 500 miles in 33 days, my plan is to keep walking. Look for me on the bridge in South Portland on the way to work or crisscrossing the marsh neighborhoods of Scarborough, hanging on to my Camino vibe.

We had a fairly long 15 mile walk to Portomarín and since rain was in the forecast we decided to try for a little quicker pace. But, the day turned out to be beautiful (we beat the rain). Much of the path was tree-lined and also lined with stone fences - picture perfect (a lot of pictures but we are restrained here). We saw quite a few hórreos, unique to Galicia. These are interesting raised buildings for protecting grain. Note that we are now less than 100 km to Santiago. Portomarín is an interesting town in that the town was moved here to allow for the installation of a reservoir.

Tuvimos un camino largo relativamente de 15 millas hasta Portomarín y a causa de la predicción de lluvia decidimos a probar un ritmo más rápido. Sin embargo, el día era hermoso (ganamos la lluvia). Mucho del sendero fue bordeado de árboles y también bordeado de vallas de piedra - perfecto para una foto (muchas fotos pero aquí estamos refrenados). Vimos muchos hórreos, único a Galicia. Éstos son edificios interesantes y elevados para proteger los granos. Da cuenta que estamos menos de 100 km a Santiago ahora. Portomarín es un pueblo interesante porque trasladaron el pueblo aquí para instalar un embalse.

My Camino de Santiago adventures in Spain continue: June 17: I headed for Portomarin, where I did an oil painting of thethe stairs/bridge there. After that I drove to Triacastella, where I walked around for a long time trying to find something to paint. The views that I had photographs of didn’t inspire when I saw them in person. I had a pilgrims menu in the evening and drank way too much wine. But the room was nice because it had a great balcony and I was able to sit out on it and enjoy the cool night air. Día 39: Portomarín - Portes

20,2 km; 472 Höhenmeter hoch, 277 runter

Wir haben zwar doch noch einen Schnarcher ins Zimmer bekommen, aber zum Glück einen sporadischen, der immer wieder einschläft. Die Hospitalera ist sehr süß und braut uns eine ganze Kanne Kaffee, die wir beim Packen trinken. Danach gehen wir in das gleiche Café wie gestern, denn heute haben wir eine Überraschung für die Kinder geplant: in dem Café gibt es nämlich Churros con Chocolate. Das typischste aller spanischen Gebäcke hatten wir nämlich noch gar nicht bisher. Matilda genießt es sehr, die Churros in die Schokolade zu tunken, die so dickflüssig ist, dass der Löffel in der Tasse fast stehen bleibt. Jakob, der wie ich auch keine Schokolade zu mögen scheint, ist erst sehr skeptisch, gibt dann aber für die Churros doch den Daumen hoch!

Durch unser langes Frühstück kommen wir spät los heute, was aber den Vorteil hat, dass wir die Pilgermassen heute verpassen. Die wenigen, die wir heute treffen, sind alles interessante Begegnungen. Wir treffen zwei Gruppen, die mit einigen Rollstuhlfahrern unterwegs sind, es ist unglaublich. Zufällig laufen sie fast zusammen. Die eine Gruppe kommt aus den USA, sie haben sogar einen querschnittsgelähmten Mann dabei, der von 4 oder 5 anderen geschoben und gezogen wird. Zum Mittagessen treffen wir eine Gruppe junger Pilger, die auch mit einem jungen Mann im Rollstuhl auf die selbe Art unterwegs sind, der ein VfB-Trikot trägt. Ich frage sie, ob sie aus Stuttgart kommen, und tatsächlich sind sie aus der Tübinger Umgebung. Respekt vor so einer Leistung!

Die Stecke heute hat es wirklich in sich, ständig geht es hoch und runter, und es wird sicher eine der Top 5 Höhenmeter-Etappen auf dem Camino. Aber landschaftlich ist es wirklich wieder wunderschön, dieses grüne Galicien. Der restliche Weg führt vorbei an unzähligen Eukalyptuswäldern (leider ohne Koalas, was wir immer wieder überprüfen). Als wir im Zielort Portes (5 Einwohner in 2 Häusern und ohne jegliches Handynetz) ankommen, döst Rudi schon an einem der Tische im Biergarten der Albergue und hat selbigen wörtlich genommen. „Isch wart schon seit 5 grande cerveza auf eisch“ ruft er lachend. Wir packen gar nicht erst aus und erzählen, was wir die letzten Tage so erlebt haben. Da sich die Essenspreise in der Albergue gewaschen haben, bestellen wir nur für die Kinder ein Pastagericht, Wein für uns, und fragen ob es ok ist, wenn wir nur Brot für uns bestellen, was wir mit unserer mitgebrachten Wurst und Käse, Rudi hat noch Sardinen in der Dose, zusammen vespern.

Heute haben wir nur ein 3-er Zimmer, wo ich mit den Kindern schlafe. Robert schläft im großen Schlafsaal. Als es Zeit fürs Bett ist, braucht der weinselige Rudi etwas Unterstützung von Robert, der ihm den Weg zeigt und die Treppen hoch hilft. Links ist das 3er Zimmer für Matilda, Jakob und mich, rechts der Schlafsaal für alle anderen. „You go there, I go here“ sagt er und dreht schon in Richtung unseres Zimmers ab. Robert kann ihn gerade noch ins richtige Zimmer lenken.

Kaum liegt er, geht ein Geschnarche los, dass die Wände wackeln.

Da hätten wir später geguckt, wer da im Bett der Kinder gelegen hätte, wäre Robert nicht mit hoch gegangen!

Die Nacht für mich wird trotzdem furchtbar, denn der junge und ziemlich unfreundliche Hospitalero schläft im Zimmer hinter unserem, das heißt, um 23 Uhr geht er durch unseres in seines mit schrecklicher Quietschetür. Außerdem raucht er in seinem Zimmer Kette und es stinkt bis 1:30 Uhr, bis ich lautstark an seine Tür hin huste. So eine schlechte Nacht noch kurz vor Ende hätte jetzt auch nicht mehr sein müssen…

Portomarín to Portos, 18k, uppy, downy

Met up with Camino friends for pre-dinner drinks and a pilgrim meal in Portomarín. Rain had been forecast all day but fortunately happened during the meal when we had an inside table and unlimited wine as usual. Dessert was an ice cream dessert, a bit like Viennetta with whisky poured over it!

Steady walk, lots of up and downs, walked with Jim, from yesterday and a few other meetings along the way. Turns out Jim has been a magician for 40 years, interesting 🤔

A few minutes of rain but now at my Albergue, Paso de Formiga, Ant’s Way. It is a bit like this now as many walkers joined at Sarria so we look like a long line of ants all following the path!
