Living in Kai's parents' house before their death

You weren't much younger than Winter, maybe only a year or two. But it was enough to not be considered totally a baby.

While she was at Vassar College, you were still in high school and 2014 was your last year before graduation. So, you were living in the family home, under the same roof as your parents and the only brother who still lived there, Kai.

There is no need to remind you how toxic the atmosphere in that home was. Since your father's accident, he had become a different man because of frustration and probably fear of losing what he had.

So, the remaining members of his life became the scapegoats for his unhappiness. And you were no exception. Nothing you could do was good enough for him, no words of gratitude or pride ever came out of his mouth.

Your mother, on the other hand, seemed exhausted by the situation. By the verbal and sometimes physical abuse, she had to deal with daily.

You were never completely alone with him, probably because those around you knew exactly what was going to happen. That didn't stop you, however, from taking thoughts about anything that was an excuse to hurt for no reason. Whether it was the way you dressed, the plans you had for school, or simply the way you were doing things at the time.

For example, one evening when you were preparing the table with the sole purpose of doing your mother a favor, your father was already settled. With nothing else to do, he was looking at you, trying to find something to say to make you lose the smile on your face. You had just thought that it would be interesting to do a little something altogether for thanksgiving, and by all together you meant that your big brother, Vincent, should obviously be part of it.

But no sooner had a word come out of your mouth than a scathing remark cast a pall over the room. Make your usually cheerful face close.

So, it was in silence that you sat at the table, swallowing your dinner as quickly as possible to return to your room. And then your brother became the target of attacks after your mother had taken a long time to get into it.

No one was ever safe, which is why your siblings had left home, and you were sure that Kai was waiting for you to take your independence before he did.

Sitting in your bed, your room was adjacent to your parents' room, and you could hear everything that was going on there, for better or for worse.

So, most of the time you went down to the basement. No sooner was your face lit by the bare light bulb hanging from the ceiling than Kai would tap the spot next to him on the couch without even taking the time to make sure it was you. And you would spend the night there, no matter if the next day you had to go to class, you felt safer there.

It was not uncommon for you to fall asleep against his shoulder or with your legs resting on his lap. You weren't the type to say "I love you" all the time, but it was your way of showing that you were there for each other, and especially him for you.

When your mother shot your father, and turned the gun on herself, you were there. You heard everything. But you were scared to death. And it was only when Vincent arrived that you started to consider the reality.

But you didn't know that the events that would follow would be even more disturbing and overwhelming than those you had already experienced.

You had been invited over to the Anderson’s for dinner. Taco night. You were a bit nervous as you’d only been to Kai’s a few times before, and his parents were almost never there when you two were. 

You had also heard about his fathers outbursts. Kai told you not to worry too much about it. That his father would hopefully behave himself with a guest over. 

You had gotten dressed that day, going through at least five outfits before finding one you figured would be acceptable. Fancy, but not overly so. You weren’t try to be a showoff, just simply wanted to make a good impression.

You knocked when you got there, Kai’s mother answering the door with a bright smile. She looked happy to see you, and from what Kai had told you about her, she seemed like a nice woman. 

“It’s so great to meet you! Kai’s told us so much about you!” She smiled, pulling you into a too tight hug. You shook off your uncomfort and plastered a smile onto your red lips. She led you into the house and to the kitchen, pulling a chair out from the table for you. You sat with a grateful nod.

You asked if there was anything you could do to help, but she simply shook her head and brushed you off. You’re the guest, she insisted with a smile as she scurried around the kitchen, plating the tacos.

“Boys! Dinner!!” She called, bringing the plates to the table. She set yours down in front of you with a big smile. It smelled great. Tacos were definitely one of your favorites, and that’s exactly why she had made them. 

Soon you heard the thudding of footsteps and Kai emerged from the basement, his hair a mess, eyes tired and downcast. He looked like he’d been asleep. His eyes lit up when he saw you, taking a seat next to you before thanking his mom for dinner. You opened your mouth to speak when you heard the sound of his dads electric wheelchair rolling down the hall towards the kitchen. You saw Kai visibly tense, that bright cheerful look he had quickly fading back to his usual gloomy downcast look. 

You smiled politely when his dad wheeled up to the table, looking at his wife expectedly. You put your hands in your lap under the table. Everything was so silent. Like everyone was walking on eggshells.

The second Mrs. Anderson sat the plate down in front of her husband, you knew exactly why.

In a split second he had thrown the plate onto the ground, eyes wide and full of fury.

“Tacos?! Dammit! You know they’re too spicy for me!”

Kai flinched at the increase in volume, glancing between his mom and dad anxiously. His mom bent down to pick up the mess that had been thrown onto the floor, obviously trying to keep the peace.

“I know hun, that’s why I used mild salsa.” There was no malice in her voice. No sarcasm, but Mr. Anderson still seemed to get infinitely more mad at her choice of words.

“Who are you fucking?!” He screamed, grabbing her by her hair and pulling her to look at him. Kai tensed even further, and you sat on the edge of your seat. Literally, ready to get up at a moment's notice. 

“Honey- not in front of Kai-“

“He shouldn’t know who his moms fucking now that his dad can’t please her no more?!” He shouted, gripping her harder as his gaze turned to Kai.

“You’ll learn one day, son, women are good for nothing sluts. Leave ya the second you can’t make em’ happy anymore. You’ll learn soon enough-“ he let his gaze fall to you now. “She’ll leave ya. You fucked her yet? Pfft, probably ain’t good enough, just you wait. She’ll break your heart.” 

Kai refuses to look up from his plate, laser focused on his taco shell like if he kept staring at it, it’d transport him far away from here.

Thinking on your feet, you stood up, clearing your throat as you wiped off the front of your shirt to make sure it wasn’t wrinkled.

“It’s my fault, sir. Kai knows how much I love tacos and he asked Mrs. Anderson to make them.. I had no idea you couldn’t eat them.” You felt tears forming in your eyes that you tried desperately to push back down. 

“I can go out right now to go get something else. How do hamburgers sound?” 

He slowly released his grip on his wife’s hair, who in turn scrambled to her feet, dusting herself off and wiping at her eyes before turning to you. She looked grateful as you two shared a glance.

“I suppose that works. See, a woman who knows her place.” Mr. Anderson scoffed, looking from you to his wife. “You ought to learn a lesson or two from her.”

You quickly grabbed your purse and smiled, taking Kai’s hand “do you mind if he comes with me? I’ve got to pick up a few things and I could use his strength.”

Truth be, you didn’t have anything to pick up that you needed Kai for, but you could see he needed out of this situation.

Both his parents agreed and you and Kai all but ran out of the house to your car. When Kai got in the passenger's seat he took a heavy deep breath, laying his head back against the seat. You quickly started the car and pulled out do his driveway, glancing over at him with a frown. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“No… there’s nothing to talk about is there? My dads a piece of shit and my moms still with him…” He brought a hand over his face, rubbing at his eyes as he glanced out the window. He hadn’t made eye contact with you the entire time, you realized.

With your eyes on the road, you brought one of your hands down to his thigh, rubbing comforting circles into it as you smiled. You had made it a goal to get him to open up. You didn’t need it right now, but eventually you hoped he would trust you enough to really really talk to you about his life. 

“I love you Kai, and I’m always going to be here, okay? You don’t have to do this alone. Ever. I’m right here by your side.”

He didn’t say anything, but he didn’t have to. You knew exactly how he felt about you, and you knew exactly how you felt about him, too.

Evans Height HCs

ok so i usually don’t do this but i’ve seen posts about this before and they only really rank the evans in height from tallest to shortest so today i’m giving actual heights that i headcanon let’s get started

Tate: ok he is cocky but not like an over 6 foot type cocky, but also not like a 5’5 kind of cocky, so i’m giving him a fair 5’10, only an inch shorter than evan actually is so it seems alright, because like he’s confident, but not in a super tall guy kind of way

Kit: i’m feeling like a solid 6’0 maybe even 6’1 if i’m being generous and i think he somewhat enjoys his height like he doesn’t try to make it his whole personality or anything but he’s comfortable in the fact that in some cases he can tower over people and in some cases he’s only just a little bit taller than others, but in general he’s a really confident guy so i feel like it’s just not something he’s ever concerned himself too much with

Frat Kyle: something about being a frat boy just screams 5’9 to me but in a negative way. like i mean this as an insult to frat boys, even though i love kyle with my whole heart, he is definitely not over 6’0 and i think he’d lie about his height just a little bit like he’d say 5’10 maybe 5’11 just to impress people a little bit. just don’t break out the tape measurer or else words will be had

Franken Kyle: now hear me out on this. he was given a new body. like completely new shit. madison and zoe did not know who the fuck they were putting together, they just saw a handsome face and ran with it. 6’1. i think something in the reconstruction gave him a few extra inches and it would really help sell the whole murderous monster thing to be taller than 5’9. i don’t know i just think it could happen

Jimmy: i think he’s 5’11. because i feel like we were sold the whole ‘other than his hands he is the most attractive man’ and i think that includes him not being super short or super tall. he’s a little on the taller side but just like. not all the way up there with it

James: bless his soul but this man is just a little guy. not like SUPER small. but he is probably 5’8 or 5’7. and let’s be real does it even matter id still smash no questions asked. but he just isn’t very large. hope you all feel these vibes. once again he has that confidence and he puts together his look very nicely and that’s what pulls all his bitches so it does not matter what his height is but let’s be real. 5’8 at the most

Rory: never seen this season. someone on tiktok assigned this season to my zodiac sign (aries) and that pissed me off so i’m giving him 5’6. deal with it. fuck gingers

Kai: i know a lot of people say this and that’s because it’s correct but kai is the tallest. like he is giving TALL energy. like 6’4 at least maybe even 6’5. and hear me out on this so precult he was just this weird nerd incel thing and he had the potential to be hot he just wasn’t doing that yet. have you guys met nerds in real life. some of them get pretty big i can speak from personal experience also it totally works out with his intimidation tough guy thing, just being an absolute mountain of a man, i’d be scared but id still smash

Kai Obviously a food whore, that’s canon. But he cannot cook. He thinks cooking is a woman’s job. He is literally incapable of scrambling an egg. He does not know how to turn the stove on. If he tried, he would get frustrated at every part of it. Kai in the kitchen is a bunch of swear words and hands waving around from him touching the food with his hands and then getting burnt. His favourite food is pizza and sloppy joes. Finger food because he doesn’t know how to use a knife and fork. Using a knife and fork is for Gays™.

Tate Tate likes to be in the kitchen and likes the aura of cooking, but he does not like to cook himself. He enjoys sitting at the kitchen island like the little princess he is and watching. You can give him something to chop but he will take an hour to chop a carrot. The only repetitive task that Tate is okay at is peeling potatoes. That’s because Constance told him when he was younger, “Wow! I’ve never seen someone peel potatoes as fast as you!”. She kisses him on the forehead and ever since then he prides himself in how well he peels potatoes, not knowing that Constance is smirking in her grave. His favourite food is alfredo pasta.

James Obviously, being a classy man, he likes eating classy food. Porkchops, gravy, meals that he can tell took a while to prepare. He definitely pretends he likes caviar and crackers. He is very useless at cooking but it is okay because he is a ghost who doesn’t need to eat. His favourite food is pork or lamb and wine. Especially the wine.

Pre-Cult Kai He’s useless, but it’s not weaponised incompetence like it is with Cult Kai. Baby just is impatient. He can’t do things by himself. He burns everything he cooks alone because he only uses high heat. He burns toast honestly. But he tries. He’s a very good helper because he’s obedient as hell. His favourite food is spaghetti. Especially his mom’s spaghetti.

Jimmy Cannot cook. Jimmy is definitely the Evan that likes to eat something weird as hell like pickles and peanut butter. His mom still makes him sandwiches for breakfast, and wraps them up in clingfilm for him for the next few days. Momma’s boy. He ‘can make food’ if you class peanut butter sandwiches and instant oatmeal as food. He would try to cook you a meal, but it wouldn’t go right. It would be burnt and raw at the same time. He would probably still eat it though. Nasty. His favourite food is your ass.

Kit He will eat anything. Kit is by far the most grateful eater. He appreciates that you stay at home and cook for him, and he respects that staying at home is a full time job. If you don’t stay at home and still cooks for him, then he appreciates that too. He will take you out every so often with little bits of saved up money so you can take a break. He’s not completely useless, but he can’t make a whole meal by himself. He can make scrambled eggs and French toast, purely for the purpose of making you and the kids breakfast in bed. He'll help bringing groceries in, cleaning up, and throwing away trash after a big meal. He’ll help as much as he can without touching the stove. He prefers to help you and the kids bake. He finds the process more calming and sweet. Plus he likes pastries. His favourite food is mash potatoes, chicken and gravy. He also loves any type of ethnic food and French pastries. I feel like when you’re making a big meal (let’s say thanksgiving), he walks past and asks how you’re doing just so he can eat a spoonful of mash potatoes every time.

Peter Sugar. Sugar sugar sugar. He absolutely lives off sandwiches and wraps. Chicken nuggets, oven baked pizza, takeaways. He can totally take care of himself, but he just doesn’t really cook. I think he can, he just doesn’t. As a kid he always helped his mom and Wanda make Sokovian food so he knows how to make it. But cooking takes too long for his liking. His favourite food is twinkies.

Colin Colin makes food for you. He’s the only Evan that regularly, every day, cooks for himself. Occasionally he orders some food or pops somewhere to get food on the way back from work to eat it. After a really long day he likes to get a burger or fried chicken or something and eat it in front of the television where he also falls asleep. But most of the time, he’s pretty good at making food. He has maybe 5 things that he likes to make for himself and he makes them in rotation until he’s perfected them and he gets sick of them. His favourite food is also spaghetti. He can make it by himself, but it doesn’t go the way he wants. He sometimes asks his mom for help. Or you, of course. He also loves strawberries and cream in anything. Cheesecake, cake, ice cream, all of it. He’ll happily lick whipped cream off your nipples.

Kyle He knows expertly how to make a handful of dishes and he loves making them for the people he loves. He likes cooking when he knows exactly what he’s doing, and likes when you help him, so he can spend time with you. He’ll probably make you chop things or do something repetitive. He definitely talks like the two of you are on a cooking show. “So this is called roux”. He makes really good fried chicken. He definitely finishes your food if at a restaurant you don’t finish it. But since he’s in a frat, and they have food made for them, he doesn’t really need to cook. Kyle is just a foodie, therefore if there is food, he will eat it. If there is not, he will make it. If food has a million fans, he is one of them. If food has ten fans, he is one of them. If food has only one fan then that’s him. If food has no fans that means he is no longer on Earth. If the world is against food, he is against the world. His favourite food is Creole jambalaya or chicken sandwiches.

It was winter break and you decided to go with your boyfriend to his home. You've only been with him for three months but you were both madly in love with each other. Within the first month, you both said the ‘L’ word.

It was going to be the first time you met his family. You were excited and nervous.

It was snowing out and you and Kai walked up to the front door.

“Do you think they'll like me?” you asked.

“Are you kidding? They'll love you. Probably not as much as I love you,” he said, planting a kiss on your lips and then the front door opened and his sister looked at Kai in disgust, just like any younger sibling would do.

“Seriously Kai? Forcing your poor girlfriend to kiss your ugly face?” she said.

“Shut up Winter,” he said half-seriously.

She looked at you with a smile and then brought you into a hug, “Hi im Winter your future sister-in-law.”

“Seriously Winter you're gonna scare her,” he said.

She released you from the hug and looked at him, “Nonsense if im scaring her then she's probably not the one for you,” she turned and looked at you, “Am I scaring you Y/N?”

You smile at her, “No of course not. Why don't you show me around sis?” you say putting your arm around her and she smiled at her brother.

She took you in the house and showed you around, making you look at all the embarrassing photos of Kai when he was little.

He brought the luggage up to his room and was happy to see you and his sister bonding. Family was very important to him.

“Hey, where's mom and dad?”

“Oh, they didn't let you know? Aunt Christy had a bad fall so they're gonna help her out for a couple of days but they should be back for Christmas,” Winter said.

Once you all made your way downstairs Kai lit the fire and Winter made all of you hot cocoa. It was honestly like a dream. You and your family weren't close. You had not been home for the holidays in around 3 years.

You were watching a cheesy holiday movie and Winter and Kai were whispering something to each other.

“Are you guys talking about me?” you ask not to take your eyes off the screen.

Winter got up from the couch, “All good things Y/N.” She grabs you by your hands and leads you down to the basement. You look back at Kai and he smiles at you.

“Is there where you're going to kill me?” you chuckle.

“Of course not, this is too big a space, I like to do it in a small confined space,” she looks back at you and smiles, “kidding.”

She sits you down at this little table and sits across from you.

“So Y/N, me and my brother do this thing that lets us both be 100% honest with each other.” Winter puts her arm on the table with her pinky out. You did the same and linked your pinkies together.

“Now we both will be completely honest and I'll know if you're lying because we are linked together.”

You nod and she begins, “Why are you with my brother?”

“Wow, that question out of the gate. Well it may be super cliche but he makes me happy, when we first interacted we had this chemistry and he's everything I ever thought of when it comes to a boyfriend and a best friend.”

“Good answer. Now tell me about your family.”

“Both my parents weren't around much. I was mainly raised by my aunt. Once I turned 16 I was back into my parents' care. I acted out because I didn't know these people but then my aunt put me in my place. She got diagnosed with breast cancer in my senior year and died a day before I graduated.”

“And why didn't you want to go home for winter break?”

“My parents are both junkies and it would bring down the holiday spirit if I was there.”

“Does my brother know about all this?”

“Yes, I've always been 100% honest with him.”

“But?” she egged on.

“But what?”

“Y/N you're holding back something. I know it. You need to be honest with me.”

You took a deep breath. And took a small present box out of your pocket and slid it across the table.

From upstairs Kai was waiting patiently. He knew you were the one and knew you would pass the pinky test. From the basement, he heard shrieks and giggles. He wondered what that was about.

The two of you walked up the stairs, Winter had a big smile as did you.

He got up from the couch and walked over to you. “What was with the shrieking?”

“Um,” you were nervous to tell him so you took him upstairs to his room and the both of you sat on his bed.

“Okay so,” you got the small present box and gave it to him.

He smiled at you and opened it up. In the box was a pregnancy test. A positive pregnancy test.

You held your breath and waited for him to say something.

“Listen, Kai, I know that this is a bit of a shock and we've only been together a couple of months and if you want to take a break or something we totally can.”

“Are you kidding me? Are you fucking kidding me?” he said with a raised voice. You honestly couldn't tell what emotion it was.

“Um no? I can pee on a new stick if you want.”

He quickly grabbed your face and kissed you. “I love you so much,” he said against your lips.

You were so relieved that he was happy with this. Then the bedroom door opened and Winter came in with celebratory hot cocoa.
