His Other Half
Warning(s): Gender-neutral reader, OOC?, not proof-read
Fandom: The Tale of Food
Summary: Recently, Yulin Xiangyao has found it hard to focus on anything but you.
Notes: I know he hasn’t released yet but because of a certain someone. I’m now eagerly waiting for the day he comes out despite knowing I’ll probably only have one jade left at the rate I’m pulling. He’s also a Disney Princess so that trumps the remnants of my sanity.
Tumblr media
Yulin Xiangyao has found it hard to focus on anything but you in recent days.
From the way your face lights up whenever he complimented your flute playing to your busy figure rushing across the restaurant handling orders from waiting customers. Not even the animals that gather around him when he plays his flute or Han Ying’s nudging for another pat could distract his eyes from trailing after you. He wonders when it all started, when his mind started filling with thoughts of you.
Ah…this feeling that started welling up in his chest…this was love, wasn’t it?
Is this what his chief, Peng Yulin, felt towards Mei Gu? This feeling of love, of desire, of yearning…so gentle yet so passionate. It was unlike anything he’s felt before. A burning flame that could withstand any blizzard, the single candlelight lighting up the darkness, how lovely this love was! He wants to embrace it, to hold it tightly and never let it go but…he wonders if you feel the same.
Do you feel the same way as him? You who are like the gentle spring breeze blowing through the mountains of Kongsang and he who is like a blizzard waiting for a single warmth. Waiting and waiting for his fated one which he hopes- no, knows - to be you. The you who surprises him everyday with a different “you”, the you who happily accepted him into Kongsang, and the you who stands bravely against any foes threatening your home. He fell in love with every you that he has the privilege of seeing.
Now looking at the figure playing in the snow not so far from him, Yulin smiled softly as you ran towards him, a bundle of snow in your hands and snowflakes in your hair. Stopping in front of him as he brushed away the snowflakes, letting them flutter down like the first snow, you presented him a unicorn made of snow. He’s too embarrassed to say this but in actuality, he was distracted by the rainbows in your eyes and the way you seemed to blush when his hands touched yours to receive the gift. Was this love of his not fruitless after all?
He truly wished it were so as he snuggled with you under the porch. Looking down at your sleeping visage, his eyes softened and he could feel the place where his heart would be skip a step. If…if he were to give you the other half of his jade pendant..would you accept? Willing to be forever his? Even if the answer was no, Yulin knew that until his final breath, he’ll always love you.
His first and only love, his other half.

Stupid thought that's probably missing stuff I'm forgetting
So
If we're working with the theory Peng killed Macaque (which, I am) does Peng know Macaque's alive?
Like, I know Peng said he looked for Macaque, but that doesn't mean he really did. And if he was trying to hide the fact he killed Macaque, either to avoid Wukong's ire or something else, he could've easily just lied.
(I mean, unless Wukong's got something on Flower Fruit Mountain, Peng would've been able to check it immediately and find Macaque there, right? Or did Wukong literally just...never revoke Macaque's FFM privileges?)
So, all I'm imagining now in my hopeful idealistic version of Season 5/Season 4 Finale, is Macaque somehow frees Wukong, then for one reason or another Macaque gets caught up in a fight between the gang and the remaining Brotherhood.
One way or another Peng spots Macaque, and realization sets in, and he has to sit here and go "How the frick are you alive!?", and maybe that's also when Macaque gets the wake-up call that no, Wukong would not kill him.
Alternatively, if Peng does know Macaque is alive (again, running off the theory)...how? If he saw him while searching I assume he'd either have tried to drag him into the fight or just said "And stay dead!" and go for him again while he's alone so he doesn't side with Wukong. Considering the fact Teng put LBD away I assume LBD's whole...thing happened after the Brotherhood was disbanded, so Macaque's revival would've probably happened a good while after Peng was in the scroll. So..?
Of course it's 4:30 in the morning and I'm thinking of a half-baked overthought thing on the fly, leave me alone. I'll come back to this later (AKA when a note reminds me it exists, whoops) and see if there's literally any potential weight to it.

Absolute Skating interview with Marie-France Dubreuil - the whole thing is worth a read- about working with Kaori and Nathan and how she picks one non-ice dance skater or team per season to choreograph for, about working with Peng/Jin and Wang/Liu by zoom during covid, about embracing the Ukrainian team into the school
Let's talk a bit about your Academy. It's really inspiring to see your work and the growth of your school. And I loved how your students don't want to leave the sport when they retire, and you open opportunities for them, to work as coaches. There is a branch in London, Ontario now, with Scott Moir, Adrián Díaz and Madison Hubbell. Are there plans to open more?
I don't know. This also happened because we all couldn't travel so Scott started teaching in London and we said: "Okay, let's expand in Canada." We were stuck at home for a while and when you have a chance to work with champions like Scott or Madison... It was a privilege to teach them and now we have a common vision, so it just made sense for us to help them grow into the coaches we knew they could become and give them a "fast track". Because it takes time to build a school, but we've done it, we've spent ten years on the basic organisation of a school. And then we could just transfer it to another place and put the right people there and then it's going to grow much faster than what we built. If we can shave off some "building" time, then it's easy. And also, we were getting a lot of requests and couldn't fulfill them. So, it's nice to have another school to say: "No, we're full, but you have a great option." And the London school spent three weeks in Montreal in July, we really trained as a big camp. Storing energy like this is great for everyone.
I noticed that during this event, during practices and competition, you really give Scott his own space.
He is the head coach. But I'm always standing between Romain and Scott. If he needs something he just grabs me by the arm and we work together but he's the head coach of the London school.

sarah's non-comprehensive Shortbox Comics Fair rec list
Tumblr media
hi hello have you heard about the Shortbox Comics Fair? It's an annual digital comics fair that runs through the month of October and showcases over 100+ amazing shortform digital comics from a whole host of supremely talented comic artists which means it's about to end in like A DAY. Pls go check it out if you haven't, this tableau is seriously kickass and it's fun and good to support rad indie artists!!!!
anyway to show my appreciation for these amazing stories i wanted to pull together a quick rec list of some of my favorites of the ones i've picked up, although i just want to say i honestly and wholeheartedly loved every single story i picked up and also dearly wish i had the budget to pick up more! i truly believe this fair has something for everyone but hopefully this list can serve as something of a starting point [mind the content warnings]:
Adversary by Blue Delliquanti - Minneapolis, 2021. Curtis is newly out, single, and ready to take his life in a different direction. Anton is a mysterious young man who recognizes Curtis from their pre-pandemic lives and reacquaints himself in a way Curtis isn’t entirely prepared for.
Hoo baby this is an intense one but so incredibly worth it. The visual storytelling through the coloring and the shading is chef's kiss, the characters so fully realized in such a short space, the story so darkly compelling and yet with an current of hope under the simmering rage and hurt that's practically leaping off the page with every incisive line of dialogue. definitely one of those stories you need to sit with for a bit after you finish it. [i also highly recommend the completed webcomic O Human Star and the YA graphic novel Across a Field of Starlight by this author, they're one of my faves!!]
Between Sand and Sea by C.A.P Ward - A call to the sea, a call to the shore, a call home. When their family leaves the coast, a youth struggles with life away from the only home they know. Their longing calls the sea inland until a choice must be made, tide the changes this brings, or chart an uncertain path to find what it means to come home.
god what a gorgeous coming of age story from start to finish - beautiful art, beautiful writing, beautiful characters, a beautiful resolution, just everything about this!! i love the mythic quality of the storytelling and i love the quiet yearning for home and belonging and meaning that suffuses the whole narrative. and you know a bitch is weak for sea metaphors of birth and belonging!
Chamber by Chamber by Ryugere - An executioner grapples with the guilt of killing an old friend as they take care of an abandoned child.
Yes all the characters in this comic are snails. No none of them have faces or facial expressions. Yes it completely fucked me up regardless. Highly recommend for the subtle but gutwrenching world-building, the expressiveness of the characters [turns out you don't need faces to accomplish this to devastating effect jesus], and the complexity of morality the main character grapples with throughout the story.
Cynosure by Jessica Peng - If two women were trapped on a spaceship and one was a malfunctioning AI and the other is trying to kill the former with a hatchet would that be fucked up or what?
oh you know this is exactly my type of shit. it's the doomed narrative and the homoeroticism of antagonism and the two lonely people reaching for each other despite everything of it it all! i LOVE the way the story of this relationship unfolds through the story through the alternating povs, each chapter somehow throwing everything that came before it into a new and startling light.
Hourglass by Barbara Mazzi - The Hourglass is called many things: the perfect machine, the source of all life, the fountain of youth. It promises immortal comfort to the privileged, but it also looms over its creators, making them slaves to its tics and gears. Martel knows that there are other simple, inexplicable things that give life meaning, way more valuable than eternity. A system built on rejecting such principles is beyond fragile - it is a ticking time bomb.
The richness of the world-building in this story, my goodness. it really ticks all my boxes: impeccable steampunk vibes, searing social commentary and portrayal of structural inequality through fantasy allegory, endlessly charming characters from two vastly disparate worlds forming a fragile but profound connection. And that ending! What a read!
I Am Of Two Hearts by Val Wise - Emissary Thresa will be executed on return to his King. Before his death, he visits the temple of his birth
I don't want to spoil anything but this one. it really hit me somewhere tender and aching. Thresa is a thoroughly captivating protagonist and following his emotional journey through this comic honestly left me breathless. i'm going to be thinking about this one for a long while.

Stunned, confused, and bewildered, Peng Wei finds the portrayal of the female—whether the exemplars in Paragons of Feminine Virtue by Ming-dynasty thinker Lv Kun, or the fox spirits and female ghosts in Strange Tales from the Chinese Studio by Qing-dynasty novelist Pu Songling—to be indistinguishable products of the male gaze that could be anonymously reproduced to reinforce patriarchal values.
Tumblr media
Peng Wei isolates these images from their original contexts, and transforms them into new narratives where the posture and the body of these women educes a strange feeling that becomes tacitly amplified. The body of these women reemerges as a new tale, or a spectacle in and of itself. The dissimilitude, misappropriation, and vacancy among these images of women create interstices which the artist adroitly leverages into a singular, feminine space by recontexualizing the parables or spectacularizing gender.
Peng Wei’s contemplation on what it means to be female, privileges the female vantage point. Through the ancient works of Chinese literature, her feminine gaze ultimately returns the prerogative of narrative to women, reimagining feminine aesthetics in contemporary society.

Editor’s note: We decided to keep our special correspondent anonymous because of concerns about their safety.
Protesting on the streets had always seemed risky for Zhu, even as a Chinese student in the United States, so she had never attended one before. (She asked to use a pseudonym for this piece.) But last Friday night, she attended her first-ever demonstration, near the gate of Boston’s Chinatown, where a small marble memorializing the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre stands.
About 200 mostly Chinese people gathered to commemorate the lives lost in an apartment fire on Nov. 24 in Urumqi, the northwestern Chinese city where Zhu’s grandparents had been under a strict lockdown for more than three months. The Urumqi fire inspired anti-lockdown protests across China, which helped spark a wave of policy changes that have severely weakened the zero-COVID regime. One of the earliest and most prominent demonstrations occurred on Shanghai’s Urumqi Road, right across the street from the elementary school Zhu had attended.
“It feels wrong not to show up,” Zhu, a public health student from Shanghai, told Foreign Policy later. “I have the privilege to live a comfortable life here in the U.S., while people back home are dying from zero-COVID policies.”
Zhu is among the tens of thousands of young Chinese people in the global diaspora who have turned up at protests in solidarity after China’s extraordinary wave of protests in recent weeks. As Beijing moved quickly to clamp down on protesters on the mainland, overseas organizers staged hundreds of gatherings worldwide, according to a tally kept by activists at Citizens Daily, a network run by a handful of anonymous volunteers that focuses on pro-democracy causes in China.
Zhu’s concern for her safety is not unwarranted. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is known for spying on overseas students and sees the diaspora as a potential source of political unrest. Attending an anti-Beijing protest abroad could easily bring the police to the doorsteps of their relatives back home. All interviewees spoke to Foreign Policy on the condition of anonymity to protect their safety.
Seven weeks before this round of demonstrations, a protest at Beijing’s Sitong Bridge had already spurred a smaller group of overseas students into action. Peng Lifa, the lone protester now known as “Bridge Man,” hung banners in central Beijing directly criticizing Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s zero-COVID policies and called for him to step down.
Although he was quickly arrested and few in China heard about the incident, overseas students put up flyers inspired by the banners on college campuses. Those flyers allowed them to raise attention to the issue without risking their safety. The wave of reactions already surprised and encouraged activists, sowing the seeds for a new round of action.
The looming threat from Beijing also forces most organizers to stay anonymous, using more secure social media platforms, such as Telegram, to coordinate their efforts within a small group. Then they post information about their protest to accounts like Citizens Daily, which has been aggregating protest information since overseas students started echoing the demands of Bridge Man two months ago by putting up flyers on university campuses.
On Nov. 28, Citizens Daily published a list of four demands of the “A4 Revolution,” named after the blank sheets of white paper held by protesters in China to symbolize the country’s heavy censorship. The four demands—ending zero-COVID policies, releasing arrested protesters, allowing public vigils for victims, and guaranteeing constitutional rights—were adopted by many groups.
In some of the protests in China, such as the gathering on Shanghai’s Urumqi Road, there were calls for Xi to step down. But while many in the overseas movement share such views, organizers have largely steered clear of such language in their official statements, wanting to push a broader platform and avoid internal disagreements.
Pica, a student who attended a protest in Seoul, told Foreign Policy that some demonstrators at the scene disagreed with the majority there who called for Xi to step down.
A small number wanted to prohibit non-Chinese people from attending the demonstration, attempting to avoid being accused of foreign intervention—a trope frequently employed by Beijing’s propaganda organs to smear dissenters.
“I am totally against this,” Pica told Foreign Policy. “Protests against authoritarianism and injustice shouldn’t exclude anyone. It should be transnational.”
For some activists, Uyghur issues were the missing piece of the protests. There has been a brutal crackdown on Uyghur freedoms and culture in Xinjiang over the last five years, and the fire on Nov. 24 took place in a majority-Uyghur neighborhood.
“We made it very clear that ‘end Uyghur genocide’ is part of our platform,” said Ava, a Han Chinese student activist based in Toronto whose group has staged several events since the Bridge Man demonstration, including one in front of the Chinese Consulate in Toronto that drew hundreds of people.
Ava, who sees Uyghurs and Tibetans as persecuted nationalities, said the organizers are mindful that conflicts can occur between those who hold mainstream Chinese nationalist views and minority groups. But instead of shying away from the problem, her group is deliberately inviting representatives from the Uyghur and Tibetan communities to speak about their experiences at their events.
But others found the new sense of solidarity moving. In the past, Chinese students on U.S. campuses have used intimidation tactics against their classmates from marginalized groups who tried to speak out.
According to an anonymous submission to Northern Square, another aggregation account on Instagram that has become a community for ordinary Chinese people who hold anti-Communist Party views, a Uyghur representative who spoke at a demonstration outside the Chinese Consulate in New York City on Nov. 29 said he had never seen so many Chinese nationals standing in solidarity with Uyghurs. Organizers of the event invited Uyghurs to provide personal accounts of CCP suppression in Xinjiang, which drew unified chants in support of the Uyghurs.
Zhu, the student who attended a protest in Boston that also featured Uyghur speakers, said listening to such personal accounts has inspired her to pay more attention to Uyghur causes. Despite having Han Chinese grandparents who live in Xinjiang, Zhu said she had not previously known much about the concentration camps.
Aside from Uyghurs, activists at many of these events took the opportunity to build solidarity with other oppressed groups, in and outside China.
“Women’s rights and LGBTQ rights were very much highlighted,” said Ava of the events her group had organized, noting that more than half of the 18 organizers in her group are female or queer. “We always have women’s rights and queer rights speakers.”
She said it was the “chained woman” incident—when video of a woman chained by the neck outside her home in a rural Chinese village spurred public outcry this year—that prompted her to speak out more, even though her “political enlightenment” happened when she was 14. In addition, Ava said, the events also featured Iranian feminist groups, who spoke about their struggle for equality.
Yet Wu, a student in London, said attending protests as a woman can be frustrating. She estimated that over 70 percent of the more than 1,000 attendees at a demonstration she attended were women, yet she could still hear male speakers make offensive and sexist comments.
Despite that, hearing the chants for Xi to step down outside the Chinese Embassy was still an empowering experience for Wu.
“It wasn’t my first time speaking out, but hearing the large crowd shouting … I just couldn’t help crying,” Wu told Foreign Policy. “It was so thrilling.”
Experiences like this motivated Wu to continue her activism. Recently, she and her friends started an Instagram account to highlight gender inequalities in China. The account is called “We Are All Chained Women,” referring to the same event that spurred Ava, and many other Chinese women, into political activism.
As zero-COVID policies end in China, Wu and her friends are worried that many people will lose their interest in protesting. But she will be among another group of young Chinese people spread across the world, gathering again this Saturday on U.N. Human Rights Day.
As authorities in China take measures against student protesters, overseas organizers hope their activism could bring more safety to their allies back home.
“If we keep advocating for the release of those who are arrested and garner international pressure onto the Chinese government,” Ava said, “these people have a higher likelihood of being released early and being safer.”
While protesters abroad still face significant risks that forbid them to speak more openly, the recent protests have offered a sense of hope for many.
“If we build a stronger diaspora community,” Ava said, “we can try to support the domestic resistance better.”

📸 FOR AN INSTAGRAM POST ABOUT YOUR MUSE @slowjovrney
how can i begin this text? it is funny how i’m a writer, yet it’s so hard for me to put into words what i feel for you. it’s hard to explain to anyone. but showing the rest of the world step by step how amazing, terrific, fascinating, sweet, generous, stunning, brilliant, lovely and loved you are, and why you are so, is easy. that’s why i’ve made my every work an ode to you (would they even exist without you? would i?) facing you with the same facts, on the other hand...
but you deserve to hear them.
daiyu. yuyu. priceless as jade, and as virtuous. my wife, my best friend, my first love, my forever love. this is our first year of marriage, our 8th year in a romantic relationship, our 20th something year in each other’s lives! i’ve lost count. i don’t remember not knowing you and frankly, i wouldn’t want to. you’ve always been the person i’ve held closest to heart. you’re the person i trust most and i know i can rely on. and i know you know you can rely on me.
we’ve grown together. my very first memories of you are wrapped in gentle light. this is who you’ve always been, tranquil and steady and true, even among so many hardships. your heart is as bright as your mind, and i’ve seen you become even brighter with time. your hard work inspires me every day. you’ve come so far relying on this hard work and you’ve made your dreams come true. i could brag about you for days and nights nonstop. i’m so proud of you and i’m so honoured to have been by your side throughout every step. and i’m so honoured for being able to be by your side throughout every step in your future, for i will be. and i’m so honoured and privileged to be part of your family, whom you love so much and care for so dearly.
but i love you for the simpler things as well. the way you talk, the way you laugh, the way you dress, the way you look at the sea, the way you hold every animal. the thoughts you share with me. your bed hair, the mole on your nose, the mole by your eye. the way you still sometimes go shy when i flirt with you, despite the fact we’ve been together for years. my biggest privilege is to be able to hold you through the night and wake up with you in the morning.
loving you is such a simple thing, yet there’s nothing more real. it’s all i’ve ever known how to do. and it’s such an obvious thing. whenever someone asks me why i love you, i want to reply: isn’t it obvious? daiyu is daiyu. this text has just been a small attempt at naming what makes you you. but i don’t think i could ever find the words for it all.
my wife. my biggest privilege is to have my love returned. and that i get to call you wife after all. we are truly lucky to have found each other so early on.  to have found the right person when we were still so young, when others have to search for so long. let them envy us. but i do wish the same luck reach them, for there is no greater bliss, no simpler yet deeper joy. to me, you are happiness.
my wife. peng daiyu. and qiu daiyu, too. i hope you’ll forgive me for lying to you and locking myself into my office saying i wished to work on a script when in truth i wanted to write this. happy one year anniversary. happy one year into this new phase of our new journey, where hand in hand we grow old together. in the heaven we shall be birds flying side by side, and on the earth we shall be twinned trunks flowering sprigs on the same branch.
i love you.
(in the language i speak with you, every word is synonym with i love you)

I may not like Clive, but I do feel sorry for him. When he tells Maurice that Alec left, he's partially doing it because he's terrified at the thought of the man he loves leaving him. Is he trying to hurt Maurice? Yes, but it's more complex than that, IMO. And I think that goes for all the other bullshit he does, too. Does that make it RIGHT? Not at ALL. Still, dude lived a miserable life because he's too scared to be himself in a homophobic society in the early-1900s. I sympathize with that.
I get that anon, but its not right either to just minimise everything clive did and blame it on society, there's a whole bunch of stuff he does that's not things he has to do bec of the society he's in. a great example is the night before greece scene. his bf has just come to see him off and spend some time with him before he leaves, and he acts like such an asshole for no reason other than a complete dislike for maurice, which the book tells us exists
I get it, one does feel some level of sympathy for clive in the last shot, but one can do that without saying all the stuff he did was excusable, bec it wasn't. when he disliked maurice, instead of being honest about his emotions, he goaded him in the night before greece scene as if trying to start an argument. and not even that, clive's been treating maurice like he was something to be moulded in his image from day one, and then after six months of not talking after the breakup, he calls him up like omg come to my wedding btw you're the eighth person I called. like ???
and at this point, maurice is over clive, who now wants the former over all the time so he can have his heterosexual façade and privilege and the guy he still has feelings for, but maurice doesn't even feel that way anymore and it hurts him to keep coming to penge but he has to bec he has no one else he's close to. I can't even think of a time clive genuinely cared about maurice's feelings, during and after their relationship
so yeah the guy did live a miserable life and its partly bec of the society he was in. but a major part of it was bec of his own choices and I swear to you, no one would hate clive if he wasn't a bitch to maurice and a bitch in general all bec he cares about his own self. you said it yourself that he says that stuff in the last scene to hurt maurice - he can't stand seeing him happy with someone else. I agree, stuff can have complicated reasons, not everything is black and white, but its important to understand that if he does 'love' maurice, if one can call it that, its bec clive wants him around after his marriage for his beauty or whatever, not bec he actually cares about him or what he wants

The Eras of Lana Del Rey: Lookbook no.9
Tumblr media
Hi to anyone reading,
Hope you’re okay! AND that you didn’t end up here because you searched the Lana Del Rey tag so you could see people ranting about her-you’re about to be very disappointed. Sorry. This is not about to be some Question for the Culture discourse because the world is bleak enough right now and the last thing we all need is to be reminded of that saga.
Being a Lana Del Rey fan is easy, they said. She’s not a controversial artist, they said. And yet 2020 had to do what it does best and fuck everything up.
Whether people like her or not, it’s made me so angry reading all the abuse she’s been getting about her appearance for the last couple of weeks, because I really thought that if we could agree on anything it was that attacking individuals for the way they look because you dislike something they’ve done (with the exception of shit like racist tattoos and blackfishing) is, you know, awful and judgemental as fuck? Like you do realise when you treat the word fat as a pejorative that the fat people you don’t have a problem with understood that you meant it as an insult too? I think what all those people tweeting about Lana’s weight, and that includes some of her fans, are forgetting is that she was in her early 20s when she was thrust into the limelight. As much as there’s this conspiracy that her dad bought her a career in the music industry, she’d made the decision to go it alone and had lived in a trailer park as a struggling musician for years. On top of that, we have the unreleased tracks with lyrics seemingly referencing an eating disorder in her younger years. OF COURSE her body is going to look different. Why is it that we treat weight gain as an inherently bad thing without any insight into the other factors that constitute a person’s “health”? It’s fucking insane that so many feel they have the right to comment on other’s bodies in the first place and it breaks my heart that she might be reading these comments. This wasn’t intended to necessarily be a rant about how much I love this woman but all the shit I’ve read about her on the internet these past few months have pushed me to it. You'll respect your queen of alternative music or I shall stan twice as hard on your behalf. You can thank me later when you come to your senses xoxo
I’d love to say it was intentional that I finally finished this post the week Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass was released but that would imply I have my shit way more together than I actually do. If I’m being completely honest, I’ve only heard L.A Who am I to Love You so far 1). because I want to wait for the hard copy for the rest and that doesn’t turn up til September and 2). because I do not have my shit together, lol. That being said, there is no doubt in my mind that I am going to love it-one thing I have always loved about Lana’s lyrics is how well they paint a picture and this is something that poetry only more freely allows for the exploration of. That ability to create such a strong narrative voice and atmosphere is a talent that extends to her visuals and the production of her records too, and is something I really missed when it comes to the Norman Fucking Rockwell era. I’m just going to say it: a strong aesthetic is to NFR as memorable songs are to Lust for Life. Lacking. Am I allowed to say that as a fan? The collaborations don’t do it for me, okay, and as as NFR is concerned, aside from The Greatest/Fuck It I Love You video which went down the whole neon surfer girl route, it’s hard to identify a cohesive theme. It’s understandable that at this point, she would want to just focus purely on the music, and it goes without saying that NFR will stand the test of time in that regard but I don’t think we can deny that when people think of Lana in the future, it’s not gonna be a green windbreaker that comes into their heads.

And here’s where this Filip Kozak illustration comes into it; after years of it sitting in my camera roll for years, it finally has a use. There’s really nothing better to illustrate how mundane life has become this year than the disproportionate level of excitement my photo-hoarding-self experienced realising it would fit perfectly into this post and is thus eligible for deletion. Up there with being able to fit a whole box of biscuits onto the shelf at work rather than having to individually take out as many as I can and then shove them on top of the existing box of biscuits one by one. Truly riveting content on this Tumblr page. Back to the point-by using this as my stimulus for the post rather than the Lana Del Rey albums as outfits tag that went round on Twitter, I can conveniently exclude NFR as an outfit inspiration category, and that saves me from having to buy a charity shop windbreaker with its price bumped up 150% by some upper middle class Depop e-girl or boy who uses the word peng as a descriptor like it’s a nervous tic. To make up for leaving out NFR, I’ve tried to branch out a bit and do the outfits not just based on the music videos or album covers but also from street style and stage looks and photoshoots from around the same period too. It was hard not to be influenced by the general “vibe” and sound of the albums either when I was planning outfits, whether it’s the grand, orchestral instrumentals of Born to Die or the 70s psychedelic rock inspired riffs of Ultraviolence and hopefully that’ll show as well! Enjoy:D
Born to Die (Release Date: 27th January 2012)
Tumblr media
It’s been 8 years, and when you ask most people what they think of when they hear the name Lana Del Rey, they’ll probably dismiss her as the one who sings about being sad and doing coke and sleeping with older men. That’s the Born to Die impact. Say what you want but it’s one of only a handful of albums released by a female artist to have spent more than 300 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and it really established the mythos of “Lana Del Rey” because before all this, before all the think pieces from other women claiming she’d set feminism back hundreds of years with her music, before she ousted grayscale Effy Stonem as the queen of angsty teen Tumblr (which as you can probably guess was a subsection of the internet I was very much engulfed by, lmao), she was just Lizzie Grant, a relatively normal aspiring singer songwriter in her early twenties. But as Lana Del Rey, she was someone else-some beautiful, mystical being that personified the sentiment of being born in the wrong era. Whilst every other singer’s record labels seemed to be trying desperately to thrust them into the future and keep them on top of all the musical and stylistic trends, it was refreshing to hear someone whose music and visuals captured all the most glamorous elements of the past. Part Priscilla Presley/Jackie O reincarnation (the National Anthem video really illustrated how Lana is just as much a storyteller as she is a musician), part high level mobster’s wayward wife à la Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface, she was the good girl by day and the bad girl by night, and I think that’s a duality we can all relate to or would like to think we’re interesting enough to relate to deep down.
Her style from around this period was EVERYTHING. She had those grungy Tumblr girl elements, the camo jacket and the oversized pieces and the leather jackets, but she also heavily drew on the styles and silhouettes of the 50s and 60s with the beehives and the new look Dior inspired cinched waist dresses. Even now in 2020, I think this period is what most people would think if they were asked to describe Lana’s style. I made sure I got the grungy pieces in there with the chunky boots and the vinyl and the oversized leather but the foundation of her looks back then were usually these daintier throwback pieces like the white silk dress and the corset and the mint fur trimmed coat (House of Sunny’s Penny Pistachio coat).
Favourite lyrics from the album? “Now my life is sweet like cinnamon, like a fucking dream I'm living in” from Radio. Nobody asked but I’m gonna give it to you anyway.

Born to Die: The Paradise Edition (Release Date: 9th November 2012)
Tumblr media
Lana’s Paradise EP contains probably my absolute favourite song of her’s, Ride, and with that, the beautiful opening monologue that will stay in my mind forever. This era was of course ushered in by Tropico, the short film that included the premiere of the songs Bel Air, Body Electric and Gods and Monsters, which established the ethereal tone of this period-it’s in the name, after all. Both the album and the videos were other-worldly and leaned heavily on religious symbolism which I’m sure pissed off many a middle-aged bible basher at the time. Most prominent in her lyrics were reflections on the freedom of the open road which corresponded with visuals of biker gangs and desert dwellers and modern interpretations of the Wild West, as was an attempt to capture the nature of the so-called “American spirit” which as Lana portrayed it shared more qualities with a kind of celestial, transient being than any kind of solid concept or identity. She played an emotionally detached stripper and a haunted saloon-style-bar singer (almost looking like a runaway bride) and Eve the “first woman” all in the same album and honestly, if that’s not iconic, I don’t know what is. We saw SO many incredible red carpet looks in this period too which built upon this idea of her as the fallen angel tempted by original sin that Tropico established; I feel like this era was all about laying bare the soul of the character she played, this broken, delicate but ultimately liberated being that was so dangerous to the idea of the strong, stable modern feminist ideal. She went about it in COMPLETELY the wrong way in a post that betrayed the ignorance of the privilege she has as a white female performer, but I think this is what she was getting at in it and Ultraviolence only went on to bolster her critics.
In response to the criticism she still receives about the choice to wear a Native American war bonnet in her Ride music video, I’d like to say that it really seems like she’s learnt from that-actions speak louder than words and so though it’s not my place to say whether this makes up for that error, the work she’s done with Native American reparations-focussed foundations since and the money she’s donated to the cause says a lot about her intentions. Again, I want to stress that it’s not my place to say! But it’s a detail that is often overlooked so I thought I’d mention it here.
“I was a singer, not a very popular one. I once had dreams of becoming a beautiful poet. But upon an unfortunate series of events saw those dreams dashed and divided like a million stars in the night sky, that I wished on over and over again, sparkling and broken. But I didn’t really mind because I knew that it takes getting everything you ever wanted and then losing it to know what true freedom is.”
Tumblr media
Ultraviolence (Release Date: 13th June 2014)
Tumblr media
AH, Ultraviolence. My favourite of Lana’s albums and imo, a masterpiece. ONE skip. ONE. Sorry Guns and Roses. I got stoned in my back garden and listened to this (for research purposes ofc, heh) and ended up deciding that this is what I want to listen to when I die (also whilst stoned). It sounds dramatic but listening to this album in that state of mind is such a heavenly experience that I’d be too zen to notice myself slipping away into nothingness on the basis that if I didn’t as long as I could stay in that bubble of awe, nothingness forever wouldn’t be so scary after all. I know, I know, that sentence has big Jaden Smith’s old tweets energy. But if an album is what helps me get over an existential crisis, I beg you allow me the nonsensical ramblings about how I felt like I was ascending into the stars.
Though in terms of the lyrical content the public perception is probably correct, I think the reputation Ultraviolence has as Lana’s darkest, most gothic album (which is something I’ve in incorporated into the outfits I put together) is mistaken; instrumentally and visually it drew more on 70s psychedelic rock and the bohemian counter culture of the period than anything, and her stage looks are a clear reflection of that, and also the outfits I was most excited to channel. It seems counter-intuitive to the moody atmosphere I associate the tracklist with but it’s my go-to summer album; it’s raw (probably her most stripped back work along with NFR, lots of the songs are barely edited) and it’s gloomy but let’s be real, hot as fuck-don’t bother making a sex playlist, just put Ultraviolence on shuffle, and you’re good to go. This was the album where Lana debuted some of her most criticised lyrics and where the notion that she glamourises abuse comes from, one of the points she also seemed to be getting at in the Instagram post, but imo it’s fair to say that she sang truthfully about the initial allure of a dangerous relationship and the nature of the mindset that facilitates staying with somebody poisonous where you do feel like you’re nothing without them. Turning horrific experiences into romantic tragedies is how Lana has always made her music and yeah, out of context there are some fucked up lyrics on the album, but policing how a woman expresses her trauma and complaining that she glorifies weakness because she wrote honestly about the reality of a complicated partnership is hardly any more “feminist” than the lyrics themselves. I can only guess that the reason Lana felt the need to bring up this criticism in 2020 is because these darker themes are going to be revisited in her upcoming album and that in spite of the issues with the way she expressed herself, this time critics will be more accepting of how she chooses to address these themes.
On a lighter note “yeah my boyfriend's pretty cool, but he's not as cool as me” will always be a great line. Simple but effective. If my boyfriend ever is cooler than me it’ll be doing Lana a disservice.
Tumblr media
Honeymoon (Release Date: 18th September 2015)
Tumblr media
Considering that a lot of other Lana fans are of the opinion that this is her best album, I find it weird that I really don’t remember all that much about this period, other than High by the Beach being released and then hearing Salvatore and Freak for the first time. I guess because she didn’t do a Honeymoon specific tour and didn’t make that many public appearances in this period? It was definitely harder for me to find visual reference points beyond the HbtB music video and the cover art, so I mostly drew on the general vibe of the album, a cinematic accompaniment to a summer in Italy or the South of France, filled with exotic instrumentals and the sense of impending romantic doom that Lana does so well. I suppose if I associate the visuals of this era with anything it’s idyllic florals and warm tones, bygone country club pool days, a rich American’s vacation in Southern Europe, long walks on the beach (and as our Lord and Saviour Jujubee once said, big dicks and fried chicken). Apparently inspired by Lana’s relationship with Francesco Carrozini, it’s a hazy story of some ultra-feminine, submissive archetype becoming unhealthily enchanted by a mysterious “foreign man” who’s ultimately not all that good for her, which as the story goes turned out to be quite prophetic. Going against the grain, it’s my least favourite of her albums after Lust for Life, but in spite of that, I will always remember how obsessed I was with the sax riffs (I think? I don’t know my instruments all that well so forgive me, lol) on Freak and I definitely understand why it’s a firm favourite for so many.
“You could be a bad motherfucker, but that don’t make you a man.” was truly a cultural reset of a line.
-on an unrelated note, OMG, I never realised how I have my mouth open in literally every fucking photo I take, somebody tell me how to pose, please and thank you-
Tumblr media
Lust for Life (Release Date: 21 July 2017)
Tumblr media
Lust for Life is a controversial one. On the one hand, I appreciate that this album was the victory cry of a happier, more independent, politically-aware Lana in spite of it apparently being a far more optimistic sounding album than the one she wanted to release, but on the other there were way too many collaborations for me and this meant that the album lacked a sense of cohesion and the characteristic narrative thread that usually runs throughout her tracklist. Aside from Love, Cherry, Get Free and Tomorrow Never Came, most of the songs on the album aren’t hugely memorable and it’s a crying shame that a collaboration with STEVIE FUCKING NICKS of all people left so much to be desired. Coming from two witchy icons, I expected something absolutely magical so maybe I was setting myself up for failure, but come on. We could’ve had a real anthem there.
Aesthetically speaking however, this is one of my favourite eras for Lana, which is unsurprising when you consider the tracklist contains references to both Woodstock and Coachella. I’m not gonna lie, I think seeing Coachella fashion in my early teens was my style awakening-I remember seeing Vanessa Hudgens’ outfits and being like, wow, I want to be her (oh, what a fall from grace)-so the late 60s/early 70s flower power groupie style Lana adopted in this period really spoke to me. It was all long hair and dreamy pastels, and this era included some of the most head-to-toe coordinated looks we’ve ever seen from her. Of course I couldn’t completely abandon the grungy touches that I love, that I tend to associate with the early Lana street style days and the Paradise and Ultraviolence music videos rather than with this album, but I’m never gonna pass up an opportunity to whack out a good floral two piece and putting together Lust for Life inspired looks is the perfect excuse to do that.
Tumblr media
So, that marks the end of this post! If you made it to the end, thank you so much for reading! I have a Yesstyle lookbook and review to edit but now that I’ve finished that, I’m trying to go down more of a style inspiration focussed  route with my lookbooks rather than just putting together outfits from clothes I’ve just bought (though I might still do one every so often to bring in a new season-let’s just ignore the fact that they’re all blending into one bc climate change for now, one catastrophe at a time please universe). I find that if you have a specific idea in mind of what you want, it’s super easy to find something similar on Depop and Ebay and that way you avoid buying new things and also take old things off a person’s hands that might otherwise end up being thrown out by a charity shop and then dumped into a landfill from there. Something I’d LOVE to do before this year is out is put together a lookbook based on the most stylish TV shows of the last decade, but that probably won’t be for a while-even so, if you have any recommendations of series to watch which could fit into this category, let me know!
To finish, I need to go a little bit off-topic so forgive me, but I truly don’t know why this even needs to be said: WEAR A FUCKING MASK. IT IS NOT A POLITICAL ISSUE. IT IS A BASIC HYGIENIC PRACTICE THAT HELPS SPREAD THE STOP OF A HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS DISEASE! RUDIMENTAL SCIENCE! NOT A CHANCE TO PROVE HOW “EDGY” YOU ARE! SERIOUSLY, STOP MAKING A FUCKING PANDEMIC ABOUT YOURSELF! NOBODY ENJOYS WEARING THEM BUT THEY HELP PROTECT OTHERS! SO UNLESS YOU HAVE A VALID MEDICAL REASON NOT TO BE WEARING ONE, DON’T BE A SELFISH PRICK!
Sorry to sign off on a rant-y note with something that has nothing to do with Lana, lol, but all the stupidity has been grinding me gears lately and I had to let it out on behalf of all retail workers: if we can wear a mask for 9 hours at a time, YOU can tolerate the mild discomfort of wearing one for 10 minutes. I know this doesn’t apply to the majority of people but there’s always a couple of arseholes, isn’t there!?
Stay safe,
Lauren x
