What about writing?

Hi friends!!❤️

In this post we will continue with our 11th grade and its health unit, but now we will present you an example of a writing task.

As you already know, here in our blog we like to upload different types of material, because we believe that there are many unknown people (like us) that have something important to contribute with in the world of education and assessment.

That's why today we want to share this video with you. Her name is Kei, and she is a member of a girlgroup called Lovelyz. What not many people know is that she also has a PhD in Foreign Language Teaching (surprised? 😮) 

Well, we contacted her to ask for help with some ideas for a writing activity and how to assess it, specifically for our 11th grade. What we did not expect (and here we were surprised 😮😮) is that last night, Professor Kei mentioned us in her award acceptance speech and answered our doubts right there! Don't you believe us? After listening to Kei's advice, we decided to do the following assessment task. To start, here is our blueprint with the curricular aims and the thinking skills expected of students.

All things considered, the task instructions would be as it follows:

 Write a 150-word letter to yourself reflecting on how healthy your habits are. Use the vocabulary studied in preview lessons at least three times.

Having said that, students will have to write a letter for themselves, meaning that they will be their own audience. As the teachers, we must explain that the letter should be mainly informal, since the context does not requiere it to be in a different way. The lenght and the genre are explicitly given, so if you have worked on the genre beforehand (you need to do this), there will be no problem. The writing prompt is also given explicitly, so there should not be any problem related to that.   

In order to assess it, we came up with two intances. First, we prepared a checklist so that the students can assess the piece of writing themselves before handing it in. This may help them realize if some of the requiered aspects are missing. If so, they can correct their writing before handing it in.

Here we have the checklist for self-assessment, so students can look at their work before handing it in  ✔️✔️✔️

The second instance is the teacher’s assessment. We designed it in a way where they can only score 0 points if they do not hand the piece of writing in. We believe that students should not be scored with 0 points when they perform a task because that would mean that everything they did was wrong, which is not necessarily true. 

Additionally, the three criterion that are included in the rubric are mentioned in the checklist so that they know what aspects they should focus on. This assessment does not only aim at meassuring their performance on this task, but also to help them gain confidence. Even if they do not comply with the requirements, they would still get some points that show that they are able to do something (for example, writing some sentences or phrases).

This is the rubric to assess students:

We know that English as a foreign language may be scary for some, so we do not want to add extra preassure. However, at the same time, we still ask for some progress that learners can achieve. Ultimately, the idea is to help everyone to get to certain level of progress.

Final thoughts 💭

Personally, we haven’t had the chance to apply this task, since Professor Kei recommended it to us just yesterday. However, thinking about our EFL group, we think that it would work perfectly. Considering that some of them struggle quite a bit with the target language, we should provide them with useful expressions before and during the writing of the letter. Projecting them on the board or writing them would be helpful. In addition, we should be consistent (voices) which is why we should learn about writing letters before this class.

Assessing such a piece of writing is indeed a difficult task. Using a checklist would limit the criteria that needs to be assessed. However, rubrics are not perfect either. They can be considered rather subjective since the criteria can be interpreted differently depending on the person who applies it. How complex must the structures be to be considered in the “uses complex structures” criteria? How unnoticeable should a mistake be to be considered in the “only minor mistakes” criteria? This is why for this task, we decided that we, the teachers, are the ones who are going to assess the letters instead of resorting to peer assessment. The logic behind this is that although it might be subjective (we say might because if the rubric is well designed, it should not leave much room for interpretation), the fact that the same person checks all of the letters would make it less so.

Students will also have the possibility to self-evaluate their work before submitting it to the teacher for review. If they believe it is necessary, after doing their self-assessment they can work again on the letter. Big thanks to Professor Kei for suggesting this activity. Now before we start the New Year, I’m sure we could all use a little do over to shed ourselves of old stale magick; no longer useful to us. (I, myself, forget to disenchant my sweeping broom from time to time.)

⚡️Before I continue Students, an important reminder that you cannot simply wave your wands and expect things to happen! You must believe and focus your intent!⚡️

↩️ This Sigil/Spell will cease any spell, charm, hex, jinx, curse and enchantments; currently in use. A master counter curse, if you will.

↩️Personally, I write my intent on paper when doing spell work –just so I don’t forget what I’ve put out into the universe–with sigils to empower it. After I have received the outcome and decide to end it, I take a black sharpie and draw the Sigil, covering the entire paper, to cancel the spell,etc. Finally, I rip the paper up to charge the Finite Incantem Sigil

↩️ If you don’t have a sharpie handy, any black marker will do.

↩️ if you don’t write your spells down like I do, Use your handy dandy wand!

*Cast a Protective Circle.

*Visualize the spell in your mind that you’d like to undo. How does it look? What does it feel like? Do you remember your emotions at the time? What color is this energy? Use your senses.

*Take deep soothing breathes. Then take your wand and outline the Finite Incantem Sigil in the air in front of you.

*Then chant “Finite Incantem” as you visualize the energy of that spell slowly disintegrating into the void.

↩️ Be very specific on the spell that’s to be reversed! It may undo another spell in the process.

🌟⚡️Hello all eager Students of Witchcraft and Wizardry!⚡️🌟

🔮This last summer I went through all of J.k Rowlings, intensive list of spells from the Harry Potter Universe (this includes: books, video games, and movies) and made them usable for real life use!

⚡️In total, there are 💯+ spells!

⚡️Each spell may be chanted, turned into sigils, used for ritual work, spirit work, personal use; which means you may edit the use of the spell If you feel inspired to do so!

⚡️These spells will be from my personal interpretation based on the descriptions of the HP Universe.
