Digimon Tamers - Episode 1
Dear God...the vibes are immaculate. THIS WAS SO GOOD! So cinematic! So atmospheric! What a fabulous pilot episode. I'm definitely hooked. I'm trying not to overhype this show because the internet has sung its praises to the high heavens and I don't want to be let down. Let's take it one episode at a time and see how it goes :) (so far, so good).
Notes:
-So many thoughts, so many questions. Firstly, I'm getting the vibe that this is a parallel universe to the worlds of Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02. In those worlds digimon weren't a fictional concept (as far as I know) before they became real. In this world Takato knows digimon from video games and TCG before he meets one in person. Also. the world isn't aware that digimon are real, so this wouldn't be in the 02 world post-epilogue.
-A very small cast in this one! Only 3 kids (so far). I think this could be a very good thing. Tighter writing and more developed characters. These kids have barely said anything but they already feel more 3 dimensional than the 02 kids lol. Also, their designs are a lot more subdued which I think helps with the realistic feel.
-Culumon was...a little annoying, but cute at the same time. I love his retractable ears and that he asks a zillion questions like a toddler. Just wish he didn't say "culu" ever 2 seconds lol. He looks like a magical girl companion.
-We're still in Tokyo, Shinjuku this time around. Will we ever get a Digimon MC who's a country bumpkin? That could be fun.
-The gamer in me shudders at all of the new digimon that are about to be introduced. Good thing I'm not a "raise them all" kind of completionist.
-Digimon TCG anime debut! When they were like "Option card!" I was like "omg! I know that! I know the rules!" I wonder if the TCG will show up again or if they just used it to kickstart the plot?
-Takato's school DOESN'T have uniforms!? What kind of anime school is this!? (No seriously, I thought that was more of a rural school thing).
-I can relate to Takato designing his own digimon during class. I totally did that in elementary school too (with Pokemon as my inspo tho)
-I'm not in love with the new digivice design (a little bulky), but I like that it has a keychain strap. How practical!
-I'm not sure where Takato is getting the "tamers" vocab from. I don't think that would be referenced too much in the TCG, so he must be getting it from the video games.
-Love that Takato lives above his family's bakery. Give me ALL the anime food!
-I just googled this, but apparently the "guil" in "Guilmon" comes from "guilty." Didn't see that coming. I thought it might be Gila monster lol. Of course we get another stinkin' dinosaur-like digimon for the MC. Oh well. I guess that's what the little boys like. He's kinda cute, I suppose
-I don't know the main girl's name yet, but damn, what a badass! I feel like we haven't gotten this kind of female character yet. Closest would be maybe Hikari in her edgier moments, but she's more on the sweet side. I know that the furries like her partner digimon lol (Renamon, I believe?) To be honest, I'm not sold on her design yet. I think it's a little weird looking. Maybe she'll grow on me.
-When Guilmon's egg hatched I thought he died lol. I forgot that an egg cracked in half can be a good thing too.
-I was kind of giggling when they kept showing the scientists in their cyberpunk chairs and wearing VR headsets. Very 2000s sci-fi vibes (still looks cool, don't get me wrong). When they kept saying "wild one" I was just thinking "hey I heard you were a wild one oooooh~"
-When Jianliang's sister dropped Terriermon on his face I died lol. Why was that so funny? I'm so making a gif later...
Tumblr media
-My guy (Takato) really saw a rat infested tunnel and just crawled right through it. I hope you have a good immune system because Jesus...
-The concept of Takato meeting a digimon and then immediately realizing "oh wait, a fire breathing dinosaur IRL is maybe not a good thing" was great. And of course they had to use it as a cliff hanger! I'm wondering if Guilmon will be able to speak or if he'll be more baby-like.
-Guilmon's existence raises many questions. I guess we technically already knew that people can create digimon, we've seen that happen. However, we haven't seen it happen so casually/easily. Does Takato have some sort of special power or can multiple people do this? Also, if Guilmon was born at child level, what happened to the previous 2 levels. Did Takato draw those in his notebook so they're just coded in there?
(My questions are all rhetorical...I shall wait for the show to answer them, so no spoilers please).

Sorry to bother, but I was wondering if you saw the theory about the Oathkeeper keyblade actually being a symbolism of Riku’s Light instead of Kairi. We just assume it’s Kairi’s cause the star keychain and it’s more ‘girly’ but I think it’s colored like it is to show it’s the Light. The yellow part that is inside of the heart, is the light shining in? Oblivion is totally based on the Past. Oathkeeper is Riku’s future. How he wants to protect Sora , like Chikai, it’s an Oath. A promise. Thoughts?
I have seen a little bit of that theory on twitter, but at the moment I don’t have much to say much about it, especially since both oblivion and oathkeeper were absent in kh3 other than as Roxas’ keyblades and referenced with the “Proof of Promises” (for collecting all Lucky Emblems) and “Proof of Times Past”. And I wouldn’t say that it’s just an assumption that Oathkeeper is symbolic of Kairi, because it was, at least for sure in the past:
Nomura: “The Keyblades the boy who knows Sora is holding are the Oathkeeper and Oblivion from the first game. The precious “Oathkeeper”, which Sora received from Kairi. The jet-black Keyblade, symbolic of Riku. / The Oblivion, at first, was called Riku’s Keyblade. The boy who has the Keyblades from Riku (darkness) and Kairi (light)……Who is he!?“-Famitsu Interview
Of course, we know from the fact that Roxas now wields those two keyblades that it doesn’t ONLY have to be symbolic of one person, but unless Sora receives something from Riku that results in him being able to wield Oathkeeper again, I wouldn’t jump the gun and say it’s symbolic of him.
There is one thing about Oathkeeper that I’ve always wondered about though, and that is the fact that in both concept art and in the games, it is shown with two different keychains.  One is the familiar charm that Kairi gives to Sora (which Roxas also uses), and the other is a star/paopu charm just like the one we see in CoM from Namine.

“Where are we going, Maya-san?”—It wasn’t like Eve was concerned. She trusted her girlfriend more tan anything, but walking around in the park while completely blind was, undestandably, a little risky.
“We’re almost there now! Don’t open your eyes yet”.
Maya guided her by the hand, hoping Eve didn’t notice hers was shaking slightly. Oh god, what if she was sweating? She hadn’t thought about that. She knew Eve wouldn’t say anything because she was an angel on Earth, but it’d still be embarrassing. She shook the thought out of her head.
The silver lock she had bought the day before felt heavy in her pocket. Maybe it was too son. Too serious, too final. We’ve been dating for six months, she thought, isn’t it enough? A lot of couples got married after that time. And get divorced shortly after… No, don’t go there, not now…
What if Eve thought she was proposing to her? She didn’t actually hate the idea. Of course they were too young, Maya had just turned eighteen and Eve still had a few months to go. And even if I did propose, we can’t even get married here. Maya tried to shove that bitterness down, catching herself just in time to prevent Eve from tripping over a step.
She let go of her girlfriend’s hand, taking a second to wipe it on her denim skirt.
“Okay, we’re here. You can open now.”
Eve wasn’t sure what she was looking at. There seemed to be a lot going on. It was some sort of iron cage, with a number of charms and trinkets hanging from it. Her first thought was that Maya had taken her to a modern art exhibition, or maybe to a memorial monument. But why?
“Here, Eve-san…” Maya took her hand and put something smooth and cold in it. Her cheeks were an adorable shade of pink.
Eve raised her eyebrows.
“Do you want me to lock you up, Maya-san?”
“Wha-?” the older girl had turned beet-red.
“Or maybe you want to lock me up? It’d be fine either way.”
“No, no, no one’s getting locked up!” Maya was sure her face was the color of Tomoe-san’s hair now. She knew she wasn’t a master of romance, but how had the situation backfired so badly? She took a deep breath and tried to compose herself. Eve was looking at her, puzzled, her blue eyes making Maya’s already burning face hotter.
“Sorry, it’s just… couples come here and leave locks with their names on them. I thought it’d be nice if we did it too. It’s kind of dumb, actually, so I don’t mind if you don’t want to…”
Eve forgot for a moment that they were in a public place and silenced Maya’s soft, warm mouth with her own. She checked out the corner of her eye if there was anyone around. Just a businessman talking frantically on his pone, nothing to worry about. They could have this. She could freely kiss her girlfriend, for now. Maya may have felt the same, because she could feel her melt into the kiss. They kept their foreheads pressed together after breaking the kiss, just a little out of breath, until a dog barked in the distance and startled them, sending them both into a fit of giggles.
Eve decided to explore the landmark a bit more closely. It wasn’t common of Maya to do romantic gestures like that, mostly because it embarrassed her. Eve didn’t mind though, it was just another of the little things that made Maya, Maya. That made her fall more in love with her every day. She was curious about this sudden whim of hers.
They inspected the other locks, keychains, and various knick-knacks others had left before them. Most only had names or initials written on it. Some were old, like a big lock with “S+K” carved on it, rusty from the passage of time. Some were new, like the heart-shaped keychain with “Mei+Kouichi” written on it with a Sharpie. Eve’s heart skipped a beat when her girlfriend shifted closer to her.
“I just wanted to do something nice. For us.” Maya spoke softly, her eyes drifting downwards, “It’s always you doing the grand romantic gestures, so I thought…”
“Maya-san.”
“L-like I said, it’s okay if you don’t like it…”
“Maya-san!”
The older girl stopped her rambling, puzzled at Eve’s outburst.
“I like it.” She said, softly this time, “I love it, Maya-san”
Eve’s smile caused a pleasant warmth to bloom in Maya’s chest. Eve took her hand and squeezed it between hers. She leaned in closer, until their noses touched.
“And I love you” she whispered against Maya’s lips, just for her.
“We’re still in public, Eve-san…” Maya pulled away, but her cheeks were still red.
“Oh.” Eve took the lock from Maya’s hand, examining it. She looked a bit disappointed that her girlfriend had ended the kiss so quickly, “Should we write our names on it?”
“Right! Damn, I completely forgot, let me just…” Maya took a Sharpie out of her pocket, but when she was about to write “Eve♡Maya” on the lock, a dreadful thought slipped into her mind. She withdrew the marker and shoved the lock back in her pocket.
“What is it?” Eve sounded confused, her eyes wide with concern. “Maya-san…”
“I’m sorry.” She felt a lump in her throat, “This was a dumb idea.”
“Why? I told you I wanted to do it.”
“What if someone sees it? If they know PasuPare, they’ll surely know it’s us.” Oh. Eve couldn’t argue with that. Maybe it wouldn’t be a problema if I didn’t have such an uncommon name, she thought. We could just brush it off as a coincidence.
“I didn’t even consider it.” Maya’s eyes were bright with unshed tears, “I was just so excited when Uehara-san told me about this place.” She took off her glasses to wipe her eyes with the back of her hand. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have brought you here. I’m so stupid.”
“You’re not stupid” Eve guided her crying girlfriend to the steps that led to the landmark, and they sat down pressed against each other’s side. “Remember what Chisato-san told us when she came out to us?”
“She told us not to tell anyone, because it would ruin her career. And that she was just telling us because we’re friends and she trusts us.”
“See? You aren’t the only one who feels this way.” Eve just wanted to hold her, but given the circumstances she settled for giving her hand a small squeeze. Maya responded by resting her head on Eve’s shoulder.
“I guess I’m just not as ready as I thought.” She mumbled, defeated.
“It’s okay. I’m happy with the way things are now. Samurai have a secret lovers all the time in movies.” She closed he reyes, wondering if she should say what was on her mind right now, “Besides, I’d rather have you all to myself for as long as I can.”
Yes, it was cheesy and embarrassing and sincere and so Eve, Maya couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle. She took the lock from her pocket again.
“Guess I just bought this for nothing…” She said. Eve felt bad that her earlier excitement had vanished.
“Maya-san!” Eve got up suddenly, almost knocking her girlfriend over in the proccess.
“Whoa, what’s gotten into you?”
“I have an idea.”
“About?” Her eyes widened at the realization, “Oh.”
“Do you trust me?” She asked, her cheeks pink. What a dumb question, Maya thought as she handed her the lock and the marker. She observed over Eve’s shoulder as she scribbled three words in clear cursive handwriting.
“What does it say?”
“Minä rakastan sinua.” She put her arm around Maya’s shoulders, leaning into her, “Finnish for ‘I love you’.”
She wore the same expression she did when she’d said it the first time, all those months ago. Smiling with her lips as well as her eyes, fixated on Maya’s own, overcome with emotion.
This time, it was Maya who kissed her, long and deep. The rest of the world could wait.

costumes 3!
So in my last post I referenced how John’s military uniform compared and contrasted with the other clothes we’ve seen so far. Moving forward in S3E4 and E12/13 he was in civilian wear. OR WAS HE?!
Tumblr media
Remember what he used to look like.
Tumblr media
So, the black hair ribbon stays because that’s just fashion (we had some fun speculation on why black: whether or not it’s Prussian military inspired, to hide grease from people’s hair, or just Not French.) Also, the hat. I guess you can’t argue the hat is similar because it’s a tricorn, but... it’s black?
Of course there’s no military insignia but the coat he’s wearing just screams MILITARY INSPIRED to me. The collar is nearly the same, and the detailing on the HUGE BUTTONS and button holes would be in InStyle’s Get This Look: Military Accents. I feel like if you modernized John he’d be one of those guys that would still go on base to get a buzzcut. He’s a SOLDIER!
What’s next?
Tumblr media
I viewed this a lot and I can’t decide if it’s a different suit from the still above. Still! Big buttons, contrasting collar/cuffs, long ruffled sleeves. MILITARY.
Tumblr media
John gave up on the fancy cravat game and is still hiding his hands in his sleeves.
I know Terry Dresbach has said that she doesn’t design costumes where color doesn’t have any deep intrinsic meaning or symbolism but I think it’s kind of funny that the character named JOHN GREY is always in GRAY. And when Isobel marries him SHE’S IN GRAY TOO. That’s what I call branding.
Also interesting that this is basically an embroidered version of the first suit: Gray on the outside, blue on the inside. Both traditional menswear colors. If you saw a guy in a gray suit and a blue shirt, it wouldn’t look weird to modern eyes. I think I remember Dresbach saying that was the idea behind Jaime’s black and ivory season 2 suit: to look romantic and modern. Considering the colors of the other guys at the ball/show, John’s costumes are fairly subdued. He doesn’t need to prove that he’s a BAMF in velvet or red satin. He just is. Just like his #1 Pal Forever, Jaime Fraser.
We’re also still in MILITARY INSPIRED LAND. We’ve got metallic buttons, wide/long button holes. The three corned jacket pocket matches his military uniform’s. He’s wearing subdued reds, blues, and cream/grays. Look at his tab collar and then look at these guys:
Tumblr media
Tab collars and simple lace cravats. DING DING DING.
As to the sapphire, shrug emoji. “In the book” he has two sapphires, Hector’s ring, and Jaime’s, which he puts into a paperweight. A beautiful, symbolic, paperweight is just not going to PLAY on TV! The idea behind the prettiest keychain fob in history is sweet, but I feel like a guy like John would have put it to better use? As a ring or part of a watch? I don’t even know if they had watches, just invent one and slam a sapphire on it. Or a cravat pin? Whatever, I don’t know guys.

Fan Shrine Fridays: Lots of Lovin' for Your Fave Series!
This week has been quite heavy for the anime community all over the world due to the horrific events that happened to Kyoto Animation. As we band together to support Kyoto Animation and grieve, here's a reminder to be a bit kinder to yourselves too. I'm here to (hopefully!) bring you smiles with this latest edition of Fan Shrine Fridays, so sit back, relax and look at all the neat collections. Who knows, maybe you'll pick up on some pointers on how to modify or build your own collections! And maaaaybe, just maybe, you can show 'em off here for the whole world to see!
Our focus for this week: series-specific collections! I've seen some serious love for many series in your collections, and I find that one of the coolest types of collections are the ones centered around one series. Seeing all the different types of merch collected for that one series is so impressive! Let's check out some of them that some of you have sent our way.
We kick of this week with Shawn's DARLING in the FRANXX collection that focuses on his fave character, Zero Two! My favorite part of this collection is the grumpy Zero Two pillow that's wearing a DARLING in the FRANXX cap right next to the print of Zero Two with a beaming smile. The rose is a really nice touch! If you'd like to get a closer look at Shawn's Zero Two collection, click here.
Next up, we've got Twitter user Jeff_Chef89 showing off some love for My Hero Academia! The collection features some neat All Might, Deku, Bakugo and Todoroki, along with some Pops... and are those signed BD sets? Nice! Looking forward to seeing this collection grow with more My Hero Academia goodies! Here's a closer look at Jeff_Chef89's collection.
If you're a fan of Saga of Tanya the Evil, you'll dig this collection! Twitter user TanyaTheEvil1 brings us their Saga of Tanya the Evil collection with various goods to show off. I really like the use of the mugs to hold Tanya pens that serves to expand on that collection! There's pins, badges, keychains, prints, a Tanya nendoroid, and of course, the novels and manga of the series. ...But my eye spies something in these pics... what is Taiga from Toradora! doing here?! Are you lost? Need me to call Ryuji for you? Anyway, you can get a closer glimpse of TanyaTheEvil1's collection here and here.
Do you like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure? I sure do! Twitter user VIXXstuck's JoJo collection isn't big, but it sure does feature characters that are loved. We've got Giorno Giovanna and Bruno Bucciarati from Part 5, and then towering behind them is Josuke Higashikata from Part 4, doing his signature pose! Josuke looks as if he's going "Stop, you must be THIS tall to be on this shelf, my friends," while Giorno and Bruno aren't at all pleased. VIXXstuck mentions on their tweet that they have more JoJo items, but they didn't show 'em?! Please, I need more JoJos in my life, so if you've got those JoJo collections, I wanna see 'em!
For those of you rewatching Neon Genesis Evangelion or perhaps getting into it for the first time (hoo boy, that's quite the ride), here's a collection just for you! Twitter user FL_Browningtons shows off their Evangelion collection, to which they say "Lord knows I love evangelion." Same here. FL_Browningtons' collection has a lot to appreciate, going from the framed posters, to an impressive figure display depicting the fight between Asuka and the Eva Series! And there's also... Evangelions units on go karts?! What?! There's a lot going on in that last photo! Unrelated to Evangelion, there's a K-On! display of all the band members, and then there's Daft Punk on the lower right of the photo! Alright FL_Browningtons, you best cough up the rest of your collection, 'cause I wanna see it! You can get a closer look at their collection here, here, here and here.
Since we're focusing on series-specific collections this time around, here's an extra treat for y'all:
I've been working on my very own Yakuza-themed game carrying case! If you've played Yakuza and have gone to the karaoke bars in the game, you're already likely hearing the song it's referencing in your head right now. There's a few more things I'd like to add to this case before it's fully done, so stay tuned for how it turns out!
That does it for this week's Fan Shrine Fridays! Want to be in the next one? Show us your love for anime and manga and send over your collection photos by sending your selection of photos via e-mail to [email protected] titled "Fan Shrine Friday Photo Submission". Please don't tweet over your submissions, because I likely won't get to see all of those; I can better organize and track them via e-mail. We'll be showing 'em off every Friday, so if you think you have the best collection and you want it to be seen by fans from all over, this is your chance!
What did you think of this week's collections? Think you got the coolest anime/manga collection? Got any ideas for possible themes to focus on? Tell us and send over your collection photos to [email protected]!
