the post about fast fashion/sewing one’s own clothes blew up again… honestly the more i think about it the angrier i am about it. with both clothing and furniture we sort of live in a world where the market is being overtaken by disposable items made with cheap materials at the lowest possible labor cost. and like, not to diss ikea or anything — god knows they’ve supplied me with enough cheap bookshelves — but this is exactly why i ended up building my own desk.
my dad tells stories about his mom, who was very talented at sewing — it wasn’t her “day job” but in that part of rural iowa in the 60s she was the person you called if, say, you needed a wedding dress on next to no notice. (i’m also told she was excellent at baking pies, but that’s beside the point.) at that time and place, it was legitimately *cheaper* to make your own clothes than to buy them from the store. they would be made of much the same materials, except that you would substitute your own labor for that of whoever assembled the storebought garment.
today, the fabric to make a shirt will almost certainly cost you more than an equivalent department store shirt would. to say nothing of the cost of your time and labor. part of this is that people who sew their own clothes generally don’t want to waste their time on shit fabric, so fabric stores don’t sell quite the same grade of shreddable polyester. part of this is that our modern globalized supply chain has minimized both labor and materials costs as hard as it can, and this optimization has intertwined labor and materials sourcing a lot more than they apparently were in the 60s.
let’s turn back to the subject of furniture. the equivalent of the cheap polyester department-store shirt is the ikea desk. the desk surface is made of laminated particle-board, which is lighter and cheaper than actual wood; the desk is sold to you flat-pak, and you assemble it yourself, thus saving on labor costs. the laminate surface will probably delaminate after a few years’ use. also as with the cheap shirt, any damage is near-impossible to fix — you could sand and refinish a scuffed plywood surface, but there’s no sanding laminated particle-board. it’s also harder to modify to suit one’s needs — i can drill a neat hole for a monitor arm in my plywood desk much more easily than in a particle-board surface.
in both cases, what do you do if you want a slightly higher grade of item? well, obviously you’ll have to pay more money — but it’s difficult to be sure you’re really getting your money’s worth. you have to spend ages and ages comparison-shopping and reading reviews about how quality has really gone downhill since production moved to [new country]. often — especially with clothes — the thing that your money is actually paying for is Style, as separate from Substance. or good advertising. i’ve been halfheartedly in the market for a decent couch for some time, and i’ve noticed that nearly every apartment makeover video on youtube is sponsored by the same furniture website, which of course has provided a free couch — that the youtuber assures us is Really Good, For The Price. as soon as a manufacturer acquires a reputation for Quality, it is in their economic interest to sell out as hard and fast as they can and pocket the increased margin from selling crap at the price of quality until people notice. and in a world where most shopping has moved online, it’s difficult to tell whether you’re still in the actual-quality period. i’m not sure if there even *are* furniture stores around here at quality levels in between ikea and danish concepts (suggesting a market for a mid-tier scandinavian furniture purveyor, perhaps hailing from norway or finland).
because of the sort of person that i am, i tire rapidly of the endless comparison shopping. i don’t want to become a damn couch supply chain expert, i just want to retire the folding chair from my living room. it can’t be *that* hard to build a couch, can it? well, not if one is privileged enough to have the tools and time and space to do it in. i think most of the comments and tags on the fast fashion post are from people wishing they had one or more of the above to make their own clothes with. speaking from direct personal experience, a sewing machine is at least both cheaper and easier to find space for than a minimally equipped woodshop.
the other common piece of advice is to buy used, buy from a thrift store or an estate sale. unfortunately hunting down all your shit used also takes a lot of time and effort, and particularly in the case of furniture hauling the stuff home is a nontrivial logistical problem. again, money or more nebulous forms of privilege (the friend with the truck) are needed to smooth these roadblocks. and it’s really amazing that the solution to “i want an item that is not garbage” is “buy an item manufactured at a time when they were not yet garbage”. yes, of course, the less-durable instances won’t have survived the passage of time, but that’s only part of the effect. things genuinely used to be manufactured to a higher standard of quality. my sewing machine is from ebay; it’s the same model my *other* grandma had, a baseline singer consumer-grade machine. all its gears are metal, and it has a heavy-ass cast metal housing, too. the other household sewing machine is a modern singer consumer-grade machine and for all its fancy stitches it looks sort of like a doll’s toy — the plastic gears are going to break at some point, or the motor will burn out, and if it turns out that the motor on the modern edition is designed to be user-replaceable i will personally eat a hat. i suppose we also used to ask a lot more of our consumer-grade sewing machines, back when sewing one’s own clothes was a baseline household skill for everyone but Rich People, instead of a hobby that consumes more money than it saves you.
i don’t know if my post really has a conclusion. i’m just angry that we live in a fallen world full of miraculous technology and yet we have not solved the seemingly simple economic problem of exchanging a reasonable amount of money for a newly produced durable good that isn’t a complete piece of shit. i am a *robotics engineer*, for the love of fuck; i have a complicated, rare, well-compensated skillset. it cannot *possibly* be a comparative advantage for me to spend my time building a couch or sewing a shirt instead of paying someone to do it for me (ideally also, if i may ask for a miracle, someone who gets things like fair pay and healthcare and vacation time). why is this transaction so damn hard??

I found this beautiful brick home in Hudson, New York that was simply restored. It’s not overdone, and it’s not a full-on modern renovation. It has 3bds. & 2ba. $1.250M
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a simple restoration. The wood was painted, but it’s been stripped, bleached, and traces of paint were left in the grooves to highlight the millwork. It’s light and bright w/o white paint. Notice the pocket doors are intact and the door to the room was minimally stripped of paint.
Tumblr media
The floor is original and sanded almost to the bare wood, so it’s light and matches the moldings.
Tumblr media
Again, the original floors were sanded in the kitchen and the fireplace was left untouched. Notice the soapstone sink- nothing fancy, but it works.
Tumblr media
The kitchen is simple and beautiful.
Tumblr media
The original steep stairs and door were not touched, except to be refinished.
Tumblr media
This peeling wall was left alone. Doesn’t it look like a wallpaper pattern? Look at the texture.
Tumblr media
The railing, bannister and newel post were left dark and aged, but the stairs were replaced.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love how they left the random beams and old brick chimneys.
Tumblr media
They used simple white subway tile and classic floor tiles. All the walls were left bare brick.
Tumblr media
In this bd. the fireplace surround bears a deep old patina. On the left is a stripped wall. There’s no reason to paint all the wood white, do expensive repairs and all that - this place is light, bright, and has the original character.
Tumblr media
Look at the floors in this room- they left the bumpy texture. The walls may have been in poor condition and they were covered in simple cement- no wallboard.
Tumblr media
The basement stairs are original and they made a wine cellar down here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The back yard is cute.
Tumblr media
Plus, there is a parking pad around the the block and stairs to the yard. I’d rather see a simple restoration like this than an expensive modern remodel that removes all the character.

WIP Wednesday: Writing At The Speed of Quick Before It’s Gone!
So last year, this trope mashup thread was going around, and I gave @o-rchidae a mashup which resulted in two ideas that both needed to exist. We each took one and mine resulted in a silly bit of fluff that I had loads of fun writing.
It also threatened to spawn a sequel. Of course, the sequel was full of stuff that was an even bigger mystery to me than the British medical system and I had other things to do, so it kinda foundered.
Until yesterday.
Yesterday, someone happened to leave kudos on a completely unrelated work, which got me listening to my Go To Peter song on loop for the first time in ages, which...actually convinced the little photojournalist to come back and start chattering at me.
Since then I’ve been writing as fast as I can and peppering o-rchidae with questions in hopes of getting something worked up before Peter decides to wander off to Adamstown or something.
-
-
Peter listened to the rise and fall of his host’s voice, committing the words to memory as best he could, even though he was certain that, to the outside observer, he wasn’t paying the first bit of attention. He adjusted the focus on his camera, honing in on the words carved in the beam in front of him: Al + Bobby. There was a heart carved around them. The wood had clearly been refinished since they were carved, but the edges of the wood were surprisingly unworn. They could have been put there yesterday, rather than almost a hundred years ago by a pair of men who were undoubtedly dead by now.
“The police raided the place in 1927,” the building’s current owner, a man named Tim Bradley, explained. “It was bought again two years later by a company that used it as a furniture warehouse. It’s traded hands a number of times since then.” He waited for the snap of Peter’s camera, then walked over and ran his fingers over the carving. “Various owners tried to get rid of the graffiti. They had it filled and painted over. Finally, probably around the fifties, someone just drywalled over it.”
Peter snapped three more pictures while Tim was talking. He knew it hadn’t been the other man’s intention, but if the words themselves had been poignant, the sight of his fingers running reverently over them was even more so. “The whole building?” he pulled away from the camera and looked around him. Tim’s redecorating had done nothing to disguise the fact the place had been built as a warehouse: it was huge, with high ceilings, and no windows. Peter couldn’t imagine the cost and difficulty of putting sheet rock over everything.
“Not all of it. They only went about half way up, just enough to cover the graffiti. We found the original wood when we got the go ahead to pull the asbestos sheets off.”
“They still had asbestos in them?” This just got better and better. “The previous owners hadn’t dealt with that?”
Tim shrugged. “No reason to. It was already up and painted, so there was less health risk just leaving it than there was pulling it out. Besides, this place had been pretty much abandoned since the late eighties when I bought it. There have been several movements to pull it down, but it’s such a landmark the locals wouldn’t hear of it. A few other people have proposed buying it and putting it to use again, but it’s always fallen through.” He smiled and looked up toward the ceiling, which now boasted lights and fans, some of the only signs of modernization. “It just seemed right, you know, to honour it’s history and turn it back into a club.”
Peter looked back at the names carved into the wood. “You said that the carvings had all been filled and painted over. Did you restore them on purpose, then?”
“Yeah. Took plenty of time and effort, let me tell you, but it seemed the best way to recognize the men who were here before us…and give a big, postmortem fuck you to the cops who arrested them.”

Well this is different
I decided to become deranged and try to restore this mid-century modern floor lamp [Note from future me: I had started writing this post while I was still working on this lamp and have now returned to finish the post since the lamp is finished. I can say for fucking certain that I wasn’t deranged before I started working on the lamp, BECAUSE I’VE BECOME DERANGED NOW FROM THIS HELL PROJECT]
We’ve had this lamp in our basement for as long as I can remember. My mom seemed to be quite fond of it and I think she meant to get it restored (or restore it herself) at some point but never got around to it. And now it’s kind of on me to figure out what to do with it.
Not gonna lie, even when ignoring all the damage and grime on this lamp, I think it’s just really ugly, not my style at all, like even if I painted it all black it still wouldn’t fit my aesthetic at all. So I don’t want it. But it was precious to my mom, and it is a borderline antique at this point, so I don’t have it in me to just throw it away. And, considdering the condition its in, I don’t think anybody would be interested in buying it either. Which leaves me with the options of shoving it in the back of our basement and pretending it doesn’t exist, or trying to tidy it up so it’s at least a little less nasty and maybe usable again.
(Yeah usually when I refinish a piece of furniture I do tend to try to make it fit into my style but with this thing there’s no way I can make it work man, so I’m going to try to genuinely restore it to its former glory, in its original style. “Try” being the keyword here. But yeah, keeping the original color palette I think it had)
Now there’s three main issues with this lamp.
1) The paint job is in bad condition
Tumblr media
It’s began chipping in multiple places, which alone would be bad enough, but on top of that, since my mom used to smoke all day in the basement, the lamp is covered in decades worth of tobacco soot. So while the metal frame was meant to be white (I THINK), it’s turned yellow if not bright, dark orange in some places. It’s nasty, it needs to be repainted.
Tumblr media
2) The fabric is also nasty
Tumblr media
There’s two main layers of fabric on the lamp, the inner core which is green, and the outer layer which was probably meant to be white but, much like the paint, has turned a hideous yellow. It’s nasty. And I’m pretty sure it’s ripped in many places too. It needs to go
Now because the lamp is so nasty (from not just tobacco but also spider webs) I refuse to touch it until it’s been cleaned properly, but the fabric on the lamp seems to be made of some kind of plastic-y material... Which I might switch out for some natural fiber once I get to that point.
Also as you can see, the fabric that covers the lamp is actually this kind of ribbon-y material that’s been wrapped around the frame to create all these folds and layers. It’ll definitely be interesting to replace that
But then, there’s The Big Issue with this lamp
3) The Electrical Parts
Tumblr media
This lamp is legit so fucking old that I don’t think anybody even makes lightbulbs that would fit into this lamp socket anymore. I have never seen a socket like that before (or a lightbulb like the one that had been left in it (which I removed but never took a photo of, sorry)). So on top of probably being a fire hazard due to its sheer age, the light isn’t even actually usable in its current state.
The thing needs to be replaced entirely. And that’s the hard part. Because the socket for the lightbulb is held in the center of the metal frame by this very specific piece of what seems like brass, so the replacement needs to be able to fit that piece of brass on it so it can be held in place.
If I can’t find a replacement for that (either a custom one, or by going to an electrician to beg for help, ‘cause lord knows I don’t know a god damn thing about this shit), then I can’t fix up this lamp, and there will be no point in refinishing it really. It’d just be a waste of space.
Tumblr media
In anycase, I removed the old socket and all, the socket was held in place with three screws+bolts that were easy enough to remove, while the cord was being held in place by two zip ties. It took me like twenty fucking minutes to saw through those zip ties with a knife and I hated every second of it, but I managed to loosen the cord to remove it.
(The cord had been just wrapped around the bottom of the metal frame for easier storage, nothing fancy) (Also the light switch on the cord is obnoxiously low, like god this lamp wouldn’t even be easy to use) (The switch does have the word “Wechselstrom” on it, which is German for “alternating current”. I can’t tell if it’s the name of a company or if its just another way to say “light switch” in German)
With the cord etc removed I was able to go to a specialist and asked if I could get it replaced while keeping a piece from the lamp to help ensure I could fasten the light in the right place-- And I was told the thing COULD be replaced! More on that further down on the post, but now this project was now truly ON! Starting with...
Tumblr media
Removing the old ribbon!
More specifically, trying to remove it all without ripping or cutting it. Like obviously just cutting it right in the middle would’ve been a WAY faster way to remove this nasty old thing from the frame, but I figured it’d be easier for me to measure how much ribbon I would need to replace the old if it was all still in one piece, so I took the slow meathod instead. And by “slow” I do mean it took me multiple hours to remove it
Tumblr media
But doing it the slow way was useful, since I got to take a really close look at how the ribbon was put on; it had been kind of threaded on there in this figure 8 shape which I hadn’t even noticed until I started taking it off
Tumblr media
I also got to see how the ribbon had been attached onto the frame; it was just taped down with badly yellowed, formerly clear tape (the other end of the ribbon was kind of vowen inside but I didn’t really take photos of that)
Tumblr media
And I really got to “appreciate” how absolutely fucking filthy this lamp was. The ribbon had been kind of wowen on top of itself, which meant that while half the ribbon was exposed, the other half was always covered and didn’t get to yellow as badly over time. So yeah. That color difference. Absolutely fucking horrifying
BUT IT GETS WORSE
‘CAUSE IT TURNS OUT
THE GREEN RIBBON WASN’T GREEN AT ALL
Tumblr media
IT WAS BLUE
BRIGHT FUCKEN BLUE
Don’t smoke kids
(Seriously, don’t smoke. You see what nicotine did to this lamp? Don’t put that into your lungs)
Tumblr media
But, after many hours, I managed to remove all the old ribbon, leaving the frame all nakey. In total there was about 63 meters worth of white ribbon on the lamp and about 43 meters of “““blue”““ ribbon
Tumblr media
With the frame explosed I also got to really “appreciate” how dirty the frame was too. It also works as a great reference/reminder as to where the new ribbon will go when the time comes to apply it. Also yeah the metal frame is quite wonky actually, it kind of makes me wonder if the lamp could’ve been something my grandpa built... No way to know at this point
With the old ribbon removed, it was time to start removing the old paint. Now I would’ve been open to just scraping and sanding the frame under normal circumstances, but between unknown old paint (was it lead paint? Asbestos paint? Who the fuck knows, regardless, I don’t want to risk breathing in either in dust form) and the bizarre, complicated shape of the lamp, I thought it would be smarter to just get some paint stripper and use that to clean the lamp. I believed it would be the easiest, safest way to go.
I was an optimistic fool.
You see, I am a sensitive little shit.
And the paint stripper they sold me at the paint store was some of the most vile fucking shit I’ve ever had to deal with.
Like, using the stripper was simple enough, apply goop to lamp, plastic wrap it, let it Do Its Thing for a while, come back and remove the goop that has eaten into the paint, rinse and repeat until the lamp is clean. But the fucking smell...
Like, the paint stripper on its own was this green slime, but the fucking smell. I can not even describe how it smelled, like... Just imagine the grosses goo/slime smell, and then make it worse.
Now, while working on the lamp, it wasn’t too bad, like it was really gross, but I could handle it. But after I finished working for the day, and went to take a nice shower-- I could TASTE the paint stripper. Like an after taste, that would not go away.
And so I vomited while showering.
And I was sick for the rest of the day.
Now the paint stripper wasn’t actually like toxic or anything and I hadn’t gotten it on me, I’m just a sensitive little baby, was severely grossed the fuck out by the paint stripper, and vomiting gave me heartburn which caused me severe nausea for the night. It fucking sucked, but it was a Me Problem.
STILL, IT FUCKING SUCKED
My silver lining was that I didn’t have a similar reaction after the second treatment on the lamp, but yeah
Tumblr media
After the first round vs after the second round with the paint stripper
I didn’t get all of the old paint off, but I did get enough, and I just didn’t want to do another round with it so I had to call it good enough
With the old paint removed, it was time to give the lamp a new paint job. I wanted to keep the lamp looking mostly the same, so I did choose to just paint it a slightly warm-ish white instead of pure, cold white, I thought that’d suit the lamp better, but before actually painting it, I had to prime it. The frame is made of metal and I didn’t want to cause it to rust etc, so anti-rust primer it was. And once the primer was done, I painted it.
Tumblr media
I can not put into words how frustrating and long priming and painting the lamp actually took. Like. I could not get a smooth paint job on the lamp for the life of me. I tried painting it in small areas with thin layers, I tried painting the whole thing one go, I tried thicker layers, the paint always just wanted to droop down into these really gross, uneven bumps. And yes, I tried sanding it, but sanding always caused the paint and primer to just come the fuck off entirely.
I genuinely spent a few fucking weeks just desperately trying to get the paint job to look nice. And I couldn’t. I did eventually just give up and call it good enough, but yeah, if you look at the frame closely, it looks like ass
Tumblr media
(In my defense, some of the bumps are from the metal frame itself and not from the paint job)
WHILE I was painting the lamp I did get the electrical part of the lamp replaced.
THAT WASN’T A STRAIGHT FORWARD THING EITHER.
Tumblr media
I took the lamp to a specialist, asked him if the could replace the cord and the thing where the light-bulb actually goes while keeping this triangle metal piece that’s the only thing that connects the light to the frame. He told me he could do that, so I left it there for him to Do The Thing.
A few days later I got a text that the lamp was ready, I went, picked it up, and returned home.
A week later I actually looked at the thing, and realized; had had only replaced the cord.
Tumblr media
I hadn’t communicated what I had wanted properly. And I realized my mistake ages later.
So I had to take thing BACK and ask him to replace the thing where the bulb goes too.
The thing is-- okay so I had genuinely thought the light bulb socket thing-whatever it’s called-- I had thought that was just ANCIENT and something people don’t make anymore, but appearently it’s not, it’s commonly used for cars (I was told) and while they do make lightbulbs like these... (this is the old, original one I still had)
Tumblr media
...they’re just not something you can find at the grocery store. Like you have to order them from specialists, basically. And because of that, the guy at the store hadn’t replaced the socket thing (he said he forgot to check if I had any extra lightbulbs to use when I came to get the thing)--
But yeah, I asked him if he could replace it with a more common type etc etc
BTW, amusingly enough, with the new cord I was able to test out the lamp kinda, and miraculously
Tumblr media
The old lightbulb still worked
Like, I didn’t expect that, but it did still work
But it was ancient and I didn’t want to risk it exploding or anything so yeah
A week or so later I went back and got the lamp, again, and now it was perfect
Tumblr media
This I can get new lightbulbs for really easily, and it works perfectly
Tumblr media
With the electrical part renewed and the frame painted, I was able put the electrical part back onto the frame! And yeah you can see the original paint job still on the old screws and the triangle part-- IDK I think it’s charming and also I could not be bothered to try and remove any of that shit
And then it was time for the finale of the lamp refinishing; The Ribbon
This was supposed to be so easy... Just buy new ribbon and be done with it... But no... It wasn’t easy... It was a waste of money...
Okay. I went to some local fabric stores in town, looking for ribbon(s) I could use on the lamp. I had measured how much I would need in theory, and got HALF the amount I would need (based on how much there had been originally). So I got like 70€ worth of cotton ribbon for the lamp. Brought it home.
And I realized it was too fucking thick
No light would actually come through the ribbon, which meant that the lamp couldn’t even be used as a fucking lamp, because it couldn’t emit any fucking light
Tumblr media
So after I had lost my shit, knowing I wouldn’t be able to return the ribbon, I went back to the store, and bought some fucking fabric to make my own custom fucking ribbon
Tumblr media
This shit was thinner and kinda translucent, so I hoped THAT would let some light through
Making the ribbon was so fucking hard. I didn’t take any photos of my process because it was tedious and not that interesting, but let me fucking tell you, it took me about OVER 36 HOURS. To make the RIBBON for the lamp.
And you wanna hear the real kicker?
I couldn’t even use all of the ribbon I made.
YOU FUCKING SEE
While the fabric was see-through enough to let through light while it was a SINGLE layer, by the time it was a two-layer ribbon, layered on top of itself (like it had been originally), it would let NO FUCKING LIGHT THROUGH
Tumblr media
The only light turned on in both of these photos is the lamp. The left has no flash turned on, the right does.
Can you fucking see how little light was coming through that?
So. I had to make the decision. I wouldn’t put as much ribbon on the lamp as there had been originally. It would be much sparser, so the lamp could be used as a lamp.
Now my one comfort here was that by this point, I had only made the black ribbon, I hadn’t started on the white ribbon- so while I had wasted 12 hours making two times as much black ribbon as I ended up using, I was able to predict more accurately how much white ribbon I would need and didn’t waste time making too much of that.
That said, I had bought twice as much white fabric for the white ribbon, so now I’m stuck not just with a fuck ton of ribbon, I also have white fabric that I have no idea what to do with
Also. I’m not going to show how bad the ribbon actually looks, because it’s embarassing. But I will admit, the ribbon is wonky as fuck, and it looks like shit. It is wobbly as fuck. And the white fabric was somehow, for some fucking reason, pinching up together constantly while I was trying to sew it.
But it’s done. It’s fucking done.
Tumblr media
This lamp looks like fucking shit, it cost me an absurd amount of money to refinish, and it’s only usable for mood lighting.
I have wasted my life.
Good night

A brief appreciation post for this stately lad before they’re off again; this is my 1975 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II. It’s a right-hand drive import from England and has been living the bulk of its life here in the USA.
The car was brought over in 1986 and had considerable refinishing and refurbishment work done at approximately 42,000 miles, including refinishing on the paint, undercarriage, engine/transmission/brakes/suspension, trim, and other major areas.
It has seen at least a couple mechanical overhauls in the past few years, but with much of its life being spent sitting in a collection, it’s feeling the ill effects of deterioration.
It recently began emitting blue smoke - a telltale sign of oil seeping into the combustion chambers and burning off while running and driving. The carburetors are well-tuned and jetted appropriately, it starts nearly immediately on cold cranks, and it runs smoothly and confidently, but it’s very possible valve seals may have started to go, resulting in this oil burn.
Though the oil level on the dipstick remains steady, the oil burn on cold start was enough to smoke out a garage and driveway when the temperature dropped to 14°C, and only really cleared up after reaching operating temperature 20-30 minutes later - not a good sign. There is a slight rap in the engine after multiple runs with a burn at startup, so there is definitely cause for worry where oiling and lubrication are concerned.
The primary braking circuit - a complex hydraulic/mineral oil dual-circuit system from Citroën - appears to be in some state of slow failure. The braking reservoirs share an additional circuit with the self-leveling suspension (as was common in Citroën luxury cars of the era), and we’re attempting to trace the root cause of the failure to determine if brakes or suspension are the culprit.
Typically, the suspensions aren’t the biggest concern. More often, it’s the dual-circuit brakes that require fairly constant maintenance. And, after running the brake pressure and accumulator test, there is a definite possibility that the system will need an overhaul in the coming couple years. The good news is that there have been recent maintenance indicators of the accumulators being replaced and/or serviced in the past year, so this may be down to hoses and lines and seals.
For Rolls-Royce to take care of maintenance like this, it would not be unreasonable to expect ~$6,900 on brake services, and perhaps and additional ~$8,500 on engine work and labor, so it’s definitely not an easy feat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beyond those hiccups, however, it’s a nicely sorted example, with all of the major components still being in a fully functional state. It has a lovely record of all history and maintenance tracing back to its original owner, and has been beautifully preserved as part of a collection of 75+ cars for some time. This sat alongside multiple Rolls, Bentley, Jaguar, Packard, Cord, Alfa, and other stunning vehicles.
The unfortunate reality is that these cars - as counterintuitive as it may seem - absolutely beg to be driven. They really do their absolute best when they’re soaking up the roads and racking up the miles. A well-sorted Rolls-Royce or Bentley from this time with well over 100,000 or 200,000 miles may very well be a smarter buy than lower mileage examples like these, that have only done an average of 1,500 to 1,700 miles/yr over the last 49 years.
But, for everything they’re worth, they are absolutely brilliant to drive, incredible to experience, and lovely to live with. They’re safer than most classics, and they’re operationally very similar to many modern cars, with plenty of amenities from then that are universal now. Of course, they still ride better than most other cars on the road, and they do an excellent job of isolating occupants from the outside, so there are still certainly some perks to driving these aging beasts.
Tumblr media
I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there really is an allure to retro, vintage, and antique automotive design, especially with a vehicle like this. Though it’s 6 3/4L V8 may only make 189 HP, this vehicle surges with the force of an unladen ocean liner, wafting down the road with authority and poise, and striking an imposing image in the rear view of all passerby.
There is a mystique to these carriages of the gentry from bygone eras of wealth and opulence long forgotten, and there is this indelible sense of occasion when behind the wheel or while being driven.
While this yacht of sorts really does have its acquired tastes, I hope you can appreciate its preservation and charm as much as I do! Take care!

Why There Is A Different Between Traditional Vs. Modern Bathroom Cabinet Styles?
In a traditional bathroom cabinet setting, ornate pulls and knobs with intricate details can elevate the overall look. On the other hand, modern bathrooms thrive with simple, minimalist cabinet hardware boasting clean lines.
Tips for selecting cabinet hardware for making bathroom beautiful
Match the finish with other fixtures
Consider your cabinet type
Experiment with unique cabinet styles
Balance aesthetics and functionality
Stick to your budget
Match the finish with other fixtures
Consistency is key in bathroom refinishing California. Ensure a cohesive look by matching the hardware finish with other fixtures in the space. If your faucets and showerheads are in chrome, opt for chrome cabinet hardware. Similarly, if you've chosen brushed nickel for lighting fixtures, complement it with cabinet hardware of the same finish.
Tumblr media
Consider your cabinet type
Cabinets vary in type, and your hardware choice should consider this. For frameless cabinets, edge pulls or integrated handles can offer a sleek appearance. Personalized cabinets painting California enhances both functionality and aesthetics.
Experiment with unique cabinet styles
Incorporate glass knobs for an elegant touch, leather-wrapped pulls for a rustic feel, or antique hardware to add character to your cabinets. Choose hardware from Delta Custom Finishes that not only looks great but also stands the test of daily use.
Balance aesthetics and functionality
While aesthetics play a significant role, don't overlook functionality when you are going to bathroom refinishing California. Bathroom cabinet hardware should be easy to grasp and use, especially for family members of all ages. Consider the size and ergonomics of the hardware; while oversized, decorative knobs may look stunning, they might not be practical for daily use.
Stick to your budget
While quality is essential, stay within your budgetary constraints. Prioritize spending on frequently used cabinets when going for personalized cabinets painting California. Experiment with placing knobs on the top corners of cabinet doors for a modern twist.

I have never seen a house like this 1888 Victorian in Knoxville, Tennessee. The home has untouched wood- full of patina. Instead of refinishing all the original features, they let it age, full of scuffs and bumps. ($485k)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The exterior of the petite Queen Anne Victorian is beautifully detailed and has a wonderful porch.
Tumblr media
It’s been well cared for, has all the beautiful stained glass, but it also has all the dings of everyday use since 1888.

I love patina, but I would at least want to polish and protect it.

What a cozy sitting room, and you can be sure that the fireplace is original and has no new wood stove installed.

This is so nice.

They left the original fireplace, though.

5 Kinds of Tubs That Qualify for Refinishing
1.   Tub with Cracks
One of the most common reasons people opt for tub refinishing Philadelphia is the presence of cracks. Cracks can compromise the aesthetic appeal of your tub, leading to more significant issues over time if left unaddressed. Even tiny cracks have the potential to continue spreading over years of use until they turn into large, unsightly gashes. As cracks expand, they allow water penetration under the surface, causing potential loosening of attachments to the floor below.
2.   An Old Tub
Age can take a toll on any fixture, and bathtubs are no exception. After years of regular use, signs of wear like staining and scratches accumulate, making tubs appear lifeless and neglected. If you have an old tub that has seen better days, refinishing can breathe new life into it.
The result of refinishing is a bathroom centerpiece that looks freshly installed. Former dullness and scratches become erased to be replaced by a uniform high gloss that projects cleanliness.
3.   Tub with Chips
Chipped enamel or porcelain can make your bathtub appear unsightly and neglected. Rather than ignoring these chips or resorting to temporary fixes, refinishing provides a long-lasting solution. If ignored, additional erosion will lead chips to expand into larger missing chunks, plus cracks radiating outward over time.
Refinishing remedies chips by first widening into an inverted V shape to increase the filler contact area. Debris then gets thoroughly cleaned before applying layers of acrylic-epoxy blend formulated to cure durable even in wet settings. The process addresses the chipped areas and creates a smooth, even surface.
4.   A Dingy Tub
Sometimes, the issue with your tub isn't physical damage but rather an outdated color or style that clashes with your updated bathroom decor. Tubs with factory-issued white coloring appear dull and yellowed over years of bathing. Fiberglass and acrylic may also develop darkening or inconsistent spots, contributing to a dingy, dirty vibe. While wholly functional, these types of tubs make bathrooms feel stale.
5.   An Outdated Tub
If you have an older cast iron or porcelain clawfoot tub or another vintage style but want the functionality, refinishing perfectly blends old and new. Start by restoring any rust or crack damage to get the tub solidly functional again. Tailor the color coating choice to either vintage white or a historically accurate shade. Then, enhance it by adding custom amenities like an integrated wine glass holder shelf, a built-in storage nook, or embedded Bluetooth speakers to play music.
Blending classic tub styling with handy features you'd expect in modern tubs creates a bridge to the past. It allows retaining beloved old tubs in a fresh, relevant way.
Bottom Line
Before you consider replacing your bathtub, explore the option of tub refinishing. Refinishing transforms bathrooms by giving your tub the attention it deserves. For years, you can enjoy the benefits of a refreshed and rejuvenated bathing space.
