Here we have an early example of Janeway being super emotional. It can probably be chalked up to Mulgrew falling back on her dramatic instincts. Another example I can think of off the top of my head is her reaction to the betrayal of Seska, another sort of paradigm-shifting moment for her.

But I use it to headcanon that this is the moment for Janeway that everything just kinda hits her. Just sort of a quiet realization of the fact that they are truly alone. There is no one she can bring this to, no higher counsel to seek, no judicial system, no backup. As the years go on this will become second nature, but right now it’s rough.

We really don’t see that much introspection of Janeway. The audience needs to see her almost like the crew would see her. She’s got it together, she’s gonna get them all through this. We don’t see a lot of her alone in her quarters just sort of overwhelmed by the responsibility of it all. But early on there’s a couple of moments like this one where it all crashes in and she loses composure for a minute.

it wasn’t technically his fault, though bastian had still felt like he was to blame for the whole encounter. who would have known that when the batter hit the foul ball that it would have gone so wild? the hit had sent the ball wildly foul near the stand, and bas hadn’t ever been one to not try for the out. so he went running to the edge of the field as far as he could. he’d managed to catch the ball, though in the process his glove had also knocked against a plate of nachos, sending it onto the lap of the person sitting there. of course he had given them a quick sorry, though he was more impressed that he’d caught the ball in the first place. the inning had wrapped up not much longer and they were in the seventh inning stretch, giving the male time to find a stray ball, writing a more formal apology on it before running back to the where the incident had taken place - handing it over to the attractive individual with a smile before he was being called back to join the team.
