Will.of.Oz (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
For the third offering in their Unexpected Musicals series, the PattyCake guys got even more ambitious. Combining the club jams of the Black Eyed Peas with the spectacle of The Wizard of Oz required a bigger cast and more locations than their first two videos. Not to mention all the costumes, props, set pieces, and visual effects. But they pulled all of it off with their own unique flair.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals – Will.of.Oz
performers: Rachel Copeland (Dorothy); Alexander Browne (Scarecrow / coronor / Winkie guard); E. Michael Evans (Tin Man); Earl Elkins, Jr. (Cowardly Lion); Olivia Adkins (Glinda); Kathy Castellucci (Wicked Witch); Fletcher Wakim (Toto); Eli Jacobson (Lollipop Guild); Annesley Kolb, Kelsey Kolb, & Lilly Kolb (Lullaby League); Charlie Crook, Blanca Rosero, Savannah Simerly, Annabel Rosario, Danielle Peronto, Fred Ramos, Nick Perez, Britt Nicole, Richard Bianco, Polly Pocket, & Jonathan Shane Ferrell (munchkins)
original songs / performers: [0:20] "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas; [1:46] "Don't Phunk with My Heart" by the Black Eyed Peas; [2:10] "Don't Lie" by the Black Eyed Peas; [2:40] "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas; [3:10] "Boom Boom Pow" by the Black Eyed Peas; [3:28] "Scream and Shout" by will.i.am, featuring Britney Spears; [3:54] "The Time (I've Had the Time of My Life)" by the Black Eyed Peas
written by: all songs by William "will.i.am" Adams in collaboration — "Let's Get It Started" with Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda, Jaime "Taboo" Gomez, Terence Yoshiaki, Michael Fratantuno, & George Pajon, Jr.; "Don't Phunk with My Heart" with Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, Priese "Printz" Board, George Pajon, Jr., Full Force, Kalyanji–Anandji, & Shyamalal Babu "Indeevar" Rai; "Don't Lie" with Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, Jaime "Taboo" Gomez, Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda, Chris Peters, Drew Peters, & Richard "Slick Rick" Walters; "I Gotta Feeling" with Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda, Jaime "Taboo" Gomez, & Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, David Guetta, & Frédéric Riesterer; "Boom Boom Pow" with Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda, Jaime "Taboo" Gomez, & Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson; "Scream and Shout" with Jean Baptiste Kouame, Tula "Tulisa" Contostavlos, & Jef Martens; "The Time (I've Had the Time of My Life)" by John DeNicola, Donald Markowitz, & Franke Previte
arranged by: Tony Wakim & Layne Stein
release date: 5 December 2016
My favorite bits:
the munchkins' various entertaining entrances
Eli recreating the Lollipop Guild's expressions and herky-jerky dance moves
the Scarecrow saying ♫ "lose control of body and soul" ♫ as he's gangling about
the "Ding Dong" instrumental melody playing underneath Dorothy and the Scarecrow's exit
and "If I Only Had…" under the Tin Man's introduction
including the iconic "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" as a counterpoint to "Don't Phunk With My Heart"
Earl's fantastic lion growl and melodramatic wailing (and poor little Fletcher getting confused by it)
the lovely harmonized ♫ "no no no no" ♫ section in "Don't Lie"
the bombast of "Boom Boom Pow" being delivered by the illusory visage of Oz the Great and Powerful
Kathy's pitch-perfect Margaret Hamilton witch cackle
the layered melodies in the coda section
all those incredible costumes (Tony was busy!)

Trivia:
According to PattyCake's Instagram teasers, it took 68 yards of fabric to make Glinda's voluminous gown, 2500 hand-stiched sequins to cover each pair of ruby slippers, and 57 pounds of actual tin to make the Tin Man's armor.
The Lullabye League is portrayed by Layne's step-daughters.
Jonathan Shane Ferrell isn't just one of the munchins. He's also one of the artists from Makeup & Creative Arts who provided the incredible character prosthetics.
PattyCake released their first public blooper reel for this project, and it is very fun.
youtube
The team at Makeup & Creative Arts released a time lapse prosthetics demo video for their Oz collection a couple years later with Dan Varnum donning the Lion's mane, Kathy Castellucci reprising her Wicked Witch role, Geoff Castellucci going gray silver as the Tin Man, & Paul Kaleka getting stuffed into the Scarecrow's burlap.
youtube
Rachel slipped back into Dorothy's gingham dress the following year to play Judy Garland in PattyCake's "La La Land" video.
Tony had performed "Let's Get It Started" many, many times during his decade as Dracula in the "Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue" at Universal Studios.
"Let's Get It Started" was also part of the opening medley for VoicePlay's second episode of The Sing-Off, though not the section the guys were featured in.
Layne had previously created a remix of "I Gotta Feeling" back in 2010 through his studio, Rayne's Room.

I've been following u for several years and I just noticed that ur icon is not Crowley from Supernatural.
Anon, finally someone with observational skills on the same level as me. LOL. That's so funny, I can TOTALLY see where your brain would autofill Crowley and I RESPECT you. (And not a bad choice either, from the Supernatural days.) It's actually Richard Harmon! When I was... 23? 24? like 6-ish years ago; He was supposed to be doing a convention locally. It fell apart from bad organizing, but I'm /extra/, and this had been a thing my friend and I had been looking forward to. SO. I end up making some calls, doing some sleuthing. I'm on the phone with his convention agent. We discuss the idea of a meetup for local fans instead, since he's already paid for his time. We vent about the event, we chat, She says a private meetup would be better. And that's the story how my friend Robin and I ended up meeting up with Richard Harmon in a coffee shop in Vancouver. He really enjoys photography too, and was down for "Candid" shots. He posed for a few, loool. He let me see all his character music he uses on his ipod.. He was a sarcastic bastard man (affectionate), and one of the kindest folks tbh. Sometimes I still see pictures of him in the beanie my best friend made to gift him that day. Fuckin' rad experience. Haven't changed my icon since!

Best San Francisco Architects

Unveiling the Best San Francisco Architects: Shaping a City's Skyline
San Francisco, a city renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse culture, and iconic landmarks, has long been a canvas for architectural innovation. From the majestic Golden Gate Bridge to the Victorian-era Painted Ladies, the city's architecture reflects a rich tapestry of history, innovation, and artistry. Behind every iconic building and innovative design are the brilliant minds of architects who have left an indelible mark on the city. In this article, we'll delve into the world of architecture in San Francisco and explore some of the best architects who have contributed to shaping the city's skyline and character.
Julia Morgan: Pioneering Architect of the Hearst Castle Julia Morgan was a trailblazing architect whose impact extended well beyond the boundaries of San Francisco. Born in San Francisco in 1872, she shattered gender norms in the field of architecture and became the first woman to graduate from the esteemed École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Morgan is most celebrated for her work on the Hearst Castle, a majestic estate nestled on the Californian coast. Her expertise in blending various architectural styles, from Mediterranean Revival to Gothic Revival, is evident in the grandeur of the castle. Beyond the Hearst Castle, Morgan designed numerous iconic buildings in San Francisco, such as the Fairmont Hotel, showcasing her versatility and impeccable design sensibilities.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Influence on San Francisco Frank Lloyd Wright, a name synonymous with architectural genius, contributed significantly to the architectural landscape of San Francisco. Although not a San Francisco native, his influence is undeniable. Wright's principles of organic architecture, emphasizing harmony between human habitation and the natural world, are reflected in many San Francisco homes. Notably, the V.C. Morris Gift Shop on Maiden Lane stands as an architectural gem, illustrating Wright's concept of "organic architecture." The design's fluid lines and integration with the environment make it a must-see for architecture enthusiasts.
The Innovative Legacy of Bernard Maybeck Bernard Maybeck, another influential figure in San Francisco architecture, was known for his innovative approach and love for the Arts and Crafts movement. His masterpiece, the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Berkeley, showcases his mastery in crafting spaces that harmonize with nature and incorporate distinctive, handcrafted details. Maybeck's work has left an indelible mark on San Francisco's architecture, inspiring future generations of architects to embrace both functionality and artistry in their designs.
Sustainable Design Champion: William McDonough In the 21st century, San Francisco has seen a surge in sustainable architecture, and William McDonough is at the forefront of this movement. His Cradle to Cradle philosophy emphasizes the importance of designing buildings and products with a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. McDonough's work, such as the San Francisco Federal Building, serves as a beacon for green architecture. The building is not just a government office but a living testament to how sustainable design can be integrated into urban landscapes.
An Icon of Modernism: Richard Neutra Richard Neutra was a visionary architect who introduced the principles of modernism to San Francisco. His designs, characterized by clean lines, open spaces, and an integration of indoor and outdoor elements, have been influential in shaping the city's modern architectural identity. The VDL Research House, though not in San Francisco, is a prime example of Neutra's iconic designs. His work in the Bay Area, like the Largent House, epitomizes the modernist movement's simplicity and elegance.
The Contemporary Vision of Stanley Saitowitz Stanley Saitowitz, a contemporary architect based in San Francisco, is known for his avant-garde designs that challenge conventional aesthetics. His work often involves the use of industrial materials, sharp angles, and minimalist concepts. The Yerba Buena Lofts in San Francisco, a sleek and innovative residential project, reflects his cutting-edge design approach. Saitowitz's ability to fuse functionality with artistic expression has made him a prominent figure in the city's architectural scene.
Renzo Piano and the California Academy of Sciences Renzo Piano, an internationally acclaimed architect, made a significant impact in San Francisco with the design of the California Academy of Sciences. The building, with its undulating green roof, is a prime example of sustainable design that harmonizes with its surroundings. Piano's innovative use of materials and his commitment to ecological responsibility have set a high standard for future architectural projects in the city.
San Francisco's architecture is a dynamic blend of historic landmarks, iconic structures, and cutting-edge designs. The architects who have worked in the city over the years have left an indelible mark, contributing to its ever-evolving skyline and cultural identity. From the timeless elegance of Julia Morgan to the sustainable innovations of William McDonough, the architectural diversity in San Francisco is a testament to the city's commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and embracing the rich history of architectural evolution.
As we reflect on the contributions of these architects, we're reminded that San Francisco's architectural journey is far from over. Emerging talents and visionaries continue to shape the city's skyline, each adding their unique chapter to the story of this vibrant and ever-changing metropolis. In the years to come, we can look forward to more iconic designs that will further solidify San Francisco's reputation as a hub of architectural excellence and innovation.

THE SHOWS GO ON
What's happening at the Guggenheim? The museum, housed in the most iconic modern building in New York City, can't seem to put together exhibits that make sense inside. It began with Countryside, The Future in 2021, a show that smothered the rotunda's interior with printed vinyl, sucking out all space and pleasure.
Now the museum is mounting two or more major exhibits simultaneously, perhaps for inclusivity. In the spring a potentially magnificent Nick Cave exhibit was squeezed into the Richard Meier-designed addition in back, broken over three small galleries on different floors, while an Alex Katz retrospective unspooled seamlessly in the rotudia. It was a pity because Cave's Soundsuits would have cut splendid figures on the ramp, while Katz's canvases would have looked just as elegant in the smaller galleries. The installation strategy did not serve art or politics well.
The rotunda currently features work from artists Gago and Mary Sze. Gago's sculptures assemble metal wire and hardware into complex suspended geometric nets. They're ethereal and monumental, intellectual and dreamy. Sze's multimedia installation, on the museum's highest level, combines painting, video and found objects to create a landscape of tenuous, elliptical happenings. Yet the works of both artists -- while distinctive -- do not occupy the rotunda well. Gago's are best seen in the round. They're flattened visually when pinned against a white wall, don't feel like much more than doodles. A historic photograph on display shows some of these same works installed in a small room, layered one over one other, evoking spatial harmonics that aren't perceptible here. Sze's installation is tied, physically, to the lower level and, perceptually, to its exterior, where images captured are broadcast inside the rotunda. But it's physically dispersed, sculpturally unobstrusive, and makes little impact in the space.
There is also a Picasso exhibit, centered around an early Paris canvas, in the lowest gallery in back. It's refreshing that the rotunda is given over to two female artists, one Latin American and one Asian, while Picasso is backgrounded. But what good does it do when that the rotunda doesn't serve these two artists well? The architecture of this building can devour artworks. The exhibit design needs to address it head-on.
