Rafal vs Rhian’s Flying

In Rise, Fall, and TLEA, there are clear differences between the way each twin flys, and I strongly believe that their flying is related to their souls.

First, I think the whole concept of adding flight to Rafal specifically, was that it was an extension of his soul. What I mean, is that when Rafal is flying, it’s his way of setting himself free a little bit, (as free as Rafal can get). Also, he’s cooler, calmer, and more controlled than Rhian is in the air.

Ex. “gliding over the moonlit bay and slipping through the window of the school master’s tower” and “rising into the air… like a bat stretching its wings.” And comparing that to Rafal’s and Rhian’s souls, “a frosty calm so different from Rhian’s hot, hungry gaze.” Even James says, “I have no control over your brother’s soul. It’s not like yours, which felt warm and welcome. Rhian’s scares me. It has a mind of its own.”

Now, theres not many examples of Rhian actually flying except for one specific scene in TLEA. A scene that I am OBSESSED with btw. I love absolutely everything about it. And while it is told in Sophie’s POV, it’s similar to how James describes Rhian’s soul in Fall. “She let herself go, gasping as Rafal slipped-turned like a hawk with dangerous speed…With a full somersault, he rocketed back up…Rafal shot across the bay like a fireball.” See how it’s different from the way the real Rafal flys in Rise/Fall? The words Soman uses are also not the same, as well as the tone and mood he creates with his wording. Rhian’s soul is very similar in the way that Sophie can never predict where or what Rhian is going to do next during his flight, Just like James Says! Rhian flies recklessly, hot, and fast. If I’m going to be honest, The Real Rafal would’ve NEVER taken Sophie for a joyride in the first place. Rafal is shown only using his abilities for specific purposes, like replacing Marialena. This is definitely something only Rhian would do.

Just finished Rise of SGE and I have many thoughts (NOT SPOILER FREE):

1. I FUCKING KNEW IT!! Rafal was always doing the good thing by forgiving Rhian and just trying to protect the balance. Rhian was the one who kept testing things and betraying everything they stood for in order to cheat and win.

2. HOOK PLAYING RHIAN AT THE END THERE lol. I like to see a loser lose 💃💃💃

3. I like Rafal in this. Not the Rafal in the OG books because that is actually Rhian.

4. Soman I think you should write some non-middle grade books because some of these things…how did his editor let that get published? When Vulcan and Rhian was fighting and Vulcan was on top of him like “u want a man that can put u in ur place.” And Hook was like “I’ve had your brother but I haven’t had you yet.” Also all the banana euphemisms (like the sword euphemisms in the OG books). I’m sure it wasn’t just my mind going there, because there was quite a lot of things that made me think “okayyyyyy that sounds a bit 🤨🤨”

5. All the call-backs (or call-forwards) to the OG books!!! Just seeing how certain traditions like the two castles, the Trial, the swan crest, and the Circus of Talents came to be… Rafal with the “it doesn’t matter what you are. It only matters what you do.”

6. Man. Books.

Why did I imagine that when the Mistral brothers are kids they’re still pretty powerful with magic

I imagine one day Rafal and Rhian are just sitting around and Rhian goes "Fala I'm boreddddd :<" and so Rafal magically conjures a sphere of light in his hands, Rhian's like "ooo what's it do" and Rafal says "it's a ball for us to play with of course, now catch!"

And so the boys play catch and also a game where they try to keep the ball in the air for as long as possible by firing various magic spells at it, this also changes the appearance of the ball because it's a magic light sphere so it basically absorbs the spells and changes colors based on which ones they use

At the end they're tuckered out and laughing on the floor happily

Fast forward years and years later when the brothers are now School Masters at the School for Good and Evil, a little trinket on one of the shelves in their room is a little magic orb that glows with multicolored light from inside.

Only the two brothers know about its history.

HI SGE

I was scrolling around on twitter, facebook, discord, and even the forum on wiki but never seemed to find any active people! And now I'm here there's suddenly a huge community I'm speechless! The happy kind of speechless 🫶✨️

I read the School for Good and Evil first time in 2018, and the series was so captivating it never left me. I never joined any fandom before so it just always kind of danced around in my mind for a few years.

What seriously made me fell in love, though, was the Rise and Fall series! All the plot twists and drama and easter eggs to the main series, I'm in love with everything!

So glad to see the SGE fandom still active somewhere! If anyone sees this post, I'd really love to get to know you all and share our thoughts and idea and love for the series!

Looking forward to meet lovely people in the fandom!

Btw I made this sketch of the infamous scene anyone who read Rise of the SGE would know - I die for it every day 😭🫶✨️ i sketched this a while ago when I was reading the book for the first time but never got to show it to anyone

I think he would be driven to seek out revenge of some kind if you did that, simply due to the fact that he's petty. Though, he might have the self-control to not murder you, if you didn't humiliate him in the process.

If we're thinking of Good Fall Rafal, he might just chastise you, but not resort to severe violence. And, psychological warfare is still fair game. It always is.

Unpopular, possibly controversial opinion: "Rafal" in the main series is slightly more alluring to me than Rafal in the prequels. Sure, you could call him creepy, but he had a certain power and mystique about him that was distinct from the original's.

Sadly, I don't feel the same about Rafal in TLEA. He's a lot more brooding and moody compared to his scenes in the other books.

Allow me to remind you how weird and unhinged this man is:

"Ah, but there's only one way in this world to prove who you are." The Storian stopped its busy writing, sensing a pivotal moment. Slowly the School Master turned. For the first time, his blue eyes had a glint of danger. "What's the one thing Evil can never have . . . and the one thing Good can never do without?"

Absolute fucking creeper. You can imagine the sound he makes as he slowly turns around, like a creaking door. Gives me chills. I love him.

Also, he's rather funny:

The Storian plunged to the page: "Stupid girls! They were trapped for eternity!" "I suspected as much," said the School Master.

These two could've been a comedy duo. Too bad the Storian sucks.

Maybe it's also the way I'm writing him in Ever Never After. Kinda makes me wish I didn't have plans for him to revert to his original appearance permanently. I mean, it's a real fix-it fic.
