Anyway, if I had a nickel for every time a series had six installments that gradually escalated in ridiculousness, only for the sixth installment to end with a universe reboot and the seventh installment to pick up in a new universe where alternate versions of the original characters now exist in the distant past, I'd have two nickels.
One of those series is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The other is Riverdale

The irony of riverdale haters is that they will describe the most incredible and hilarious plot to ever happen in television and be like "yeah it sucks so much i wish things where boring and predictable"

people's insistence on Maybe The Curtains Were Just Blue-ing riverdale is so fascinating because you will state the most basic, explicit, incredibly obvious themes of the show and they'll act like you've lost it. and it's like something they make so blatant in the show's text that you can't miss it but like ppl are convinced riverdale somehow cant have any themes at all so they refuse to believe this very obvious reading could possibly be the intention. you could say smthn as basic as "jughead exists both inside and outside the narrative and must forever write the story to keep everyone alive" and they'll be like "lol riverdale fans extrapolating things that aren't there" but it's something they literally actually say out loud in the jughead paradox. rvd fans literally just State What The Show Is About and we die like jesus on the cross for it. and suffer more meaningfully than jesus too

debate: did the barbie movie (2023) steal the joke about barbie being a fascist from riverdale season 2 episode 10 in which veronica calls cheryl a fascist barbie?

something this episode really drove home is how much this season is a love letter to art, especially subversive art. even when the art itself isn’t what we’d consider subversive even in the 50s context, it’s about loving art enough to fight for its existence. jughead’s comics code authority plotline is the most obvious example but it’s everywhere: uncle frank trying to stop archie writing his poems, betty’s books on sexuality being derided and confiscated, veronica being blocked out of the cinema industry, kevin not being allowed to put on his musical, kevin writing a song for that musical about being gay and then never putting it in, the need for the black athena to exist in the first place, the way cheryl and toni sneak their lesbian pulp novels around, cheryl’s art being destroyed, fangs’ music needing to be profitable for it - or even him - to have value, josie having to fund her movie entirely out of her own money. it’s everywhere once you start looking for it. and there’s also immense power in winning that fight: betty writing her own book and the effect that has on her relationship with her mother, pep comics dying with dignity, archie’s gay mom kicking uncle frank out so he can ride the rails and write poetry in peace, veronica’s cinema succeeding anyway. maybe the real archie’s weird fantasy was the friends we made along the way.

eddie started high school knowing about the harrington family; his uncle had a few choice words to say about how they treated those with fewer advantages and how they were best avoided.
as he went through high school, he started hearing about one specific member of the harrington family in particular, from overhearing gossip in the corridors and cafeteria, from the school newspaper.
walking around school, he saw a lot of steve harrington. saw another pretty boy thinking high school popularity was everything.
and while steve never pushed eddie around or called him slurs, his friends certainly did, as steve just watched.
he always stared at him, dared steve to do anything, to help, to hurt. to end the bullying in some way.
outside those confrontations, eddie was too busy to care about steve harrington. too busy trying to keep up his grades and dealing and running hellfire and practising with corroded coffin.
so he didn't care when steve started going out with nancy wheeler.
he didn't wonder if steve could ever look at him like that. he didn't wonder what it would be like to kiss him, or run his fingers through the famous hair.
pining over straight boys that stood around watching as he got beat up could never end happily.
eddie had been forced to be good at being realistic from an early age. maybe he could get the happy ending in dungeons and dragons, but not in high school.
and he had a lot else to focus on. retaking his senior year, finding new outcasts for hellfire, making sure that wayne didn't have to carry all the weight in providing for the two of them.
eddie had no time over to think about some pretty boy, not even when that pretty boy falls from grace.
not even when the pretty boy shows up with a beat-up face. not even when the pretty boy is the subject of all the gossip he overhears.
but then summer comes.
but then his friends bring him to the new mall.
but then he sees steve in a sailor getup that is as ridiculous as it is scandalous.
and eddie might be good at being realistic when he has to, but he has always been a dreamer.
and the steve working at scoops ahoy is not the steve that stood to the side in high school.
so eddie ditches his friends to get some ice cream.
(steve's pov)
