HI- HEY- HELLO- IVE BEEN- IN DRAWING MOOD- SO HERE HAVE A (finished) RONNY ANN DRAWING AND POSSIBLE ME STARTING TO WRITE AU BOUT IT :DDD
Tumblr media
Ronny Ann!
Welcome to the Neighborhood Rag Dolly: Ronny!
After mysteriously ending up in the bright they were…..absolutely terrified.
Where was Ms. Darlene? How’d they get here? AND WHY WERE THEY SO TALL-
Ontop of the many many questions, they brightly colored, vast (and far too loud) neighborhood friengthed them terribly, cutting off all contact with the new world, much the neighbors dismay.
Living high above in their treeehouse and watching the (lovely neighbors? People? Kidnappers? Puppets?) people below, they write stories on their type writer about home and lives of the colorful folk passing by.

A saga from the search side of things:
Sunday (the 25th) Tristan sent some links he found for MyHeritage, one of those ancestry record sites, but it took a subscription, or at least a free trial, to view. The previews confirmed the articles mentioned Mark Baker in the 1983 version of Raggedy Ann and Andy, so I was intrigued enough to sign up! I love cancelling free trials >:)
When I got to the pages, however, the actual images have me error messages, and I got were these shitty transcription attempts by the computer >:0 nevertheless I started a google doc and began copying them over to clean up later, along with their links.
Thing is, after I got the 1983 ones, I checked out his search results for Ivy Austin, which came up with even more. Then I switched it out for Raggedy Ann, and then Rag Dolly, going year by year (searching only newspapers within New York). SO now. I have 42 mentions. Most of with articles, a couple just short mentions in a ticket advertisement or full article about Russian relations.
:O 42
But aside from the shitty transcriptions, I KNEW some of these had pictures. You could TELL by the captions!!! And I was upset I couldn't find them!!! So with list of confirmed dates, headlines, and occasionally even page numbers in hand, I turned my attention to Google Newspapers. Now we've used them before, but they don't transcribe their stuff as often, so if you don't have specific dates to look for you're not going to find much. I began to dig, picking each issue and skimming through the pages (sometimes multiple issues for one article, if the date was wrong) until I came up with 23 of them! Not bad! Most importantly, I manged to find all the pictures, which included Ivy and Tricia in the bedboat from 1985, Snyder and friends throwing Gibson a surprise birthday party, and the iconic photo of Mark Baker and Ivy Austin as Andy & Ann! I spent seven hours at the library, this was the 27th.
So today. The 29th. I get back on to see if I can locate the three other articles I really wanted to find (some of the shorter mentions I didn't find worth the dig). And when I click on the MyHeritage link.
The pictures load.
THE PICTURES LOAD????? >:0
I would say "all those hours of work for nothing" but Ronnie reminds me that even if I can save higher quality photos now, at least we have links to the full spreads that aren't behind a paywall. So it takes me about an hour and now I have high quality pictures of all 42 mentions in my original list. And they're wonderful! And now we can clean up the transcriptions! And I really recommend reading them! And now I've got wiki pages to update! :D

although the script went through a ton of iterations, there are a few things that stayed the same through all of them. however, there are a couple of instances where lines were cut extremely early on that screwed up the original jokes, and they were never changed or fixed.
for example, these lines (here taken from the broadway boot accurate script) which are in every script without variation:
ANDY: What, take on that monster--
BABY: -- with the Wolf?
ANDY: -- and the candied apple?
a little awkward in pacing, no? usually these types of jokes are in threes, right?
well, in the earliest draft of the script that we have, it is in three:
ANDY: What, take on that monster--
CAMEL: -- with the meat-grinder?
BABY: -- with the Wolf?
ANDY: -- with the candied apple?
much better flow, right?
in this early draft, camel is with the group from the very start, rather than being picked up in the shipyard, so many of his original lines in the early scenes were either cut or given to other characters. in this case, it was cut, but it ended up messing with the joke.
the thing is, it could have been extremely easy to just replace camel's line with another character. i mean-- panda's right there. general d literally threatens him with a boiling pot! just have him say that! and then the flow of the joke isnt screwed up!
but no. that did not happen. they left it weird for the entire 2 years that they performed and worked on the show. apparently we cannot have nice things

Ronnie has reminded me that we should introduce the international performances of Rag Dolly!
To fully grasp how popular this show was in Russia after the tour, imagine Wizard of Oz or Beauty and the Beast and how often they're performed by local and children's productions in the US. That's how popular this show is, the script (unofficial and illegal) is easily available online for anyone who wants to perform it (in Russian at least).
These shows are an absolute treasure trove of creative design, original songs, and mediocre child acting. It's a lot of fun to scroll through, see how each show did this costume or that puppet. Though if you aren't familiar with the plot it can be hard to follow.
There are dozens of these just that we've been able to find online, mostly from Russia but even from the Ukraine and Belarus. The server has our favorites: Spinel Ann, clown Andy, Disco Diagnosis, but there's one in particular we all love:
Playlist in order - Super Pal Trio (General D has a gun and is not afraid to use it)
With original songs and a charming cast (especially the villains) it's definitely worth the video quality and the language barrier. It's very entertaining and yes, General D. has a gun.
