Mask

FFxivWrite2022 Day 27 Prompt Hail
Tumblr media
Aina strode though Radz’at’Han smiling as she wandered.  It was good to see the city as lively as it had been prior to all of the troubles.  Music danced upon the wind along with the cries of merchants hawking their wares.  People were wandering to and fro some overt natives of the island due to their brilliantly colored clothing, others visitors mostly easily identified by their baffled looks at the winding streets and large crowds.
“Oi Warrior,”
Aina paused and turned toward the voice giving a warm smile.  Inwardly she winced she hated how often people called her by her title not her name.  It was even more annoying because she recognized the man who called.  He was a merchant here in Radz’at’Han whom had traded with the Rosewood Caravan many times.  He knew both her and her mother and it wasn’t like Viera didn’t stand out in the crowd.
He was thanking her profusely for her aid during the Final Days.  She responded as she always did that she had done no more than necessary and she appreciated the gratitude.   Also knowing full well he did not know the full extent of what it had taken to save Etheirys from that.  He had only known what happened here in Radz’at’Han.
As he went on his way she continued on hers outwardly she was the calm and serene Warrior of Light.  Inwardly she was seething she knew it came from all she had done but she hated having the title.
The title, the mantle of the Warrior of Light, felt like a mask.  No different than the ones the Ancients had to wear to be considered acceptable in their society.  The Rava hated it, she wanted to be seen as herself not the famed hero but, unfortunately the hero was what most saw.  She rarely if ever could remove the mask for people had expectations of the Warrior and she didn’t want them to worry if they saw anything but those.
The irony of it all is she suspected it was the same back when Etheirys was whole, when she bore the seat of Azem and as such the title.  The Viera unconsciously pulled out the stone that was Azem’s and looked at it.  The first time she had invoked the magics within she had gotten vague impressions of memory.  Which as she had learned was the point of the stone it was to remind the Convocation members who they had been or at least what their seat had represented.  For her however she suspected it was a bit different.  Especially since unlike the others that Emet and the others had raised she had been per his actual statement seven times rejoined.
With that knowledge in mind she suspected that some of her memories as the ancient she had been were brought to the fore as was the information that dwelled within the stone.  So she suspected this dislike of being known by a title alone stemmed from back then.
She hadn’t realized where she had ended up walking to until the familiar roar filled her ears and she gave a rueful smile.  No matter what when she was troubled her feet always led her to this spot in Radz’at’Han.  It was a small spot just before the bridge that led to Meghaduta.  A pond fed by a cataract above that then flowed into a second set of falls that flowed down the edge of the city.
It was always a place of comfort for the Rava.  Back when she had been much younger she had found it during her first visit to the city.  The vibrant colors, the boisterous noise of the hustle and bustle of its inhabitants and the heady scents of incense and food had been too much for the young Viera’s sensitive senses and she had run from her ‘aunt’s’ side and found herself here which helped to calm the frightened child.
“I see this is still a place of calm for you,” an amused voice stated and Aina turned to see Vashan standing there with a gentle smile.
The Viera returned it with a genuine warm smile before asking, “That obvious hmm Vrtra?”
The facsimile of a boy before her shook his head, “No but you usually come here when your heart is troubled Aina, I have seen this many times if you recall even if you didn’t truly know it was well me.”
Aina gave a laugh relieved that the dragon called her by her name instead of a title as so many of his kindred seemed to do.  Then again she had known him, at least in this auri form since that fateful day when she had bolted to escape the bedlam of the city.
Sighing she sat down on the usual rock that she did and it wasn’t long before he joined her.  The Viera then began to tell him exactly what was wrong, the merchant calling her by her title, the memories that she seemed to have recovered and just vented about the burden.  It was funny ever since meeting him back then he had always been someone she never hesitated to speak to about anything.  He had been a friend and confidant and she was one of the few that had known his name was Vrtra for that was how he had introduced himself even though the simulacrum he was in went by a different name back then and now went by Vashan.
He listened through it all and nodded stating, “I apologize for his foolishness.  I believe many who knew you with the Caravan have forgotten who you were.  But ask yourself this my friend, is the Warrior and you so different that you are someone else?  For it seems not to me.”
Aina jerked in surprise then thought for a moment about his words and realized that he was right. The mask she perceived the Warrior of Light as was not really such, it was he,r a helpful person who didn’t often like to be praised for doing what she felt was needed.
Giving another laugh she turned and grabbed the Auri into a hug startling him and said, “Thank you Vrtra sometimes it takes a friend saying something for me to see what’s right in front of me”
He gave a chuckle then said, “Glad to be of help a suppose,”
She let him go and gave him a grin, “You know one of the really useful thing about this simulacrum?”
He cocked his head curious.
“Its incredibly easy to sweep into a hug, I think I would have significantly more trouble attempting to do something like that to your dragon form.”
He gave a laugh and she joined him in it before standing and giving him a bow and bid him farewell thanking him once more.

Top 101 Songs of 2022
2022 has been an exceptional year for new music and as always, I thought I would share with you my favourite songs of the last 12 months. Unlike my albums list, this one is unranked as this isn’t necessarily what I think are the best songs of the year, but more the songs that have ultimately come to soundtrack my 2022. Also, I find it impossible to favour songs over one another half the time – these are simply different tunes for different moods.
In this year’s playlist are plenty of lesser-known gems from some of my favourite new discoveries, the year’s best album cuts, my favourite collaborations, guilty pleasures and, of course, some of 2022’s biggest singles and club bangers. As always for the sake of diversity, I’ve kept it to strictly one song per artist (excluding a couple who are also included on other tracks as features).
Now I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is yes – as the official Sound of the Summer for 2022 here in the UK, Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush is included, despite the fact it was originally released in 1985. Also, the playlist is 101 songs this year rather than the standard 100, as a certain Miss Simz came along very late in the day and needed to be included. So this year you get a bonus track!

Me: Huh wow why is this hookerfic turning out so long and emotionally painful to write?
Also me: Let’s make a disabled character who has all the internalized ableism you don’t let yourself acknowledge or deal with!!!
Anyway. If you want to know why this hookerfic is turning out so long and emotionally painful to write, it’s because it’s full of long, mundane, not-porny-at-all scenes like the following, in which my OC meets the Lan brother he’s not even going to sleep with. At least not in this fic.
Taojiu knew he had made a mistake soon after arriving at the Cloud Recesses. The cart that brought him to the foot of the path rumbled away long before he’d climbed out of earshot. He’d been warned about the walk, of course, but he’d imagined this would be like a temple slightly removed from the roadside, or like a grand castle with a sweeping flight of steps. Now he saw his mistake: it was not enough for these virtuous people to preach about the narrow and arduous path to Enlightenment. They had to make it so painfully literal Taojiu was surprised the mountainside wasn’t dotted with small didactic placards.
It was easier to blame the Lans—and he did—than think about his real mistake, about how much he had learned to ignore his injuries—forgetting that the last few years of his life had trained him, like an animal on a tether, to walk the narrow limit of the things he could do before the pain stopped him. It was easier not to remember that, so as much as he permitted those thoughts to become conscious at all, he limited them to the directly relevant.
The problem with using a cane, as he already knew, was that it took work. To adequately support the leg, the arm and shoulder must take up some of its weight; and to provide that support, one must grasp the thing. In the city, he had eschewed the upright poles used by serious travellers, or the blind who needed to test the ground in front of them. He used a demure little cane with a bent rosewood handle, one he could easily hide behind the fall of his sleeve if he needed to appear elegant. Thus he did not grip the cane like one pulling a rope downwards, but placed his palm flat on it, then curled his fingers around.
His hands had been broken, once. He preferred not to think about it, but the practical considerations were: the bones in his hands had not been set with perfect precision, and they had damaged the abilities of some of his fingers to perform tasks or perceive pain. Generally, he rubbed a liniment on them at night, and he accommodated for his hand’s difficulty gripping his cane or directing it precisely by becoming a master of swinging it with the twitch of his fingers, and putting it down with precision. In the city, there were usually walls to put his hand against, or to catch him if he fell; the pavements and floors he encountered were rarely so uneven to present his feet with a consistent challenge.
Thus he had forgotten, from the days just after his injuries healed, that if he relied on his cane too much, the pressure ignited a small fire in the mutilated nerves of his palm. And if he switched it to his other hand, his first two fingers would not bend at all, and the ache of holding the handle with the lesser fingers forced the web of his thumb onto a little bump in the handle in a way that swiftly became excruciating. When he reached a slightly wider part of the path than usual, he happily stepped aside to make room for a group he could hear coming up behind him, and experiment with wrapping the tail of one sleeve around the handle in a way that would cushion his hand.
“Uncle,” someone said behind him. “Are you in difficulty?”
Oh. Wonderful. He had an audience.
At least he’d dressed like a respectable citizen today, with his face unpainted and his hair bound up and modestly covered. Taojiu turned and bowed to an illustrious personage even more gorgeously dressed than Lang Wangji had been, and trailed by six white-robed disciples who, at a quick glance, did not seem to recognize Taojiu. Embarrassingly, given that uncle, this man had the kind of carriage and gravity that suggested he was at least Taojiu’s age, if not older. There was nothing like being mistaken for decrepitude.
“Are you going all the way up to Cloud Recesses?” the illustrious personage asked. “We could provide assistance.” Which, indeed; there was something so mild and beneficent in his gaze that he seemed on the verge of doing something altogether saintly, like carrying Taojiu on his back to the top of the mountain.
“Ah, no thank you,” Taojiu said, as politely as he could manage. “I am going to visit a friend who is in hospital, but I see no need to bother anyone.”
“It is another two li up this path,” the man warned, which made Taojiu’s stomach sink. “We could bring a litter…”
“Zewu-Jun,” one of the disciples called out. “One of the merchants in the hospital came on a donkey. I could fetch it back down to carry this man up.” He looked at Taojiu with less heavenly beneficence, but no lack of practical kindness. “It was restless this morning because it has not been out.”
His master nodded to the disciple, and then said to Taojiu, “There is a bench a little futher up the path where you can wait.”
Taojiu didn’t respond for a moment, because with very little fuss the practical disciple had pulled out a sword, stepped on it, and flown away, as simply as if he’d been a house swallow. Apparently such a thing hadn’t lost its ability to delight and astonish him, despite everything. He turned back, a little softened, and said, “Zewu-Jun. It would be my honour.”
The padding of his sleeve, and the promise of relief, helped him walk a little more smoothly. The First Jade of Lan made matching his pace look easy, and the disciples trailed behind them. “Your friend,” Lan Xichen said. “Is it one of the people injured by the spirit roving in Gusu City last week?”
“Yes,” Taojiu said. “Su Mei. I was standing right next to her when it attacked. It gave me quite a fright! I’m grateful to the Second Young Master for seeing to it.”
“I didn’t catch your name either,” Lan Xichen said, looking down at him sidelong.
These pine trees created too rarified an atmosphere in which to uncork his professional name; it meant “peach wine”. He lied quickly, counterfeiting an old truth instead. “Wang Long, Your Excellency.”
With that same kind of powerfully thoughtful mildness, Lan Xichen said next, “I think you are not a native of Gusu, either.”
“Oh!” Taojiu cried out, as the bench appeared at the top of the path. “A didactic placard. I was wondering where those were.”

Not long after Gwen had returned from her foray into the Gilnean highlands, she found herself parked in a booth next to a window in the deserted pub, with a cup of hot coffee and the wooden box on the table before her: she’d cleaned off the mud with napkins, careful to dig every last bit out of the intricate designs that were carved into the stained rosewood. She paused with her fingers on the latch as her other hand lifted the cup and took a sip of coffee, her gaze never leaving the box.
A low rumble of thunder met her ears: outside, the sky had started to darken once more, as pewter clouds rolled in to quickly replace the previously bright, cheerful morning. She set the cup down and flicked the latch and opened the lid of the box, and a smile crept across her lips as she regarded its contents.
One by one, she lifted everything out and set it on the table: a necklace made of fishing line and chipped seashells; a length of green ribbon; a handful of flat rocks; a half-burned candle that still smelled of beeswax and cinnamon; a thick cloth-bound book stained with water and splotches of ink; a lopsided, hand-made doll with mismatched button eyes; a braided length of sungrass; a collection of birch twigs. Kind words and warm fires, late nights and whispered spells: each item brought along with it a surge of memory— a scent, a time, a place, a person. The two tiny birch twigs she’d picked up earlier were pulled from her hair and added to the pile.
A lump formed suddenly in her throat as she sat alone at the table, her past laid out before her. She touched her fingertips lightly to each object in turn, until finally she reached the weathered book. Outside, the sky had opened up: rain pattered rhythmically against the leaded glass windows of the pub as thunder rolled across the moor from the nearby sea. Inattentive to the growing storm outside, Gwen ran two fingers along the frayed cloth edge of the book’s cover, then flipped it open.
The pages inside were splashed in vibrant colour. Flowers and plants of every native Gilnean variety were pressed between the pages, preserved flat against the brittle paper: roses, heather, thistle, thread moss, Gilnean yew, bog myrtle, peacebloom, buttercup, and silverleaf. Each page with a different kind of plant, with each one neatly labelled in the halting, child-like script of her youth. Her lips curved into a wider smile as she traced her fingertips over the brittle, dried petals of a yellow buttercup bloom, though the smile faltered as she flipped to the next page.
The weathered paper was heavy with detail about nature spirits and the Old Ways, though it wasn’t the beginnings of her teachings as a Harvest-witch that gave her pause, but rather a piece of folded cardstock tucked snugly between the pages. Fingers twitching slightly as she reached for it, Gwen pulled the cardstock from the book and gazed down at it.
Waxy, multi-coloured scribbles covered the front of the card in a way that only made sense to the mind of a child: she held it close to her face and inhaled the scent of wax and the faintly vanilla-like smell that paper took on when it had been stuck in one place for a long time. Pausing only for the briefest moment, she flipped the card open and looked inside.
Dear mum,
Happy birthday! Thank-you for being my mum. When I grow up I want to be a Harvest-witch too. Dad and I are making you dinner tonight.
Love, Jacob
Then, below that:
Dictated but not read (because he can’t read yet). Don’t worry, I won’t let him near the stove. Love you, Sunshine. X Brennan
A tear splashed onto the paper, then another: she swiped them away and closed her eyes as she held the card tightly to her chest. Outside, more thunder— louder and closer than before— rolled across the moor as rain beat a relentless tattoo against the windows. Gwen kept her eyes shut tightly as she held onto the card, tears falling as she sat alone in the booth, awash in her memories.

“DETECTIVE REISI MUNAKATA”
Translation: Naru-kun Raws: Ridia
It has been six months since Reisi Munakata opened a detective office on Baker Street in England.
Originally, he was a bureaucrat who was invited to Japan by British Land as a foreign policy adviser. He was blessed with the opportunity to demonstrate his administrative skills in many cases, and became more memorable for the queen.
However, quick glory also creates a backlash.
In a couple of years, she was jealous of Munakata's success, and her powers warned she of his ability.
As a result, he lost his position and became a civilian again.
Mysteriously, Munakata, who has lost the advantage in a foreign country, has not taken the option to return to Japan or change jobs to a private company, and opened a detective agency independently on Baker Street, which is considered the city most insecure in British land.
Furthermore, he is a private detective who never has a high social status.
It was behavior that no one else could understand. It was the same for Fushimi Saruhiko, a native Japanese staff member.
"This is last week's report. It includes an expense bill, so pay early."
With a look that seemed uninteresting, he tossed a bunch of reports onto the mahogany table where Munakata sits. It is as thick as a small dictionary. Coquettish, but still fast and efficient at work.
Munakata reads it at superhuman speed.
"Hmm. Settlement of a case of a bar fight, investigation of bad children of aristocrats and deception of a young businessman. You did a lot of research in a short time."
"Thanks."
Saying that in a completely impassive tone, he turned to the side and bowed his head. Munakata, with a rebellious attitude, has a friendly smile before the talented subordinates who have been following him until now.
"Do you seem unsatisfied?"
When he asks that,
"I did not cross the sea to do such a thing."
Unexpectedly, Fushimi framed so honestly. Munakata,
"Hm."
He puts his hands on the table and puts his chin there.
"It is true that most of the projects we are dealing with today are popular, prose and uninteresting. But about one in a hundred is really good."
It doesn't melt anything.
“You find an exciting event. Don't you think?"
Fushimi calmed down for a while, then reluctantly refused. It was certainly exactly what Munakata said.
About once every hundred times, intelligent, esoteric, and motivating incidents can come to the office in any way. It was a scarlet incident that would have been made by a legendary detective who once lived on Baker Street.
"Isn't that something that should be called the magical power of the earth? I have the courage to open a detective agency here."
Munakata chews a lot of fun.
In fact, he successfully resolved the two strange incidents that he brought.
However, Fushimi cannot understand.
He does not believe that Munakata's purpose is for that purpose.
Only then.
"Director, I'm back now."
As with Fushimi, Awashima, a staff member who followed them from Japan, entered the room with the sound of a thump.
"Oh, Awashima-kun. It looks great on you."
Awashima was elegantly dressed as an upper-class woman.
"I'm afraid not."
Awashima smiles slightly and bows.
Speaking of which, Fushimi thought. He hasn't seen much of Awashima since February. Apparently, he knew she was conducting an undercover investigation somewhere.
Awashima looks great.
"Evidence that Baron Makein was in contact with Mrs. Matilda. After all, he was using the Potato Head Hotel."
However, the report was placed on Munakata's desk, slightly overwhelming the euphoric feeling she had achieved. It is as thick as the Fushimi report.
"There is also evidence that the Dino Chamber of Commerce, the Green Transport Minister and Lord Egg have created fraudulent cartels for tomato imports."
Fushimi widened his eyes. All the names that came out today were the names of the faction that kicked Munakata out of the administration center.
When Munakata reread the report,
"It's well organized. Well, if it's on the table, it's enough for us to return."
He laughed at himself.
"Excuse me, Director."
Fushimi received Awashima's report, which Munakata had finished reading, as if he had half taken it aside. Read it fast.
A wry smile came to Fushimi's mouth.
"I see. You are the one who cannot eat."
Finally, he understood Munakata's intention. For the past six months, he has been gathering evidence to crush political opponents. For this reason, it is easy to establish knowledge to conduct surveys and create contacts, but on the other hand, we establish a base in a city where people's wishes and desires are highlighted.
Fushimi had a slightly spiteful tone.
"Why did you tell the assistant principal and not me?"
"That's right, Fushimi-kun."
Munakata hopes to join again.
"Because the scandals of those who persecuted us seemed to be easier to gather than we expected."
Awashima lightly holds her eyes and adds.
"I was alone enough."
Munakata recently took out the ridiculous rosewood pipe, set it on fire and spoke.
"I was more interested in the fun things that happened in this city. It was enough to burn off the gray brain cells. So I wanted you to be my partner. Play a role as a biographer and doctor alongside a detective. Fushimi-kun, look, immediately."
Soon an old woman came with the sound of the door knocking. She quickly complained about the case of a red-haired man returning to the next colony, who had a large snake with a spotted "speckled dot" and a black dog called a "demon dog."
"Fushimi-kun, Awashima-kun. You can always go back to government. Can you come with me?"
Awashima is smiling, Fushimi laughed and nodded.

Pressed wood producers from Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, Kolkata, Karnataka and so on are increasing their methodology of assembling with the progressions they are getting their product lines like virus press, adjustment machines, thickness control hardware, centre writer, require a free progression of material development. An all-around sustained and developing potential in the Calibrated Plywood section can be seen that can be useful to add esteem in business.
As we as a whole know that the consumption of furnishings and home stylistic layout has expanded because of an upsurge in livelihoods, urbanization, interest in land, western impact, and so on
Also, the presentation of new plans and assorted item scope of furniture has additionally helped in provoking interest among the buyers. Extending appropriation organization and select outlets of furniture producers in the district has likewise helped in impacting the market for pressed wood.
The interest of adjusted compressed wood is the asphalt for a superior domain and organization in future. It will be very pocket-accommodating and mainstream as it will open measurements for different business people, nearby producers and will likewise give alternatives to customers. If we see it from a conservative point of view it will push the country forward with income and inescapable business strength. Many market specialists are foreseeing the development of the compressed wood area in the impending 5-10 years at an exceptionally emotional rate which should be a disciple request factor answerable for it.

The United States of TV High Schools
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The 2020 back-to-school season is a particularly complicated and emotionally fraught one. Students, teachers, and parents across the country and the world have to alter their usual education routines in the interest of social distancing and public health. It’s certainly a difficult, stressful time for many. But thankfully, that’s why the pop culture gods created television.
American high schools on television are much more consistent, comfortable places that the real ones, even when they’re being terrorized by monsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Satan himself (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), or worst of all: Samuel “Screech” Powers (Saved by the Bell). The landscape of fictional TV high schools is a rich and diverse one. But there are quite a few of them. And that raises the question: where are all these places anyway?
Here we have researched and gathered the location of every notable TV high school we can find. Some are set in real cities in real states, some are set in fictional cities in real states, and some are just off the grid entirely. So without further ado, here are the high school settings of some of TV’s most popular young adult shows.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Sunnydale California
Sunnydale High School
Sunnydale is a peaceful California town. It has all your usual features – nice people, great restaurants, a gateway known as the Hellmouth that connects our dimension to demons. Buffy and the rest of her Scooby gang attended Sunnydale High before moving on to University of California at Sunnydale. Sunnydale is fictional but is very likely analogous to the real-life Sunnyvale, California.
Saved by the Bell – Pacific Palisades, California
Bayside High School
Bayside High School is one of the most enduring concepts from Saved by the Bell’s four seasons. Some TV shows take place in high schools. Saved by the Bell is a high school show. The city in which Bayside resides is never revealed but filming occurred in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The O.C. – Newport Beach, California
Harbor High School
The grandiose Harbor High School was enough to give many a young millennial in the mid-2000s supreme high school envy. Imagine walking around in the beautiful Orange County weather as Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) and Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) reminisce about that morning’s perfect bagel breakfast. Newport Beach is a real city in California. Harbor High School is semi-fictional in that the new high school in Newport Beach is known as Newport Harbor High School. Private Catholic college Mount Saint Mary’s stands in for Harbor High on the show.
Teen Wolf – Beacon Hills, California
Beacon Hills High School
The fictional town of Beacon Hills, California is the main setting of MTV’s beloved 2011 Teen Wolf reboot. The town is supposedly named as such due to its “beacon” effect in attracting supernatural creatures. Many of those teenage supernatural creatures prowl the halls of Beacon Hills High School.
Veronica Mars – Neptune, California
Neptune High School
Neptune, California is one of the most well thought-out fictional cities in the high school drama canon. It has some detailed geographical features, a thriving local government, and even its own 90909 zip code! Neptune High has a similarly lived-in feel. Don’t forget to get those Pirate points, everyone! The real city of Oceanside, California stood in for much of Neptune and Neptune High.
13 Reasons Why – Crestmont, California
Liberty High School
Due to ease of filming, many fictional California high schools reside in the southern part of the state. Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why switches things up a bit by taking place in NoCal. Crestmont is the town named in the books the TV series is based on. In the show, the characters hail from the Evergreen County that surrounds it. Liberty High School is where the youth of 13 Reasons Why go to learn…and also learn devastating truths about one another.
Community – Greendale, Colorado
Greendale Community College
Greendale Community College isn’t technically a high school, but many within the show’s universe would argue that a degree from Greendale is basically on par with a high school education. Greendale has a rich fictional history dating back to the 1970s and including real life actor Luis Guzman as an alum. Community creator Dan Harmon based Greendale on his own experiences at Glendale Community College in California.
Gilmore Girls – Stars Hollow, Connecticut
Stars Hollow High School
Stars Hollow is crucial to the mythology and success of Gilmore Girls. The town is a fictional hamlet 30 miles outside of Hartford, Connecticut and was loosely based on the real life towns of Washington Depot, West Hartford, and New Millford. Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is originally from Los Angeles and was inspired to set her new series in Connecticut following a vacation to the Mayflower Grace hotel in Washington, Connecticut. Stars Hollow High is where Rory Gilmore gets her education. The school’s sports teams are the Minutemen.
Stranger Things – Hawkins, Indiana
Hawkins High School
The Internet is flooded with queries as to whether Hawkins, Indiana of Stranger Things is a real place. It is not, and that is certainly for the best otherwise our own world would be teeming with monsters from the Upside-Down. Hawkins High School is the location of some truly traumatic events in Stranger Things from the Demogorgon’s destruction to the Snowball Dance.
Dawson’s Creek – Capeside, Massachusetts
Capeside High School
Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson intended for this ‘90s teen show to take place in his native North Carolina. WB executives had other plans, however, and wanted the show set in Boston. Williamson came up with a compromise by creating the fictional Cape Cod hamlet, Capeside, Massachusetts. The show was mostly filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina. Capeside High School is where Dawson, Pacey, Joey, Jen, and the rest of the crew got their education…when they weren’t hanging out at that darn creek.
Freaks and Geeks – Chippewa, Michigan
William McKinley High School
Though many things in Michigan are named after the Chippewa tribe, including Chippewa County, there actually isn’t a city bearing that name. That makes this Detroit suburb on Freaks and Geeks entirely fictional. Chippewa is named after Chippewa Valley High School that creator Paul Feig attended. The school is named after 25th U.S. President William McKinley. For some reason, he’s a pretty popular choice for fictional school names…perhaps because his tenure in office was short and he doesn’t have a lot of real high schools named after him.
Gossip Girl – New York, New York
Constance Billard School for Girls
Well, this is a first for our list. Gossip Girl is set on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and its depiction of a gaudy all-girls high school is in keeping with that community’s ostentatious displays of wealth. Serena van der Wooden, Blair Waldorf and friends all attend Constance Billard School for Girls where many alumni go on to attend prestigious colleges. Constance Billard’s “sister” school is St. Jude’s School for Boys.
Roswell – Roswell, New Mexico
Roswell High School
This one is a bit of a layup as The WB’s (later CW’s) supernatural teenage series Roswell is adapted from the Roswell High book series. Of course, Roswell High School was always going to play a big role in this one. The 2018 reboot continues to take place in Roswell High School in Roswell, New Mexico.
One Tree Hill – Tree Hill, North Carolina
Tree Hill High School
One Tree Hill takes its name from a U2 song off of Joshua Tree…and also from the fact that it’s set in Tree Hill, North Carolina. Tree Hill is fictional but the show was chiefly filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina. Tree Hill High School is a big factor on One Tree Hill, especially since the town is so fond of the Tree Hill Ravens boys basketball team.
Glee – Lima, Ohio
William McKinley High School
For many of the kids on Glee, their biggest fear in life is never amounting to anything after high school and becoming a “Lima Loser.” This is because Glee is set in the (real) Ohio city, Lima, which is about 80 miles south of Toledo. Of course, as Glee went on, the Lima setting came to be quite ridiculous as more and more famous people just happened to be traipsing through town but that’s a topic for another time. The high school from which the titular glee club operates out of is once again William McKinley High School (like Freaks and Geeks and The Wonder Years).
A.P. Bio – Toledo, Ohio
Whitlock High School
Northwest Ohio turns out to be surprisingly fertile territory for fictional high schools. A.P. Bio is set in Toledo (which is a real place obviously) as a nod from the show’s creator Mike O’Brien to his hometown. It’s unclear why the high school that Jack Griffin teaches at is known as Whitlock but it’s got a pretty strong color scheme with gold and blue and a cool Ram mascot.
My So-Called Life – Three Rivers, Pennsylvania
Liberty High School
Three Rivers is a fictional suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. And that’s fitting given that Pittsburgh sits on three rivers – the Allegheny, the Monongahela, and the Ohio. “Three Rivers” is often used in many brands from the city. Within Three Rivers is Liberty High School, which was attended by Angela Chase and friends. The My So-Called Life Wiki actually has a class schedule for each character if that’s something you might be interested in. Exterior shots of the school are of University High School in Los Angeles.
Pretty Little Liars – Rosewood, Pennsylvania
Rosewood High School
From one side of Pennsylvania to the other. Freeform’s pulpy teenage mystery series is set in Rosewood, Pennsylvania, which is a fictional suburb of Philadelphia. The setting might be loosely based on the real Rosemont, Pennsylvania. The Liars spend much of their time at Rosewood High School before matriculating to nearby Hollis College.
Boy Meets World – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
John Adams High School
Boy Meets World takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and its suburbs. The characters don’t frequently make mention of their surroundings and current city, but the show does confirm it…as if all the Flyers, Phillies, ‘76ers, and Eagles paraphernalia didn’t make it obvious. Boy Meets World starts with Cory Matthews in Jefferson Elementary before moving onto John Adams High School and eventually Pennbrook University.
Friday Night Lights – Dillon, Texas
Dillon High School
Once more with feeling: Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose. Friday Night Lights, both the brilliant NBC series and multimedia franchise around it, has deep ties to Texas. The show is set in the fictional western Texas town of Dillon (and eventually East Dillon). But Buzz Bissinger’s original book and the movie it was adapted into take place in the real western Texas town of Odessa. Both Odessa and Dillon’s respective football teams are known as the Panthers. Friday Night Lights, the show, did the majority of its filming in and around Austin, Texas for all five seasons. It’s a miracle the actors were able to stay in shape with all that barbecue floating around.
The Vampire Diaries – Mystic Falls, Virginia
Mystic Falls High School
A lot of these small towns have a “dark secret,” huh? Mystic Falls, Virginia’s dark secret is that it has a long history of vampires, werewolves, and witches dating back to its founding in the 1800s. Mystic Falls High School is where many of those attractive young vampires, werewolves, and witches get their education. Mystic Falls is a fictional town in Virginia located between Lynchburg and Charlottesville. It’s name in the Vampire Diaries book series was “Fell’s Church” but the TV show had to change that due to it being too similar to the real city of Fall’s Church, Virginia.
That ‘70s Show – Point Place, Wisconsin
Point Place High School
Point Place, Wisconsin and its accompanying Point Place High School are both fictional locations where Eric Foreman, Jackie Burkhart, Michael Kelso, Steven Hyde, Donna Pinciotti, and Fez all live and attend school. What’s interesting about Point Place, Wisconsin is that it does not seem to have a consistent location within the state. At times it is described as a suburb of Green Bay in the north. Other times, however, the characters are able to make it to Kenosha in the south in no time at all. Point Place High School is located at 2120 South Michigan Ave., which is a reference to a Rolling Stones instrumental track recorded at the same address in Chicago.
Riverdale – Riverdale, ???
Riverdale High School
Where is gritty Archieverse teen drama, Riverdale, set? Uh…well, Riverdale. Where is Riverdale? Your guess is as good as ours. Many fans have selected New York state as the most likely location. The series describes Riverdale as being in Rockland County. The only Rockland County in the U.S. is in New York, close to Archie Comics’ headquarters in Pelham, New York. Wherever Riverdale may be, the school that Archie and friends attend is Riverdale High School. Its colors are blue and gold and its teams are called the Bulldogs.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – Greendale, ???
Baxter High School
In the Archieverse canon that contains Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Greendale is a neighboring town to Riverdale, on the opposite side of the Sweetwater River. Greendale, like a shocking amount of fictional U.S. towns, is built over a mouth to hell. Baxter High School is Greendale’s local public high school, attended by Sabrina Spellman and her friends. Its sports teams are known as the Ravens and they are Riverdale’s archrivals.
Daria – Lawndale, ???
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Lawndale High School
What name could better capture the bland suburban ennui of MTV’s Daria than “Lawndale?” Lawndale is not a real place and Daria’s co-creator, Glenn Eichler, won’t even commit to setting it in a particular state, noting only that it is probably a mid-Atlantic suburb of a city like Baltimore. Lawndale High School is one of the most frequently occurring settings within Lawndale and where Daria and Jane go to stand around lockers and be cynical.

Thinking about Skin and Colors
In my current WIP, I have two main characters, one of whom is extremely fair, almost albino. Even his eyelashes are blond. The other is medium ruddy brown. Trying to describe their skin colors, and do it honestly and without too much romanticism (=exoticism) takes me back to my childhood.
I was born in late 1964, which makes me right on the cusp of being a Boomer or Gen X, pick your chart. I started kindergarten in 1969, the year after MLK was murdered. Woodstock. My much-older brother and his new wife played a lot of Dylan and marched in the streets, his hair and beard long, her hair a pixie. He’s still a radical, sends me articles by Ta-Nehisi Coates. When I saw that 75-year-old protestor pushed over by police in Buffalo? That could have been my brother.
Anyway, despite native ancestry, the only Indians I knew were my own relatives (and we all look pretty white), but being part native was just always something I knew about: family stories, some I’ve learned since were romanticized but held a core of truth, as family stories are wont to do.
My first real encounter with people who had skin colors notably different from mine was kindergarten in 1969. Most of the (admittedly handful) of “non-white” students were Hispanic. After all, it was Florida. But there there was a black student, and there would be black students later, in first grade. They were described as “black” and I was described as “white.” But kids are pretty literal, and I can remember thinking, “He’s not black, he’s brown.” And being confused, because I wasn’t white either, I was pink. When I drew pictures of myself on construction paper, I didn’t pick the white crayola for me. I picked the peach one. Even more confusing was the notion that Hispanic people weren’t white. What? Some were a little browner, but not that much, so when other kids said they weren’t white, I seriously wondered what was wrong with their eyes.
Ergo, with the logic of five, in some sort of bambino rebellion, I started calling myself a “peach person.” It was more honest, after all.
But I was a white person, and part of my white privilege was to GET to call myself a “peach person” and be laughed at for it, instead of scolded (or worse). I was privileged to not understand at a DNA level the history of being Black in America.
Yet I think about that now, when writing a novel set in a world that doesn’t have our terms or history of Colonial slavery, but does have racism and narratives about what’s “civilized.” One of the books’ themes is about how we define civilized and what that says about us. I’ve taught a class called “World Civilizations” for 20 years at UNO, so I’ve had a lot of time to think about what that word means. And how ugly (and imprecise) it is.
What is civilized? And how do our bodies, including our skin, become markers for whether or not we get to claim it?
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” --One of MLK’s more famous quotes.
Some of my ancestors were considered “a wild bunch of Indians,” and their land was stolen from them in the 1830 Indian Removal Act by another SOB of a president (Jackson) who, naturally, Trump admires. Miami (Myaamia) people talk about our history as breaking and mending, as a fragmented people learning to live with the fragments. We’re divided in half, the Federally Recognized tribe in Oklahoma, the “remainder,” the Eastern branch (my ancestors), in Indiana. Western and Eastern Miami. Who got to stay? Those who’d married white or had white ancestry (that included the Brouillettes and Richardvilles). Otherwise...Hit the road, Jack--first Kansas, then Indian Territory. The US gov’t still separates us, denies our historic reservation (Kekionga), and refuses to give Federal Recognition to the Eastern branch.
In any case, when I try to talk about skin colors, I find myself avoiding “white.” Ision is pale, or like milk, frosty pink, rosy...but it’s not always a compliment. Teo has less descriptives. He’s rosewood, or ruddy brown.
One way of reversing racism is to avoid much description of skin color. But another is to reverse the subconscious tendency of white writers to note their non-white characters’ skin color but ignore (as assumed) that of the white characters. Upon rereading the first book I realized I had almost twice as many skin-color descriptors for the pale character (Ision) as for the brown one (Teo).
A brown gaze, not a white gaze, in terms of what we notice. Writers are supposed to do that anyway. It’s called “point of view” (POV). But it can be really easy for the POV of the author to accidentally merge with that of the characters. One example of this in lit-talk is the “male gaze”--even when adopted by women: the description of female characters in ways women don’t necessarily think about each other (especially sexually, unless bi- or lesbian...and even there, I’d suggest a difference between the male gaze and the lesbian gaze).
We can also talk about the “white gaze.” It comes in so MANY, many forms. But when approaching a fantasy world that isn’t Earth, I’m trying to think about it, however imperfectly, in the way I did as a child. And see skin in a rainbow hue.
A Crayola box, 64 colors. Which Crayola color are you?
Ision is Piggy Pink. Teo is Sepia.
Me? I’m probably Melon
What color are you?
