Third From the Son - Chapter 38
“No. Tell me. I’m the one who has to deal with the things you do, you owe it to at least tell me what they are.”
It’s a cruel thing he’s doing, but he doesn’t care. This is suddenly everything to him, a truth he needs to unveil before he can rest. Donatello Hamato is dead, gone from this world. His bones rested at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and are dissolving into salt even now. He lived and died a nobody whose name will be lost in a hundred years; he and Galois shared nothing but a base turtle species and a penchant for purple.
Yet Galois feels like he’s linked to him. Not linked, bound. He feels as if there are still steel cuffs shackled to his wrists, with the other ends wrapped around Donatello’s. Every move he makes, every thought in his mind, Donatello is there. Yet Donatello is dead, and Galois is chained to a corpse, but the chains bind him still. They control his movements, pull at him, weigh him down.
And Galois has tried to keep his head above it all, but the truth is he is drowning."
Congrats to Author @faiakishi for finishing their second book! May your winter break be wonderful. I have just read the last chapter and oh boy it was everything I could have hoped for and more.

a drawing of Doth, the masterpiece
Tumblr media
@thedawningofthehour
So, I was reading Third From the Son, DOTH, by Faiakishi, and I got to that infamous moment where Galois yells at Leo about his brother being dead and being consumed by crabs at the bottom of the ocean. If in itself the scene of him on the verge of a mental breakdown due to the sadness, confusion and guilt (among other emotions) that thinking about Donatello causes him and his ending brought me strong images, this definitely cements them. As is my custom, I had to use my older sibling's cell phone to draw.
I did my best, don't strangle me too hard. I tried!
I really like this work and its construction, not only of characters, but of worlds. I had made other drawings before, but I didn't dare to upload them. hope you like.

do you have any rottmnt fanfic recommendations? Either ones that inspired doth or just ones you like generally?
Inspired doth? Hmm, I'm trying to think back. I'd say probably
One Two Three (Four) by CringePhase was probably where I started getting the brain worms. I was still playing with my 2012 crossover idea when I stumbled across that fic. Completely lost interest in that and started thinking about what would eventually be the first table scenes. It's more in-line with the comedic tone of the show, which I really can't do and applaud the author for.
Kick It Up A Notch by Brokenpitchpipe, kind of the inverse of that idea. I feel kind of guilty though because I am absolutely not caught up with it.
And I took some inspiration from all the separated AUs floating around, Cupcakeslushie's in particular. Which sounds kind of weird considering what a good dad Draxum is being in my fic, I know. I considered covering Galois in spray paint for the Aesthetic but I feel like that's a patented Three thing and Slushie has copyright. (Galois still has Donnie's sensory hang-ups anyway, and Good Dad Draxum wouldn't let his kids inhale spray paint fumes like that)
And of course the LFLS influence, though I'm not sure where that ends and where it just becomes ROTTMNT fandom influence. Not really that much, to be honest, if anything doth was born out of my frustration of "No, it makes no sense for Draxum to do that!" while reading. Oh, and I should mention that I've been a Danny Phantom fan since literally the show began so I am undeniably being influenced by his relationship with Vlad Masters and the scores of fanfics where Vlad raised/kidnapped Danny I've read over the past 'check notes' nineteen years.
Other than that, some fics that are sort of like doth:
The Analogous Hues series by alwerakoo, good dad Draxum with Donnie and Mikey
at least they stayed in the family by PurpleCatGhost, separated AU
Blood is Thicker Than Ooze by mybrainisacandywrapper, Donnie is the only one separated, Draxum is a Bad Dad
For Tomorrow by A_Star1234, I believe the only actually kidnapping fic on this list
Nothing Left to Lose by halfwayzone, still in early stages, but Draxum seems to be at least a loving father
The Art of Conflict by Hawkward34, very bad dad Draxum
The Desolate Soldier by ace_pan_enby_bitch, yeah Draxum seems to be a shithead here too
time well spent by codyfromstatefarm, a cute little separated AU and a quick read
Papa Draxum by LeopardShadow, Draxum is an okayish dad
And then just some fics I get excited when I see the update in my inbox:
Little Scraps of Wisdom by clandestineClairvoyant, Splinter stays Lou Jitsu but is still a himbo trying to raise four turtle children
The Rat Race by SixthJaw, where Splinter is a homeless rat himbo trying to raise four turtle children
The Pixelated Purple Dragon: Othello Von Ryan by ObsessedWithTeetles, Purple Dragons kidnap Donnie and put a shock collar on him because they're hoes
And I think that's it for now? Good god there's so many Fallout fanfics in my subscriptions that haven't been updated in five years.

He keeps thinking that the goyles will appear and tell him it’s time to eat, or maybe time to go to bed, but then he remembers that Father took them with him this time. Then he’s onto the next calculation and he forgets.
Plans for vehicles. Mounted turrets. Coupures. Gas masks and hoods. Barricades and area denial weapons and spotlight systems, the list goes on and on and on.
And on. And on. Galois’s hands are colored grey and covered in pencil dust. His eyes are heavy, his head feels like lead.
He works.
galios/donnies remaining childhood went out the window the minute draxum started his war (and even some time before that)

SORRY FOR THE LONG ASK but you activated my sleeper agent rottmnt brainstorming Re: The Video Game Question
Raph: would probably like low strategy single player games and lean toward arcade/motion control based experiences because they present a way around the "Hand Too Big Controller Too Small And Breakable" problem. As an Oldest Sibling (speaking from an Oldest Sibling Gamer pov) he would have been the Designated Single Player Driver (I have a vivid mental image of Raph playing old c tier single player wii games like My Sims Kingdom while Mikey, Leo, and Donnie yell instructions at him) and I think he's still gravitated towards those kinds of games. He also feels like the kind of guy who will thoroughly enjoy every video game he plays but his favorite is still inexplicably just like. Uno for the ps3
Leo: Would like competitive games. I feel like he's the kinda guy who cannot bring himself to give a shit about the story or aesthetics of a game and cannot care at all about single player video games outside of speedrunning or something. The point of games for him Is To Win. I feel like him and Donnie both played CSGO or COD at a young age with voice chat and thats why they are who they are. His favorite game is probably a competitive hero shooter or smth. He probably is playing Valorant as we speak.
Donnie: I feel like he's the only one who is a Capital "G" Gamer. Has the broadest taste but tends to like games he can "lose himself" in. (Competitive shooters, MMOs, lengthy and intricate single player games IE: Dark Souls or Elden Ring, metroidvanias, RPGs, fighting games) If the taste of Donnie Gamer Mode we get in the show is anything to go by, he seems the type to obsess over a game for like a month, beat it 120%, probably achieve some level or speedrunning or competitive infamy and then drop it completely never to be seen again.
Mikey: Would love sandbox games for Sure. Plays Minecraft but only on creative mode. Will play sims but only with cheats to make super intricate mansions or crazy houses or recreate something he saw in a movie once. He would 100% play single player games his brothers already beat so he can look around at the scenery and mess around in a character creator. Will play an open world game and never do a single main story mission and call it quits when he gets bored.
They've all 100% played a bunch of really weird and bad shovelware games or really cheap 3rd party titles because they were what Splinter could get for them. They all have 10 to 15 mobile idle games they'll rotate out bc they all need to be Stimulated at All Times. Yes they have played Mario Party and Killed Each Other over it but more importantly they have played Dokapon Kingdom and have started rivalries that have lasted several months over this game. They will hold grudges til they die over this game. They have never gotten to the end screen of this game and in all likelihood, never will.
Idk maybe my vibes are off tho lol but can you tell I've thought about this a lot to my own detriment
There's actually a point in the next book-I think it's in chapter 1 but I can't remember-where Galois mentions giving Raph one of Draxum's oversized keyboards when he has to do anything on the computer. (Draxum has large-print keyboards because he's Old) I think I've mentioned that the boys all have larger-than-normal phones because they only have the three fat fingers and that's just not gonna work with a standard iPhone. Raph I feel like is basically Strong from Fallout 4:
youtube
(bless him)
I'm reminded of when my sister would sit and watch my play Dream Life to 'learn', until I moved it into my own room. Really, their first console was probably 'whatever Splinter found in a dumpster and still worked', so unless it was something with connected controllers they were probably playing off whatever controllers he'd found as well, so it's entirely possible they legit just had the one controller for awhile. And yeah, they all crowd around to watch Raph play because that's annoying little sibling behavior.
Mikey would love games where the goal is to Make Something. He doesn't care about winning, only stepping back and looking at the finished product and going "nice." I do feel like he'd actually play the sims though-the twins use it as a building simulator, but he'd absolutely get into the lives and stories of his sims. He builds too, but he also gets into creating the sim. He plays Fallout 4 with the Sim Settlements mod and never finds Shaun because all he's doing is building shacks for farmers.
Oh, Leo is absolutely in it to win it. In any way, if it has a score he can use to compare to Donnie's he loves it. The sole exception to this is city builders, I can absolutely see him sinking days into Cities Skylines creating elaborate planned cities with complicated mass transit and beautiful walking spaces.
The other exception is if he can fuck around in a game and be chaotic. He plays Skyrim and installs the sex mods not because he's horny, but because he thinks going around in this incredibly inappropriately horny fantasy world is hysterical. He uses it more as a Medieval Life Simulator and if he completes a quest it's entirely by accident.
Donnie is absolutely the worst gamer and will learn literally everything there is about the game after playing it through once. He also probably mods his games, or even makes his own mods. Some of them to make everything look cooler or add quality of life and immersion stuff in, but he'll also do stuff like install the mod that replaces the Skyrim arrow noises with a man going "pew!"
Omg they absolutely played knock-off games as kids. They probably lied to Mikey about them being off-brand so he didn't feel bad about their situation, telling him that the title was a misprint and all the ads for the actual game were lying.

I'd like to imagine that if they get Galois back to the lair- they just force him to listen to the rottmnt intro theme and the spell is magically broken by it.
I had the theme song stuck in my head the entire time I was in the shower thanks to you.
Somebody also brought up the Library Rap breaking the spell, since he literally shouts his own name during it.

I'm reading a rottmnt fic, y'know, like usual, when at one point Donnie call Draxum father and my mind when directly to Galois.
Now, i can't stop thinking about the amount of PTSD that your fic cause me, That i can't read others fics without thinking of yours.
But then, i remember that i did this to myself.
It actually kind of grinds my gears a bit whenever fics have the turtles call Draxum 'dad' in anything but a satirical manner. I just feel like Draxum is too old-school for that. More like 2012 Splinter vibes, where he is still unquestionably Dad but the turtles still use a more formal honorific because that's just how he raised them. And even then, it's implied that they called him Papa when they were little. Which is actually a thing in Japanese-Papa is a loanword and kids will usually start calling their dads that when they first learn to talk, (which makes sense, 'pa' is one of the first and easiest sounds a baby starts to make, along with 'ma' and 'ba', which is why names for moms and dads are so similar all over the world) and then they graduate to a more formal title once they're older. For the 2012 boys, for some reason that title was just Sensei.
I did put in one hint that Draxum told Gale that he called him Papa as a baby turt. And Gale will use it if he really wants to be manipulative, unaware that it actually has zero effect on Draxy. I actually looked up all the words for Father in Old Norse, thinking if Draxum did raise kids, he'd want them to call him what he called his own father. And the title that I found most likely, based on his place of birth and the time period I imagine he was born in, was, and I kid you not, Far. Norse kids legit called their daddies Far. Which-these were the Vikings, many of their daddies were sailing around the world for years at a time, bringing back new stepmoms and making baby siblings their whole childhoods, so that part's accurate. (I kid, Draxum's old but the Viking Age was over by the time he was born) But I felt like people would see that and be more confused than pointing and going "that's Draxum's word for dad! How cute!"
Another Old Norse word for dad was literally just dad. Which makes sense, English is also a Germanic language and took a lot from that language family. But I think something would have been lost if Splinter was Dad and I called Draxum Dad(Faroese style).

I don't know much about ATLA, my knowledge comes mostly from summaries and nerdy osmosis, but when I read that Galois was like an evil sokka I couldn't help but get confused, mostly because I follow a crossover fanfic between ROTTMNT AND ATLA called 'Tale Of spirits' in which the turtles are accidentally sent to the ATLA world after book 1, and each of them end up in different places.
Leo with the avatar gang, Mikey with Zuko, Raph with Toph and finally Donnie with Azula (hands down my favorite dynamic).
And because Leo ends up having a lot in common with Sokka, I figured if anyone would compare Leo to any avatar character it would be him.
(I also want to steal this space to highlight how awesome the intentions between Donnie and Azula are and how Donnie ends up being the only person in his life besides his father who doesn't shrink from his threats, but actively talks back. Donnie: I didn't fight you not because I'm bound by some stupid spirit rule, but because I would kill you).
Yeah I've read it too, to be perfectly honest canon Leo is more like Sokka, but Leo is being very emo here and it's a requirement to make fun of Zuko when we talk about emos.
I made the parallel to Sokka when Galois was having trouble with public speaking, something Sokka did during The Day of Black Sun. But aside from that, Donnie and Sokka both 1) are sarcastic, 2) meat-eaters, and 3) are mad geniuses who are also totally dumbass.
But watch ATLA. Seriously. It is my all-time favorite show and it holds such a special place in my heart.
