Asteroid City.
D: Wes Anderson (2023).
Even for a Wes Anderson movie, Asteroid City is full of quotation marks. It’s about a convention of “Junior Stargazers,” (brainy teenagers) in a small desert town in 1950 (presented in a stylized cinematography we’ll call Retrocolor) whose claim to fame was being hit by a meteor. But the film is framed as a stage re-enactment penned by renowned playwright Conrad Earp (Edward Norton skewering theatrical pretension and slowly establishing an Edward Norton Type) which is itself refracted through a TV documentary about the play (both shown in vibrant black and white with Bryan Cranston channeling Rod Serling). The action of central film is centered on the budding relationship between a war photographer (Jason Schwartzman) who after two weeks has just told his children that their mother has died (“There never seemed to be a right time”), and a depressed movie star (Scarlett Johansson) that largely takes place in conversations between their adjoining cottage windows in a deadpan tone that makes Hal Hartley seem like Paddy Chayefsky. As usual Anderson assembles a large, overqualified cast (Steve Carell, Matt Dillon and Liev Schreiber have almost nothing to do) and stages everything with a studied, artificiality (featuring the prettiest and most controlled A-Bomb tests you’re likely to see this year).
But if this isn’t the director’s best movie (still Bottle Rocket) it’s his best since he became “Wes Anderson.” The distancing actually draws you into the world he creates and what it says about the tension between postwar optimism and post-nuclear anxiety that defined a certain point in history, and that history’s culture. And there’s a certain wonder in the director’s creation of a backwater town that’s suddenly populated by some of our most eccentric actors (seriously, where HAS Matt Dillon been?) and through a combination of an alien visitation and a government quarantine (neither of which is presented as a big deal) becomes a community for a time before being abandoned like a film set.  At one point a cowboy (Rupert Friend) tells some school kids not to fear the alien (“No he ain’t American. No, he ain’t a creature of God’s Earth, but he’s a creature of somewhere.”) and Anderson extends this empathy to all of his characters who might be post-ironic conceptions but who flesh themselves out. They may act as though they know they’re in a play, but they are anyway. Asteroid City is a deadpan humanist masterpiece.

THE MONSTER BALL TOUR FASHION CREDITS: VISUALS
Today we’re starting off with the fashion credits for the Monster Ball tour with some eye candy - the visuals! Lady Gaga commissioned Nick Knight and Ruth Hogben to create all the backdrops and interludes for her second world tour while Keiron O’Connor did the promotional shoot.
All visuals were shot in November 2009 at SHOWStudio in London under fashion direction of Nicola Formichetti.
Tumblr media
In the first visual, she’s wearing her custom Haus of Gaga x Nasir Mazhar silver metal orbit bodice, which rotates around her body.
Tumblr media
She also wore her own vintage Versace Z76 tortoiseshell shield sunglasses with golden metal accents.
Tumblr media
Gaga’s patent black pointed-toe pumps with silver metal accents are Dolce & Gabbana (pictured in crocodile optic).
Tumblr media
In the second shot, Gaga dons the Love black lace bra by Agent Provocateur.
The white glamorous faux fur marvel is from Benjamin Cho’s Spring/Summer 2005 runway for which he joined forces with The Humane Society of the United States – the nation’s largest animal protection organization - and Glenoit Fabrics to present an innovative and daring collection, incorporating faux fur as an essential to the socially conscious wardrobe.
The Humane Society of The United States was “very excited to have this opportunity to work with Benjamin Cho and Glenoit Fabrics to spread the message that consumers can make a compassionate difference for animals by choosing faux fur”.
Tumblr media
Nicola made sure that everyone looked good. Two of the female models are wearing designs with intricate embroidery and embellishment from QASIMI’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection.
Tumblr media
Let’s get to the interludes! First up, the “Jumping” film. Let me introduce to you: young Serbian designer Marko Mitanovski.
Marko created Gaga’s black mixed media pleated and ruffled top with silk ribbons that she flipped to the side and wore as a jacket.
Everything you’ll see from Marko in this breakdown belongs to his Spring/Summer 2010 “Lady Macbeth” collection.
Tumblr media
These insane Piccadilly Axe patent leather ankle boots with crystal-embellished axe and clear PVC layer were created by Rupert Sanderson for Karl Lagerfeld’s Fall/Winter 2009 collection.
Tumblr media
For the infamous “Puke” film, Marko created this white mixed media pleated lace-up skirt with voluminous mermaid-style bottom which Nicola styled into a strapless dress.
Tumblr media
Mother Monster treated the fans with two different looks in her “Paws Up” interlude.
The first one consisted out of this Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2010 “Plato’s Atlantis” collection olive & bronze bomber jacket-inspired nylon jumpsuit with zipper details, brown snakeskin leather belt, cabochon & paillette-embellished neck brace...
Tumblr media
...custom black leather officer cap by “The King of Leather”, New York-based David Samuel Menkes...
Tumblr media
...and Titanic bronze metal platform ankle boots with screws, also from the same Alexander McQueen’s collection.
Tumblr media
In the next cut, Gaga kept on the neck brace from the previous Alexander McQueen look, paired with a latex outfit by Atsuko Kudo which includes the 50′s cup bra and the boned under-bust corset with hosiery straps.
The blonde hair antler headpiece was made by Nina Butkovich-Budden for Marko Mitanovski’s collection.
Tumblr media
Of course she sported a pair of green snakeskin leather Armadillo ankle boots from Alexander McQueen’s aforementioned collection.
Tumblr media
Gaga released the “Bloody Space” film (accompanied by her cover of “White Christmas”) a year later as a Christmas gift to her fans.
Here she wears the final look from Alexander McQueen’s “Plato’s Atlantis” collection (which we’ve seen her rock in the “Bad Romance” video already) and the orbit headpiece from Nasir Mazhar’s debut Spring/Summer 2009 collection, made in collaboration with jeweller and designer Matthew Mackeson.
Tumblr media
Her “Edward Scissorhands” backdrop was used for a Regza phone commercial in 2011.
This look is a mishmash of various items. Firstly, Gaga wore a blue printed chiffon dress by Alexander McQueen which she paired with a silver metal funnel skirt and matching neck-piece are from emerging designer Gemma Slack’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection.
Her lip-shaped black hair headpiece is from Charlie Le Mindu’s Spring/Summer 2010 “Girls of Paradise” collection.
Tumblr media
She’s also rocking the Alpina Goldwing shield sunglasses she got at Jack’s Eyewear store in LA.
Tumblr media
The claw-inspired black patent leather gloves with buckle closure are another piece of art signed by Marko Mitanovski, made in collaboration with C&G Classy Gloves.
Tumblr media
The look was completed with blue stingray leather Armadillo boots by Alexander McQueen.
Tumblr media
“Plato’s Atlantis”, galor! The Italian-American beauty donned another full look from the collection! This time: the top version of the above pictured printed silk dress, and pearlescent nude leather Armadillo boots for the “Money Honey” backdrop. But there was another cool item...
Tumblr media
The brocade-embossed metallic gold leather and cotton circle bag, she poses with, belongs to ThreeASFOUR and dates back to 2004!
Tumblr media
In the “Teeth” interlude, our girl went for a vintage Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 1999 lacquered lace midi dress with long sleeves!
Tumblr media
For the “Tattoo” film, where we can watch Gaga getting her “Dad” tattoo, she’s wearing nothing but an ecto-skeleton head- and arm-piece custom-made by Gary Card.
Tumblr media
Mother Monster wore a bunch of different looks in her “Manifesto of Little Monsters” interlude.
The first one is this black silk satin lace-up bolero jacket with lattice bust and ruffled neck & cuffs by Marko Mitanovski.
Her animal print mask is signed by NOKI who...
Tumblr media
... also custom-made the Mickey Mouse motif mask embellished with safety pins.
Tumblr media
Next, Gaga sports nothing but a Patrick Ian Hartley clear PVC cut-out face corset mask.
The mask is shaped to fit under the nose and around the wearer's cheeks with an oval opening of the mouth. Four lacing holes at each side.
Tumblr media
Words can’t describe how much I actually love this look.
Gaga rocked a black human hair coat by Charlie Le Mindu paired with one of the spiked zip-mouth rubber masks from Jaiden rVa James’ Spring/Summer 2010 “Youth by Youth” collection.
Tumblr media
Let’s finish this breakdown with one last Alexander McQueen “Plato’s Atlantis” look.
Gaga sits in a blue printed iridescent Jakob Schlaepfer fabric one-shoulder top, paired with her favorite Alpina Goldwing shades we saw above.

Upcoming competition is EuroBasket, happens before the Olympics. They've named 16 players to the roster, only 12 make the final roster. You're allowed one player on the roster who has French citizenship but doesn't live/born in France. Usually Bria Hartley takes up that spot but she doesn't want to do EuroBasket this summer and they're trying to get Gabby an exception since she had citizenship from a very early age and lived in France a couple times. If they get the exception (which they're expecting to) both Bria and Gabby can be on the team at the same time if they want to. The WNBA season happens at the same time which is why you sometimes see players opt out of EuroBasket and players missing parts on the WNBA season. There aren't a ton of European players in the WNBA though because they play in Europe and most of the time are paid more there. France has a player named Marine Johannes who is the star, Iliana Rupert is the 19 year old star in the making, Gabby Williams will be another star and then hopefully they can have Bria Hartley and Gabby at the same time. And then there are a bunch of great role players.
Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. Any Twitter or social media accounts you’d recommend I follow to get more news about euro basket? I’d like to watch it!

A Fragile Peace: Armistice after the Great Culture War
[...]
It’s no secret that I do not have my finger on the pulse of our age. I can, given time, remember to hold a mirror up to its mouth to see if it’s still breathing, but that’s about it. This is largely due my being a seething cauldron of self-regard and venality, but it may be for other equally valid reasons too. I don’t really care.
But that means this esteemed chronicle is falling woefully behind. The last time we broke a story, it was about my torrid affair with the then-Minister of Defence, which I only revealed because, due to an unrelated matter, I needed a public alibi. Sadly, I cannot always rely on my own sexual allure to the political classes to push us to the forefront of news.
The only way to get ahead in the publishing game is to start commissioning stories on things you assume are inevitably going to happen. That’s why I have asked our war correspondent to report back from the frontlines of the impending societal rupture that will define our post-pandemic world. I present to you, from several years hence, the Armistice of the Great Culture War.
[...]
Words by Lydia Happenstance, Culture War Correspondent
Last Friday, on the third day of the third month, 2025, after nearly one and half years of confused and needless violence, the guns, sirens, and opinion pieces fell silent to mark the beginning of Armistice and an end to the Great Culture War.
It began as a battle of words between the UK Conservative Party and an enemy that they had themselves largely created; a Frankenstein’s monster stitched together from scraps of Daily Telegraph premium content, animated by fears of civil unrest and falling house prices.
Their repeated assertions that you can’t say anything anymore, echoed and expanded upon by their outriders in the national press, culminated in the creation of the British Bastion of Culture [1], a paramilitary group whose mission statement was as emphatic as it was baffling: ‘To save Winston Churchill from the Marxists’.
Seeing this as a provocation, a protagonist in the Culture War gradually coalesced. After dozens of public meetings and committees of varying degrees of formality, the People’s Vanguard was established on a Zoom conference call in October 2021. Composed largely of sullen academics, irascible Twitter activists and musicians who have been unable to find meaningful employment since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Vanguard – known more commonly as ‘The Wokeists’ – began to prosecute a bloody and merciless campaign of tolerance on an unsuspecting populace.
They became known for their guerrilla tactics, affixing plaques of detailed historical context about the role of slavery and structural racism onto statues, buildings, and Cabinet Ministers in a series of daring night-time raids. It was said of them that ‘the armies of the Woke never sleep’.
Retaliation from the BBC was swift and unforgiving, as they took control of local television stations and forced broadcasters to play the German episode of Fawlty Towers, which they mistakenly thought was deemed offensive by ‘the Lefties’.
By the end, and possibly from the very beginning, it was clear that many of the combatants no longer understood what they were fighting for, only what they were fighting against. The War became an end in itself, rather than a means to any kind of glorious future. Ultimately, it was attrition and the exponential increase in casualties that made a ceasefire inevitable.
The Armistice was signed in Droitwich, for reasons unknown. It was attended by the democratic committee of the Vanguard, led by their Tribune, the distressingly middle-class Marxist poet, Rupert Trebuchet MA, and by BBC leader and regular Spiked columnist, Sebastian Spitegills. No eye contact was made or pleasantries exchanged as the parties, mediated by the comedian Michael Macintyre – chosen for being so banal and anodyne as to be a wholly neutral party in the Culture War – hammered out the terms of peace.
The Treaty of Droitwich runs to some 270 pages with many complex agreements made. No off-colour jokes are to be told below the 28th parallel, meaning that you will now have to travel North of Ipswich if you want to watch a Carry On film or reference the name of the dog in Dambusters. Equally, those who wish to use the term ‘problematic’ or write a Guardian long read about culturally appropriative Halloween costumes will be obliged to travel to the South of this line that formally marks the schism in our divided nation.
Both parties have agreed to stop using the word ‘triggered’, whether ironically or unironically.
Perhaps most controversially, but in the spirit of compromise, both parties have agreed that certain issues, such as trans rights and the utilitarian calculus of whether or not Churchill was a net positive to the world, will be uniformly responded to with the dictum: “It’s actually very complicated actually.”
The Treaty also allowed for the exchange of prisoners of war, many of whom have been away from their uncomprehending and slightly embarrassed families for many months. Sadly, deaths in the POW camps of both sides have been so high that very few will be returning home. The Bastionites, considering hanging to be a tradition that uniquely represents ‘the very best of British’, have been enthusiastically performing summary executions since hostilities first began. The Wokeists took a less violent but more tedious approach, instead forcing captured fighters to undergo Tesco’s corporate Awareness and Sensitivity Training. Many of the BBC soldiers, however, preferred to take their own lives rather than learn what a microaggression is or how to avoid speaking disparagingly to BAME colleagues. Deaths number in the thousands.
The UK Labour Party hailed this historic accord. Speaking in the House of Commons, party leader Sir Keir Starmer was forceful in his praise for the Treaty, saying: “This is an event that has occurred and we recognise that.”
Prime Minister Michael Gove, when asked for comment, responded obliquely: “My mandibles are sharp and my belly hungry. Bring in the infants that I might slake my abhorrent thirsts.”
Despite the progress that has been made, many observers are predicting that the peace that has been brokered will be a fragile one. On Sunday morning, on the outskirts of the Sussex village of Piddinghoe, a small skirmish broke out over whether the War should be commemorated with red or white poppies. The word ‘Imperialist’ was spray-painted on a telephone box before a library was set on fire in quick reprisal. Many more such incidents can be expected before peace truly settles in.
There are even reports that some will not accept the hard-won peace. Former Commandant Laurence Fox, the second highest ranking General of the BBC army, is said to be stationed in a bunker on the Isle of Man, where he has either not been told or simply refuses to acknowledge the ceasefire. He will not be alone. No contact has been made with Julia Hartley-Brewer’s submarine for more than three weeks.
Speaking to civilians – those who have been victims of the violence, displaced by the upheavals, or simply mildly inconvenienced by having the same episode of Fawlty Towers repeated on their televisions for the last year – they remain unclear as to why any of this happened in the first place.
“I don’t understand any of it,” said Clive Purloin, a roadworks engineer, who was caught briefly in the crossfire as rival groups clashed in Liverpool over whether Ken Dodd was a fascist whose statue should be toppled. “Really. Not a clue.”
It is a view shared by virtually everyone.
Tumblr media
The signing of the Treaty of Versailles. It was like this but much, much stupider. ----------------
[1] Only belatedly realising, to their incandescent, bovine fury, that this meant they shared an acronym with an organisation purportedly representing everything that they despised. Attempts to rename the group were prevented by them having entered into a two-year contract for the website domain

It seems that when it comes to protecting and defending, women's instincts are far more deadly than men.Social psychologist Sandra Wheatley said: "This is not the kind of thing there is a lot of scientific research into but one of the things that has been noted through observation is that women are far more responsive and observant than men."This is thought to be linked to the fact that traditionally, historically and evolutionarily, women have been the ones who have been responsible for babies and young children."As we all know, they are loose cannons and are likely to fall off walls and climb up trees. It has been shown many, many times that women react and respond much more quickly than men."They are simply much more likely and much quicker to intervene when they see danger."It is just the way we are wired, in much the same way that women in general are much more verbose than men, while men are seen as having better spatial abilities."I know from my own experience that if my two year old daughter is about to slide off the back of the sofa, it is likely to be me or her grandmothers who react while her dad watches Sky Sports."There is certainly plenty of anecdotal evidence to show that a mother's drive to protect her children is the most powerful heroic instinct in humans.American mum Cindy Parolin showed no hesitation when her six year old son was attacked by a cougar.  cheap nfl jerseys

The Wheel of Time - Origins from Dan DiFelice on Vimeo.
A series of animated shorts created to accompany Amazon’s 2021 release of the fantasy series, adapted from Robert Jordan’s award winning Wheel of Time.
I was brought on by MPC Episodic and Amazon to direct these films by highlighting lore from the Wheel of Time world in a fresh way for diehard fans and those new to the franchise. The series brief began with the iconography of paintings: telling stories within the frame. From there it was all about bringing these frames to life and adapting the scripts and lore from the books within this beautiful medium.
The series is now streaming on Prime Video.

UK radio host under fire for highlighting low Covid-19 mortality among healthy & young and calling for them to ‘carry on living’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A British journalist was accused of callousness and stupidity after sharing NHS figures showing that Covid-19 “mostly kills the very old & the very sick,” and arguing that the young and healthy should go on with their lives.
Talkradio host Julia Hartley-Brewer drew fire and fury online by injecting some statistics into the incendiary ‘lives v the economy’ debate. “Just 377 healthy people under 60 have died of Covid. That’s not a typo. There are no zeros missing,” she tweeted, sharing a post by columnist Paul Embery.
And for the hard of understanding virtual signallers, that doesn’t mean “to hell with the old and sick”. It means the Great Barrington Declaration was and is correct: help the millions of old & sick to shield while allowing the young & healthy (& our economy) to carry on living.
— Julia Hartley-Brewer (@JuliaHB1) December 26, 2020
The figure is accurate, if outdated. The latest weekly update from the National Health Service (NHS) England, up to December 23, puts the number of people under 60 who have died from Covid-19 in hospitals, and had no prior conditions, slightly higher – at 388.
Despite the difference, Hartley-Brewer’s point still stands, which is: “help the millions of old & sick to shield while allowing the young & healthy (& our economy) to carry on living.”
The take was met with much rage online, including from people who seemed to ignore her ‘no, I am not saying let the old and sick die out’ disclaimer and rushed to topple the straw man. Hartley-Brewer pushed back against some of those comments, calling them “disingenuous or wilfully stupid” and sharing a few personal attacks made against her.
These people are either totally disingenuous or wilfully stupid. It’s hard to decide which sometimes. This one may be both. https://t.co/gvMartdvbw

No you didn’t. My parents are in their late 70s and they’re not expendable either. But the country shouldn’t be locked down to protect them.
— Julia Hartley-Brewer (@JuliaHB1) December 26, 2020
She didn’t seem as ready to reply to more nuanced criticisms, however. Covid-19 creates problems on many fronts. For example, hospital cases drain the limited reserve of medical resources and labour. “Flattening the curve” to prevent overwhelming the healthcare system was the initial rationale for social distancing rules and lockdowns, before both issues got highly politicised in some Western countries. At the moment, over 18,000 hospital beds in England are occupied by Covid-19 patients, who have their own pool of beds that are separate from other patients.
….but like all disasters, for every death we can expect many more people to be injured and survive. And so it is with COVID-19. Most hospitalised patients will survive but they will take a long time to recover. Many will experience so-called ‘Long COVID’. 3/10
— Rupert Pearse (@rupert_pearse) December 24, 2020
There is also an argument to be made that protecting the economy by allowing less vulnerable people to take the risk and go on with their lives may not be viable long-term. Many survivors develop lasting ailments from the coronavirus, and they will be less productive and more costly to society for years to come. So, straightforward comparisons of lives lost and percentages of GDP shrunk for various scenarios may be misleading.
That said, the Boris Johnson government doesn’t seem to have done a good job of convincing the public that its response to Covid-19 was justified and necessary. Between doom-laden death projections, top officials getting caught flouting their own health guidelines and a broken promise for a relief for Christmas, one can see how some people think that the people in power are simply messing with their lives without a good reason.
