First Year: 1969
Had anybody told him that he would be getting a letter in early 1969, being delivered by a man in strange robes telling him that he was a wizard and he would be going to a school called 'Hogwarts' and learn how to use magic, Sean would have asked if they were dropped on their head as an infant too much.
But it all became horrible reality as the man, Professor Ivan Dreyfuß, who taught Ancient Runes and Alchemy at Hogwarts as he explained, told him he would be taking him to London to a place called Diagon Alley, where he would be able to buy the stuff he needed for school.
What followed was a lengthy discussion between Sean, his older brother Andrew, his mother and Professor Dreyfuß about the following proceedings.
As it turned out Sean's best friends, Liam and Odhran, who lived in the same street as himself, had both also received the same letter as he himself.
That was why Professor Dreyfuß took all three of them, plus a parental guardian, to Diagon Alley to get their school supplies.
//《••》\\
Sean still wasn't sure if the whole thing wasn't an elaborate joke, up until he stepped foot into Diagon Alley.
Unless they were all having the same dream, they were all getting books filled with spells and instructions on how to brew potions.
„Alright, this is real after all,“ Sean mumbled once he saw the wand that chose Liam, as Ollivander had put it, spray a plume of water.
His own wand, blackthorn with dragonheart string if he remembered correctly, spurted some small fireworks once Sean swung it as Ollivander instructed.
Odhran's parents stared in pure amazement at the cloud of green clovers his wand produced.
Their way to platform 9 ¾ on September 1st that year was just as surreal as their visit to Diagon Alley. This time however, Andrew and Henry could tag along.
Andrew wasn't really that impressed, promising him that he would be holding the line at home, while Henry was utterly fascinated by the hogwarts express and wouldn't stop asking their mother if he couldn't go to hogwarts as well.
„But I want to go too. Please, please, please,“ Henry begged, and their mother smiled and layed a hand on his shoulder.
„Maybe you'll get a letter too when you turn eleven,“ she said. Six year old Henry looked as if he couldn't wait to grow older.
A family shuffled past them, an older bloke and a boy that looked to be their age.
The boy had dark brown hair that was all curly and brown eyes that made Sean's stomach do a backflip as they locked eyes.
The boy smiled at him before being herded off by his mother, another family walked past them having Sean loose sight of the boy.
Liam and Odhran showed up a moment later and made him forget about the boy.
They hurried to board the train. An older girl had told them they would be leaving the station soon.
Sean promised his mother he would be writing, since Professor Dreyfuß had told them Hogwarts had a whole fleet of owls the students could use to stay in contact with home.
Henry hugged him and made him promise to write about the school, while Andrew patted his shoulder.
Once on the train he, Liam and Odhran got into a compartment, only for Odhran to promptly offer a fellow first year a seat.
He turned out to be from Derry as well; his name was Shain.
But they didn't stay in their compartment for long, as a plan had formed in Sean's mind.
They were already four first years that were from Derry, and, as it turned out, all of their families were also involved with the IRA. Who knew, maybe there were more.
And Sean turned out to be right, as they found Ryan and Thomas, who were also from Derry. Thomas had even went to the same primary school as them, they just hadn't been in the same class, but Odhran remembered him being pretty good at football.
Sean also remembered Andrew mentioning a boy he hab been in a brawl with british soldiers with, his name had been Doxey.
The world was a pretty small place indeed.
//《••》\\
„What is that? IRA?“ a voice said just as they were in conversation about the current state of affairs in the Bogside.
Sean turned his head towards the source of it. It was a rather short girl with dark blond hair that stood in the open doors of their compartment.
She wore those robes the wizards had been wearing in Diagon Alley, so she was probably not from the muggle world as they were.
„I wouldn't know what it concerns you,“ Odhran snorted, prefering to ignore the girl. But she was oddly persistant.
„But you're talking about it so heatedly,“ she said, leaning more into their compartment, „It must be something important.“
If Sean didn't knew better he would have said her mouth was salivating at the prospect of gaining some gossip.
He got up. „You should leave,“ he said.
Standing so close to her he realized that he was towering over her, she had to tilt her head back to be able to look him in the eyes.
„But-“ she started as Sean pushed her out of the doorframe.
„Now,“ he hissed. She looked quite surprised and about to open her mouth again as Sean bodily turned her and pushed her down the hallway. „Goodbye,“ he said, quickly adding, „Go follow them,“ as he saw a boy with hair as bright as a beakon and a boy that looked like military school further down the hallway, „maybe you can annoy them.“
The girl stumbled off as Sean gave her a shove and immediately as he turned back he was faced with another new face.
„You know, you don't have to squeeze all of you into one compartment,“ a boy with golden blond hair said. He had a pretty thick scottish accent.
Sean had been about to groan in annoyance, thinking the boy would be as nosy as the girl, but sighed in relieve instead.
The boy had to be a first year as well, as he looked to be around their age.
He also wore one of those robes the girl had worn. But unlike hers the boys robes weren't black, his were of a dark maroon color. The remainder of his clothes also looked strangely old, like something from photos of people from the 19th century.
That reminded him, he had risked a look into his 'history of magic' book, and spend an entire evening reading about the goblin riots.
„What do you care?“ Odhran snorted, at the same time as Thomas said, „It's alright. We don't mind.“ They stared at each other.
And Sean remembered how this awkward timing had sometimes ended with Odhran and Thomas in a scuffle that needed to be broken up by one of their teachers; and them getting detention for it.
Sean chuckled as he remembered that, and so did the boy in the doorway.
„Well, alright,“ he said, „just thought I'd offer some of you a seat. Lewis said those compartments only hold four people.“
„No complaints here,“ Shain said and he and the other boys shrugged their shoulders in agreement. It was a bit crammed but they could manage.
„Well, Lew always liked to tell bullshit,“ the boy snorted, which made Sean perk up.
„Your brother's already going to hogwarts?“ he asked, his interest spiked.
The boy nodded, raising a brow as Sean leaned against the wall next to him, crossing his arms. „Do tell.“
„I don't know how much is there to tell,“ the boy said, „Everybody knows about hogwarts, right?“
Sean shrugged and the rest of the boys also looked rather lost.
The boy's eyes widened. „You're all... muggle borns?“ he asked.
„If that means we had no idea we were wizards, then yes,“ Ryan said and the rest of the boys nodded as well.
//《••》\\
The boy, who turned out to be named Aaron, got extremely excited and soon they were seven boys in a compartment for four.
Aaron spend the remainder of the train ride telling them all sorts of things about the wizarding world, hogwarts and quidditch.
„So it's kinda like basketball but on brooms,“ Liam mumbled through a mouth full of pumpkin pasties they had gotten from the sweets trolley.
Aaron, trying to contain a chocolate frog, looked at him confused and the frog managed to jump out of his hands and onto the ground. „What's basketball?“
„Doesn't matter,“ Sean said, waving his hand dismissively, „Football is the only important thing.“
„What is football?“ Aaron asked, and now it was the boys that groaned.
„There is so much we can still show you,“ Odhran grinned, laying an arm around Aaron's shoulders, who looked at Sean with a confused expression that only grew once he saw Sean patting his trunk with a broad grin.
„I hope you got no cat in there,“ he said warily and Sean laughed.
„Of course not, just a football. My mom wouldn't have a cat in the house, she hates them.“
Aaron nodded. „Any of you got an owl?“ he asked once Odhran let go of him.
All of them shook their heads. Thomas' father wasn't too sure about having an owl at home, while Sean and Liam couldn't affort one.
„I have one,“ Aaron said proudly. „An eagle-owl.“
„Wow,“ Odhran said, sounding unimpressed. Ryan and Thomas on the other hand asked to see the owl later on.
//《••》\\
They continued talking about quidditch and football and what was happening in the wizarding world vs in the muggle world.
It was strange for the boys to think that Aaron had no idea what was going on in Northern Ireland, just as Aaron couldn't believe they didn't knew a thing about the blood purity movement around he who called himself 'the dark lord'.
„It's so stupid,“ Aaron said. They had all changed into their school robes once Aaron's brother Lewis had showed up and told them they would be arriving at hogwarts shortly. „If we hadn't mixed with muggles we would've gone extinct long ago.“
„At least we would've gone extinct with grace,“ a voice said.
The voice belonged to a girl. With her dark hair put into a tight bun and her nose held high she shoved Ryan out of her way. „I wouldn't want your dirty blood.“
„They surely don't want your blood either,“ Aaron hissed at her, but the girl didn't seem phased.
She snorted her disdain and strutted off and out of the train.
„I swear this whole blood status thing is totally bonkers,“ Liam said as they made their way out of the train and onto the platform. Aaron nodded avidly.
They watched as the rest of the new students pooled out of their compartment. They were about to follow the older students as there was a loud, booming voice calling over the platform that made many of them flinch.
„Firs' years to me!“
It was a giant man in a furry coat who was holding a lantern and waving them towards him.
„Come on,“ he yelled, „we don't have all evening. Let's get to the boats.“
„Boats?“ Thomas asked, sounding frightened. He apparently didn't like riding boats.
The whole ride over the lake that he spend in a boat with Sean, Liam and Aaron he wouldn't stop shaking,
Thankfully the ride over the lake didn't take long and Aaron assured Thomas over and over again that this was the only time they would have to cross the lake like that.
Thomas still breathed a sigh of relieve as he was finally on firm ground again.
The whole lot of them followed the giant man, up an awefull lot of stairs towards the castle. It seemed to go on forever until they finally managed to reach the top of the stairs and an entrance to the castle.

"The firs' years, Professor McGonagall," the giant man said, smiling broadly at a rather strict looking witch. "Thank you, Hagrid,“ she said primly, „I will take them from here."
She pulled the door wide. The entrance hall was so big you could have easily fit the whole St. Columbas Church into it. The stone walls were lit with flaming torches like the ones at Gringotts, the ceiling was too high to make out, and a magnificent marble staircase facing them led to the upper floors.
They followed Professor McGonagall across the flagged stone floor. From a doorway to their right they could hear the drone of hundreds of voices -the rest of the school must already be here -- but instead of joining them Professor McGonagall showed them into a small, empty chamber off the hall. They crowded in, standing rather closer together than they would usually have done, peering about, some of them nervously the others inquisitive.
"Welcome to Hogwarts," Professor McGonagall said. "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory, and spend free time in your house common room. The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rulebreaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup, a great honor. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours. The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting."
Her eyes lingered for a moment on Sean's shirt, which wasn't fully put into his pants, and on Odhran's open tie. The snooty looking dark haired girl straightened out her bangs. "I shall return when we are ready for you," said Professor McGonagall. "Please wait quietly." She left the chamber. Sean frowned. "How exactly do they sort us into houses?" he asked Aaron. "Some sort of test. My brother refused to tell me what exactly."
Sean's frown only deepened. A test? And that in front of the whole school?
But, then again, Aaron said his brother had refused to say what exactly, and if Aaron's brother was anything like Andrew it could mean that he just wanted to make Aaron nervous and the sorting was nothing to be worried about at all.
Sean saw it as best to just wait for Professor McGonagall to return and see what the sorting would be like. Still, Liam and Ryan spend the better part of the next five minutes with speculating about the sorting.
Liam surmised the sorting had to be magical in some way at least, and Ryan immediately thought about Excalibur which had been stuck in a stone.
„It's just some old hat that they put on us,“ a boy said.
His icy blue eyes shone with the same harsh uppishness the girl had, and his dark brown hair  was strictly parted. He kinda looked like military school.
But before Sean could do more than ask himself how a hat could sort them into houses Professor McGonagall was back.
„Form a line," Professor McGonagall told them while waving about with a role of parchment, "and follow me."
Sean got into line behind Odhran, with Liam behind him, and they walked out of the chamber, back across the hall, and through a pair of double doors into the Great Hall.
Sean could have never even imagined such a strange and splendid place. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles that were floating in midair over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting. These tables were laid with glittering golden plates and goblets. At the top of the hall was another long table where the teachers were sitting. Professor McGonagall led the first years up here, so that they came to a halt in a line facing the other students, with the teachers behind them.
The hundreds of faces staring at them looked like pale lanterns in the flickering candlelight. Dotted here and there among the students, ghosts shone misty silver. Sean looked upward and saw a velvety black ceiling dotted with stars that looked strangely like the night sky outside.
Sean quickly looked back at Professor McGonagall again, watching as she silently placed a four-legged stool in front of the first years. On top of the stool she put a pointed wizard's hat. This hat was patched and frayed and extremely dirty. And if the boy had told the truth that hat would sort them into the four houses.
Everyone in the hall was staring at the hat, so Sean stared at it too. For a few seconds, there was complete silence. Then the hat twitched. A rip near the brim opened wide like a mouth -- and the hat began to sing.
Sean didn't really knew what exactly the hat was singing about, as he was way too stunned by the fact that the hat could talk at all. His brain had effectively short circuited.
It took a bit for Sean to come back to himself and listen to what the hat was saying. By the time he finally managed that the hat was right in the middle of its song.
You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve, and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart; You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuffis are true And unafraid of toil; Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, if you've a ready mind, Where those of wit and learning, Will always find their kind; Or perhaps in Slytherin You'll make your real friends, Those cunning folk use any means To achieve their ends.
The whole hall burst into applause as the hat finished its song. It bowed to each of the four tables and then became quite still again. "Quite a strange thing that hat," Liam whispered to Sean. "And that song."
Sean chuckled under his breath. Yes, this hat didn't really help with trying to achieve a feeling of normality for the first years coming from the 'muggle world', as they called it.
Professor McGonagall now stepped forward holding her long roll of parchment. "When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted," she said.
And wouldn't you know it, one of them was actually the first to be sorted.
„Aberdeen, Shain,“ Mcgonagall called, and, swallowing nervously, Shain went up to take a seat on the little stool.
He grabbed the hat, sat it down, pulling it right over his eyes, and a moment later it proclaimed, „GRYFFINDOR.“ Shain grinned, and went over towards the table that was applauding, but not before high fiving Ryan as he passed them.
„Bachram, Liam,“ McGonagall called and, again, the hat called, „GRYFFINDOR.“ Liam went off to join Shain at the Gryffindor table.
„Backley, Sean,“ Mcgonagall called and, nodding confidently, Sean marched up and put the hat onto his head.
Everything went dark because, just like Shain and Liam, the hat was way too big for Sean's head. But immediately after he noticed that Sean heard the voice of the hat in his ear.
„Ah, very daring and confident young man, but also sharp-minded and creative. Hm... Merlin's Beard, that really isn't simple.“ „Well, Great,“ Sean thought to himself, and the hat responded with a chuckle.
„At least you keep your calm. Let's see, You have quite the creative mind and are very intelligent, but your heart is courageous and daring. Where to put you...“
Sean didn't knew how long it really took, or if he was just imagening it taking way too long and everybody staring at him and mumbling -Liam would later tell him that he sat there for over five minutes.
He didn't really realize it because he was way too busy going back and forth with the hat's voice, who asked him all sorts of questions.
Finally, as Sean was seriously considering asking Professor McGonagall if something was wrong, the hat asked, „Either choice would surely make you happy young man. But maybe I should ask you what you'd prefer.“
Sean thought about it. And for some reason the boy he had met at Platform 9 ¾ came to the forefront of his mind, as well as Liam and Shain at the gryffindor table.
„I wanna stay with my friends,“ Sean thought, while thinking of Liam and Shain.
The hat hmmm-ed again, took another moment to ponder before finally exclaiming, „GRYFFINDOR.“
With a relieved inhale of breath Sean tore the hat off his head and took off towards the second table on the left that was applauding, where Shain and Liam were already waiting for him.
After the little hang-up with Sean the sorting proceeded at the same pace as Liam and Shain's.
„Broderick, Travis.“ A blonde boy with a pretty ridiculous looking bowl cut ran up to the stool. He pulled the hat on and almost pulled it off again, hadn't the hat exclaimed, „HUFFLEPUFF!“
Apparently he was scared of having to sit there for as long as Sean had, because he legged it all the way to the far left side table so fast that the whole hall snickered.
Even Professor McGonagall looked quite amused.
„Butler, Jenifer,“ was called next and a brown haired girl with a pink hairband marched up to the hat, trying to exude the same confidence as Sean. Though she made her nerves quite obvious as she flinched once the hat yelled, „GRYFFINDOR,“ almost as soon as it touched her hair.
„Chapelle, Maximilian,“ was the first to be sorted into Slytherin, and the table at the far right side erupted into applause.
„Cobris, Curtis.“ The stocky boy with the blonde hair as light as a beacon walked up to the stool.
And now Sean experianced how strange the sorting could be when you were the one watching it, not the one being sorted. Because with Curtis the hat took almost a minute to decide the house, whereas Maximilian and Jenifer had been sorted almost instantly.
In the end Curtis was declared a Ravenclaw.
The sorting continued. Two girls were sorted into Slytherin and Hufflepuff before it was the turn of the boy that looked like military school.
„Devin, Charles,“ Mcgonagall called and Sean saw how Liam wrinkled his nose, knowing that he must be looking quite the same. Almost immediately after Charles sat the hat down it declared him a, „SLYTHERIN,“ and Charles marched off to join the table at the far right side of the hall. All the while grinning smugly.
„Dendron, Cary,“ a girl with a brown pony tail was sorted into Hufflepuff.
„Doxey, Ryan,“ was called and after a moment of contemplation he joined them at the Gryffindor table.
„For a moment there,“ Ryan chuckled as he plopped down on the bench next to Sean, „I thought I'd be stuck there for as long as you were, Sean.“
Sean laughed with Ryan and the other two, before directing his gaze back towards the front of the hall as Phillip was called. And moments later he also joined them at the Gryffindor table.
„Holmes, Sheila,“ was sorted into Ravenclaw before Professor Mcgonagall called Thomas.
And this turned out to be the first damper of their evening, because immediately after touching Thomas' dark hair the hat proclaimed him a, „RAVENCLAW!“
Thomas looked at them with quite the torn expression, as he slowly walked over to the table on the right side of the gryffindor table. Thankfully the place for the first years was on the same height as the gryffindors, so Thomas could essentially sit down next to them.
„I wanted to tell it to put me with you,“ Thomas grumbled, while Shain patted his back in a comforting manner, „but I guess it had other plans.“
„Hougham, Victoria.“ A girl with long curly hair and a button nose was sorted into Slytherin after half a minute.
„Jorkins, Bertha.“ The girl that had so desperately wanted to know what the IRA was stumbled up the stairs and sat down on the stool. A moment later she was proclaimed a, „RAVENCLAW,“ and Thomas let out a long suffering groan as she sat down next to him on the bench. Smiling at him shyly.
„Kitcher, Gwendolen,“ was called and the girl with the dark bangs that looked like royalty was put into, „SLYTHERIN!“
The hat had barely even thoughed her head.
She got off the stool and walked over to the table at the far right side of the hall, moving and behaving like the upper class Sean hated almost as much as the British.
„Langthorn, Eileen.“ A girl with blond hair that reached her chin was put into Hufflepuff, and the next to be called made Sean perk up.
„Larken, Ethan,“ just so happened to be the boy with the curly hair he had met at Platform 9 ¾.
He put the hat on and a moment later was proclaimed a, „RAVENCLAW!“
Sean didn't knew what he felt exactly. His stomach dropped and it felt nothing like the hunger he was also feeling.
He couldn't take his eyes off the boy as he walked over to the Ravenclaw table. An older boy at the Gryffindor table reached over and patted his shoulder and Ethan smiled at him. It had to be a brother or cousin or something.
An idea struck him and Sean leaned over to hiss at Thomas. Once Thomas noticed and turned towards him, Sean nodded in Ethan's direction.
Thomas was thankfully quick on the uptake and leaned over to talk to Ethan. The queasy feeling in Sean's stomach eased and was replaced by a warm one of contentment.
„MacCuinn, Deorsa,“ a very butch looking girl was put into Slytherin.
„McKinnon, Olivia,“ was put into gryffindor and shot Sean a bright smile as she sat down on the opposite side of the table.
There was this feeling again. That feeling that this smile should mean something to him, but the only thing Sean felt was confusion and a great big deal of nothing else.
„Miller, Odhran.“ And the second one out of their group was, not sorted into Gryffindor. But other than Thomas and Sean himself, where he could somewhat understand the hat gravitating towards Ravenclaw, everybody who knew him was shocked about where the hat put Odhran.
„HUFFLEPUFF,“ the hat called after the second it spend on Odhran's head.
Sean and the rest of their group erupted into questioning yells and Odhran himself looked utterly confused.
The applaus at the table on the far left side of the hall died down rather quickly, as they saw how slowly and unenthusiastically Odhran scuffed his way over to them.
„Don't be sad about it?“ Cary said, frowning at Odhran's reaction.
But Odhran ignored her in favor of leaning over towards the Gryffindor table, obviously considering just switching tables. Though a stern look from Professor McGonagall informed that decision.
„Molloy, Aaron.“ Aaron marched up to the stool and held the hat over his head, before finally setting it down.
„GRYFFINDOR,“ the hat called and Aaron joined them at the gryffindor table.
„Don't worry.“ A boy that had the same dark hair as Aaron, and by the way Aaron was glaring at him had to be his older brother Lewis, called to Odhran, „once the feast starts nobody really cares where you're sitting.“
Odhran, who was still leaning towards the gryffindor table to be able to listen to the rest of them, nodded with a relieved sigh.
„Mooring, Charles Ivor,“ was called, and the tall, lanky boy was put into Slytherin.
„Pertinger, Tillie.“ A girl with a short mop of curly hair joined them at the gryffindor table, and sat down next to Olivia. The two of them started to wisper and giggle almost instantly.
„Rampton, Josia,“ became a Hufflepuff, and, „Richards, Albert,“ became a Ravenclaw.
Both, „Sùdrach, Ailis,“ and, „Theron, Kian,“ became Slytherins and looked quite pleased with it.
„Towel, Edith.“
A girl with shoulder long, dark blond hair walked up to the hat not showing an ounce of fear. Promptly she was put into, „GRYFFINDOR!“ and Sean couldn help but clap as well.
„Well, could've told you that one,“ he chuckled as Edith sat down next to him.
„Right back at you,“ Edith said, smiling confidently. „I honestly thought you'd be freaking your shit up there but, calm as a millpond.“
She turned on the bench to look over at the Hufflepuff table.
„Edith,“ she told Odhran and held out her hand towards him.
„Odhran,“ Odhran said, taking her hand with a confused frown, which quickly turned into a spluttered exclamation of shock as Edith pulled him towards her.
„Get over here, McGonagall isn't watching,“ she hissed.
Odhran and Sean both glanced at the front of the hall, and Edith was right. Professor McGonagall was occupied with another first year. A girl with long brown hair, an orange hairband and a lot of freckles was just being sorted.
Upon seeing that Odhran quickly stumbled over to their bench, where Edith made him sit in between her and Sean. Like that McGonagall wouldn't be able to see Odhran.
„Feisty,“ Odhran grinned and Edith looked smug.
Fuada Zahirovic, a girl that looked almost as stern as Professor McGonagall, brought up the rear and was sorted into Hufflepuff.
„Wouldn't have guessed that,“ Shain chuckled, fiddeling about with the fork on the plate in front of him.
Sean looked down at his empty gold plate as well. The pumpkin pasties they had eaten on the train seemed ages ago.
Then Sean noticed that the hall had fallen quiet and he looked towards the teachers table. Albus Dumbledore, the head master, had gotten to his feet. He was beaming at the students, his arms opened wide, as if nothing could have pleased him more than to see them all there.
"Welcome," he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Bacon, Mayonnaise and Pickle Jar Water! Thank you!" He sat back down. Everybody clapped and cheered. Sean and Odhran exchanged a look. This head master was nothing like the head master of their muggle school.
"Is he -- crazy?" Liam asked Lewis uncertainly. "Crazy?" Lewis chuckled. "He's a genius! Best wizard in the world! But he is a bit crazy, yes. Potatoes, Aaron?" Sean's mouth fell open. The dishes in front of them were now piled with food. He had never seen so many things he liked to eat on one table: roast beef, roast chicken, pork chops and lamb chops, sausages, bacon and steak, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, fries, Yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, gravy, ketchup, and, for some strange reason, peppermint humbugs.
It wasn't that Sean ever went hungry, his mother had done her damndest to make sure that they were fed, but this was something else entirely.
Sean piled his plate with a bit of everything except the peppermints but before he started to eat he remembered about Thomas.
„Thomas,“ he called, but Thomas didn't react immediately. He was engrosed in a conversation with Ethan.
When he finally turned, after Liam pulled at his shoulder, he and Ethan grabbed their plates and sat down at the Gryffindor table as well. Olivia and Tillie were both pushed further down the table during the whole thing.
„Now, don't look like that,“ Lewis said to a girl that looked to be about his age. She wore a red badge that read 'Head Girl'. „It's the feast. Let them have their fun.

Second Year: 1971
„You know what you're gonna take, Aaron?“ Liam asked, looking over at Aaron who was holding his head in his hands
„Oh, Merlin's beard,“ Aaron groaned, „I have no idea.“ He leaned closer over the list of corses they could choose from, forehead crincled. „Lew did say that Arithmancy is always good to take,“ he mumbled.
„Care of Magical Creatures definately,“ Odhran said, scribbeling on his parchment.
„Wait a minute,“ Shain said slowly, looking over Odhran's shoulder, „are you seriously taking Divination?“
That revelation, and Odhran spluttering as he tore the parchment out of Shain's hand, caused the rest of the gang to bust out laughing.
„Dara wanted me to take it,“ Odhran gruffed, hiding the parchment under his arms, „she wants to know her future.“
„Your academic future is decided by your little sister?“ Aaron snickered.
Odhran just shrugged. „'s not like I'm gonna take a magical job,“ he said and Aaron fell quiet.
„What's that supposed to mean?“ he asked, staring at Odhran and the others as if they were crazy. And his eyes got even wider once he saw them all shrug.
„The plan's to join the IRA after hogwarts,“ Sean said offhandedly, putting down his second cross on his slip.
„The what?“ Aaron still didn't quite understand the conflict the other boys were so invested in, he also always forgot what IRA stood for.
„Irish Republican Army,“ Liam said for the umpteenth time. Just like Aaron had given up on understanding the boys had given up on explaining; it was a mutual case of ignorance.
„So you're just gonna take what you think is interesting?“ Aaron asked.
„Or what our sisters think is interesting,“ Shain snickered. Odhran punched him in the shoulder.
Well, this outlook on life was surely interesting. Aaron up until now had been under the impression that his electives should be something that would aid him in his future career as an auror.
„What did you take Sean?“ Aaron asked.
„Care of Magical Creatures and Runes,“ Sean answered.
„Runes?“ Liam asked frowning, „why not Muggle Studies. Should be easy enough.“
„Professor Dreyfuß is teaching it,“ Sean explained.
Aaron hummed to himself. If he was being honest he didn't really care about the muggle world and their business. But with the current climate around the dark lord and his crowd and him wanting to move against muggleborns and muggles maybe that subject could aid him after all.
In the end Aaron decided for Arithmancy, because Lew was surely right, Muggle Studies, because it could be helpfull to his future career, and Runes because Sean had taken it.

Second Year: 1970
He would like to ask Aaron's brother Lewis about those strange horses, because Lewis was a walking talking encyclopedia.
But Lewis, just like Ethan's brother Kenneth, had graduated hogwarts the year prior.
"You alright there, Sean," Liam asked, brows furrowed in concern.
"You don't see that?" Sean asked, stomach still churning as he stared at the strange horses.
"See what?" Ryan asked, looking back at them from where he was sitting on the carriage.
"Those horses," Sean snapped, pointing at the horses that were pulling the carriage.
"What horses?" Liam asked.
"These!" Sean exclained, pointing at the bone horses and the rest of the gang looked at him as if he was going mad.
"There's nothing there, Sean," Shain said slowly and Sean felt his blood run cold.
"No, there are horses," he insisted, "they're bony and don't have any fur."
The others looked even more concerned now, Ryan about ready to get off the carriage again.
"They're called Thestrals," a voice suddenly said and Sean wirled around to stare at Tillie.
"What?" He asked quite dumbly.
"Thestrals. Hogwarts uses them to pull the carriages. It's in 'Hogwarts a History'," she shrugged.
"You read that brick of a book?" Aaron snorted. Tillie just shrugged.
"I'm sorry, Hogwarts' history is quite fascinating," she said houghtly, stomping past them towards another carriage but Sean stopped her.
"Wait, Tillie," he called.
Tillie stopped with a huff, turned back towards him and crossed her arms. "What sean?" She asked, raising a brow.
"Why don't they see them?"
"Apparently only people who have seen death can see them," Tillie said with a shrug.
Sean froze. "You..." he broke off.
"No," Tillie shook her head, "I don't see them."
With that being said she turned around and climbed onto the carriage where Jenny, Olivia, Edith and Eileen were already waiting for her.
Sean himself only started to move again once Liam grabed his shoulder and made him.
The carriage was dead silent while they moved towards hogwarts, no one wanted to ask the question that was on their minds.
Sean, meanwhile, thought back to when he was nine years old and running an errand with his father, who got shot by a soldier of the RVF. Or merely three weeks before they headed off to hogwarts in '69, as his uncle was shot dead during a riot in the Bogside.

Sexuality: Gay
Nationality: Irish
Residence: Bogside, Derry, Northern Ireland
THE MAGE
Wand: Blackthorn, Dragon Heartstring, 11 inches, Springy
Miscellaneous Magical Abilities:
Wandless Magic
Sean doesn't consider it something that he'll need to learn. He also lacks the focus.
Nonverbal Magic
They learned nonverbal spells in sixth year and it took Sean only three weeks to fully master it.
Spell Inventing
He invented a spell that makes you able to toss fireballs that will burst over the intended target like a molotov cocktail. 'Molotno Ignat' is the incantation, and you're supposed to twirl your wand until a fireball forms, before you toss it using your wand. It'll burst over the intended target.
Apparition
His mother didn't have the money for him to take the classes. He prefers flying anyways, and Ethan will usually offer to side-along apparate with him.
Boggart Form: His mother crying at her kitchen table, all alone.
Riddikulus Form: A firework explodes right in front of her face and she starts laughing. Sean took quite some time to come up with something to counter the boggart.
Amortentia: (What does he smell like?)
Broomstick polish, burning gasoline, dirt, the smell right after a firework explodes.
Tumblr media
Amortentia: (What does he smell?)
Herbs, the smell of old books, broomstick polish, leather.

Inventory: Wand, both wizard and muggle money, pack of cigarettes, a lighter or matches.
Fashion: Mostly convers sneakers, jeans and whatever top he has on hand. His clothes are mostly darker colours and pretty much all hand me downs or from the local church, so they're all patched up and worn in some way or another.
School Uniform: Has his shirt often not put into his pants all the way, tie either untied or he took it off because he hates wearing ties. His uniform is second hand too.
Faceclaim/Voiceclaim: Timothy Olyphant
PERSONALITY
Attentive, Confident, Stubborn, Brave, Honest, Determined, Hot-headed, Cynical, Oppinionated, Protective, Creative.
ALLEGIANCES
Hogwarts House: Gryffindor, though he was a hat stall between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw.
Affiliations/Organizations:
The Backley Family, the IRA, the Derry gang, the gryffindor quidditch team, the Bellycastle Bats.
Professions:
Helped around his mothers shop all throughout his childhood and hogwarts years because his mom couldn't afford to hire someone at the time.
Legman and supporter of the IRA (1970-1981 )
Chaser of the Bellycastle Bats (1976-1981)
Class Proficiencies (O.W.L Grade):
HOGWARTS INFORMATION (1969-1976)
Astronomy: Poor
Charms: Acceptable
DADA: Outstanding
Herbology: Dreadfull
History of Magic: Troll
Potions: Exceeding Expectations
Transfiguration: Outstanding
Electives:
Ancient Runes (3rd): Exceeding Expectations
Care of Magical Creatures (3rd): Acceptable
Alchemy (6th): Outstanding
Dropped Subjects (6th year): Care of Magical Creatures, Astronomy, History of Magic and Herbology.
Quidditch: Sean was Chaser on his house team since his second year, and captain from his 3rd year onward until his graduation. He was poached and later played for the Ballycastle Bats as a chaser.
He's a natural talent on the broom and with the game. His gameplay is pretty quick, almost rapid-fire, he's extremely strategic and can see moves of the opposition ahead of time, almost like a seer.
Favorite Professors:
Ivan Dreyfus
Professor Dreyfuß, who taught Ancient Runes and Alchemy in hogwarts, was the person that accompanied Sean, Liam and Odhran and their parents to diagon alley. Because of his missing father Sean latched onto Professor Dreyfuß as a father figure. They would often meet in Professor Dreyfuß' office and just talk, especially in his 6th and 7th year under the guise of Alchemy.
Minerva McGonagall
Sean had huge respect for his head of house and considers her, like his mother, as a woman more than worthy of all respect. He'll even call her Ma'am instead of Professor sometimes.
Later he even admitted that he's extremely thankfull for the fact that Professsor McGonagall didn't give up on him, as his only wish in life was to work for the IRA.
Seranius Kelman Uffer
DADA teacher in his fifth year was one that really knew what he was doing and managed to make the subject engaging and entertaining, he was strict but fair. Sean learned the most about the subject under him and Uffer overall reminded him of his local priest.
Least Favourite Professors:
Cuthbert Binns
Sean would start out the lesson by putting his robe onto his history book to use as a pillow. He's interested in reading up on magical history events during his off time but he gave up in the subject.
Horace Slughorn
Sean hates Slughorn with a passion and Slughorn trying to 'get him for his collection' didn't help his case. He still likes potions and is rather good at the subject, he just can't stand Slughorns overall personality.
Thurman Starling
It’s not really personal, Sean just doesn't know why they even have to take Astronomy in the first place.

Mother: Maureen Backley (née Accling)
Tumblr media

- Her husbands death in 1966 hit her and the family rather hard and she relied on their local church and community quite heavily to guide her through those trying times. But it also caused her to be extremely close to her boys.
- Her youngest son Henry being killed on ‘Bloody Sunday’ 1972 marked the beginning of her turning her back on the IRA.
