So I was talking to a friend about Senran Kagura and the whole theory about Ryouna being named after the fucked-up hentai genre, and that led to me looking up the term to see how it's written.

And uh. That theory is definitely true.

Ryouki. That's the name of Ryouna and Ryoubi's dead older sister. I'm highly disappointed that there isn't a Ryoubi joke somewhere here too, but well, I'm now absolutely certain that Ryouna's name is intentional. Not sure if that's hilarious or kind of concerning.

As a challenge, I attempted to translate the names of Senran Kagura characters to "localized" versions that retain as much of the original meaning/"vibe"/sound as possible. For those not in the fandom, the characters' names are (likely self-chosen) codenames, and thus, don't necessarily sound like real, personal names. The translated versions are below, along with notes about the choices~

Asuka (飛鳥) — Robin

Not literal, but has a similar meaning and "cute" feel.

Ikaruga (斑鳩) — Hawfinch

Literal translation.

Katsuragi (葛城) — Langley

Langley is the name of an aircraft carrier battleship, as is the original, Katsuragi.

Yagyuu (柳生) — Cassidy

As in "Butch Cassidy", another semi-famous historical figure. Chosen because the names have a similar, masculine vibe.

Hibari (雲雀) — Lark

Literal translation, shortened from "Skylark".

Homura (焔) — Pyra

More or less literal. Pyra means "fire" and 焔 means "flame".

Yomi (詠)— Harmony

詠 is shown as meaning "recitation (of a poem); chanting; singing​" in my dictionary, so Harmony has a related meaning.

Hikage (日影) — Umbra

日影 translates to "day shadow". An umbra is a "fully shaded inner region of a shadow", thus, a similar meaning.

Mirai (未来) — Morrow

Morrow means "the following day", which is similar to 未来's meaning ("future") and name-sounding.

Haruka (春花) — Gardenia

春花 means "spring flower", and Gardenia has a similar sort of overly-feminine feel to it.

Yumi (雪泉) — Crystal

The literal meaning is "snow spring" (as in a spring of water). Crystal is a wintery name that references snow.

Murakumo (叢) — Briar

Almost literal. 叢 means "thicket".

Yozakura (夜桜) — Blossom

Sort of literal. 夜桜 means "night cherry blossom", so Blossom just cuts out the "night" part.

Shiki (四季) — Aeon

四季 means "four seasons", so Aeon also refers to a period of time.

Minori (美野里) — Daisy

Not literal, but the cutesy vibe was too good to resist. 美野里 means something along the lines of "beautiful village field", which led me to think field=meadow, meadow=flowers, and flower=daisy, which has the right happy, sweet sound to it.

Miyabi (雅緋) — Grace

More or less literal translation of 雅.

Murasaki (紫) — Violet

Literal translation.

Imu (忌夢) — Rem

A reference to REM sleep, since 夢 means "dream".

Ryoubi (両備) — Ruby

The meanings of her and Ryouna's names don't translate well, so I picked more for the sounds for them, as well as the twin theme.

Ryouna (両奈) — Rose

Same explanation as Ryoubi.

Daidouji (大道寺) — Egress

Egress, as a noun, can refer to an architectural feature, which matches the "great temple" part of 大道寺.

Rin/Suzune (凛/鈴音) — Verity/Belle

Verity means "a true belief or principle", which has a similar "strict" vibe to the meaning of 凛 to me. 鈴音 means "small bell", so Belle is a mostly literal pun.

Kakashi putting his fingers to his head was scene as a non standard salute, when Ryouna gives Hakone a ‘hasty salute’ in Ask me no secrets, I’ll tell you no lies, i assume its the one were he taps his Anbu Tattoo. Which brings me to the question how do non anbu salute each other/commanding officers??

Ki: “Tbh I have no mental image of this “hasty salute” whatsoever and no idea what salute anyone non-ANBU uses 😂”

The heir of a powerful First Blood family, she was raised to be perfect. However, her strength made her prideful, and her ego is equally large. A reckless battle when she was younger ended in her mother's death— and a massive amount of guilt. Confident, composed, and cool-headed, she demands absolute obedience, as deference befitting her status and power. While she’s not excessively cruel, she won’t tolerate anyone going against her. There's hardly anything she's not good at; be it academics, magic, or physical strength, nothing seems to be beyond her outstanding capabilities.

Her magic is highly abnormal and dangerous, which has put both her sister and her parents at risk. Quiet, nervous, and emotionally fragile, she spends most of her time alone in her room. She’s cynical, dark-minded, and doesn't believe in bonds. People use each other all the time— it’s only natural to take whatever you can get. Her immense magic can do everything from controlling people's bodies to hypnotism and sheer destruction.

She's the same species as Murasaki, her younger sister, but counted as a "vampire" nonetheless. She was involved in the incident that killed Miyabi’s mother and was also injured during it. However, the trauma only made her more ambitious and aggressive. She's proud and confident, but rule-oriented and strict, with a dislike of disorder and rebellion. She expects total respect and compliance and will tear down all resistance to get it. Miyabi is her ultimate role model— she has a strange fixation on the other girl that borders on a crush. Her specialty is electric magic, which she can use to paralyze her prey.

Ryoubi

As the youngest sister, Ryoubi is a little spoiled. She’s used to getting exactly what she wants, regardless of how other people feel about it. Openly aggressive and sadistic, she takes pleasure in the suffering of others. She has a foul mouth and a nasty temper. Her specialty is venomous saliva which induces extreme pain from her bites. She can’t feed from someone without making it utter agony... but she doesn’t mind that.

Ryoubi’s aggressive personality made her disappear into the background... but her lewd behavior now gets her plenty of attention. She’s a pushy, determined masochist as well as a cruel sadist. Whether she's inflicting pain on others or feeling it herself, she loves and lives for suffering. Her specialty is venomous saliva which induces extreme lust in humans. She can’t turn it off, so feeding on someone is guaranteed to end with them a desperate mess.
