My Favourite Music
Modern R&B
When I was 14-years-old, my friends were really into R&B (Take a look at 2016 Billie Eilish and it was something similar to that feeling). I fell in love with an R&B girl. I remember that my mum showed me Labyrinth (1986), which is a transgenerational thing because it had 3/4 waltzing and 4/4 eighties rock combined into a traditional pop ballad. Then, I listened to Young Americans, which was soul rock, because it combined my interests with my friends’ interests. Soul music is probably the closest form of R&B to rock and I didn’t know it yet, but I liked rock. I remember liking Drill and Kendrick Lamar and so on before.
Tumblr media
Rock
Finally, I listened to Ziggy Stardust, which was my introduction to hard rock or glam rock. I remember that I did face contouring for the first time after listening to this (It turned out extremely well because I did it to match my face shape and I am always extremely pleased with my personal style development over the years and how well I control the camera instead of letting others do it). Shout-out to past me for being smart and pretty a decent amount of the time.
Hard and glam rock are just the purest form of rock and I think that the best version of this album is the live version. Hard rock is very good live like classic rock. The Rolling Stones? Not so much.
Tumblr media
I branched out a lot and listened to a lot of different bands that were influences for the album or “pushing back” against the hippie folk movement at the same time as this album was released:
Proto-punk bands like Iggy and The Stooges and Velvet Underground,
Blues rock, country rock, and dance-rock like Rolling Stones,
Funk rock, which Little Richard played a bit, and
Chanson like Jacques Brel (see: baroque pop and classical music).
Tumblr media
This is somewhat ironic because David was a hippie at one point when he was in love. I really take it as a cautionary tale. Meanwhile, there were bands that later carried on the sound of progressive and hard rock:
Progressive, art, and experimental rock like Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall,’ which was film rock, and
Hard rock and metal, especially speed metal, like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple.
I’m not extremely into these bands, but I do like to know them in case someone calls me on it and I need to show off my genre knowledge. Speed metal is probably one of the only metal genres that I can tolerate because it’s the closest genre to rock.
Tumblr media
The more metal a band gets, the less women they sleep with honestly. The lyrics become appallingly unromantic and unsexy. I won’t apologise. The violence at some metal and rap concerts like Woodstock ‘99 is ridiculous.
Dance-rock and funk rock are fusion genres that make R&B accessible to rock. I liked Joplin and Hendrix too, which were sort of minority acts. Some people like to gush about their artistry, but I think that we all know what they’re there for.
I can’t say whether I explored all of these genres before or after I was introduced to The Beatles, but they all sort of branched out of my interest in hard rock and relate to the Golden Age.
Psychedelic Rock
The Beatles are probably the oldest form of rock in the Golden Age and got me into psychedelic rock, which lead to me exploring folk music from all cultures, which made me feel a sense of belonging. I remember writing something somewhere on this blog about how the early Beatles made me feel less afraid of boys too. I was very anti-boy (haha).
I didn’t do this at the time, but I later mapped out whole histories of music in modern foreign culture (e.g., min’yo moving to ryukoka moving to enka moving to Hideto Matsumoto and so on).
Tumblr media
Folk music is honestly a bit of a minefield and I later explain that I prefer folk rock, but it often has White or Asian supremacist and classist messages and I thoroughly dislike that just as a part of my nature.
The concept of one ‘race’ being better than others or people with money being superior absolutely makes me vomit if I’m being honest. I don’t know why. It’s not even virtue signalling. I just have this gut reaction like, “... Gross, man.” It’s odd because my disgust tolerance is high due to being an addict.
Mass Appeal
I started trying to appeal to people by liking modern rock music like Britpop (e.g., Blur), which came from bands like Suede, which came from My Bloody Valentine, which is shoegaze. These are all rock bands, so I was trying not to compromise my rock integrity while finding excuses to chat to people through music. I mostly wanted to discuss folk music though.
Damon Albarn went on to make trip-hop bands like Gorillaz with new electronica elements and Blur (the self-titled album), which took inspiration from late indie and alternative rock like Pavement, which took inspiration from early indie rock bands like Pixies. Other "good” underground indie bands of the eighties that fought back against MTV were Echo & The Bunnymen and so forth.
If I’m honest, I don’t like E&TB. Pavement and Pixies are both nice gibberish. Pixies is more cannibalistic gibberish, which I like, but I digress.
What do I think about Damon Albarn? Hm. He writes really introspective music and I suppose that he’s a “lightning rod” for modern issues that older rock stars were just not in touch with anymore like increased commercialism and sexual objectification of men and mundanity of office life and music and so on.
Tumblr media
Britpop was a commercial reaction to the ironically commercialised rejection of commercialisation that was grunge (e.g., Nirvana). I was never very into Nirvana, but I loved the fashion style before I was into music. It was very commercial.
Miscellaneous
Sometimes, I liked to list Talking Heads and Cure as good New Wave bands just to show that I knew good New Wave bands, but I honestly find New Wave mostly intolerable. New Wave bands are only really tolerable if they have a gimmick like David Byrne being so autistic that everything had to be perfect or Cure with the breathing gimmick or New Order building up the beat of ‘Blue Monday’ gradually.
I liked to list Rites of Spring as good original hardcore ‘emo’ music too just because I hated the later ‘emo’ sound that came from The Smiths and I wanted to speak to emos. Original hardcore is just punk music, which is usually intolerable, but with actually meaningful lyrics. I liked getting as much appeal as possible. If I had to name a punk band? Maybe Sex Pistols. The singer is fit.
Tumblr media
Overall, I just think that the pure punk genre is intolerably whiny and unromantic. What else can I say? Post-punk band The Slits? Yeah, they’re fine, I guess.
Other new bands that I liked were trip-hop act Billie Eilish and pop rapper Doja Cat, which gives me some very mainstream, modern female representation, especially regarding sexual politics perhaps.
At times, I listed slowcore band “Horse Jumper of Love” for modern indie fans because there’s literally always one. The only track that people remember from this is “Ugly Brunette,” but it’s a good track and it seems to satisfy people who like thinking that they have ‘obscure’ taste for whatever dumb, elitist reason.
I mean, there are good obscure bands like The Mekons, but the stuff that these people list is always shite and comes from a false sense of superiority.
Folk Rock
I eventually grew tired and began combing through Bowie’s catalogue again and I found some very early work, which was folk rock. This is probably the most fringe and least mainstream genre in the Golden Age. I grew really attached to him at this point for basically guiding me through a huge chunk of music and my identity. It amazes me how much of my identity is a byproduct of music.
I became really interested in bands like Donovan and even related genres like baroque pop, which Nico from Velvet Underground did. I don’t even know how to get into this. Vague lyrics about living off of the land and your parents hating you and being radically in love and growing your hair out and being broke and doing drugs and trying to belong just mean a lot to me, I guess.
Tumblr media
This was simultaneously influenced by a newfound interest in folk punk like Violent Femmes and so on, which is unrelated. It’s odd that I tend to be influenced by two unrelated sources, each saying the same thing, sometimes.
I honestly credit Violent Femmes with making me feel more OK about disability and addiction and so on in a way that proto-punk really couldn’t. I might discuss later.
I looked back on the folk tradition and became very interested in the blues, especially Delta Blues. I liked Chicago, Texas, and Jump Blues and I listened to all of the usual suspects like Bo Diddley and T. Bone Walker and Nina Simone. Blues music is very good because it’s done in a speaking style like a lot of The Rolling Stones’ work. The ‘blue note’ makes extreme issues of violence, poverty, infidelity, sexual aggression, and cuckoldry seem minuscule. My favourite blues songs are mostly about being tired with people’s hysterics because I am.
Tumblr media
Maybe I should do a post on womanhood and the concept of womanhood. I have so much to say about that... No one ever listens to what anyone says in the West.
I mean, I gush over David because his notation tends to ‘invite’ you into the head of the speaker (e.g., he’ll drop a note before the sad word is sung or he’ll rise a note only after a positive note is sung, so the listener is sort of ‘thinking’ along with him). His later New Wave stuff didn’t do this so well. I mean, there was a song called “It’s No Game” where he had a breakdown, but I wouldn’t call it “enjoyable music” except for the novelty of seeing David having a breakdown. The Lodger cover art was nice, I suppose. What else can I even say?
I honestly need to do a review of the sixties softcore films...
At the time, I went back and listened to a bit of soul too (e.g., Aretha Franklin and Martha & The Vandellas), who inspired rock bands like Rolling Stones, and I listened to a lot of gospel and work songs to try to connect the whole ‘tradition’ together. Soul sort of takes the choral nature of gospel and gives it a solo singer while keeping the blues riff and I suppose that I like that a lot.
Tumblr media
Next?
Who knows. I don’t see myself greatly loving the rest of R&B and reggae and so on beyond maybe “Is This Love” by Bob Marley. Haha.
Well, now I’ve bared a chunk of my soul!
“If I could stick a pen in my heart, suicide right on stage, would it be enough for your teenage lust, would it help to ease the pain?” 🎵

Singing Lovebirds (Makino Masahiro, 1939) for all I know there might be a long tradition but I don't think i've ever seen a japanese musical before. a merry thing about love triangles, antiques dealing and a lot of umbrellas. there's no great extravagance to this. visually it's the same as the standard productions from this era: outdoor sets, medium shots, a mostly still camera. but it's nice and infectuous. the songs too are nice. not showtunes but ryukoka songs

Silly me, I thought Ms. Junko Akimoto was an “Enka” singer. Music experts say that she is actually a “Kayōkyoku” singer. Enka is based on a pre-war Japanese traditional singing style called “Ryukoka”, while Kayokyoku is a much more modern pop music by instrumentation and singing style. Enka has been likened to tango, Kayokyoku is likened to jazz.  I’m not sure I could explain the distinction. I can remember back in 1979 when I could tell you the difference between Punk and New Wave music. But I digress …
Call it what you will, I think that Junko-san is grand. She’s beautiful.
I’ve grown to appreciate these genres — mostly because I can’t stand what is popular in America. These songs are all about secret longings, broken hearts, guilt and atonement. It is a lot like country music actually.
I first found out about Ms. Akimoto-san from an Iwasa Misaki music video.
You will hurt my feelings if you do not watch this. You all know that I am a big fan of Iwasa Misaki, and that Wasamin has launched a successful Enka singing career. It was mostly through Misaki-san that I have grown to appreciate the traditional Enka Japanese singing style.
In Miss Iwasa’s video cover of “Ai no Mama de (The Way Love Was?) it was widely quoted that Wasamin is “tutored by Japanese Enka singer Junko Akimoto”. This particular song, lyrics linked here — was Ms. Akimoto-san’s most famous single. “Ai no Mama de ..” reached the top of the Oricon weekly single charts in January 2009. She became the oldest singer (at age 61) to top the charts in Japan. Well … this still makes her a spring chicken in comparison to any of The Rolling Stones.
Starlight: Oh what time is it? I think that Hee-Haw is on.
I (HEART) Junko Silly me, I thought Ms. Junko Akimoto was an "Enka" singer. Music experts say that she is actually a "Kayōkyoku" singer.

Ryoichi Hattori & Columbia Jazzband - Oiwake (1936)
A personal favorite of mine and an early upload. I might see if I can remaster this one a bit without diminishing the quality. A very relaxing instrumental melody that seems to have broad appeal. Worth the listen.
