Monday, April 22: The Obsessed, "Be the Night"

Scott “Wino” Weinrich was apparently feeling a bit friskier than usual (and a “a bit” for Wino was apparently “a lot”) when it came time to record Sacred, because “Be the Night” was 2 minutes of pure swagger, from Wino’s various “yeah”s and greasy solo to the careening drums that quickly began and ended the tune.  For a brand name known for an especially anguished strain of doom metal, the iteration of The Obsessed that reconvened after over 20 years to record Sacred was clearly ready to roll, and even if most of Sacred delivered the tried and true, it was both shocking and refreshing to hear Wino and crew revel in the joy of just plain rocking out.

THE OBSESSED – Gilded Sorrow

Scott "Wino" Weinrich au chant et à la guitare (Spirit Caravan, Place of Skulls, The Hidden Hand) forme avec Mark Laue (basse), John Reese (guitare) et Dave "Dan the Slave" Williams (batterie) en 1977 The Obsessed est un des pionniers américains du Doom Metal, avec Saint Vitus, Trouble ou Pentagram, tous influencés par Black Sabbath.

Des tignasses blanches neiges pour une musique des ténèbres tel est ce « Gilded Sorrow » le cinquième album de The Obsessed, via Ripple Music, a été produit par Frank Marchand, Scott « Wino » Weinrich et Jason Taylor, mixé par Frank Marchand et masterisé par Alan Douches.

Des riffs lacèrent chaque titre d’une marque heavy doom à l’épaisseur d’un cuir dense et tané par une intemporalité sonique. Maitrisant un sens du groove de haute-volée, les chansons sont aussi sombres qu’un couloir de la mort, pétries dans un spleen outrageusement malignité absolue, « Gilded Sorrow » propose 9 titres de rugosités oldschool. Chris Angleberger à la basse et Jason Taylor (KILLA BABES) à la guitare apportent un équilibrage entêtant des soubresauts créatifs du maitre des lieux Wino, avec une alchimie à la lourdeur métallique des eaux saumâtres de cet opus venimeux.

L’on se réfugie dans l’introspection corrosive de ce disque, même quand le corps musical est à l’orage, jusqu’à sentir percer ses cavités de sang sonique, laissant des cohortes de souffle antiques effleurer le feu par son vent pour chasser au loin les excès, entendre le plomb couler dans une amertume violacée de chocs heavy, de contusion doom, de bestialité pure. Saisir sous cet amas de terre nostalgique où Satan fredonne un son mazouté et où un vieux sage motorisé par les ailes de l’enfer chante ces détails qui forment un poème ténébreux tout à la fois.

MOSTRA MERCATO DEL DISCO USATO E DA COLLEZIONE DI PORDENONE E DEL F.V.G.

Dopo aver battuto ogni record con oltre 3500 partecipanti e 150 espositori, torna l’imperdibile appuntamento per tutti gli appassionati del supporto analogico, che anche quest’anno si svolgerà negli spazi della Fiera di Pordenone.

L’appuntamento per il 2024 con la Mostra Mercato del Disco è fissato per sabato 20 e domenica 21 gennaio alla Fiera di Pordenone. Il vinile torna così protagonista nella città friulana dove nel tempo la mostra è cresciuta così tanto da diventare l’evento di riferimento per tutti gli appassionati, battendo ogni record di biglietti venduti (l’anno scorso sono stati superati i 3500 visitatori) e numero di espositori (circa 150 espositori).

I biglietti sono acquistabili su DICE.fm. Disponibili inoltre sullo stesso circuito un numero limitato di biglietti VIP che offrono la possibilità di accedere agli spazi della Fiera con ingresso anticipato, così da poter iniziare la propria ricerca con maggiore tranquillità mezz’ora prima del resto del pubblico, oltre a includere un gadget in omaggio.

Alla Mostra Mercato del Disco ci sarà spazio per espositori provenienti, oltre che da tutta la penisola, anche da Germania, Olanda, Austria, Slovenia, Svezia, Croazia, portando la Mostra Mercato del Disco di Pordenone a livello internazionale. Anche quest’anno la cornice del moderno quartiere fieristico di Pordenone vedrà gli appassionati, i collezionisti, ma anche i semplici curiosi scartabellare le pile di dischi di ogni genere e formato, CD e memorabilia. La musica e la passione per il formato analogico torneranno quindi a fare da aggregatori: ogni anno cresce anche il numero di giovani visitatori, che alla Fiera trovano l’ambiente perfetto per scambiare opinioni e chiedere consigli a collezionisti di larga età ed esperienza. L’evento è organizzato grazie al supporto di Regione FVG, il Comune di Pordenone e Pordenone Fiere.

In attesa della 34ª Mostra Mercato del Disco domenica 14 gennaio si terrà l’evento di presentazione di Wino: The Documentary al Capitol di Pordenone con Scott ‘Wino’ Weinrich, veterano della scena heavy, psych, metal e doom. Biglietti acquistabili su DICE.fm.

Wednesday, June 28: Unorthodox, "Suicide King"

As part of the DC-area doom scene in the ‘90s, Unorthodox was a natural fit for the Hellhound roster, even if the brilliantly titled “Suicide King” charged a bit harder during the intro.  This was otherwise prime doom metal that was expertly played, and perhaps inadvertently revealed the full breadth of Scott “Wino” Weinrich’s influence, as Dale Flood’s vocals couldn’t help but recall the Obsessed.  “Suicide King” was the sort of doom metal track that simply didn’t age, transcending notions of time, place and space in its evergreen approach to massive and cavernous riffing, rumbling percussion and sonorously downbeat vocals.
