I was thrilled to be asked to create the cover art for the new issue of Seed Magazeen. Seed Magazeen is a Risograph printed Zine packed full of activities for kids that help teach them to care for the environment.

Independent Children’s  Publications
Following my tutorial with Maria (18/3/20) I have conducted more extensive research into the independent children’s magazines and publishers that I have sourced and had recommended to me. Although this research is online and therefore isn’t physically accessible to me, these magazines allow me to understand what content is successful in the field of children’s publications as well as giving me a rough idea of layouts, content and pagination to apply to my own outcome.
ANORAK
This publication is clearly very experimental and perhaps the key to the success of this magazine is the fact that it displays a very exciting structure and layout. The magazine is unisex and largely focuses on creativity - much like the outcome I am aiming to produce.

AQUILA
Reviews on the page allow me to understand the perspective of my audience, as there are comments from children and parents alike regarding the magazine. Back issues allow me to understand the contract and basic themes and content of each edition.

Aquila author’s guidelines: https://www.aquila.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/AQUILA-author’s-guidelinesSep2019.pdf
FLYING EYE BOOKS
The product of Nobrow publishing house, FEB focuses on storytelling and non-fiction. Although this differs from my idea, the fundamental principle of creativity and character design found within this publication is core to its success with children, and I will therefore have to consider this within my process and outcome.

ILLUSTORIA
Devised by Joanne Meiyi Chan (published children’s author), the magazine focuses on children’s creativity and interaction and encourages young creatives to publish their work, wether it may be art of literature.

OKIDO
An art and science magazine for kids, with a collaborative series now on Netflix Kids. ‘OKIDO’s philosophy is a simple one: every child is a creative scientist’. The magazine also really focuses on both genders and equal opportunities, which is something that I am passionate to include within my final outcome.

SEED MAGAZEEN
Using art to approach environmental issues in an accessible format for children. “Each issue includes comics, games, interviews and activities that try to engage children with themes based around conservation and the environment, without preaching or being frightening. We launch each new issue with free workshops, that guides them through one of the activities in the magazine, with the aim that they can go on to try it themselves at home.” - Jack Snelling, cofounder. The founders of the magazine are also artists within their own rights, offering me further inspiration for my character designs and book content.

All of these magazines share themes of innovative formats and the desire to inspire children through art and interaction. This research has led me to understand that these are some of the core principles of the field of children’s activity publications and I must therefore ensure that they are included and are evident within my final outcome.
Following this research, I have subsequently sent emails to each magazine in order to collect feedback and suggestions regarding the content and criteria of my book. (All websites sourced on 21/3/20)
