An eight year old girl whose ink black curls bounced around her face pouted. The red-haired pirate who claimed to be an old friend of her grandfather's was teasing her again. Which was admittedly better than how the locals treated her, but still. "You're mean," she sulked, hiding behind Beckman's leg. At least the first mate had been nice to her and would protect her from this terrible captain while Gramps brought up more food and moonshine from the cellar.
“Mean?!”

“Dahahaha!” Beckman shot him a look, but Shanks couldn't help but throw back his head with laughter at the sight.
He squatted down to be at her level and tilted his head to the side to get a look at the girl behind his first mate's leg. The poor thing had been mostly quiet and Shanks hadn't bothered to ask why she lived with him rather than her parents. That could wait until she'd gone off to bed. Or out to play. Or whatever it was that kids did here on Jorus.
He could still remember the day Tomasu had joyfully announced to the crew that he'd had a granddaughter. It seemed so long ago now.
Shanks couldn't help but be impressed by her words though, even if she had to cling to his first mate to get them out. Not every day a kid had the guts to stick up to him. It was good for 'em to do so. He hoped, anyway.
“And what're you gonna do about it, huh? Or 're you just gonna let people push ya around?”

365 Day Movie Challenge (2018) - #169: Halloween 5 (aka Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers) (1989) - dir. Dominique Othenin-Girard
Picking up where I left off with my last film review, Halloween 5 continues the intertwined stories of foster sisters Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris) and Rachel Carruthers (Ellie Cornell), one year after Michael Myers (Don Shanks) returned to Haddonfield and embarked on another of his signature violent rampages. In an intriguing twist, the aftermath of Jamie’s nightmarish encounters at the hands of her evil uncle has resulted in her being mute, which allows Danielle Harris many powerful moments where Jamie must convey her emotions solely through facial expressions and physical gestures. Under the care of Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence), Jamie is recuperating from her trauma by living full-time at a children’s hospital, although she is allowed visits by Rachel and one of Rachel’s friends, Tina Williams (Wendy Kaplan).
After a brief recap at the beginning of the film, covering the events leading to Michael Myers’ “death,” Halloween 5 immediately establishes that Michael survived all those gunshot blasts from the Haddonfield police. After laying low for a year, Michael returns to his hometown for Halloween 1989. Despite the holiday having been banned by the community after so many murders, local teens still get together to wear costumes and party, so it is remarkably easy for Michael to find plenty of new targets for his infinite rage.
In typical slasher fashion, a couple dies shortly after starting to have sex (in a barn, no less), and pretty much everyone else who gets in Michael’s way while he attempts to catch Jamie falls prey to his homicidal impulses. By and large, the scares and gore in Halloween 5 are less impactful than in the franchise’s previous film, and I’m not pleased by how relentlessly harsh Dr. Loomis was toward Jamie; a significant aspect of the plot revolves around her having some kind of telepathic connection with Michael Myers, which Loomis - clearly unfamiliar with the concepts of a “bedside manner” and empathy for traumatized children - constantly bullies the girl into discussing since she's reluctant to share information. Still, Danielle Harris has yet another great showcase here, especially after her character regains the ability to speak and, toward the end, expends quite a bit of energy on screaming her lungs out. (One scene, in which Jamie tries to hide from Michael in a laundry chute, is absolutely terrifying because of Danielle Harris’ commitment to the role.) Special mention also goes to a stomach-churning couple of sequences early in the film, when one female character’s concern at possibly (and, she eventually learns, definitely) being stalked by a killer inside her own house feels almost too realistic.
