Shark fin soup is an expensive delicacy that is eaten in China as well as some Chinese restaurants in America. It can cost anywhere from $300 to $2,000, and all for a bowl of soup! Eating sharks has no nutritional value, and in fact it has been found that humans are at risk of acquiring the neurotoxin BMAA (Holtcamp 2012). This is a compound normally produced by cyanobacteria, and apex predators (like sharks) tend to have high concentrations of this because they eat so much including other predators with high concentrations of BMAA (Holtcamp 2012). It is estimated that 1.4 million tons, or around 100 million individual sharks are killed per year for shark finning (Worm et al. 2013). The practice itself is extremely wasteful and inhumane: illegal fisheries have been found to use sea lion flesh to bait the sharks, and once caught the fins are cut and the shark is discarded to either bleed out or suffocate (Schiller et al. 2015). @oneoceandiving #repost Unlike humans, sharks have teeth that aren’t embedded in their gums (Meyer, 2013). This allows sharks to shed and replace their teeth as they age. The number of teeth a shark will develop and lose throughout their life varies from species to species. Larger pelagic sharks, such as great whites can have over 50,000 teeth though the duration of their ~70-year life (Hamady LL, Natanson LJ, Skomal GB, Thorrold SR, 2014). That many teeth can give people the impression that shark teeth are easily available to us in mass amounts. The truth is, the shiny white teeth commonly sold in stores came from a recently culled shark. The only shark teeth you can get without harming sharks are fossilized teeth that show up on beaches and the seafloor after naturally falling out. Say no to buying shark products! Oceanic whitetip sharks (cacharhinus longimanus) are some of the most widespread sharks. Due to their widespread present they have been caught as bycatch in large numbers throughout history (Compagno 1984, Taniuchi 1990, Bonfil 1994, Castro et al. 1999). Their paddle like fins are used for shark fin soup and are priced high in the international fish trade due to the large size, because of these characteristics these sharks are under a lot of fin fishing pressure and they are not as commonly seen in the wild as they used to be. Amazing job by safety diver @taylork.sea who was able to cut this fishing line off a shark today! Although it’s encouraging to see fishermen cutting their lines to free hooked sharks as the hooks will eventually rust out, the trailing fishing line (especially at this length) can potentially entangle sharks like one of our favorites #SharkIDMsAloha or get snagged on the sea floor/passing objects which can be lethal so we always try our best to trim lines on passing sharks or cut them free entirely if possible. Mahalo to all of our recent guests and supporters that enable us to not only take people out to learn about and see the sharks, but also monitor them for entanglement/other threats to help give back to them whenever we can. 💙🦈#ItsTheirOcean Want to learn more? On our 8am research dive wesaw “Bully” the most confident, male Sandbar shark around. He pushed his was through several much larger Galapagos sharks to make sure we knew he was there. We can identify individual sharks by scars and markings matched in our database. Have you ever tried to hide in plain sight? Sharks do it all the time! Sharks are countershaded, meaning that they have dark backs contrasted with white bellies (Reif, 1985). When looking from above, sharks’ dark colorings conceal them in the dark water, while, from below, their white underbellies blends with the bright, light surface (National Wildlife Federation). Every shark species has varied coloring with different camouflaging effects tailored to their environments and functions. Whale sharks (galeocerdo cuvier), for example, have bluish-gray backs decorated with a white spotted pattern; this unique coloring replicates the appearance of sunlight sparkling through water. In additional examples, both blue and mako sharks have blue backs that camouflage them in their open-sea environments (Helfman & Burgess, 2014).
