What does this image make you think of? It made me think of: Balance. Perspective. Gratitude. Forever grateful for each of these moments and interactions. Makes it easier and harder in different ways as we are now currently filming death in international fishing markets 💔 This Image by @Juansharks also made me think of our role within the natural ecosystem, to care and look out for it, as we are connected, it cycles back. It also made me think of the symbol of Yin and Yang. “In Ancient Chinese philosophy, yin and yang is a Chinese philosophical concept that describes how obviously opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another.” Photo: @juansharks Diving with @pelagicdivefuvahmulah Wetsuit: @xcelwetsuits coming soon Fins: @cressi1946 Conservation benefit “Fins to help save fins.” Available now. Science side of tumblr please help
So, while i was depressed with the state of everything and my own incompetency I came up with idea. Yah know how Chinese and eastern Asian traditional medicine is single handedly taking down the largest animal species or useless body parts? (cuz if not please go read sum stuff and come back its an issue that should be known more at least if not addressed more).
This goes from tiger body parts being used as charms, to Shark fin being notably the height of luxury wedding soups as well as sold as a cancer cure, to the obvious ivory trade because people just think its neat, to both the horn of rhinos and the scale of a pangolin, both the same keratin substances in nails and hair, being worth way more than its weight in gold. The poaching (and finning) industries have become so profitable that they end up controlling entire governments, with shark fining so lucrative that it was once secretly backed by the Costa Rica and Ecuador, fishing allowed in the migratory shark hotspot that is the Galapagos in 2007.
Conservation around poached species is arguably the most difficult issues in the field, with the demand and price the product going up with each kill, every second. One approach to this is to remove the valuable part from the animal, making it worthless. They dye rhino horns pink, making it valued so much les its not targeted (usual). So, my question is, instead of destroying the supply and increasing the demand, why cant we do the opposite.
Can we grow Rhino horns, pangolin scales, maybe even ivory and shark fins, in a lab with stem cells?
Before I get laughed out of the room, understand that I know nothing about stem cells besides that they can grow tissue outside of a body, and that they are a huge part of medical research with organ replacement. I also know that it, being a relatively new and unknown field of research, that it is REALY expensive. But as the technology and knowledge on it progresses, can we maybe get to a point where it is easier for poachers to get an artificially grown horn from a lab than a month long campaign across 4-8 different nations with military helicopters and machine guns to find one bull with 7 pounds for horn, then chainsaw its head and transport to China? Could we set up a lab that would grow all this, but make it distinct enough that the buyer wont find out its not fresh poached? (they would one hundred percent do this, we are talking about selling hundreds of pounds of matted hair and nail clipping for more than most of us will ever make)
sorry so long someone plz respond. Please show this to anyone who knows about stem cell research/ growing new organs.

Shark fin soup ISN'T a lot of things... It certainly IS a disgrace though. 🤑🙄 . The dish originated about 1000 years ago with Song dynasty of China as a delicacy in the royal court. Over centuries it remained being popular, but only reserved for the elites. However, with the household incomes growing since the 19th century, so did the appetite for the prestigious soup... 🍜 . Fast forwarding to current age and between 72-100 millions of sharks are killed every year to fulfill the insane demand for their fins. The soup is a very expensive, traditional element of Chinese banquets and weddings, crucial to showing status and wealth. Ka-chiiing! 💰 . If people are so crazy for it, this soup must be phenomenal right? Not really 😕 Shark fin has literally no taste, it only provides texture, while the flavour actually comes from other ingredients... Actually many forward-thinking Chinese cooks around the world are coming up with substitutes for the fin and guess what - no one can taste the difference! . So the fin must have some medicinal qualities? It's an aphrodisiac, cures cancer and fixes your marriage problems? Of course not. It does have a lot of mercury though, which is obviously poisonous. 😳 . Legislatory changes across the world are extremely important (check out @stopfinningeu if you're a EU citizen), but what needs to change first and foremost is the demand. Say no to shark fin soup on the menu during weddings, parties, tasting, etc. Your voice and telling other about it matters! 📣 . 👉 Follow @freshnsaltyeco to get a clue in the blue! . . . #freshnsalty #clueintheblue #oceandecade #stopfinningeu #stopsharkfinning #sharkfinsoup #sharkfinning #protectthesharks #sharkfin #sharks #oceandecade #sharkeducation #sharksarefriends #sharksofinstagram #savethesharks #oceaneducation #marinewildlife #animaleducation #protecttheocean #oceanawareness #savetheseas #marinelifematters #savemarinelife #oceanconservancy #oceanminded #oceanconservation #sciart #oceanlovers #oceanlife #marinelife https://www.instagram.com/p/CPODzfbB5-H/?utm_medium=tumblr

It's August 30th, 🦈 International Whale Shark Day. On this day, we celebrate the whale shark – the largest species of fish on the planet, growing to a length of 40 feet or more and weighing in at as much as 47,000 pounds. Whale sharks are filter-feeders who eat mostly plankton and small squid and fish. Their enormous appetites demand up to 44 pounds of food daily.
Unlike most other sharks, the whale shark has a slow and gentle demeanor. It usually prefers to swim in shallow depths, which makes it extremely easy for people to catch it. They are continuously hunted for sport, fins, and meat. The whale shark market has led to a 50% decrease in the fish’s population since 1950, which in turn has caused it to be placed on the endangered species list. Their declining numbers negatively impact our planet's marine environments by allowing plankton and algae populations to grow unchecked. So you see, it's for our own sake, not just theirs, that we must help this gentle giant not only survive, but thrive. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

(Please take a moment to read the full caption, it’s appreciated ❤️)
I created this little cartoon-esque sketch back in 2015. Over the past four years, this illustration has been seen and shared by millions of people across the world. That’s amazing since this piece has one real purpose; to create an emotional response and open the dialogue about shark finning (which needs to end). Unfortunately, millions of people don’t know “Sharktopia” due to the art being shared without artist credit and from too many sources to get back to the original. My unique artist signature has always been on it (my name; Caiti)...but I wasn’t in the habit of writing “Sharktopia” on my art until recently. Honestly, I always thought my signature would be enough. Understandably, my name as my signature (which I’ve used for 20+ years!) wasn’t leading anyone back to my little world of Sharktopia, where I have even more awareness artwork, numerous pieces about shark finning, and 50+ free non-profit conservation coloring pages, etc etc. Thus, I’ve added my dear “Sharktopia” to this sketch.
🔥Now, I’m asking you to consider spreading this drawing far and wide with artist credit. Spread the word that shark finning needs to end. We NEED sharks alive and thriving if we want to ensure our own future as well. 70% of our oxygen comes from healthy Oceans...which can only remain healthy with the help of sharks; a vital and irreplaceable keystone species. Despite how much we need them alive, more than 100 MILLION sharks are slaughtered every single year. Our Oceans will fall when extinction comes...and my dear friends and followers...we are witnessing ‘the end’ grow nearer every single day. It’s not a time to tone down the dramatic vibe. It’s time to yell louder, call for action, and do what we can. Every moment counts. [www.sharktopia.org]

Happy international Whale Shark Day! I LOVE Whale sharks! Please help save these harmless gentle giants please join the effort to spread awareness about the plight of sharks and their dwindling populations due to terrible things like shark finning, bycatch, and entanglement. Join the movement to #HelpSaveSharks by supporting efforts around the world to stop the killing of sharks for their fins for #SharkFinSoup and wasteful practices like #SharkFishing and please, if you eat seafood put in the little extra effort to make sure it’s not coming from industrial commercial fisheries that kill between 7-10 other animals for every one targeted fish they catch (mostly sharks but also sea birds, dolphins, whales, sea turtles, and more.) or go Vegetarian, even just as often as possible :) All efforts add up to positive change and lives saved. Wishing you a beautiful day and lifetime of incredible encounters that will be more common if marine species and significant areas are protected 💙 For more ways to #HelpSaveSharks and #SaveTheOcean check out my website. #WhaleShark photo by my ❤️🦈 @juansharks https://www.instagram.com/p/CTNJaTwFYyN/?utm_medium=tumblr
