Kal has a crush on his new babysitter and after watching her closely Henry has to now all he has to do is ask her out...Simple right?
Warnings: Swearing, Fluff, Slight Angst
Request: That’s so great! I was thinking maybe one where introvert chubby reader looks after Kal on set, when Henry’s filming. She and Kal become great friends, are always together, they cuddle, play, and nap together, etc. Henry might’ve secretly snapped a few pics of them. He’s happy that there’s someone else taking good care of his bestie.  Kal loves Henry but misses the reader when they’re back home. When they return to set, he expects her to be there for Kal but turns out she’s not working out there anymore. They thought her to be redundant and too much of a loner. This affects her because she always feels more happy around animals as she always wanted a dog but never really could afford it. Sorry for the stupidly long request…

You smiled as your charge ran around happily with the kong toy pouncing and shaking his head the rubber dome slipped from his mouth and bounced unpredictably across the floor. It was a kong original that was a rubber 'bee hive' shape hollow and stuffed  full of one of those ham and cheese sandwich paste. He seemed to love it as he darted around happily pinning it every now and then trying to fish out the treat. You loved this job! It was incredible you literally got paid to snuggle walk play and snuggle with the sweetest dog you have ever met in your life...His owner wasn't to bad either...well now at least. You sighed crossing your ankles and fanned yourself at the thought of the bears dad...A bear of a man himself, or wolf should you say. Was stunning he was a salt... Definitely a salt. You watched again as Kal frantically chased the kong as it rolled out of his paws. You were the proud baby sitter of Kal Cavill probably the sweetest Akita anyone would ever find. Currently on set watching the pup bounce about trying to paw at the pesky kong flipping and rolling away threw the scatty motions. "Wow Kal-ee-bear that's some shit paw eye coordination baby boy..." you giggled as he snorted still patting at the rubber and moved laying down against your legs stuffing his snout at the wide opening still trying to devour the snack of cheese spread. you tried giving him snack enrichment each day to calm him down before delivering him back to his dad. "Oh I'm sooo sorry your majesty~" you jumped as Henry came up behind you. "And what has his royal highness up to today I wonder?" He crossed his arms across his chest. you flushed flinching and clamming up at him as he stood to the side of you both with a grin. You waved to Kal who was gruffing at the kong growing more irritated when he had to work for his treat. "He er.. Is huffy over the kong....He couldn’t catch it and now he has, he has to work for his cheese" Henry laughed out loud at that plopping down beside you. You flushed, you admit at first things had been rocky between you and Henry. But now he seemed to hover a lot more he wont just come and whisk Kal away at the end of his scenes he'd stay and try to chat...He for some reason wanted to get to know you. You'd been confused unsure what to make of the hunk trying to get to know you. You’d been frightened and withdrawn but he didn’t give up he spent a lot of time just sitting with you talking about his day. He didn't seem to mind you were quiet in fact he seemed to like having someone to listen to him. You sighed wistfully realizing you'd let your shyness let this chance pass you by. You'd had so many chances to talk to him properly to admit your feelings to him but you hadn't your shy personality pulled you back. Today was your final day here sitting with Kal and you were devastated you'd come to have feelings for the big bear...and his owner more then you should have...More than you cared to admit. It was silly but you'd harbored a crush on the man and for a few months and had been debating on how to show but it was hard for someone like you...To introverted for your own good...Not that you'd ever be able to open up much to people. Animals on the other hand were completely different ,you preferred animals to people and you think Henry could tell but he was stubborn ,but then he had been stubborn since day one.

When you'd first met he was worried you didn't have the strength to look after or control such a big dog...Kal was small for an Akita but he was by no means weak, he has had Henry over a few times in the past which is not to be laughed at. You remembered it well the first time he saw you he'd be the first to admit he was a bit of an ass...Well he was a complete asshole to be honest. Your mind wandered to your first ever conversation with the man.
"So did you realize he's an Akita? He needs a lot of exercise and attention...I need someone who can keep up with him and handle him when in a boisterous mood...not someone he can run rings around and overpower" you squinted at him and grunted he seemed put out and very full of himself; something he’d later regret. You'd took a deep breath and smiled trying your best not to snap or cower...His scowl was intimidating. "Yes I do...Look if I can help calm down a scared shire and pull it to a halt, and hold still a bull by its horns for tagging I think I can handle a little Akita" he had grunted at you in disbelief crossing his arms and scoffed at you. "Oh really? You did all that?" You growled at him getting a bee in your bonnet his attitude was getting right up your nose now you didn't want to anger him but at the same time you needed this job it'd pay for your van and get you up and running. "I was training to be a country vet so yes I did all that anything else Mr Cavill? A resume? Certificates I have them with me..I even know canine cpr and how to remove ticks if you wanted to Know that to" he huffed and turned to the others present.
"Fine she will do but one incident and she's not watching him that’s final I don't let just anyone look after him" you smiled confidently but inside you were bricking it hoping you didn't come across as a nasty person you wasn't...You were just in a tricky spot and you needed money...You loved dogs they were going to be your new career so this was a perfect fit for you...No customers or people just you babysitting a big ass fluffy bear. That had been the only time you'd really clapped back at him and you were proud it was rare for you to stand up for yourself.

He'd gotten copies of all your documents you'd shown to prove you were capable...when he said he wouldn't trust just anyone with his four legged son, he meant it and you understood. You'd be the same with you own puppy, as much as you wanted one of your own finances were tight and once your business was open you wouldn't have much time spare for a pup of your own. Some of the others had rolled their eyes when they saw Henry hovering like a mother hen over you and Kal for the first week. They had complained to one another expressing that Kal was just a dog he would be fine. They just didn't understand. But as it turns out you had somehow passed his requirements and he had backed off trusting you to look after his son. You gathered that he checked you out fully and realized you had done all that you said, pulled out of veterinary school deciding the larger animals wasn't for you and were now focusing on grooming. And he had but that wasn't the whole reason he had been spying on you and Kal even when you didn't realize it.

It had started when he came to apologize. You'd never know but he felt like a dick and had come to apologize for his attitude but instead found himself floored watching from a short distance you were cuddling Kal smoothing his fur raking your fingers through it giggling and kissing him every so often pulling clumps of shedding fur out of him. "Oh my! baby boy look at all this? you'll be a stone lighter once all this is out talk about a crash diet....Wish I could drop a few dress sizes just by brushing my hair" that comment had hit Henry's chest with a dull cold thud. You were beautiful why would you say that about yourself? sure you were thicker...but thicker was better in his opinion he loved curves the idea of luscious soft curves filling his palms mad him swoon! He watched as you giggled wrestling Kal to his other side before repeating. He was surprised at how much he liked watching you play with him it was nice seeing Kal so relaxed and coddled. Henry sometimes felt guilty bringing Kal on set he couldn't give him much attention when he was working so that was where dog sitters come in someone o watch him and keep Kal occupied when Henry was working. "You'll feel so much better after this...I will bring my brushes out tomorrow and give you a good tidy up! you must be so hot love..." Henry laughed as the calm didn't last long at the word brush Kal got up excitedly pouncing and licking your face. You giggled loudly as he pushed you back standing over you yipping but you didn't throw him off instead wrapping your arms around him and rolled taking the Akita clean of his feet pinning the large dog to the floor and attacking him with tummy scratches and raspberries. Henry's heart melted it was nice to see someone playing with him properly no holds bar! rough housing with an Akita was no mean feet but you managed. It was then he leaned back watching you a small smile on his lips you took your job seriously and Henry was seeing a different side to you. He had definitely misjudged you he felt even more of an asshole now.

The final hurdle you jumped was when he saw Kal mouthing at your forearm playfully keeping the arm snug between his jaws and pulling trying to tug you back down as you tried to get up. Henry panicked heart stopping for a second as you hissed a little, people can perceive mouthing as biting. Before Henry could even think he moved a few steps forward readying to charge down and explain the behavior and pray you didn't take the incident further. But before he could take another step you had taken care of it and you didn't freak out like others would have in the jaws of a large dog. You simply calmed the situation down nicely and carefully with ear rubs making Kal release you and tilt his head trying to make you rub harder onto the ear. "You got such a big mouth Kal my love! mouthing like that huh? Just one overgrown puppy~" you finished by laughing and settling down onto the ground with him.Then pulled Kal to face you kissing his snout making him go all soppy again. Henry watched dumbstruck as you peeled back his lip and shook your head. "Lets had a look at your nashers...Oh? Whats this Pooh bear? look at those teeth! And they call your daddy a wolf huh? And your not brushing them are you my little fluff ball? hmm? well we will start that tomorrow~ oh yesh we will!...You like the sound of that huh? brush these pearly whites and make your breath smell all fresh! all it'll cost you is more kisses!! yesh it will baby boy! good bear such a good pooh bear!" Henry smoothed back the wig he was wearing heaving a deep sigh relaxing with a chuckle. Yeah that hadn't put you off at all now his dog had a fucking dentist to. Henry took a moment to calm down as he realized you'd known what you were doing. The fear for all dog owners was someone saying they were bit! but in that moment he was reassured you knew a lot more about dogs then your papers said ,you handled it very well. Kal had a habit of mouthing he always had since a puppy, sometimes he even falls asleep with one of Henry's hands in his mouth just holding it sometimes suckling like a tiny pup again...It was rare now but it happened almost using his hand or fingers like a like a toddler with a soother. But when he was excited he would mouth a little harder it was pack behavior but to anyone who didn't know they called it a bite. Kal seemed to like you and you handled him beautifully.

After that Henry had meant to back off but...He couldn't seeing how you'd got Kal wrapped around your little finger had intrigued him...He was a strong believer in dogs having that sixth sense for people they could sniff out the bad ones. Kal had fallen head over paws for you and each morning got in a little tizzy waiting for you to come pick him up prancing at the door as you got closer. Henry loved how much pride you took in looking after kal and how far you went you'd all but adopted the bear. Fuck you were only supposed to walk him and play with him a few hours a day but you groomed him, brushed his fur and teeth daily even clipped his claws and filed them you pampered the dog with massages after his runs new toys and enrichment treats then had long ass naps wrapped around him. You were a nanny, packmate, cook, dentist stylist, nail technician massuse and all round mother to Kal and the bear loved it lapping up the attention and what Henry believed to be genuine love. 
He still watched but now for a different reason he wasn't worried about kal...He watched you, it had only taken him three weeks to become completely besotted with you he wanted to spend as much time with you as he could. He loved everything about you, the way your laugh made kal go crazy and lather you with kisses how you'd roll around with him no qualms about getting dusty and smothered with fur and the way you played and snuggled kal like he was your own pup kissing him and giving him the love he needed. If he was honest he adored the way you'd gone about it. Most dog sitters just sat on their phones with kal on the lead beside them and walked him when once a day. You mothered him and spoiled him rotten. And Henry loved and loathed it...Why were you so comfortable with kal and not him? Sire hed been an ass at the start but you were all past that now...Henry wanted some of you attention now but you withdrew when he was there. It was maddening.

It was a week after he had seen you deal with Kals mouthing that you'd approached him he almost expected the worse thinking you were going to quit saying kal was to much but instead you'd asked if kal was allergic to anything. Henry to be honest was stumped, he'd never though of kal having allergies. He was concerned and began running all the worst scenarios in his head of what you'd noticed or what had happened. But you had shyly calmed him down saying you wanted to get Kal some treats and chews but didn't want to cause any medical issues. Henry can honestly say his heart had swelled at that. Henry in that moment had developed a full blown crush on you. He was floored that you'd take his bears welfare so seriously that you'd asked permission to give him treats. He had stuttered out that you could give him what ever that he didn't have any allergies and you'd grinned wide then began gushing over these strange yak milk chews you wanted to get him and a deer antler? Henry just smiled laughing as you forgot who and where you was getting yourself excited.
"Oh my god this is gonna be fun! I've never been able to get this stuff I don't have a dog but now with kal I can spoil him rotten thank you Henry!" And with that said nearly every day his boy came home with a new toy or treat. Henry found it cute especially when you'd given him a little yellow squeaky teddy, Henry didn't think it would last two mineuts normally kal ripped soft teddies to shreds but this one...For some reason wasn't chewed ever not even the eyes ,sure Kal would bite it on the squeaker normally early in the mornings to wake Henry up but it was a teddy he just carried around with him and slept on. He couldn't sleep with out it tucked under his chin!

As time went on you found yourself having small awkward conversations with Henry he seemed to just want you to open up, to talk to him and get along. You wanted to but it was hard for you he was this huge hot alpha witcher male and you were a small dumpy thing. You didn't want to get attached to him, didn't want your crush to get out of hand when you knew there was no chance...He'd never go for someone like you slowly your thought began getting darker and more upsetting luckily they disappeared when kal nudged you almost knocking you over as you retied your laces he was waiting for you to hurry up it was time for his daily walk/run. You soon found yourself jog running along the trail with kal as he created wanting to go faster you panted and grunted at him waving your arms around as he pulled nearly having you off your feet. "Kal! I can't go faster!!! I'm fat haven't you noticed?! fucking lard asses can't got faster we have like three gears!" he barked at you as if to argue you scoffed. "Yes I know your daddy goes faster but I cant!" again he barked and yipped at you eager to go sprinting "No! absolutely not! I'm not letting you off again...Remember the squirrel? You promised to come back young man! and you lied I nearly had a fucking heart attack!" he yipped again tapping the floor prancing a typical kal tantrum brewing. "Nu uh! you did this if you'd behaved and not ran off like a race horse then you'd be let off and be frolicking in the woods like a pooh bear! But no you were a nonce!" he stamped again and moved capturing the lead in his mouth and pulled starting a game of tug making you swear and quickly hold it with two hands and lean back as he started bouncing back growling playfully. "Kal you little shit stop! no no don't-KAL?!" you growled and dug your heels in pulling back as he growled now wagging his tail at the new game of tug. "Kal Cavill you stop being a little brat this instant! I mean it or no peanut butter!...Yes that got you attention didn't it?....Good boy, right now thanks to you little paddy we are going back now see? You play up and we go home....Just you wait until I tell your daddy how spoiled your acting." he whined and flopped down you dropped your jaw at him scratching your head. "Wait what? kal no stop it-really? your really are a sulky little shit sometimes pooh bear....Kal come on up" you moved pulling the lead but he didn't budge you cried out in frustration. Kal just smiled panting at you making you laugh despite your annoyance. "How can I not move you?! putting my weight in it you should at least budge! I how're you doing this?...." you moved and sat beside him and curled over him trying to pick him up but nope he was not going anywhere. you sighed and sat next to him out of breath. "Kal come on mate! cut me some slack...I'm not fit like your daddy and if you wont listen to your recall then I can't let you off..." you moved a hand digging your fingers int the fur massaging him then leaned down kissing his snout he moved sitting up seeing you were upset. "You know I wish I was...Fitter then maybe he'd look at me or-or I'd have the confidence to talk to him back but..Yeah men like him don't like us plus sizes...Oh don't look at me like that kal there's no hiding the fact I'm a fucking chunk!...No matter how much I like him it'd never happen..." you stood up and kal followed licking at your fingers by your side you smiled patting his head. "Lets get back...And I lied you can have your peanut butter I'm sorry I said you couldn't it was mean...But only if you keep that little crush thing quiet okay? Good boy!, you keep that secret for me bubby" he jumped up happily you had no doubt this dog understood every single word you said to him.

Henry had made it his mission to get one date by the end of filming...If only he wasn't this shy every time he tried you'd flush blinking up at him and he'd freeze forgetting his previous thoughts and just star mind going blank. And like a coward he'd stutter out a thank you for seeing to kal and run off tail between his legs. One time; the seventh time...But he wasn't counting, he came over psyching himself up. 'Just one date just say hey your good with kal and I think your really cute and want to take you out...Or just a basic lets have dinner' he nodded to himself and smiled fisting his hands by his side and took a few deep breaths steeling himself as he made his way to a small shaded area just off set and frowned...What was? was Kal laying on you?....He was! Henry snuck up behind you hearing the bear snort in his sleep and slowly stretch out one front leg across you before sighing loudly and relaxing again. You were laying flat on your back in the grass. from what Henry could tell Kal at one point had been next to you but had rolled over in his sleep tummy flat against your side head laying heavy on your soft tummy one paw stretched out over your waist, his back legs straddling your hip from the side.  Your hand was tucked in his mouth you were both sound asleep. Kal was hugging you and Henry couldn't help feeling a little jealous he wanted to do that...He wanted to hug you...He was being out done by his own dog...Henry smiled and took in the sight. He wanted to see this more often he really needed to ask you out ...He needed to get his ass in gear time was ticking. He moved quickly looking left and right before subtly snapping a few shots you'd be none the wiser to him having a new background on his phone. He quickly tucked his phone away and sat beside you leaning back on his hands and just admired the sight drawing his eyes over your form and flushed a bright red noting your top had rose resting just below your bust... kal had somehow nudged it up, Henry had to chuckle at the thought his pup was really putting the moves on you. If only Henry could be that brave. You moved groaning blinking you were hot...So hot what the fuck? had you fell asleep? Shit. You frowned feeling a weight on your tummy you flexed your fingers they were? What the fuck why are they warm....And wet your stomach was damp to....Eww!? What the hell- your being fucking finger sucked!?! confused you gasped and jolted tipping your head up. Fully alert and blinked a few times looking around then focused looking down and giggled. Kal was dead asleep passed out on your tummy somehow he had sucked your hand into his mouth and was trying to suckle on it like a tiny puppy. You smiled and sighed relieved that it was just a silly pooh bear and not some scary ass fuck tard moving your other hand up to stroke the sleeping pups head giggling when he twitched and snorted like a piggy and kicked a back leg out. "Oh my god that's so cute~" you jumped hearing a deep chuckle beside you and saw Henry sitting watching. Instantly you froze unsure what to do or say flushing and gulping trying to remain calm, sensing your discomfort he smiled kindly then nodded to kal. "Done it since he was a pup...Like a proper baby only ever done it with me before though think you may have become his new favorite human~" you flushed lightly and tried wriggling out from under Kal but stopped when he groaned and clamped down on the fingers in his mouth. You chuckled you were not moving anytime soon bot with out upsetting the bear, you shrugged to Henry who laughed quietly again shaking his head.
"I'm afraid you are now trapped here with me until the bear decides to let go~" you blinked flushing even more as his gaze bore into you. You looked back wanting to at least sit up a bit Henry was quick to intervene and shuffled closer sitting side on crossed legged and slipped the elevated knee below our head you flushed when he cleared his throat and his cheeks became pink.
"I...Err your-Its my dogs fault and I..." you blinked slowly and lowered your head to rest on the knee your. He smirked at you feeling proud f himself being able to pull this off somehow.
"I-I Henry if I get to heavy just say...Don't want to give you a dead leg or something...." he frowned a dark look his eyes going dark making you quiver slightly your insecurity rearing its ugly head a small voice telling you your crushing him. He placed a hand to your shoulder. "Your not heavy Honestly I don't even feel you there...It'd take around six of you before I'd even feel anything!" You flushed brightly but said nothing, he must just be saying that he was polite...To polite to tell you your fat. After a few minuets of silence and Henry berating himself he cleared his throat and motioned to Kal still snoring away, his voice lowering making your insides quiver. "Stolen my own pup I knew you'd be trouble~" you swallowed and smiled shyly up at him shaking your head at him with an impish grin. "N-no...He just likes me I think....He is a good boy you should be really proud of him the best boy I have ever looked after" Henry nodded thanking you then looked down at Kal still happily snoring. "And you the best babysitter he has had~ hands down I'm really impressed...I was wrong I never did apologize for being such an asshole when we met" You were all about loosing your mind trapped here under kal ,who would throw a fit if you moved him. "No no..I understand he is your special boy and a energetic little man I can understand the concern someone large and unfit showing up" he grunted and frowned moving the hair from your face making you squeak.
"Stop that! Your a beautiful full figured woman there's nothing wrong with that!.... and for the record it wasn't that at all that made me worry...Your small and I was afraid Kal would have you over and break a bone or something...Kal has he me over many times in the past....Either way I was wrong my worry is no excuse to be rude and I'm sorry" You flushed as Henry slowly eyed your form as he spoke, his blues glittering with something you'd never seen directed at you before but it was gone before you could decipher it. He watched unblinkingly at you finally you smiled and nodded to him breathing out a quick thank you, he grinned and moved a hand stroking kal patting his side softly. "But as for this boy goes I think he more then likes you...He has taken a shine to you...Think he has a crush~ not that I blame him as I said your a very lovely woman" you blinked smiling wider and somehow going a brighter red managed to slip your hand out of the bears jaws and wiped it on your tshirt using the moment to tug it back down. "You-you don't mean that I'm...Just ...Yeah" Henry frowned at you not liking the tone you used to speak about yourself. He went to argue further but grunted a little annoyed as Kal choose that moment to stir making you look away. You watched thankful for the bear giggling softly as the dog moved up off you stretching and yawning then blinked at his dad as if you say 'what?' you moved and kissed his head softly "Come on sleeping beauty time to go home I'm sure you can nap with your daddy when you get back" Henry chuckled as Kal huffed getting up and standing beside him. Henry wanted to linger, to ask you out to do something but any courage he had was gone the moment he had you laid in his lap...It was like a kid wanting something for so long and once he had it he didn't know what to do with it. He moved standing and held out his hand to help you up you froze  and gulped smiling nervously, as strong as he might be you'd have him over and it'd embarrass you to much. Last thing you wanted your crush to know is just how fucking heavy you were. But the man didn't give you much choice as he snatched your hand dragging you up and you were amazed he didn't even lean back or grunt nothing! just pulled you straight up off the floor like it was nothing and you swooned. Henry kicked himself for days over not correcting you. You were amazing and kind and funny and he'd do anything to go out on a date with you....Apart from over come his own bashfulness that is. he wanted to show you how pretty you were to him how much he'd grown to care for you just from watching you with kal but he chickened out yet again.

You smiled moving forward to Kal already getting tearful snuggling him tightly saying your good bye running your nose through his fur Henry's heart clenched when he saw you getting upset he just wanted to wrap you up in his arms and hug you tell you how he felt but no...It wasn't fair to spring his crush on you on the last day...He should have told you sooner, swept you off your feet taken you out wined and dined you. But he hadn't and now he had to say good bye without even giving it a try, the only constellation was that he'd ask for you back next season. He watched sorrowfully at your tears Kal licked them away and you kissed his snout. "Now you listen to me pooh bear you behave..you hear me you be a good boy for you daddy and stop chewing them claws! you have a lovely set of claws and your going to ruin them and get stinky breath if you carry on!" you quickly stood up and Henry pulled you in for a quick hug. "I-er...I'm...Th-thank you for being so good with him he hasn't been this taken care off well ever I don't think!" you smiled wiping at your eye going red your heart was crumbling as you took your last few moments with him. You’d failed to keep your feelings at bay and now you were going to pay dearly for it. "No-your to kind....You do a brilliant job...I-it was fun good luck with the press tour" the conversation came to a screeching halt as you both debated telling one another but in the end you didn't each to scared. You’d turned and left tears trailing down your face once out of sight you held your head in your hands and had a good old cry. You felt ridiculous miserable and very very sorry for yourself. But whats done is done...Or not done shall we say you left shortly after needing to be at home there was a litre tub of vanilla ice cream calling your name.

It wasn't until Henry got home he let it sink in he wasn't going to see you anymore. He broke down cursing and kicking out in a very uncharacteristic manner 'you were such a fucking coward! you should have told her'....He should have grown a back bone and asked you out but no...He held himself back yet again! over the next months he had stewed regrets piling, he replayed all the times he could of just asked you out, all the times when he had to admit his feelings the list got longer  each day. He missed you Kal missed you...The teddy you bought him was with him each time he slept no matter where Kal would wander off getting the teddy and used it as a pillow.
He'd sometimes just sit in his bed with it blinking at Henry, Kal wanted to know where you were he wanted to see you again. Sometimes he would bring it up to him and drop it nudging the stuffed bear to Henry with a sad look whining pitifully like 'wheres mama?' that is what Henry had ended up calling you...In a short few months you'd more of less become Kal's mother. You dotted on him and he you....It was Henry who fucked up! and boy did he feel guilty seeing Kal so upset he had even tried hiding the teddy a few times wanting his cheerful bear back but no that had been a big mistake Henry had left the room for a few moments and came back to a hell of a mess Kal ripping the place up looking for the toy almost panic. Henry had to give it back and since then hadn't got within three feet of it Kal guarded it with his life. Henry sighed he was angry at himself if he'd opened his mouth then you'd be here visiting at least! He could of tried could of build something with you but no Henry had been a coward. and he would not be making that same mistake again!  luckily filming was starting again next week so he would see you again! he'd been telling Kal that they were going to see you both again it was nice seeing Kal get all excited he had been depressed.

And that was why is was all the more heartbreaking when he got on set and you wasn't there. Henry was pissed, he had been gearing up getting himself ready to see you again but you wasn't here...Everyone he asked said they hadn't seen you then it finally came out that no one was hired for Kal this time. You were a victim of your own success, Kal had been so good last time that it was decided the money could be spent elsewhere. It broke his heart he wanted so desperately to see you to finally ask you out for Kal to cheer up they were both love struck and both heart broken and depressed. After a week Henry had finally stopped pushing to find you resigning himself to the fact he wasn't going to get his second chance and he just hopped Kal would snap out of it...He doubted it though Akitas were revered for their loyalty and intelligence Henry wouldn't forget so the likelihood of Kal forgetting was slim. he sat at the table sighing he was down everyone could tell neither Henry or Kal had the spring in their step they once had.

Everyone knew the change in the two was because you hadn't been there Joey, Anya and Freya were at a loss unsure how to make him feel better that is until Freya asked around the local village. She remembered Henry mentioning that you were saving up to be a dog groomer and she said something in passing about an Akita in need of a good brush in the local shop and bingo! The shop owner smiled and gushed over the new mobile groomers, a local lady who had just set up shop. The woman had rushed to the counter getting a business card and little leaflet. Freya wasn't sure how but she just knew it'd be Henry's bou. She was excited thanking the woman before rushing back to set.
Once on set Freya made her way right through it searching for a down trodden Henry. She was determined to help him out...And keep a secret at the same time, she wanted it to be a surprise. Finally she found him sitting at a covered table picking at his food Kal beside him resting his chin on the bench beside him.
"Henry? I have something that might cheer Kal up~" he looked to Freya with a confused look Joey and Anya frowned to noting the sly grin on her face. Henry placed his fork down wiping his hand and took a small purple business card and matching purple leaflet. He scowled reading it. Mama bears puppy spa?. He frowned looking up at Freya who smiled knowingly.
"I found it in the village shop window...Just trust me phone up, you can email to see? and the prices are reasonable...I think get them to come give Kal a quick once over might cheer him up having a little pamper" Henry sighed looking to the scruffy boy he was shedding again so maybe a wash cut and blow dry would help cheer him up...and stop him from waking up with fur in his mouth.
"Thanks...I think I might mobile one I take it?" Freya smirked nodding to him Henry was just to out of it to even
"Gets raving reviews...A local lady I think but seriously just treat him!" he smiled thanking her again deciding he might as well he had noticed Kal chewing his claws again but hadn't got the nail clippers with him and if they were going to come out here might as well get the works done. So that's what he did asked them to come out the next day as he had it off they booked as a last minuet. And that was where he now found himself sitting by the entrance of set waiting for a big purple mobile dog groomers. He was so engrossed in looking out for the van he didn't notice Freya Anya and Joey gathered a few feet behind him watching. Henry sighed petting Kal and wiping off the shedding fur letting it fall to the floor in tufts.
"God Kal you really do need this huh buddy? must be horrible going from silky daily brushed fur to now just once a week" He smiled rubbing Kal’s back dragging his fingers through the fur.

Henry frowned as suddenly Kal lifted his head sniffing then quicker then Henry could react he sprinted off across the makeshift car park Henry jumped up shouting for him but it was to late Kal was off the dog ignored him running around the corner and down the long track. Henry’s heart clenched and his blood ran cold as Kal disappeared out of sight then he heard it large truck skid to a stop Henry screamed Kal’s name tears already streaming fearing the worst as he rounded the corner  drawing attention as he sprinted as fast as his legs could carry him and almost collapsed in relief he was okay! Kal was okay he wasn't hit. He was pacing tail going ballistic and jumping whining excitedly yipping and barking loud and frantic scratching at the door barking and creating a huge fuss.
The door opened just as Henry skidded to a stop sliding on his knees in the gravel hugging Kal who wasn't interested in the slightest still trying to jump up at the woman? He looked up trying to see just what had made Kal pee with excitement. Henry froze as a familiar woman stood before him and quickly caught a jumping Kal and fell to the floor with him and Henry as Kal frantically tried to bombard her with kisses. She crouched down and held Kals face still forcing him to look her in the eyes. He couldn't believe what he was seeing until he heard her speak.
"YOU! JUST WHAT SO YOU THINK YOU WERE PLAYING AT!?!" your shout meant nothing to the pup as he was lunging at you wanting his kisses whining  beating Henry with his tail stayed behind the bear shaking like a leaf still in shock he petting him he needed to touch him after that scare.
"Henry!? Who was watching him?! I'll fucking kick there ass! fuck I'm so happy I saw him shit... Fuck! heads are gonna roll!" Henry tilted his head looking at you moving a hand to cup your cheek slowly.
"Y/n is-is that really you?" you smiled now calming down nodding to him
"Yeah...Hi Henry...I er-I take it Kal is my client for the day?" Henry nodded still refusing the release kal even though the dog wanted nothing to do with him as far a he was concered his mama was here and he wanted his cuddles.You smiled and stood up dusting yourself off then looked to the truck Kal wriggled out of Henry's grip jumping at you making you laugh ad pet him.
"Hey pooh bear I gotta move the truck first then we can have cuddles okay? Can you go with your daddy for a bit?" Henry stood shaking his head at you.
"No he wont he has missed you something chronic...He has been real depressed" you looked down to the dog and smiled opening the truck door and motioned for hims to climb in.
"Go on then one quick little ride then we can sort you out you little scruff bear...You getting in?" Henry nodded watching wincing as Kal clambered up into the truck then jumped in behind him controlling Kal a little as you drove up and parked off to the side then turned to face the still yipping pup.
"Okay okay bear calm down here you want cuddles?" at your open arms the dog dived at you still wagging his tail how it hadn't snapped off from hitting the hand break you don't know. "So pooh bear is my last minuet appointment? For the whole hog right?" Henry was stumped you...You were different still the same beautiful woman he hadn't stopped thinking about but you were more confident. you were happier and you glowed more if that was possible. Henry was flawed now was his chance...Why wasn't he speaking? why didn't he just say something? you looked at him a little confused. "Are you err...Are you okay Henry?" you asked slightly worried as Kal began to settle now that he had his mama back he placed his heavy head on your shoulder whining quietly in your ear. "I just... He needs a pamper...A professional pamper so... could you?" you smiled quickly nodding then quickly scratched Kals back kissing his cheek making him smile again. "Absolutely! make your boy nice and clean and fluffy and I even have a cute little dicky bow for the sweet boy~ Yesh I do  yesh I do my precious little pooh bear! you wanNa look all snazzy for you daddy? you coming in to? Can give you some pointers then you want have to splash out on it" it was then that something snapped in him and he stared at you licking his lips he began talking before he could even decide what to say. "...But what if I err...what if I wanted to splashout...It..Splashout on you?...And you know have you take care of him again...Have you stick around..." you frowned blinking he wanted you around? you'd assumed he had found someone better to look after the bear when you hadn't been called back. "You want me to stick around and look after Kal again?" he nodded blushing and running a hand through his hair he looked at you and swallowed.Fuck it Henry man up! just tell her!. "No! I...I want you to stick around and look after the both of us....Fuck that sounded clingy...W-What I meant is we both missed you...We have-Kal has been depressed...That fucking teddy! the bear you gave him he has been carrying it whining with it...Looking to me sulking he wanted me to find you again...I was such an ass i got him all excited to see you again and then you wasn't here he-we were both upset...A-and I want to see you...like see you" "You want me to...I don't understand...You don't want me to dogsit? Or you want me to dogsit again?" he sighed he was really ballsing this up. He tilted his head at you and moved to stroke Kals back calming himself down it was now or never Henry don’t let her escape again just Take the bull by the horns your meant to be a fucking witcher! superman and you cant even tell her you like her. he closed his eye and spoke with a low firm voice. "I want you here! I missed you and when I got home I was kicking myself....Y/n I have a- I was super excited to see you again but your not here and I...We need you...You were right Kal has a crush on you! A crush?...He's fucking in love with you and he was depressed without you! Missed you so much" you blinked looking from the dog to Henry "Kal...Loves me?" Henry nodded biting his bottom lip he sighed he could do this...He could do this just ask! just tell you. He smiled sweetly smoothing his hand over his face watching at you glanced at him weary. Then held up a hand then let it fall to his thigh. "Well yes very very much and he missed you terribly.... And he wants to spend time with you again and talk...Get to know you better and got out for walks, coffee ,maybe dinner? and I-I'm fucking this up shit..." you blinked gasping quietly l finally catching up with him you smiled shyly before speaking in a small voice. "Are...Are we still talking about Kal Henry?" you held your breath regretting the words as soon as they left your mouth maybe your hopes were to high? Were you reading to much into this?.   "No were not I..Please would-If you don't mind..And you don't have to! but I...Would you go out with me?...For Kal! He needs a woman around! he needs his Mama-NO NOT LIKE ERR SHIT FUCK!" you flushed blushing deep as Henry panicked covering his face embarrassed muttering trying to dig himself out of the hole he had dug. You giggled at him and smiled really embarrassed and moved to Kal peeking at him. Then spoke in a clear voice halting Henry's waffling. "Kal?~...Ha-have you been telling your daddy on me?~ you know when I told you I had a crush on him it was supposed to be a secret!" Henry snapped his head up to you blinking as if still taking in the information then a huge grin split across his face. "You have a crush on- fuck yes!" he leaned over to you before you could move he pressed Kals head out of the way and captured your lips you gasped making him smirk and quickly dart into your mouth. Henry smiled tilting his head you moaned l softly as he pressed you further back twisting his head suckling and thrusting back and forth trying to coax your tongue from your mouth. Then it was brought to an abrupt end as Kal lifted his head snout bumping into you chin snapping your jaw shut biting Henry's tongue. You quickly opened your mouth as he hissed and grunted jolting back with a laugh as almost immediately Kal gave him a look thag clearly said 'my mama' then began kissing your cheeks himself. Henry rolled his eyes poking out his tongue touching it with the pad of his finger checking for blood he smiled when there was none then spoke in a deep tone almost scolding to the pup snuggling into your neck hiding fro his dad.
"Kal....Son? You know your gonna have to share your Mama with me...I am your dad.."you chuckled leaning back looking to Henry as Kal continued to hide.
"Soo you..er you want to get lunch? Maybe after I sort out Kal?...He should have a nap after a good bath." Henry grinned wide nodding to you he was over the moon. "I'd love that! Maybe get a rerun of that kiss....Minus the jealous bear" you wriggled your eyebrows at him.
"Nah! Don’t have to wait that long! We can kiss when Kals safely leashed in the bath!" Kal suddenly pulled back wide eyed looking back and froth between you both making Henry laugh.
"Oh yes I forgot the bear doesn't like his baths" you giggled at him.
"Oh well you definitely need to be there with me...for moral support" he smiled wickedly before looking to Kal who was suddenly uncomfortable with the looks he was receiving. 
"Kal-e-bear time for a bath~" the dogs ears went down flat against his head as he sensed his parents were indeed going to wrestling him into a bath.

AN: This story is basically writing itself at the moment which is great. I intended so much more to happen in this chapter and somehow it ended up being an absolute emotional roller coaster instead. Though some important stuff does still happen. (I may just be subconsciously delaying Gisela’s death. I do love her so much.) Anyway as always your thoughts are always appreciated :)
Story Summary: Tove chose to surrender rather than be killed, after Sigfried was defeated at Beamfleot, giving herself up to the mercy of the Saxons. Thanks to Finan’s intervention, her life is indeed spared and she is brought into Uhtred’s service. With the sting of defeat fresh on her tongue and her new life fighting for the Saxons secured; Tove is left wondering what tricks the Gods have in store for her next.

Æscengum was where King Alfred intended to defeat Bloodhair. Upon receiving word, the Bishop sought out Uhtred to convey their King’s decision and request for troops. Together they stood on the top terrace landing to one of Lunden’s Roman houses looking out over the city. They were not alone as Finan was also there, but the Irishman was content to listen in silence while they spoke.
“Æscengum!” Uhtred barked.
Erkenwald shot a scathing look in Uhtred’s direction and rebuked him for his amused tone. Predictably, Uhtred did not seem to care much for the Bishop’s admonishment, merely waiting for the sour man to continue, and he did.
“Our Lord King,” he began. “Has called for you and some of your warrior to join him. If the safety of this city is ensured in their absence.”
“It is,” Uhtred assured.
Though his Lord did not indicate it aside from his quick response, Finan knew Uhtred was galvanized that Alfred had finally called for him. It had been weeks since Danes had first been spotted, yet all Wessex had done was assemble their army and wait.
“Haesten will not attack?” Erkenwald pressed.
“He won’t.”
Their conversation continued apace for a few more minutes, with the Bishop questing Uhtred until he felt certain Lunden would be safe. The matter then settled, Erkenwald took his leave of their presence, having no desire to dawdle in the pagan’s company. Uhtred and Finan watched him walk off -the waiting priests trailing behind until he was out of sight.
“Æscengum?” Finan commented mildly then.
“It is between Harald and Haesten’s forces,” Uhtred responded dryly. “They’ve marched their army across Wessex and accomplished nothing.”
Finan hummed absently. “Æthelred?”
“Perhaps.”
“Will Harald go there?” Finan asked, knowing the answer.
Uhtred shot Finan a meaningful look.
“I didn’t think so.” The Irishman chuckled.
Silently both men contemplated the merit or lack thereof to the supposed plan. It was spectacularly unlikely to succeed given that with the West Saxon army virtually out of their way, Bloodhair could simply continue to raid as much as he liked. Of course, to defeat Alfred had its draw, but the Danes were not the sort with an appetite for sieges, and to attack Æscengum would be a siege. That burh was relatively small and lay in the heart of Wessex, where it served to protect Winchester from the east. It had high strong walls and palisades, and if Harald had half a brain, he would leave Alfred to sit behind them while he enriched himself.
Finan soon found himself wondering what Tove would have to say about the plan when she heard. Surely, she would see the flaws and balk at its absurdity. The thought of it brought a small smile to his face.
“I’m going to ask Tove to stay behind,” Uhtred said suddenly.
Finan looked at him sharply. “She won’t like that.”
Uhtred’s answering look was hard. “Probably not.”
It was not difficult for Uhtred to read in Finan’s face that he wanted to ask why but was reluctant to question his judgment.
“I’ll need someone to stay with Gisela and the children.” Supplied Uhtred.
“No other reason?” Finan ventured.
“They get on well.”
Finan nodded. That much was true as the two had bonded over being pagan Danes among the Christian Saxons and were friends. Though there was another reason that neither Uhtred nor Finan was willing to directly voice. While it was their nature that the Danes squabbled routinely amongst themselves, Tove had not faced any Danes on a real battlefield since joining Uhtred’s household, and he felt somewhat cautious of putting her in such a position.
It was not because he doubted her loyalty to him or capability as a warrior. More specifically, he did not want to put her in a position that might cause her to hesitate and, therefore, be injured or killed. Uhtred knew avoiding that eventuality with Harald breathing down Wessex’s throat would not be possible for long unless he was defeated. So, despite knowing Tove would likely curse him for keeping her away, he would do what he could for a time -as her friend and Lord.
Several hours before the sunset, Uhtred found her seated on a bench in the yard wiping dirt from her face with a damp cloth. Since the night Finan had brought her back from the woods, Tove was changed, and Uhtred had noticed -though it was subtle. Not only had she returned to her more cheerful self, spending time again with the other warriors and with Gisela, but he perceived some of the heaviness she carried since Scaepege had been lifted from her shoulders. Finan had not shared the details of that night with Uhtred though it did not take one of much wit to determine the improvement was thanks to him. That was why Uhtred had chosen to share his plans with Finan before seeking her out. He trusted that had the Irishman any reservations about his decision, he would have voiced them then.
Tove let out a laugh at something Sihtric had said as Uhtred approached them. She sat next to Osferth, who Uhtred noted, was also covered in dirt with Sihtric across from them. All three seemed to be rather enjoying themselves.
“I slipped!” she exclaimed.
“You can’t lie to me,” Sihtric teased. “I saw it. Osferth used your own trick against you. Kicked your foot right out from under ya!”
“What’s this I hear? Tove Ødgersdottier has been beaten by a monk?”
Sihtric jumped at the chance to recount the story. Speaking with hardly concealed amusement, he filled in his Lord on the details of Osferth and Tove’s spar. She threw a weak glare at the half-Dane when he chuckled at the part where Osferth had copied the move she had used to win their first practice duel. Using his shield, he had pushed hard, causing her to stumble, thereby allowing him to kick a foot out from under her. When Sihtric had finished, Uhtred chortled good-naturedly.
“You cannot fault him for having learned from your style.” Uhtred pointed out.
Sihtric nodded and attempted to console her. “It is a clever trick.”
“Aye.” Tove agreed. “And you did well, baby monk.”
Having kept quiet up to that point, Osferth smiled and thanked her. Inclining her head slightly, Tove smiled in return.
“You are unhurt?” Osferth asked.
“Do not worry for me, friend. A sore backside will not slow me down.”
Before Osferth or Sihtric could reply, Uhtred interrupted. “I need to speak with you for a moment, Tove.”
Nodding, she got to her feet and followed her Lord without question. He led her out of the yard towards the armory to stow away the training staffs. There was only a young man inside when they arrived, and he left after replacing his stave in its proper place. Tove lingered momentarily, glancing at Uhtred, before going to set the staffs on their rack. Uhtred was not one to hesitate for lack of words though, he felt the need to choose them carefully for the news he was to deliver.
“Lord?” Tove asked when the silence became intolerable to her.
Brow crinkling some, he scratched his chin.
“Is everything alright?”
Uhtred dropped his hand, focusing on her face. A faint concern shadowed her otherwise calm expression as she awaited his answer.
“I received word from Alfred.” Uhtred paused before clarifying. “It is the king’s wish that I join him at Æscengum.”
Pointed as his words were, they also seemed meant to convey more than their obvious meaning. What meaning was, was not readily apparent to Tove. She made no effort to conceal her confusion from him.
“This is good news, is it not?”
“It is. The sooner Bloodhair is dealt with the better. But-” Uhtred heaved a sigh. “I need you to stay here.”
Comprehension dawned on her and a small frown rose to her lips.
“I want you to guard Gisela and my children. It will be you, along with Cerdic and a few others.”
“I understand, Lord.” Said Tove in a carefully calm tone, which surprised Uhtred a little.
Tension Uhtred had not realized he carried, released in his shoulders. “It is because I trust you to see that they are safe.”
Tove’s answering smile was gentle, and she bowed her head with respect. “I will.”
Uhtred nodded, and taking that as her dismissal, she left without another word.
After exiting the armory, Tove wandered aimlessly through the streets. All around her were Lunden’s citizens going about their daily life with little care for what happened out in the wider world. Part of Tove wished that was her lot, but her subconscious knew she would not be content with that sort of life. Both of her parents had been warriors; she and Kåre took after them in that regard. If she found a man and settled down, Tove imagined she would still be a warrior even then. So, the realization that her friends would be heading off to battle without her was a difficult one to swallow.
Of course, they would keep each other safe, but not being able to be there, all Tove was liable to do was worry. It occurred to her that that must be how Igna felt every time Kåre sailed. She did not like it.
That evening Tove chose to visit with Gisela and Ealhswith at Uhtred’s house for the chief purpose of avoiding any of the pre-battle enthusiasm that surely accompanied the news they would be riding out on the morrow. Blessedly the women avoided talking about it in her presence, which told her they already knew she’d be staying behind. It didn’t surprise her, considering Uhtred was likely to have informed Gisela who would be staying to guard the family, and Ealhswith could have learned from either her or Sihtric. Regardless of how they knew, Tove was thankful not to be surrounded by the whooping and shouting that was likely happening at the tavern.
They chatted idly about various mindless topics for several hours before Ealhswith decided it was time to get her children to bed. After bidding them goodnight, she gave Gisela and Tove both a quick hug and hurried off. Tove was then left alone by Gisela for a brief time as she put her own children to bed. When she returned, Gisela looked somewhat drained.
“I can leave if you’re tired.” Tove offered.
Gisela gave a short laugh as she took the seat beside Tove. “You’re fine; this one is determined to keep me up awhile longer anyhow.”
Tove’s grey eyes followed Gisela’s hand to her heavily pregnant belly.
“Do you think it will be a girl?” she asked.
“Definitely not. He kicks just as young Uhtred and Osbert did. It will be a boy.”
“When we were children, Kåre, always complained of our mother disliking him because she would not give him a brother.” Tove chuckled, but her face held a sadness.
Gisela put a reassuring hand on Tove’s arm. “I am sure he misses you too.”
“He thinks I am dead,” she said dryly. “At Scaepege...His best friend, Halvar, he was there. I spoke to him, and Halvar told me they all thought I was dead when they heard of the Thurgilson’s defeat.”
The dark-haired Dane frowned. “Was Kåre with him?”
Shaking her head, Tove took a sharp breath. “I was too thoughtless to ask.”
They were silent as Gisela rubbed Tove’s arm comfortingly.
“He tried to convince me not to come here -to stay for his child’s birth. Kåre has never had an interest in Wessex. He does his raiding in Frisia or Ireland.” Tove paused. “Perhaps so long as he thinks I am dead, he will stay away.”
Gisela looked deep in thought when Tove finished speaking, and they were both silent for what felt like quite a while but was, in reality, only a few minutes.
“Uhtred.” Gisela began carefully. “He would release you from your oath -if you asked it of him.”
Tove looked at the older woman in evident shock.
“My husband is not unkind. He knows what it is to be parted from home and loved ones,” she added.
To ask such a thing had never crossed Tove’s mind. If it had been posed to her months ago, she might have considered it, but now she found she could not. Not when just the thought of her friends going to battle without her caused her such great distress, and to think of never seeing them again felt impossible.
“I have never thought Uhtred unkind. He spared my life when many would not have,” Tove said firmly. “But I would not ask for that.”
“Not even to see Kåre or your sisters?” Gisela asked.
“Perhaps one day, when we have gone north, retaken Bebbanburg, it will be possible to see them, but I cannot part from him now.”
The knowing smile on Gisela’s face was odd to Tove, but she felt glad that the Lady seemed to understand. Not much later, Uhtred returned from the tavern, and Tove returned home.
Instead of being at all restful, her sleep that night was filled with fragmented dreams of battle. Some of them were of Beamfleot. In the first of those, she reached Njal in time to save him from Finan’s blade, only for her former Lord to turn on Finan and disembowel the Irishman before her eyes. Another version featured her brother in Njal’s place. There was also her dodging Finan’s shield and killing him upon realizing he had slain her Lord.  Then came the skirmish in Frisia, where she first killed a man, except it was not a random soldier; it was Osferth or Sihtric, or Uhtred, or perhaps all of them at once. The face of the dying man had seemed to change before her very eyes as she stared down at him past her bloodstained hands.
By far, the worst of them was of a battle that was entirely unfamiliar to her. She was engaging a huge man who wielded a vicious war axe when she heard her name being called from across the field. Desperately Tove yelled back, telling the caller to hold fast. For a time, she struggled against the giant, who was determined to split her head open. Every time Tove thought she had him or that she might simply escape, he was there again. The calls were growing more urgent, but she couldn’t get away. Her shield was lost. All she had was Mercy, her short sword, and Fate, her long blade. He just kept coming and she was starting to tire from dodging. 
Finally, an opening appeared as the behemoth swung his axe sloppily, missing her entirely; Tove was swift enough to take advantage of his mistake. Quick as she could, Tove thrust Mercy into the man’s belly, causing him to drop the axe as she twisted her blade on its way out. Not thinking twice about the dying man, Tove shoved pasted him and sprinted through the throng of battle towards the voice. Upon catching sight of the body lying prone on their back, her heart felt like it had stopped, and she sat up in bed, the sun shining through her window.
Despite knowing the dream for what it was, Tove was disturbed by it. Feeling an intense desire to assure herself of her friends’ safety before their imminent departure, she washed her face and dressed with haste. On her way to the stables, Tove made a point to try not to think of it though she could not help wondering whose cold dead eyes would have been staring up at her had she not woken.
Osferth was there already, loitering outside when she arrived. Having seen her approach from a distance, he called out a greeting when Tove was near enough to hear. She responded in kind, intentionally slowing her step to calm herself some before she reached him. The young former monk was whole and unharmed; it had been foolish to fear otherwise.
“I did not think to see you here,” Osferth said.
Tove arched a single brow at him. “Did you not expect me to see you off?”
He flushed, though whether at the mild joking implication in her tone or for feeling somewhat chastised by her words; it was unclear.
“Where are the others?” she asked, to deflect from her friend’s moment of embarrassment.
“Lord Uhtred is awake. He sent me to make sure the stable hands had the horses ready by the time he arrived.”
“Sihtric and Finan?” Tove asked.
“Likely still in their beds,” Osferth replied. “Both consumed a horrifying amount of ale last night.”
Tove nodded absently. “When are you to leave?”
“Before the mid-day meal or once everyone has arrived, whichever is sooner.”
The sight of Osferth had calmed Tove’s nerves considerably, but she felt the uncharacteristic anxiety would not be wholly banished until she had set eyes on all her friends.
“I could fetch them?” she offered.
“If you like.” Osferth chuckled. “I doubt they’ll be very agreeable.”
“Then I shall be doing you a favor,” Tove said.
Osferth nodded. “I will let Uhtred know when he gets here.”
She thanked him and set off towards Sihtric and Ealhswith’s home. It took Tove only fifteen minutes to reach the house walking at a leisurely pace. Sihtric’s daughter Elflæd was sitting outside playing with a home-made straw doll when she arrived. The dark-haired girl who looked so like her father smiled at Tove when she saw her.
“You’re here to see my daddy.” The girl observed astutely.
“Is he awake?” Tove asked lightly.
A sly grin spread across Elflæd’s face, which only served to make her look more like a miniature female version of Sihtric, and she whispered. “Mommy threw water on him.”
Tove chuckled. “Did she?”
Elflæd nodded excitedly. “Dolly and I laughed for a long time, but daddy didn’t think it was funny.”
“I’m sure he didn’t,” Tove said. “Is your mother inside?”
“She’s feeding Tellan!”
“I’ll go see them then,” she said and ruffled Elflæd’s hair before entering the home.
Ealhswith was at the kitchen table attempting to spoon porridge into her defiant son’s mouth with a look of utter defeat. Tove paused in the threshold to watch as the fussy Tellan smacked the spoon from his mother’s hand. She had to stifle a laugh when Ealhswith just stared at the offending piece of cutlery.
“I would say good morning, but I see that it is not,” Tove said once she had control of herself.
The Saxon lady looked up at her in slight astonishment. “I didn’t even hear you come in.”
“I should have announced myself.”
“No, no! It’s alright -you are always welcome. Are you looking for Sihtric?” Ealhswith asked, bending to retrieve the spoon.
“Yes.”
“Just a moment.” She stood and went to the stairs to call for him. “Sihtric!”
There was some shuffling above them and a muffled groan. Ealhswith looked at Tove and rolled her eyes for dramatic effect, but she was smiling.
“Here come and sit. Have you eaten?” Ealhswith asked, pausing on her way back to her seat. “I can get you some. I made plenty -though it seems half of it will end up on the floor.”
“Uh no, but you don’t need to trouble yourself,” Tove said, nodding her head towards Tellan as she took up a seat across from Ealhswith. “I see you’ve got your hands full.”
Before Ealhswith could answer, heavy footfalls came thumping down the stairs and a bedraggled Sihtric appeared -his hair and tunic were both damp. Tove covered her mouth to stop herself from laughing audibly at the sight of him. He stopped at the foot of the stair, throwing her an irritable look, then continued to the table where he plopped down into the seat next to his wife.
“You’ve no one to blame but yourself,” Ealhswith said to her husband.
Sihtric just groaned, dropping his head into his waiting hands. Ealhswith gave a long-suffering sigh before turning her attention back to their son.
“Are you sure you won’t eat?” The question was directed at Tove.
“No, I just came to check Sihtric was awake. I still have to go by Finan’s,” Tove replied. “Perhaps I’ll ask Gisela if she’d like to come for the evening meal, though?”
“Yes, that would be-” But Ealhswith was unable to finish her sentence due to Sihtric’s abrupt interruption.
“You’re going to Finan’s?” he asked.
Confused, Tove replied affirmatively.
Sihtric’s face paled, but he did his best to play it off. “I can get him. I’m sure you have...guard duties to get to.”
“I have no duties until everyone departs.” Tove eyed Sihtric suspiciously.
“Then I’ll come with you. Who knows what state Finan’s in,” he said.
And before she could reject the offer, Sihtric was on his feet heading for the door to pull on his boots. Tove glanced at Ealhswith, who only shrugged at the half-Dane’s strange behavior. By the time the women had exchanged their goodbyes and made their tentative plans to meet for dinner, Sihtric was standing outside waiting. There was tension between them as they made their way through the street, but Tove didn’t know what could be causing it.
It was no strange thing for her to go by the Irishman’s home after a night of drinking, so for Sihtric to insist on joining her was odd. Tove sent a few scrutinizing looks his way, but Sihtric made no comment. So, she walked alongside him in silence until they reached Finan’s house when he turned to her.
“I’ll go in first,” he said with no room for argument.
Tove frowned in response. Sihtric hovered next to her for a moment and she looked at him expectantly. Vainly perhaps, Tove hoped he was about to explain what the problem was but instead, Sihtric just looked at her carefully. She was about to demand some answers for his peculiar attitude when a crash sounded inside the house.
There was no time for Sihtric to stop her as Tove swiftly sidestepped him to push the door open. The curtains were drawn, so the small home’s interior was dim when she entered the main living area accompanied by Sihtric. Their eyes adjusted and the two looked around for anything that could have been the source of the sound. There was nothing; cups and platters were set in their place, chairs were pushed in, and Finan was nowhere to be seen. Though, they did spy that the door to the bedroom was slightly ajar.
Without thinking, Tove headed for the door. This time Sihtric was prepared to stop her, though, and he put a hand on her arm to halt her progress. She shot him a dirty look.
“What?” she snapped, rather fed up with his behavior.
“I don’t think he is alone.”
The suggestion gave Tove a pause, for she felt utterly obtuse not to have considered it as a possibility before surging into the house. Her only thought after the dreams she’d had was to ensure her friend was alright. Flushing a deep scarlet, Tove shrugged Sihtric’s arm off and stepped back from the door. Sihtric went inside, leaving the door open behind him; Tove did not peer in. She could hear Sihtric inside the room, attempting the rouse Finan. Then came a female voice, and for a reason she couldn’t explain, Tove instantly felt compelled to leave.
Outside, Tove stood with her back to the house, staring into the street. The concern that had briefly filled her drained away only to be replaced by something she couldn’t quite place. Whatever it was, Tove pushed it down. It wasn’t the first time in her life she’d found a friend in bed with someone. There was no reason to be bothered, Tove told herself. It was just Finan. Yet somehow, she had never thought of him being with someone nor had she seen him with anyone either, and she had been part of Uhtred’s household warriors for almost a year. Or perhaps, she’d just never noticed it? Tove frowned at that. It was unlikely; Finan had become her best friend and they spent quite a bit of time together.
Voices could be heard coming from inside the house. One of them Finan’s distinctive Irish lilt, then Sihtric and a female. Tove involuntarily stiffened when footsteps came up behind her shortly after the talking stopped, but it was only Sihtric. His expression was searching when he first met her eyes.
“He’ll meet us at the stables in a while,” Sihtric said.
Tove nodded.
“In the meantime, I’m starving. Come on.”
And Tove allowed herself to be led back to his and Ealhswith’s home -the dream and her worry forgotten.
The previous night’s events were cloudy in Finan’s mind, but he did recall the woman serving him and the others ale most of the evening. She was reasonably pretty with her ashy blonde hair, dark eyes, and an ample figure. Throughout the night, she had smiled at him and perhaps they spoke a few words in passing, though that conversation was lost to the fog of ale. What he could remember more clearly was bidding Sihtric goodnight when he returned from taking a piss and leaving with the barmaid. How that had come about, he wasn’t wholly sure. In his next full memory, they were at his house; she walked ahead of him towards the bedroom, leading him along with a mischievous glint in her eye.
The next thing he knew, she was lying naked beneath him moaning too loudly, clutching his shoulders, but it wasn’t her -at least not in his mind. His inebriated brain hadn’t seen the tavern wench. Instead, he had been gazing down at Tove writhing beneath him with her near-white blonde hair haloed around her head, moaning with pleasure as he made love to her, and staring intently into his eyes. He leaned down to brush a tender kiss to her lips, but when he pulled away it was the barmaid again. Any further details of the night beyond that had slipped through his fingers. Finan grumbled to himself, imagining the whole encounter must not have been that outstanding if it did not cut through the haze.
Having finished dressing, the barmaid emerged from Finan’s room. She still looked somewhat disheveled, but at least she was adequately dressed, though there was no reason to worry over it as Sihtric and Tove had already gone. Her smile faltered at the sight of Finan splashing water from a bowl onto his face. He didn’t acknowledge her at first as he stared blankly at the still water.
“Are you alright?” she asked tentatively.
Finan started not having realized her presence. “I’m fine…”
She went to place a hand on his shoulder, but Finan’s voice halted her.
“Look, we had fun an all, but ye do not need to make it what it is not,” he murmured.
Her breath stuck in her throat. She stepped back, squared her shoulders, and smoothed her expression. That was not the morning greeting she had expected to hear after how tender and passionate Finan had been with her, but whatever his reasons were, she supposed she’d just have to accept them.
 “I’ll just be going then.”
“That, is probably best,” Finan replied, still not looking away from the bowl.
He was alone then staring into nothingness and pondering. The vision of Tove was seared into his mind. Every time he closed his eyes, it was there. Of course, Finan had always recognized she was beautiful, not to would have been to lie, but as their friendship grew, he tried not to think about her beauty. It was more difficult though, after the woods when in the glow cast by the fire, he could have sworn for a moment he had in fact come upon one of the fair folk. And the heat he had felt emanating from her when he had rested his hand on her knee had stayed with him long after the contact was over.
In a sudden burst of frustration, Finan smacked the bowl away only vaguely hearing it smash against the far wall. He couldn’t do this. Feeling this way was wrong, but it was only becoming more difficult to ignore. Perhaps that was what had spurred his drunken self to seek out a distraction? Well, he thought wryly, it clearly had not worked. Finan cursed under his breath in his native tongue. He needed to pull himself together. They were riding out in mere hours and he could not afford to go to battle in an unfocused state of mind. 
Mentally, Finan shook himself before setting about packing the few things he’d need in a sack and heading for the stables. When he reached his destination, there were already some people congregated around outside. Among them, he spotted Tove with Osferth, Lord Uhtred and Gisela. She leaned effortlessly against the plank wall of the stable, engaged in a seemingly serious conversation with Uhtred and the others. Averting his gaze, Finan searched for Sihtric, but before he could locate the dark-haired Dane, his name was called. He looked to see Uhtred waving him over.
Unable to ignore his Lord, Finan walked over. Gisela was appealing to her husband regarding the extent of her guard when as he strode up. It seemed she felt Uhtred was being a tad excessive. Tove wore a look of amusement, whereas Osferth appeared to be considering the Lady’s point.
“Tell these three that ten men are a perfectly reasonable guard,” Uhtred said.
Finan arched a brow, exchanging looks with Osferth who shrugged, and Tove who in turn offered a placating glance to Uhtred.
“And what is the alternative?” he asked.
“Six is enough,” said Gisela.
“With three on and three off at any one time.” Added Tove.
“Seems fair to me,” said Finan.
Uhtred sighed. Seeing that he was outnumbered, he relented. “Alright, but Tove will stay at the house.”
Gisela smiled, and Finan had a suspicion the Lady had intended her to do just any way. The decision made Uhtred excused himself, with a swift kiss on his wife’s cheek, likely to check on some other business. Leaving Finan with the remaining three.
“I’ll meet you at the gate when they are ready to leave,” Gisela said to Tove.
The shieldmaiden indicated her agreement with a nod. Gisela threw a look at Osferth before she departed.
“I’ve got some things to check on,” Osferth added before heading off as well.
Tove watched Osferth hurry off with a curious look. She was sure she’d seen him complete his preparations earlier. Shrugging it off as the monk just being odd, she turned to scrutinize the Irishman’s appearance.
“I see you are well,” Tove said.
“Aye.”
“That is good.”
Finan felt an uncomfortable tension between them, but he was unsure of how to break it. Though Finan hadn’t seen her, he knew she was there with Sihtric at his house and didn’t know what she had seen.
“Did you know?” Tove asked, seeking his gaze.
“Know wha’?” he responded in mild surprise.
“Yesterday Uhtred told me I was to stay behind as part of Gisela’s guard. Did you know?”
Finan avoided her eyes when he answered. “Aye. He did tell me tha’.”
He could see her nod out of his periphery, but she made no verbal response.
“I warned him ya’ wouldn’ be happy.”
Tove hummed. “I am only unhappy to see my friend -friends- go to battle without me.”
Finan looked at her earnest grey eyes and wondered how he could dare hope for more from her. The many practical reasons she could not possibly want him aside; how he could even let himself be with her after Laoise. The grief of that ill-fated infatuation no longer stung, but its shadow was long and full of warning. Finan had not allowed himself anything more than a passing fancy for a woman since his exile from Ireland.
“You will look after yourself?” Her expression was pained.
“Of course.” Finan smiled, trying to lighten her mood. “I’ve made it this long, haven’t I.”
Rolling her eyes, Tove punched the Irishman lightly in the shoulder. Even though Finan hadn’t checked Gúthwine, he elected to stay and chat with her a while longer. Both were apparently reticent to part now the tension was dispelled, but when Uhtred called out for the departing warriors to saddle up, Finan was shocked how much time had passed. Tove appeared just as surprised.
“You had better get on then,” she said, pushing off the wall.
Without thinking, Finan stepped forward to embrace her and Tove returned it warmly, resting her forehead against his shoulder. He held her to him even as he felt the same rush of heat as when he’d touched her knee. When Finan finally thought he should let go, Tove held on; her fingers clutching him felt like an echo of the vision from the previous night, causing him to still.  She turned her head slightly to whisper in his ear.
“Come back.” Tove released him and the heat was gone.
Finan stared at her and thought to crack a joke, but none came. In the end, he could only nod.
Tove stood with Gisela and the children at the gate to watch them go. Uhtred led the precession flanked by Sihtric, Finan and Osferth -behind them rode three hundred of Lunden’s warriors. They all looked quite well in their battle finery and Tove committed their faces to memory. It was the first time she would be parted from them since coming to Lunden, a lingering feeling of doubt twisted in her gut telling her not all would go as planned. As they approached the gate, Tove caught Finan’s eye and smiled reassuringly. He returned the gesture and waved to her, but then Sihtric pulled his attention away.

endnote; I hope it was clear from Tove’s internal dialogue that she doesn’t think Finan is with someone now. And we finally got why Finan is holding himself back with her. But I mean come on man, it couldn’t possibly work out worse than him ending up on a slave ship -could it? Laoise is pronounced (Lee-sha)

Hikari no Jukyo Chapter 3:”I love you” (Dwelling Place of Light)
Hikari no Jukyo Chapter 3:
A/N: HnJ part 3
Well… Our journey on this request fic, which surprisingly became one of the favorites… wow… I did not expect that. @croissantrose71 Thanks to you! Give yourself some credit on this! Is now… very sadly, coming to an end… maybe… see end note. ;) Well… Oh, but for the finale if you guys could reblog this and tag it “HnJ”, I’d be really thankful, and it shows a lot T^T Since that is my abbreviation for this fic.
Now… before anything. How did I come up with “Hikari no Jukyo” as a title? Just a little story to share. Don’t worry, we’re getting to what you like. Later. It’s just below the A/N.
So, first of all… This had absolutely NO title. But as I was in need of a name for the Inn, which was owned by the Kagaris, I searched up Akko’s name background which shows on Wikipedia and stuff. Really. It meant light, child of light I think, well, her name means her character basically, if I recall correctly? Light and excitement and stuff, fire? I forgot XD, but well… It sounded catchy, thus I decided to put it as the title, since well… they stay at the place… then came the idea for chap2’s ending which was… “Akko was her Hikari no Jukyo” and it was so fun doing, “Welcome my love, to Hikari no Jukyo.” So now everything makes sense… I think.
Kagari Akko kind of relates to light and stuff, so the Dwelling place of light, Hikari no jukyo is like… just a fancy way of saying “Akko’s House.” Or I guess the “Kagari’s house”.
XD This realization is hilarious for me.
Ok so I entitled this chapter “I love you”, because every scene… well there’s an “I love you.”. So… yeah.
And I realized this is significantly shorter than the rest :( Aww.... what was the wait for then? Well... again, please do see the end note.

Ephemeral.
A transitory feeling.
An emotion so unstable, so… hard to put faith in. Something you can just lose, be afraid to lose, knowing you will lose it.
This was what the blonde feared would be the main characteristic of this moment. Fleeting.
“This is real, Diana… This is forever.”
And all those doubts were swiftly erased by a most reassuring existence.
It may have been that shaky breaths, sweaty palms and swollen lips were all that was left from the vividness of memories of touches and kisses.
They might not have had a physical proof, but the memories would have to last longer than those things if Diana still craved reassurance.
They say nothing lasts forever.
But…
Kagari Atsuko looked to change that.
Proving those words everyday would become her mission… It would be accomplished easy as she had said it. Refreshed with everyday reminders that would simply be impossible to forget.
With kisses, hugs, intimacy… warmth-
LOVE.
“I love you.”

 Many have claimed that ‘I love you’ has become an easier set of words to throw around, and the more they are said, the less significant, the less meaningful, the less sincere they become.
If everyone could so easily give and show their emotions every day without feeling the hardships of expressing them, they may not mean them at all.
“That’s not true.” Some witch from Luna Nova, mischievous and amazingly truthful, spoke with conviction.
“You say it because you mean it. You can only say it if you mean it, right? So what’s the point in saying it at all if you don’t?”
And those words could have shocked many, or annoyed many at the naivety.
“I believe that when I say the words ‘I love you’, I believe in my feelings that drive me to say it.” She smiled proudly. “And besides, I would regret every single day I wouldn’t say it- all the more if I miss it a day and into forever.”
A solemn sad thought.
“So say it as much as you can, while you can. It’s such a waste to regret it when you can’t.”
“These words are not to be thrown freely without feeling, but expressed freely with all the emotions in the world.”
It is never wrong to say…
“I love you.”

 “You ruined the make-up.”
Akko looked up from staring at their joined hands swinging along with each stride they took on the way down from the hill of remembrance, loving the way they fit and melded together perfectly, wanting to capture the hold in a photograph for remembrance.
She laughed sheepishly, scratching her cheek with her free hand as she looked at Diana. “I didn’t really like wearing it anyway.”
“I liked it though. You were simply exquisite with it.” The heiress gave her hand a squeeze before bringing Akko’s hand to her lips and planting gentle kisses on each finger, before kissing her wrist, her lips staying a tad longer there.
“Only with it?” Akko said with faux-disappointment, pulling a pouty face on Diana, who hummed contemplatively. Akko felt slightly annoyed, pulling the blonde close then bumping their shoulders together, sending Diana stumbling off, but catching her last moment, holding her securely.
“No… Of course not.” Diana laughed, voice tinkling and light. Soon though, the giggles died down and she turned completely serious, staring into the eyes that constantly compelled her to give all her love away to the owner before trailing down to glance at pink, enticing lips. “You’re always beautiful.“
“Diana…”
They were lucky everyone had gone ahead and walked in front, giving them much appreciated privacy, otherwise, Diana would never have had the gall to dare something so intimate under watchful eyes of an audience.
She kissed Akko.
Long, deep, loving, sensual, she gave into her intense feelings and let all of her pent-up emotions free, giving Akko something she knew they both wanted; she pushed their lips together, teaching them to dance to a rhythm, a song they never had danced to before.
And Akko loved every thrilling second of it, feeling her body warm up in all the love, soaking up all Diana’s feelings thrown at her and returning full-force.
Parting with a pop, in dire need of air, Diana’s dazed eyes accompanied her hand in trailing along the brunette’s bottom lip, rubbing it, wiping off any remaining saliva before planting a softer, shorter kiss, but with as much love as there was in the one before it.
“I love you.”

The rest had immediately retired to their rooms upon arrival at the inn, claiming that the night had worn them out and most wanted to hit the sack as soon as they could.
Most meaning, not Diana.
The blonde insisted she take Akko back to her room, if only for the walk to provide her more minutes to waste away- no, spend wisely by the girl’s side.
The corridors were dimly lit, filled with only the sounds of tapping feet with the background of silence, not one word uttered, but every thought and emotion felt.
Akko stopped in front of that familiar wooden door, sighing, before turning to face Diana with a sad parting smile.
“You know… I hate to think how much sadder it will be when we part longer than tonight.” Of course she referred to a time approaching so surely, so soon and Diana gave their joined hands a small squeeze, heart clenching in longing and sorrow.
“I don’t want to leave.” She muttered, eyes so expressive and upset, her words meant not only for tonight, but for a day they wished wouldn’t happen, but knew was inevitable and needed to happen.
“Do you think I want you to leave?” Akko giggled, eyes drifting to their hands as she smiled at the sight. “But you have to.” She sang out, voice wavering.
“Do I really?” Diana whined, the sound so unbecoming of her as she drew nigh to Akko, enveloping her in her arms, rocking them both back and forth. “I am against it, and I honestly oppose the thought.”
Akko giggled, burying her nose through fluffy strands of white and light green, inhaling the enriching scent, kissing through them before reaching her lover’s cheek.
“Yes, you do; and yes, I know you don’t like it either.” She laughed some more at the pout before she brought her arms to rest around Diana’s shoulders, bumping their foreheads and noses together.
“Good night, My Warm Diana~.” She hummed against her girlfriend’s cheek, lips leaving a small trail to her jaw before planting a small smooch on her cheek.
“Aww…” Diana frowned, a little playful with her next comment. “You missed a spot.”
Akko may have rolled her eyes, but the implications were just too adorable as she giggled breathily against Diana’s plump reds, giving them their desired action, biting for extra spice.
“Good night, love. For real this time, okay?” Akko pinched Diana’s cheek as the blonde sighed in bliss, leaning into the now gentler touch as the other witch cradled her face lovingly.
“Good night, my personal ‘Hikari no Jukyo’.” Diana chuckled, and Akko giggled along with her, confused and amused.
“What is that supposed to mean?” She pinched Diana’s nose this time, before kissing it for healing.
“It means I want to come home to you.”
Akko was quiet, feeling a bit overloaded and emotional, a few tears forming at the corners of her eyes which made Diana gasp in surprise, desperately wiping them away.
“What’s wrong?” She questioned frantically.
“Nothing… just- I want you to come home to me too.” Akko murmured as Diana planted another comforting kiss on her lips. “I will always welcome you back with open arms.”
“And parted lips?”
Akko laughed at the suggestion, running her thumb over Diana’s pair of delicious lips over and over, leaving them tingly and warm.
“If you want?” She replied, shaking her head at the cheesiness they were both displaying as well as their silliness.
“I would love that.” Diana whispered, sighing as she knew time was slipping by and they both had to get to bed. But- one more comment couldn’t hurt. “I would love that as much as I love you.”
“Hmmm?” Akko blushed at that, but grinned widely.
“Oh, no… forget that thought.” Diana hummed contemplatively. “I’d love you much more.”
Akko would argue with any judge who would say otherwise as she strongly believed Diana deserved that one big kiss from her, of course the heiress couldn’t help but smile all throughout, their teeth clashing a bit.
“Good night.” Akko breathed, slapping the Cavendish’s shoulder lightly before turning her around and pushing her in the direction leading back into her own room, Akko sliding her door open and entering just in case Diana baited her to prolong their already extended good nights.
“Sleep well, love. Sweet dreams and Good night.” Diana relented, giving a curtsy before looking into Akko’s deep red eyes and drowning herself in them. “I love you.”
It was simply irresistible, Akko running to her, one last hug, one last kiss, she swore, whispering, “See you in the morning.” While Diana simply nodded, holding Akko for a few seconds more before releasing the girl and allowing her repose for the night.
At the same time, both in their hearts and out loud, they spoke.
“I love you.”

Morning came too soon, some would say. Amanda still desired more sleep as they had turned in quite late that night and even Ursula requested a few more minutes to sleep in, eye bags in place while Lotte looked perfectly fine, used to all-nighters from reading so much, and Sucy was well… Sucy.
Diana wasn’t faring any better either, nearly staying awake all night after all the interactions, all the intimate ones replaying in her mind over and over again driving her mad with embarrassment and love, overflowing for her clumsy counterpart.
Gosh, she was so deeply in love with Akko.
Which was probably no problem as their family motto was “Affection”.
And maybe that was the sole reason she willed herself up, if only to be able to see the girl soon as she was able, and believe her, she was a very capable person.
In one of her night gowns, she tried to sneak out of her room as subtly as she could, jumping a bit as Sucy’s voice echoed through the quiet room.
“Please keep your PDA to a minimum.” Diana nearly yelped, realizing they had been seen, as she turned her head around to see the potion-maniac sitting peacefully by the window, drinking something in a mug. “Last night was just allowance since it was special.”
Diana nodded, grateful for the consideration and warning as Sucy waved her hand, shooing the girl off, out and hurriedly, reminding her of how desperately she wanted to see Akko.
If it were not allowed to run in lengthy hallways, even here, Diana was already in trouble, and twice now. She didn’t care however, the more she hesitated, the longer it would take to see Akko.
Besides, feeling the wind in your hair- that cold morning air- was refreshing.
Now, reaching their dining area, Diana could smell traces of a meal in the making. Pancakes, butter, bacon, sunny-side-up eggs, scrambled eggs? The smell of Hot chocolate- maybe that was what Sucy had been drinking, and maybe the smell of some fruits.
But then there was this unmistakable scent that drew her in closer.
Like a dog, Diana followed the guiding of her nose to some sweet, flowery, free fragrance. Her eyes nearly shut as her feet wandered aimlessly till she found her nose buried in the sweet soft, tickling threads of brown hair, nuzzling into it as she blew near the girl’s ear causing her to yelp.
“D-diana!” She knew the culprit without looking, that familiar warmth wrapping around her in a hug as the heiress’ hands encircled her waist.
“Good morning~.” She whispered into the cook’s ear, planting kisses on her cheek, squeezing tighter. “I’m happy to see you.” Diana murmured against Akko’s shoulder as the girl giggled, face red.
“Well, I’m happy to see you too, but as you can see,” Akko tried wiggling against the grasp of the unrelenting prodigy who refused to let go. “I’m kind of in the middle of something important.” She smacked Diana’s hand lightly, rubbing it consolingly afterwards.
“More important than me?” Akko gaped at the puppy eyes, not imagining in a million years that Diana Cavendish would dare try that type of bribery.
“That’s underhanded.” Akko frowned, transferring the eggs on the pan to a plate beside her. “Fine, I just finished anyway.” The brunette gave in, turning off the stove and gas, before rotating inside her girlfriend’s grasp till they came face to face.
Diana smirked, happy at her win as Akko cupped her face, rubbing her palms and squishing pinkish cheeks together, before pinching them outward, then rubbing them tenderly again. Red eyes met with blue ones as they drew closer together, lips meeting in a kiss, the heiress humming against perfect lips.
“Good morning.” Akko greeted, smiling so brightly as she rested her head against Diana’s chest.
“Good morning.” The blonde responded, putting her chin atop her partner’s head.
“I love you.” Akko spoke, kissing the place above Diana’s heart over her shirt, making the organ flutter against its cage.
One of her hands went to tilt Akko’s face upward before planting more soft kisses on the girl’s mouth, never wanting to give up the addiction she had now developed to them.
“I love you.”

Akko was having a field day, laughing endlessly at her friend because Sucy had finally been released from her pale complexion and was donning a gorgeous tan.
“Look at your own girlfriend; she tanned too.” The mushroom-enthusiast retorted, not really caring that she was Akko’s laughing-stock, but also needed a bit of revenge.
Because she was Sucy Manbavaran. She loved getting the last laugh.
“Yeah, and it only makes her look all the more gorgeous.” Akko grinned, slightly embarrassed at her own honest words, but proud of the beauty she could call hers.
She saw Diana in the distance, bantering and exchanging opinions with Amanda and their professor.
The couple’s eyes met, and at the same time, their lips moved to form silent words, expressing what they felt at all times.
“I love you.”

“Miss Cavendish, may I have a word?”
The blonde magical genius felt a shiver run up her spine as she froze midway in hugging Akko at her father’s deep and unnaturally strict voice.
“Y-yes, of course… I… I shall remove myself from your daughter.” She bowed, releasing Akko who tried to reach for her wrist, but was stopped by a pointed glare from her own father to which she backed down.
“Let’s talk in the other room.”
Akko felt very nervous. The click of the lock to the side room sounded through the now quiet living area, Akiko looking like she knew something and gesturing to Akko to follow her and listen in by the door.
But as her mother whispered what was about to occur, Akko slapped her forehead in exasperation, wanting to barge in on her father’s ridiculous shenanigans and means of amusement.
“It’s fine.” The older brunette assured. “Also, if she can handle this, it proves she really loves you.”
Akko decided to give her father a chance, and obeyed the request of her mother.
“Okay.”
Meanwhile, Diana was bathing in her own cold sweat, legs tucked below her and hands balled into shivering fists on her lap, back straighter and stiffer than her already usual straight and stiff posture.
“Diana Cavendish.” The deep voice bellowed in her ears.
“Yes?!” She answered, loud, clear, scared.
“I will be getting straight to the point.” Kentarou looked her square in the eyes, impressed that at least her gaze never wavered. “What are your intentions with my beloved daughter?”
Diana choked on her saliva despite expecting that comment. Sure, she had admitted it to the girl’s mom, but this was Akko’s father. And gods knew that those were terrifying beings.
“I-I!” She tried braving it, looking the man in those familiar red pools, the similarities to other red jewels calming her somewhat. She sucked in a deep breath, knowing there was no point in trying to hide something like love.
Also, she wanted the formal permission to have Akko by her side.
“Sir,” She addressed him, an air of her usual seriousness around her. “I would like to date your daughter.” She said the words clearly, before lowering herself to the ground, waiting for the final verdict.
“And what makes you think you can take care of her? What makes you so sure that you will not tear her heart apart?”
Diana gulped, the beads of sweat on her brow increasing. She tried to be rational, thinking of her answers carefully.
“I, sir, Umm…” Stuttering was rarely associated with Diana, but the immense pressure she felt killed her inside. “I, I can’t promise that I won’t hurt her. Things like that are just inevitable in relationships.”
Ken remained quiet, allowing Diana a chance at explaining. He was surprised when the girl’s nervousness dissipated, replaced by a warm loving look in her eyes as she stared into the distance, smiling softly.
“But sir, what I do know, and am totally assured of, is that…” She looked the man square in the eye before, once more, prostrating herself before him. “I love your daughter very much. May I have the honor of dating her?”
“…”
Diana gripped the hem of her clothes tightly, nails digging deep into her palms, waiting for an answer- or any sound at all!
She felt as if she had been slapped in the face, laughter ringing wildly in her ears.
“Hahahahahaha! Oh dear, my, my… Wow, you are… so serious? I guess it was to be expected, but… Well.” Kento stood them both up before wrapping Diana in a bone-crushing hug. “That seriousness means you’ll be taking very good care of Akko.” He patted her on the back, proud. “Welcome to the Kagari Family.”
Diana’s relief flowed out in tears as her posture gave out and she now sat slouching on one of the floor cushions, disbelieving and shocked, breathing heavy.
“I knew you’d say yes.”
The heiress looked up to see two identical women by the door, one playfully grinning; the other, worried and relieved at the same time.
Of course, the younger Kagari female immediately rushed to her side, cupping Diana’s cheek.
“You okay? My dad didn’t scare you too much, right?” Akko looked into her eyes, concern all over her features- and Diana enjoyed the loving attention- before Akko glared at her father, then gazed upon Diana again.
“I’m fine. Just a bit… shaken up, I suppose.” She said, leaning forward into Akko’s chest, inhaling her scent, before remembering they had an audience, Akko’s parents to be exact. That fact alone made her jerk away so fast, she nearly had whiplash.
“Diana?!”
“Oh? What’s this?” Akiko grinned, going closer to poke both girls. “Don’t tell me…” She gasped in faux shock. “How far have you two gone?!”
Akko gaped, blushing fifty shades of red, and Diana felt as if she could just faint.
“We-WE, no! Mom, we haven’t-, there’s nothing like that, Diana is, I’m-!”
“Ahahahaha…” Akiko burst into fits of laughter, slapping her husband’s back painfully enough. “I was teasing dear.” She waved a hand, still laughing at the stupefied expressions of the youngsters.
“But really,” Kento cut in, serious as always, just before dropping lethal grenades into the play field. “At least we won’t have to worry about teen pregnancy. Or does magic allow that?”
“Dad!”
“Oh, but mind you, we do expect grandkids.”
Diana fell over, Akko panicking as she shooed her naughty parents off to tend to her lover, now resting her head on the brunette’s lap.
“The… the pressure, they expect grand… teen preg-“
“Diana, love, please calm down.” Akko smoothed out her hair, wiping away the perspiration on her forehead, planting a kiss on it. “We’ll be fine. A-and those things are too far ahead.” Akko looked away, blushing.
“Akko.”
Again they became lost in one another’s eyes, faces drawing closer and closer.
“Thank you.” Akko whispered against Diana’s lips, just before they touched.
“For what?” Diana replied, reaching her hand up to rub along Akko’s cheeks.
“For answering the way you did. For being so brave for me.” Akko kissed her again, hand entwining, playing together. “For loving me.”
Diana brought their joined hands to her lips, kissing Akko’s.
“Well, of course I’d answer the way I did… we both know why.”
She smiled softly, urging another kiss from Akko.
“I love you.”

“Kyaaaa!!! Look, look! Ahhh, so cute!”
Constanze’s brows furrowed deeply as her robot complained about the master being treated as a small child by the Japanese woman, who had picked her up, reminding the mechanic of a similar situation with Akko before. She waved her arms about, Akiko twirling her around in the air. Really; like mother, like daughter.
“Akko-chan! Look, look! She’s adorable!”
“Yes, mom. I can see that.” Akko laughed at her mother’s excitable nature, not that she could say much as she had inherited the same character.
“Aww… I wanna adopt her! What do you say to a younger sister, Akko?”
“No! Mom, you can’t! As cute as Constanze is, you can’t!” Akko reprimanded, taking the little techno expert away from her mother’s stifling grasp, placing her back down, holding a thumbs-up to reply to the girl’s grateful gestures.
“Fine.” She pouted, before grinning. “But maybe… Diana-chan~ About the grandkids-“
“Mom!”
Diana laughed at the mother-daughter antics, amused. The pair was cute and endearing, very much so for Diana.
Now, the group had begun put together their plans for today, as Constanze and Jasminka had finally arrived to join them, despite it only being for two days.
They’d certainly try to make the most out of it.
But while everyone was discussing such plans, Diana attempted to spirit Akko away to a nearby corner, hoping to get a moment alone before they had group activities and she wouldn’t have the chance to do these things any longer.
“Diana?”
Akko found herself smothered in affection and kisses, trying to keep up with Diana’s frantic love, before they had to head back as Akiko’s voice was calling for them.
They tried to fix themselves up, not looking suspicious in the slightest.
The group decided to go back to the beach the first day, then maybe do a hike in the early morning. With that agreement in place, everyone went off to change, Akko’s mother taking the two new members along to choose their swimsuits.
But before the couple could separate, Diana pulled Akko in to kiss her on the cheek, whispering in her ear as they parted.
“I love you.”

The hike had been marvelous. Extremely fun.
Besides the usual mishaps cause by none other than Akko, it was an invigorating experience, exploring the wild, touching wild animals, squirrels, small birds and the like (All of whom seemed to be Akko’s woodland-creature friends).
Akko had a lighter burden in food preparation this time, as Jasminka was here to lend a helping hand, and Diana had basic kitchen skills to help the pace move along nicely.
It was delicious, refreshing and fulfilling.
But now that that was done and over with… The night that was left, these moments were for the guests to pack up, ready to go home.
A knock interrupted the Cavendish girl, currently folding her clothes before placing them neatly into her bag, taking a break from her work to address her visitor.
“Come in.”
The culprit knocked once more, before speaking in a strange, funny voice, tickling Diana’s humor.
“Ms. Diana Cavendish? I am Kagari Atsuko.” The brunette tried to speak in as deep a voice as she could, doing her best act at being professional.
“Yes, Miss Kagari? And what business might you have here?” Diana replied, straightening up her posture as she sat on her bed, legs crossed over one another as Akko neared her, sitting on her legs in front of Diana.
The mischief-maker grinned, before opening her mouth.
“I would like to apply for a position in your heart.”
Diana tried not to reveal just how much that comment made her heart flutter, emotions going wild. “Oh?” She replied in an amused tone, face betraying nothing. “What are your qualifications?” She decided to play along at least, if only to see where this was going.
“Well… “Akko approached closer, standing before the heiress and reaching out for Diana’s hand, kissing it before pulling Diana to her feet, twirling the blonde around. “I am quite the cook.” She started counting her ‘skills’ on her fingers. “I am athletically inclined, and I can send you flowers and all that for the rest of your life.”
“Anything else?” Diana asked, genuinely interested to know more. “What major thing can you contribute to my heart?” She inquired, wanting to know how much deeper Akko’s love ran for her, and she already felt it to be quite deep.
There was a pause in the air, but then the Japanese placed a hand on her partner’s waist and bringing Diana close, hugging her, listening to her heartbeat as Akko kissed her exposed collarbone.
“I can love you forever with all of mine.”
Diana found it simply irresistible, kissing Akko again.
It took them a few moments and then some, seconds ticking by, turning into minutes as their session stretched out for a time unidentified.
Diana sucked on Akko’s lower lip, earning her a small pleasing sound from her girlfriend as she tightened her embrace.
As they finally parted, a thin string of saliva connecting them, Akko looked broken all of a sudden, and in turn, Diana felt hurt for her.
“Is something wrong?”
“I’ll miss you.” The words were spoken in a sad whisper, murmur, the Inn’s owner shifting to hug Diana from behind with arms around the girl’s waist, swaying lightly as Akko hummed more tunes to her.
Now Diana felt like crying, remembering that they’d have to live apart for a while, only being able to see each other at school anymore.
Sure, there were ways of them staying together, Diana renting a room in this Inn, but she’d feel as though she’d get special treatment and would have overstayed her welcome.
Plus, she needed to go home.
Nevertheless, the tiny whimpers pulled at her heart as she brought the smaller hands that held her, up to her lips, kissing them.
“I’ll miss you too.”
And she hated the feeling of having to say goodbye to someone she loved.
-But Diana remembered something, something to make this parting more bearable, and in a flash, she dug through her bag, taking out a small black box, brand name engraved on it as she took Akko’s hands, the other confused as she was led to sit on the bed with Diana.
“Diana?”
“Akko.” The prodigy spoke, taking Akko’s left hand into hers after opening the box, revealing to small silver bands.
“Diana?!” The brunette’s heart swelled, tears welling up again as she cried, finding it difficult to accept such things.
Inserting the silver promise ring onto Akko’s pinky, Diana’s name carved neatly onto it, the heiress proceeded to pepper that finger with kisses, leading up to hand, then wrist, forearm, shoulder and even higher up, following Akko’s anatomy, planting kisses on her collarbone, neck, jaw and cheek. She even kissed Akko’s ear, moving in to place her lips on that cute button nose, up to the forehead and back down to the final destination, Akko’s lips.
After completing her journey, she looked into Akko’s hazy eyes, still registering everything that had just happened. “This is as much as I can do slowing down.” Diana admitted, bashful and slightly put-off by herself. “But I really, I sincerely want everyone to know you are mine, and I am yours.”
She cupped Akko’s cheek, running her thumb over it as Akko’s tears rolled down in minute rivulets, tainting Diana’s skin with sweet drops of rain.
“Diana… You are… are you sure?” Akko was still at the point of questioning whether all of this was real or not, but her girlfriend’s insistent nodding spoke all the answers clearly.
“I’ll wait for the day I can put a real one on you.” She spoke again, referring to the ring. “Not there,” She kiss the adorable pinky. “But here.” She placed a lingering kiss this time on Akko’s ring finger.
Akko giggled, making Diana curious as to what was so funny.
“You sure like kissing my hands.”
“Well, they certainly are beautiful.” Diana smiled, loving the laughter unique only to Akko. “Just like the rest of you.”
Akko felt another Diana-induced blush coming on, as the cause of it licked her lips hungrily while staring at Akko’s.
“And they aren’t the only things I like kissing.”
Their faces drew near again, and for who knows what time this was, they kissed. The felt their words put into action, into feelings.
“I love you.”

It was fun, the last few hours together before all the guests had to ride the van with the Kagari’s, Ryuunosuke taking them to the airport.
It would be a lie to say no tears were shed, but it was still as happy as a parting could get. No good byes were said, simply ‘See you later.’ And that was a promise Diana took to heart as she waved goodbye, riding up the escalator with her suitcase, willing herself to stay still and not run back into Akko’s arms and reassure her she wasn’t going anywhere.
Alas, fate was decided and they must separate for the time being.
It was truly puzzling, Diana had not felt the least bit jetlagged, and that was a true wonder- though, she could also say it was mainly due to the fact her mind had been occupied by other things such as how she missed Akko among other thoughts.
Even as Anna and other servants had come to pick her up and give her a pleasant welcome home, she found herself, guiltily, only half as excited as she would have been usually.
Her glumness continued throughout the night, into her quarters as she tried to count sheep as a means of falling asleep.
A ring broke her noisy peace.
“Hello, love.” Diana didn’t even need to check the digits on the smartphone she had bought, just for occasions such as these. If this was the only way to keep in touch with the love of her life, the cost was a tiny thing compared to the utter joy of hearing the girl’s melodic voice.
“I miss you.”
And Diana’s heart ached.
She felt tears trying to fight their way out, wanting release, and she had never felt this much pain or longing before. The dire need to touch and hold someone. Only Akko. Only she made Diana go mad with need and want.
“I miss you, too.” She replied, her emotions overflowing unbearably into her voice, into the call.
Talking for hours about anything really was Diana’s only way to relieve that longing, if only for these few short moments, though she knew she’d crave even more after this, like a drug that you tried to abstain from, but upon tasting it, you’d need more in your system.
That was just how addicting Akko and her love was.
Even the virtual hugs, and the phone kisses lightened and burdened Diana’s heart.
Just as they bid each other good night, Diana would dare not forget these words, waiting impatiently for the next time she’d be able to speak them out loud, face to face again.
“Akko?” It was so painful, only hearing the girl’s voice, unable to touch her, feel her warmth and kisses.
“Yes?” Indeed, it hurt so much, but she’d endure… a few weeks, a few months. They would meet again, that was for certain.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”

 A new semester, a new time for students to learn new lessons, get assigned new partners, teachers, classes. A fresh start again.
And here, with the wind blowing gently through blonde strands awaiting just outside the gates, Diana tapped her foot against the pavement, counting down the minutes to Akko’s arrival, her internal stopwatch resetting once more as Akko was still missing from her arms.
She gasped, surprise falling from her lips as she was momentarily blinded before a much desired, melodious sound filled her ears, a sweet, flowery fragrance wafting into her nose, and warm touches sent shivers down her spine.
Akko had infiltrated her senses.
Diana turned to the girl, seeing the witch she had missed so dearly, enveloping her in the tightest embrace they’ve had yet.
“I missed you so much.”
Akko only smiled, cupping Diana’s cheek, an action the heiress had been dreaming of for so long, and her next wish was about to be granted, the pair leaning in at the same time.
They were about to start a new life, school life, love life, again. Together.
Parting, that familiar murmur against each other’s lips filled Diana with life again, fully intent on making the most of living in the same place at the same time.
She took Akko’s hand in hers, leading her into the building and into the gates, winding through hallways and stairs to reach their favorite place, the library.
Trapping Akko against the shelves, the couple shared a smile before diving in to their last few moments of private time before the bell would ring.
Their matching promise rings glittered in the morning sunlight, reflecting its early rays that seeped in through the windows.
Diana embraced Akko tightly, her heart speaking everything for her, placed into words.
“I love you.”

Diana thought she would be the one to do it.
She seriously believed it would be her.
But now, in her seat, crying her heart out as she stared at the figure knelt before her, golden ring sparkling with that beautiful diamond that matched her eyes, lover’s name engraved on it, Diana admitted it was nice to be on the receiving end of such things.
In the end, Akko was the one who proposed. After her amazing trials with Diana’s family, she had finally gotten them to accept her, and here she was, living with her dream
And her dream had always been Diana.
Diana cried so much she ruined her make-up and hair, but Akko thought she was still the most beautiful lady in the world. She was so proud and happy, and loved Diana more and more each passing second as the Cavendish head could barely reply, head nodding rapidly as she jumped into Akko’s arms, hugging her tightly, kissing her all over as she completely forgot about the ring and was more content on drowning herself in Akko and her warm embrace.
Akko laughed, trying to return as many kisses as she could, before settling Diana back into her chair, presenting the ring again as Diana held out her own hand once more, still teary and tussled.
“This time, I’ll be the one to give you a promise for a lifetime.” Akko vowed, kissing Diana’s hand, doing the same pattern as her now-fiancée had done all those years ago with the promise rings.
And again, Akko finds her hands full of blonde hair and kisses, her face probably marked all over, but she didn’t really mind.
It was time to become happier than she already was.
It was time for them to join into the family they wanted to be.
It was time to welcome Diana home, cook her breakfast and all that.
It was time to say it again. Though revised, as Akko giggled, speaking such nostalgic words.
“Welcome my love, to your personal Hikari no Jukyo.”
“I love you.”

Mindful shopping: Learning to be deliberate about the things we buy and own
The older I get, the less I want or need. The older I get, the less I like to spend money. And when I have to buy something, I try to practice mindful shopping.
When I was younger, I wanted (and/or needed) all sorts of things. I wanted new clothes. I wanted tech gadgets. I wanted books. I was convinced that I needed a fast computer to be happy, not to mention a big house and lots of furniture. None of my shopping was mindful. It was mindless.
Now, at age fifty, buying things seems more like a hassle than a reward.
For one, buying something means I have to spend money — money that I'd rather keep for more important things, such as retirement. Or travel. Or beer. (Best of all: Travel and beer!)
Plus, there's the entire shopping process. It's a chore. If I need to buy a chainsaw, for instance (which I actually did this week), I have to research the best option. Then I have to find the best price. Then I have to order it or, worse, take time out of my day to go pick it up in person.
Then, after I buy a new thing, I have to store it. I have to dispose of the packaging, then add whatever I bought to my collection of Stuff. It becomes clutter in my life. (This is true whether the thing is actually clutter or not.)
I use my laptop computer all day every day, for instance, yet it still acts as mental (and physical) clutter. It's always here in the living room, sitting next to my recliner. I see it whenever I walk by. It's always on my mind.
I know I sound like an aging curmudgeon, but all of this is true. The older I get, the less Stuff I want — and the more I want to get rid of the Stuff I already own.
Now, I don't want to pretend that I don't buy things. I do. There's no question that I do. I even spend frivolously if I'm not diligent. But I'm far less likely to buy things than I used to. And when I do buy things, I tend to be purposeful about my purchases. I try to be a mindful shopper.
Let's use the chainsaw as an example.

In the olden days — like, 2009 — I would have driven to Home Depot and bought a chainsaw the moment I thought I needed one. It wouldn't have even been a question. (In fact, I did this very thing in 2004.) Today, I deliberate over purchases like this for weeks, even when I know I need a tool.
Kim and I currently own an acre of mostly-wooded land just outside of Portland, Oregon. We have lots of trees, and those trees have lots of limbs. I don't think we're supposed to go hacking away at the trees on the forested part of our property, but there are still plenty of woody problems inside the yard.
For example, in March I took out a cedar tree so that I could replace it with a small orchard. This might have taken a few minutes with a chainsaw, but I spent an hour chopping away with a hatchet and a pruning saw. When I was finished, I was left with an ugly stump. (This stump joined several other stumps left over from the previous owners.)
“That stump looks terrible,” Kim told me. “You need to get rid of it. And you should get rid of the other stumps too.”
“I know,” I said. “But I don't have the tools to do it.”
“Why don't you just buy a chainsaw?” she asked. “We'd use it all of the time.”
I knew she was right. I'm constantly climbing ladders to chop down limbs. Every year, we take out two or three small trees that have taken root in inconvenient locations. A chainsaw would be handy.
We could certainly rent a chainsaw when we need it. We often rent equipment. Generally, though, we only rent tools if they're things we don't anticipate needing again for many years. We rented a lawn aerator last year, for example. And after we accumulated a couple of projects that needed it, we rented a chop saw. We may rent a pressure washer in the near future.
It doesn't really make sense to rent a chainsaw, though. It's something I'll use several times each year. Usually when I find myself wanting one, I'm in the middle of a larger project. I don't want to make an hour-long round-trip to the hardware store to rent another tool. It'd break my flow. Plus, over the long term, the cost will add up.
So, owning a chainsaw makes sense. I ordered one from Amazon and it arrived yesterday. But that doesn't mean I'm happy about it. It was a hassle. And now it's yet another thing I have to store. But at least I was mindful about the purchase.
The Onus of Ownership
It's not just that I don't want to buy stuff. More and more, I don't want to own things.
I know I have to own some things. I have to own clothes, for instance. I have to own tools. I have to own furniture. I have to own my computer. It's nice to own some art and some books.
But so many of the things I own sit unused for weeks or months or years on end. It seems silly.
Two years ago, in a moment of weakness, I bought a Nintendo Switch. “This'll be fun!” I thought to myself when I bought it. And it was fun for a few hours. Now, though, it rests ignored in the TV room. The last time I used it was in November. I should sell it (or give it to somebody's children).
Meanwhile, books have become a burden in my life. I never thought I'd say that. You see, I love books — and I always have.
Ten years ago, in my first active campaign against clutter, I purged most of my 3000+ books. Still, I have too many. They're everywhere, and I don't like it. It's no longer fun. Gone are the days when I'd simply order whatever book I wanted off Amazon. Nowadays, I usually dread getting new books.
It used to be that I found owning things comforting. I'm not joking. It made me feel good to know that I had all sorts of books and tools and furniture and clothes. I don't feel that way anymore.
Whenever I feel overwhelmed by the things I own, I remember our tour of the U.S. by RV. We carried very little with us on that trip. It was liberating. When we stopped to overwinter in Savannah, Georgia, Kim and I rented a condo for six months. All we had in that condo was what we'd had in the RV. Having so little felt amazing.
Time to Tidy
What do I spend money on? The older I get, the more my spending is aligned with my values. I deliberately practice mindful shopping and mindful spending.
For me, that means I spend a lot on travel, both for work and for pleasure. Between October 2018 to October 2019, I will have made four trips to Europe (three for fun and one for work) and four domestic trips (all for work). That doesn't count local excursions by car.
At home, my biggest expense — by far — remains our food budget. Even though we're dining out much less frequently in 2019, I still spend more on food (and drink) than any other category.
I don't mind spending money on travel and food for a couple of reasons.
First, these are things I value. They enrich my life.
Second, they don't create clutter. They're not possessions.
Nobody would ever mistake me for a minimalist, but I definitely crave a simpler lifestyle than the one I have now. For me, that means having fewer things around me.
And if I want to own fewer things, I have to get rid of some of the Stuff I already own.
When I returned from France two weeks ago, I was a cleaning machine. This often happens when I get back from a long trip. After spending days or weeks living with little, I'm eager to make my living space as minimal as possible.
This time, I started with the bathroom. I emptied all of my drawers and cupboards, then methodically trashed anything I don't use regularly. I threw out old shaving cream and bottles of stale cologne. I tossed dozens of old sticky notes on which I'd scrawled my weight and bodyfat. When I put the room back together, I felt a sense of relief.
I want to do the same in the bedroom — but I'm scared. Purging old toothpaste isn't a costly decision. Thinning a wardrobe, however, means getting rid of clothing that cost real money at one point in the past. Sometimes, the recent past. (Yes, I realize I'm succumbing to the sunk-cost fallacy. But just because I understand this intellectually doesn't mean I can overcome the problem in practice.)
It may be time for me to remind myself of the KonMari method, to re-read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. I need outside encouragement that yes, I can do this — and that it'll all be for the best in the long term.
A Man with a Plan
Yesterday as I was driving to work at the box factory, I thought about what I'd own in an ideal world. Where would I live? What would I do? What would my life look like?
“I'm happy with the house,” I thought, “and I'm happy with Kim and the animals.” The basic infrastructure of my life is fine. I have a good partner, and we've deliberately selected a small house with a large outdoor living area. This is all great.
“But if I could buy everything from scratch, I'd own much less,” I thought. “I wouldn't have nearly as many clothes. I wouldn't own so many books. We wouldn't have crap in the storage shed at the bottom of the hill. We'd use that space as a tool shed instead.”
Driving home yesterday afternoon, I thought some more about this idea. What are some actual steps I can take to move from my current state of clutter and chaos to something more closely resembling this (hypothetical) ideal existence? I came up with a few ideas:
Implement a moratorium on buying. This shouldn't be difficult. It's merely formalizing a behavior I've already adopted. I'm ready to press “pause” on purchases for a few weeks or months until I've taken the next steps. This goes beyond mindful shopping to no shopping — at least for a little while.
Make a list (or several) of the things I want (or need) to own. Most of the time when I tackle projects like this, I do the reverse. I start with what I have and subtract. This is challenging. It quickly leads to decision fatigue. This time, I think it'd be interesting (and fun) to take an additive approach, to make lists of the items I'd own in my ideal life and work from there. What would my wardrobe look life? What books would be on my shelves? What tools would I have for the yard?
Go from space to space, ruthlessly purging the things I no longer need or want. I want to go full Marie Kondo on my life, being rational and realistic. If my aim is to create a capsule wardrobe filled with quality clothes, I need to get rid of a lot of crap. If books bother me so much, I need to thin my collection. I need to ask myself questions like: Am I really ever going to listen to my 100+ record albums again? (I don't even own a record player! Mine was destroyed by a “melting” pumpkin five years ago. For real.)
Be methodical and patient. Don't try to do this all at once. It's not possible to accomplish all of this in one day. Or one weekend. It is possible, however, to take fifteen minutes to sort the clutter in one kitchen drawer. Or, if I have an hour in the afternoon, I can pick through my photography gear to figure out which lenses I still use. (Do I use any of them? Or has my phone completely replaced my SLR?) If I'm diligent, I can probably process most of the house in a month.
This project excites me. It feels like doing this will clear both physical and mental baggage. I don't want to pretend like I think this will instantly make me a happier person — it won't — but I'm certain it'll bring a certain level of peace and calm to my life.
Kim gets a similar sense of serenity when the house itself is clean. For the first time together, we hired a housekeeper this week. For the past few days, Kim has been smiling and happy and she says it's because she loves walking from clean room to clean room.

Pretentious Pet Parents
I felt my face begin to flush.  My hands clenched into fits at my sides.  I tried closing my eyes and quickly counting to ten.  This proved to be ineffective.  My mouth opened and nothing but pure anger poured forth.
What could spark such outrage?  Had I stepped in a warm, brown present from one of my dogs?  Was it a sports game going horribly awry?  Did my husband forget to take the trash out yet again?  No, I was watching “My Cat From Hell.”
This particular episode featured a woman who had adopted a beautiful Bengal cat.  Her reasons?  She had always wanted a “designer cat.”  This breed attracted her because they “look cool.”  I could tell that I was not going to like this woman.
The cat basically wanted nothing to do with her.  If the woman approached, the cat threw out a quick paw and drew a scratch.  This sent the owner into a fit for the rest of the show.  She would ignore the cat, even refusing to look in its’ direction.
Jackson Galaxy did his best to be polite, but I could tell he was thinking exactly what I was:  She does not deserve to have this cat (or any animal for that matter)!  He asked if she ever interacted with the boisterous Bengal.  The woman’s response?  “I buy her toys.”
I watched in horror as she grabbed a feather stick and simply plopped the feather into the cat’s face.  Within seconds, the cat became bored and walked away.  Jackson told her that she was not engaging the cat at all.  “Be the bird,” he said.
The woman then admitted that she was still mad about the cat scratching her.  Jackson and I were blown away.  She showed no love to the cat at all, yet expected her furry friend to adore her at all times.
My initial reaction is that this woman should not be a pet owner.  She seemed more concerned about her looks than gaining the trust and love of her cat.  I fear that too many pet owners act the same way.
A former co-worker of mine had adopted a dog named Ginger.  At first, he/she gushed about how amazing and sweet the pup was.  Ginger seemed to fit into the family perfectly.
One day, the co-worker asked me for some advice.  He/she said that Ginger had begun to urinate, but only when he/she looked at her.  This immediately threw up a red flag to me.  There had to be something that this person was doing to make Ginger fearful enough to urinate just from eye contact.
I delicately probed and asked if there had been any recent changes in their daily routines.  In a moment of honesty, he/she said, “Well, Ginger wouldn’t go outside the other day, so I kick—scooted her out the door with my foot.”
I knew exactly what this meant.  He/she had kicked Ginger.  I kept my suspicions to myself because I did not want to ruin an opportunity to perhaps find the dog a better home.  Instead, I provided several suggestions and informed the co-worker to call or text me at any time.
Two weeks later, while shopping in Target, I received a text:   “Would you be interested in keeping Ginger?”  My heart dropped into my stomach.  As my husband will attest, I would love to keep every animal that is on this planet.  Sadly, our town has a strict limit on the number of dogs and cats that we are allowed to have.
I asked if there was any way that I could foster Ginger instead.  This way, she would be out of the harmful situation she was in with my co-worker and I could begin the search for a perfect forever home for her.  He/she wavered for a moment, but soon agreed.
As luck would have it, my mother and father-in-law came over for a visit and fell in love with Ginger.  She even won the heart of their established Min Pin, Kallee.  It was only after they officially adopted her did they find out that not only was Ginger heartworm positive, but she also had a cracked tooth and ear mites!
I cannot even begin to fathom allowing any of my fur babies to reach such a decline.  I would (and have) gone without in order for them to have the necessary care that they need.  They deserve nothing less.
Why do people adopt pets that they clearly have no intention of taking care of?  Many of the animals in local shelters and rescue groups have already had a horrible start to their lives.  They have been used for breeding over and over again for sheer profit.  Some have been physically abused for “fun.”  Still, others suffer from psychological traumas.
Adopting an animal is not something to be taken lightly.  To me, it should be taken as seriously as planning to have a human child.  There are numerous items that need to be considered before following through with an adoption.  The most important items being:
1.      Do you have enough time to devote to your new furry friend?
2.      Can you afford to care for your new companion, even when he/she gets sick?
I never knew that doggy dermatologists actually existed.  That is until our Chihuahua, Adriel, began losing her fur after having a skin infection.  We spent over $500 on skin biopsies, medications and appointments.  Similarly, when our 14 year old Chihuahua, Theo, developed glaucoma, we spent a pretty penny taking him to a veterinary ophthalmologist.  He had several eye tests and has been placed on $60 eye drops for life.  My husband and I are not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but we are willing to do whatever it takes to keep our furry family members happy and healthy.
But adopting animals is about more than just money.  There is also the time factor.  We, as humans, seem to be perpetually getting busier and busier.  Our weekends are filled with events and making preparations for the upcoming week.  Where does Fido fit into the hurricane that is life?
Simply buying food and toys for our pets is not enough.  They need to be showed that they are loved and treasured every day.  Dogs and cats need exercise, otherwise their boredom can come out in very destructive ways.  Our cats (and three-legged dog) go crazy for the laser pointer.  They will chase that little red dot all around the room.
Several of our dogs prefer to play with their toys solo.  Still, others love to play tug-of-war with their plush squeakies.  No matter how they choose to play, we always make time for individual tubby rubs and cuddles.  I want to make sure that all of our pets know just how much they mean to us.
These wonderful animals enrich our lives in so many ways.  They are a fantastic support system that can cheer me up on the most horrible of days.  Their kisses bring an instant smile to my face and a warmth to my heart.  Watching them interact with the world around them reminds me to take joy in the small things.
Potential pet parents also need to realize that every pet has an occasional bad day.  There will be accidents on the freshly vacuumed carpet.  Cats will have their moody days and adorn your leg with a fresh scratch.  In truth, they are just like us.  This does not make them any less deserving of unconditional love.
Thankfully, the woman on “My Cat From Hell” finally saw the light.  She stopped treating her designer cat as a fashion statement and actually began to take a genuine interest in its well being.  Play time became a flurry of interaction ending with snuggles on the couch.
Being a true pet parent means going beyond simply signing adoption papers.  It means truly committing to your new family member every day.  Pets are not meant to be status symbols, fashion statements or fighting machines.  They are meant to be loved unconditionally, which is exactly the kind of love that they give in return.

My initial reaction is that this woman should not be a pet owner.  She seemed more concerned about her looks than gaining the trust and love of her cat.  I fear that too many pet owners act the same way.
A former co-worker of mine had adopted a dog named Ginger.  At first, he/she gushed about how amazing and sweet the pup was.  Ginger seemed to fit into the family perfectly.
One day, the co-worker asked me for some advice.  He/she said that Ginger had begun to urinate, but only when he/she looked at her.  This immediately threw up a red flag to me.  There had to be something that this person was doing to make Ginger fearful enough to urinate just from eye contact.
I delicately probed and asked if there had been any recent changes in their daily routines.  In a moment of honesty, he/she said, “Well, Ginger wouldn’t go outside the other day, so I kick---scooted her out the door with my foot.”
I knew exactly what this meant.  He/she had kicked Ginger.  I kept my suspicions to myself because I did not want to ruin an opportunity to perhaps find the dog a better home.  Instead, I provided several suggestions and informed the co-worker to call or text me at any time.
Two weeks later, while shopping in Target, I received a text:   “Would you be interested in keeping Ginger?”  My heart dropped into my stomach.  As my husband will attest, I would love to keep every animal that is on this planet.  Sadly, our town has a strict limit on the number of dogs and cats that we are allowed to have.
I asked if there was any way that I could foster Ginger instead.  This way, she would be out of the harmful situation she was in with my co-worker and I could begin the search for a perfect forever home for her.  He/she wavered for a moment, but soon agreed.
As luck would have it, my mother and father-in-law came over for a visit and fell in love with Ginger.  She even won the heart of their established Min Pin, Kallee.  It was only after they officially adopted her did they find out that not only was Ginger heartworm positive, but she also had a cracked tooth and ear mites!
I cannot even begin to fathom allowing any of my fur babies to reach such a decline.  I would (and have) gone without in order for them to have the necessary care that they need.  They deserve nothing less.
Why do people adopt pets that they clearly have no intention of taking care of?  Many of the animals in local shelters and rescue groups have already had a horrible start to their lives.  They have been used for breeding over and over again for sheer profit.  Some have been physically abused for “fun.”  Still, others suffer from psychological traumas.
Adopting an animal is not something to be taken lightly.  To me, it should be taken as seriously as planning to have a human child.  There are numerous items that need to be considered before following through with an adoption.  The most important items being:
1.      Do you have enough time to devote to your new furry friend?
2.      Can you afford to care for your new companion, even when he/she gets sick?
I never knew that doggy dermatologists actually existed.  That is until our Chihuahua, Adriel, began losing her fur after having a skin infection.  We spent over $500 on skin biopsies, medications and appointments.  Similarly, when our 14 year old Chihuahua, Theo, developed glaucoma, we spent a pretty penny taking him to a veterinary ophthalmologist.  He had several eye tests and has been placed on $60 eye drops for life.  My husband and I are not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but we are willing to do whatever it takes to keep our furry family members happy and healthy.
But adopting animals is about more than just money.  There is also the time factor.  We, as humans, seem to be perpetually getting busier and busier.  Our weekends are filled with events and making preparations for the upcoming week.  Where does Fido fit into the hurricane that is life?
Simply buying food and toys for our pets is not enough.  They need to be showed that they are loved and treasured every day.  Dogs and cats need exercise, otherwise their boredom can come out in very destructive ways.  Our cats (and three-legged dog) go crazy for the laser pointer.  They will chase that little red dot all around the room.
Several of our dogs prefer to play with their toys solo.  Still, others love to play tug-of-war with their plush squeakies.  No matter how they choose to play, we always make time for individual tubby rubs and cuddles.  I want to make sure that all of our pets know just how much they mean to us.
These wonderful animals enrich our lives in so many ways.  They are a fantastic support system that can cheer me up on the most horrible of days.  Their kisses bring an instant smile to my face and a warmth to my heart.  Watching them interact with the world around them reminds me to take joy in the small things.
Potential pet parents also need to realize that every pet has an occasional bad day.  There will be accidents on the freshly vacuumed carpet.  Cats will have their moody days and adorn your leg with a fresh scratch.  In truth, they are just like us.  This does not make them any less deserving of unconditional love.
Thankfully, the woman on “My Cat From Hell” finally saw the light.  She stopped treating her designer cat as a fashion statement and actually began to take a genuine interest in its well being.  Play time became a flurry of interaction ending with snuggles on the couch.
Being a true pet parent means going beyond simply signing adoption papers.  It means truly committing to your new family member every day.  Pets are not meant to be status symbols, fashion statements or fighting machines.  They are meant to be loved unconditionally, which is exactly the kind of love that they give in return.
