Murphy, NC June 2017

I have traveled so much since I journaled last and I will make it a point to journal as many of those adventures as I can (even in back log). We will start with my recent visit to the beautifully quant Murphy, NC.

The road trip alone was beautiful. I drove in from TN along the Ocoee River. Lots of activities for the adventurous here a day trip away from Murphy.

I stayed in the historic downtown at a converted manor turned rental property. The location was perfect...walking distance to just about anything (yes, even in this small little town!). Though, I hear the nearby cabins and mountain views are gorgeous too :).

I spent my first day browsing the many shops including antiques, local arts & crafts & even organic/homeopathic products. The great thing about Murphy is the people. Every shop I went to I was warmly greeted...asked where I was from, told a little history, culture and even given tips about where to go next!

Here are my favorite stops along the way:

The Daily Grind: Coffee, Wine, live music, sandwiches and baked goods. Do feature some local art on the wall, artisan coffee and mugs. and next door...

The Curiosity Shop: A great place to purchase a book and then head over to drink some tea/coffee/wine/Guinness and ice cream (libation of choice) at The Daily Grind

Gallery 26: The artisan wood work in this shop is amazing. You can meet the artist himself and he will tell you all about the wood and technique he used. His wife, daughter and son all feature art in this shop as well including photographs, jewelry & crafts.

Blue Moon Elise: Whether you are shopping for some organic/homeopathic products or you are in the mood for yoga (studio upstairs) or massage...this is the place for you. I bought a lovely textile purse there that still smells like the store and I love it! The yoga was pretty darn awesome too. My only regret is not being there for their soap making seminar!

Henn Theatre: This is a one room theatre in the historic area which (besides the fact that it is historic and is still running) doesn’t necessarily make it a must see, but if you haven’t seen one of the 2 movies it features...this is a nice evening or mid afternoon activity right in the downtown area (particularly in the summer heat).

Valley River Brewery: Large tap selection, good bar food (try the beer battered onion rings) with large portions and quick service.

Chevelle’s: Full bar. Pub food (though they do feature a fairly tasty Chevelle salad). Feature live music during Sunday brunch (and are open Sundays...which is an important note since not all restaurants/stores are on Sundays).

Red Brick Deli: Perfect place for breakfast or lunch (closed for dinner). Very good sandwiches. Great service.

Shoe Booties cafe: Popular. Make reservations ahead of time for the upstairs bar (fills quickly). Featuring live music downstairs some evenings. Nutella “shoetini” is a must try dessert cocktail.

Riverwalk: Great place for a stroll along the Hiawassee river. Parts of it may flood after heavy rains (such as the Cypress and part of the fisherman’s loop). The wooded/gravel parts are the most scenic (south of the river).

Cherokee Cellars: Wine tasting featuring unique blends and grapes. Talk to the owners/makers themselves as they serve you. Educational and tasty.

Bistro 59: Hands down favorite dinner spot. High quality food. Great for date night. Fine service. Just all around amazing.

So @shoebootie works in New Brunswick and had to go to the office today. Around lunch time, she texts me today "what's good to get from @stuffyerfacenj?" naturally, as both someone who grew up eating there and a proud @rutgersu grad, I tell her the only correct answer: a boli. She got one and loved it, and was kind enough to bring me one home. Let me tell you, I haven't had a Stuff Yer Face boli in years, but this bad boy was every bit as good as I remember from the days of yore.
