Headlines read "Lucille Ball Rushed To Hospital With Shattered Leg!" I really do think that the first account of this event as scripted into the 5th season opener of 'Here's Lucy' is very much rooted in the truth of how Lucy broke her leg while skiing in Snowmass. A departure from the collision with another skier story told in many biographies, two eyewitnesses had this to say: “After lunch I helped Lucy into her skis, and we started down a gentle slope. We’d gone no more than 15 feet when it happened. Lucy lost her balance, caught an outside edge and simply slipped over. When the patrol finally got her into a splint, and then into a toboggan, we took her to the Snowmass clinic. From there they took her to Aspen Valley Hospital.”—Frank Zedlacher, Lucy’s ski instructor, article 1972. In 1972 Lucille broke her leg in a skiing accident. There are varying accounts of this incident. It's been reported by some biographers that Lucille was struck by a woman on the ski slopes resulting in the broken leg. Some reports say it was a man. (Some biographers do admit that there are gray areas to this story). In a 1972 entertainment magazine article quoting Lucille's ski instructor, Frank Zedlacher, he says this is what happened: "Lucy lost her balance...and simply slipped over."
