Jesse remembered how the idea of a girl laying her head on his shoulder would paralyze him a year or two ago, and throw him into a state of nervousness from which no amount of cold drinks could cool him down. And yet, the feeling of Lake resting against his chest was the most natural one in the world. She was his girlfriend, but a first one, so he didn't have much experience, aside from stories from older guys, the same ones he decided to not listen to anymore on any topics.

- This show is dumb. - Lake stated, matter-of-factly, pointing at the screen. - Yeah, I think it is. - Jesse responded, reaching for the bowl of snacks. - But it has some dumb people in it, so I like it.

Lake looked up.

- So, if you like me, does it mean I'm dumb? - she raised her brow. - Er, no, no, I didn't mean to-

The two looked at each other, before they erupted into fit of giggles. Afternoons like these were not uncommon ever since she moved in. Since Lake lived with them as a permanent guest, when Jesse's parents and younger brother were out, the two didn't have much more to do, especially on a lazy afternoon like this one.

The TV played a loud commercial, but it didn't bother the young couple that took solace in their arms, mashing their lips together in a second, longer kiss.

BTD2 My thoughts on Ren

I covered my thoughts long ago on all of the ��Till Death Do Us Part” game characters, but I never really took the time to talk about my thoughts about the main series “Boyfriend to Death” characters. I have actually talked about many of these characters through various different posts. But otherwise, there haven’t been that many posts dedicated specifically to certain BTD characters.

These posts will mostly be about my own opinions and views (a rough analysis more than anything). I may end up focusing on multiple aspects of the character, or just one particular one if I think it defines them best (we’ll see). For those that have read some of my other posts, there likely WILL be some thoughts I’ve stated before that I’ll simply be re-iterating here. But there may also be some new stuff in here if it happens to come to mind, or because I’ve simply not had the time before to go over such a topic.

It will take a while to get through all 8, so please have some patience and just check back later if it looks like I don’t have a post up yet for a character you’re really interested in. I will also be talking through these under the assumption that you’ve played/read all the routes (so I might mention but not go into explicit detail on a scene).

Fun Fact: It’s INCREDIBLY tough for me to pick a favorite among Gatobob’s characters. She’s done a really good job with making each of them incredibly unique. There are aspects I love about all the characters, and it’s hard to figure out what I liked best. I do believe that my order of preference still remains Strade < Lawrence < Ren. We got teased with Ren before BTD2 came out, but I was still the most interested in Lawrence pre-BTD2. While Lawrence didn’t disappoint, Ren just surprised me in more ways than I thought he would.

You know what’s one of the best things about Ren? Of the entire BTD cast, he has the most complete arc of any of the characters. When BTD2 hit, there were a few cameos of characters from the first cast (very brief or just fun extras), but only two returned from the first game as part of the main BTD cast: Akira and Ren. Fitting considering both were not the main baddies of the first game (though you got a little more interaction with one rather than the other). But the thing with Vincent is he came off more as a reboot of Akira (with the amnesia and personality change). Ren’s story was definitely more of a sequel to his original story. He’s the same character we saw, but this time around we see just how much the events of the first game affected him.

As you play through the game, I say there’s basically three different personality types (or state of mind, whichever makes more sense) Ren can portray: dominant, submissive, and neutral. If you told this to someone who hadn’t played the games, they might think the character either has some kind of personality disorder, or was poorly crafted (shoving too many different personality types into the same character could become problematic). But the amazing part is all three of these types make COMPLETE sense for Ren. The “neutral” state is what I imagine he was like before meeting Strade; A small, friendly guy who’s into video games and some anime (according to his room). When we meet him at the bar, especially compared to Lawrence, Ren seems perfectly fine. His “submissive” state is something he obviously developed as a survival tactic when he was held captive by Strade. Very nervous and eager to please, it’s what he had to do if he wanted to live after being kidnapped. Finally, his “dominant” state is something he learned and emulated from Strade himself. Living with Strade definitely warped Ren’s mind in a lot of ways. We get the feeling in the game that YES he understood that Strade was a bad person, and Ren didn’t like the pain that he had to go through. He also didn’t help Strade when he was dying on the floor. However, we also do see that Ren had simultaneously become very attached to his captor (I believe he even gets mad if you say what Strade and Ren had was fake). It’s very possible that Ren looked up to Strade in a way. Ren may have even come to the conclusion that if he wanted to take charge and have things go the way he wanted, he should start acting like Strade.

What state of mind Ren ends up in towards the end of the game is solely based on how the MC reacts to Ren. I also liked the little touch where his clothes would reflect how he was feeling: Strade’s shirt= confident, White shirt= scared, Gray clothes= unsure? Again, for any other character, this could have come off as poor writing (having such drastic changes in personality in such a short span of time). But the reason I can say this works great for Ren is because we know his backstory. We know EXACTLY what he had to go through, and it leads me to believe that Ren has become very unstable. It’s a little funny to compare him to Lawrence here. Lawrence is definitely the more unstable of the two I’d say. Lawrence is very socially awkward and has a hard time connecting with…well reality in general. Ren on the other hand seems perfectly fine on the surface.

Like I said earlier, at the bar he seems like a very friendly guy. When he brings you to “his” house later on, he’s even a good host at the start. One of my favorite scenes in Ren’s route is when he goes to grab/make some food and you finally have a chance to take a look around at your surroundings. The shift in music is great here! You notice the chain and neck collar and start to panic. But Ren just walks back into the room casually, not seeming too perturbed by the situation. That I’d say is the first big sign that Ren isn’t quite as sane as you’d like to believe he is. His motive for what he does is rather simple and sad; He’s lonely. But it’s the lengths he’ll go to for keeping someone his friend forever. What’s more, his idea of what kinds of things will strengthen the bond between himself and the MC are rather twisted. You could be as nice and chill as possible about being chained up with a shock collar on (which Ren will be ecstatic after) but he will STILL end up bringing Lawrence over for you two to kill together.

It’s very likely that Ren thought he had developed a special bond with Strade because of all the depraved activities that had occurred. Kind of along the lines of…sharing dark secrets and pain maybe even being a form of intimacy? Did Strade feel the same? I honestly doubt he felt much more for Ren than his as his “favorite pet.” Ren though did seem to develop a form of Stockholm Syndrome as a result of the trauma, and now without Strade he’s driven into despair from loneliness. This is why I think he tries to replicate the situation with Strade and himself, but now with the MC. Still, Ren ISN’T Strade.

First off, I believe Ren was probably a kind individual before meeting Strade. This part of his personality was also seen both in BTD as well as BTD2. And he didn’t kidnap MC for pure sadistic pleasure like Strade did with his victims. He just wanted a permanent friend. So he treats you much better than Strade. That’s the first difference. The second biggest difference is that while Ren can try to copy Strade’s more dominant and aggressive states, he can be knocked off his high horse due to his past trauma. Hell, you can overpower and kill Ren! The only other person in BTD2 you were able to kill by yourself without assistance was Lawrence. Lawrence had to be SLEEPING though for you to do this.

Poor Ren is very confused honestly. I wouldn’t call him a bad guy, but he’s definitely developed some immoral habits and views on friendships as a result of being held captive by Strade. He’s a very tragic character. I really loved the ending where you actually managed to talk to him, convince him to let you leave, and gave him your phone number so you guys could stay in touch. I feel like this is the best ending for Ren to really recover. The other endings just reinforce either his submissive survival state of mind, or his dominant and more sadistic traits. For Ren to really have a normal life again though, starting a friendship the NORMAL way would be best. Nice touch also that Ren has his gray clothes for this ending (what I consider a sign of his “neutral” state). You hit right between that state of fear and confidence. Only bad part about the ending was that Lawrence still ended up dying. These games have a tendency for SOMETHING bad to happen no matter what route you take though, so what can I say? Also I had died like…for several hours straight playing Lawrence’s route before Ren’s. So I probably wasn’t as miffed about him dying by that point :P

Of course it’s a nice bonus that he’s a fox boy too. I can imagine he’d be fun to cuddle with too. Sorry just had to say that, but I think why I really liked Ren the best was that his kind of storyline is stuff I really enjoy. I loved forced captivity scenarios by someone who DOESN’T actually want to kill you. They just want your companionship (whether friend or lover, Ren doesn’t seem to mind either way). It was actually a really nice change of pace to have a character in the games whose main objective was to keep you alive rather than kill you. Ren still CAN kill you though, so he’s earned his spot in the line-up. But in some endings you have to work a little to get him to kill you (I think the quickest kill is where you refuse to kill Lawrence or let Ren kill him?).

I can tell by the sheer number of endings alone that Gato put a LOT of thought into Ren’s route, and I really do appreciate that. The soundtracks used for Ren’s route were also some of my favorites. Definitely worth the playthrough and getting all the endings.

P.S. To any of the readers who happen to also visit my blog for the yandere content, here’s my quick opinion on Ren. “I” don’t personally consider him a yandere. The quick and dirty reason I can give is that I just view him as incredibly lonely and wanting ANYONE as a companion (either as a friend or lover, doesn’t matter). After all, MC wasn’t even his original target (it was Lawrence). HOWEVER, it is perfectly fine if you consider Ren a yandere yourself. He definitely has the most yandere traits out of the entire BTD and BTD2 cast. That I won’t argue with. My own personal scale of “How yandere are Gato’s characters?!” goes as such: Strade < Lawrence < Ren.
