gonna say smth about a ballad of songbirds and snakes even though i havent read the book and only saw trailers and listened to the olivia rodrigo song

i had a friend who watched the movie and said "it was good but it wasnt really the hunger games" and yeh sounds about right! from what im getting the prequel is built to be aesthetically completely different from the trilogy. the overarching story is entirely different, its focusing on an actual love story/a sort of relationship bw two characters for the major arch of the film, rather than fit that into a saga about fighting the fascist regime

which is not to say the the prequel is just a simple nd shallow story set in the hunger games' world of atrocities, because the relations bw the two characters are still built with that tension in mind. but it should be just ever so slightly separated from those atrocities, only for you to get hit in the face with them when it inevitably tears the characters apart

and thats why i honestly really love the title - its a ballad, its a strange forgotten story, its something just a little different and unknown in this setting. despite only being a few decades b4 the main plot its still set in an othered tone. something that diverges aesthetically from anything you could expect from the hunger games

especially since its a character we know from the trilogy, especially since its so bizarre to see him young and compassionate and full of emotion. its not impossible, it isnt out of character, not really. its just unthinkable - which only adds to that air of the unlikely story about an unlikely relationship

even lucy gray (whom again i only know from trailers) stands out in a way that she could only be seen as a myth through the lenses of the trilogy - as in, through the standard we, the viewers who know how the country looks in its future, expect to see. but shes unique - her attitude towards the capitol, towards snow himself, is defiant and rebellious in a way we never see from anyone aside from those who eventually knock the capitol down

and again, she stays within its limits - right up to the end. the only spoiler i know is what happens to her at the end of the movie, which is the aforementioned punch in the face of the world and its circumstances - such a character doesnt stay, doesnt get an ending of settling down in the system. without knowing id already guessed she either dies or runs off, because theres isnt another option for an end to this ballad. only smth that would truly pin down the story aesthetically, and let us fill in for ourselves the gap of the next few decades in snow's life

and tbh thats why ive been listening to "cant catch me now" on repeat today. bc its so perfect for this tone, for the notion of a forbidden and lost story, which only serves to add a bit of shadow and context to the cold and heartless character we see in the trilogy. the melody is so gentle and free, really ties up the story of these two characters, the final and bottom-line principle we now know of the betrayal and anger snow carries inside him. no sympathy or pity, just acceptance that although there used to be something good in him, it had long since died. all the same longing and emotion, with understanding for the hurt and the pain under the layers of cruelty

from what i gather the country in the movie is set with technology that is perceived to us as just a little outdated for the trilogy, and same with the fashion. and along with all the callbacks/callforwards to the trilogy it only help to build this story as a magical ballad, myth, legend of this world, something so big yet so delicate and special that set in motion the inevitable uprising decades later. the same spark that we saw light up in the trilogy had started burning here. absolutely magical

honestly im interested to hear if i got any of this right. and also do you guys recommend the movie is it good lmk im considering watching it

oh SO many reasons. most of the chars are openly queer in some way, buncha anticapitalistic messages, extreme on-screen gore/mutilation, all that fun stuff

9.if your story got a video game adaptation/spin off, what would it be like?

Probably something akin to paper mario or chicory! one of those top-down rpgs that mix visual styles together, like a digital collage! (think the witch labyrinths from madoka magica)

17.describe the "required reading" to understand your vision. be as pretentious as possible.

mmnot sure actually! I suppose a high recommendation is Who Framed Roger Rabbit to get the idea of the pure normal guy (or gal in this case)/cartoon thing wackiness that you cant see anywhere else, vitrinefield (and sparkletopia) is in the realm of psychological horror, but the comedy that contrasts and even Blends with it in some cases is comparable to that movie!

20.your ocverse just got a movie trilogy a la hunger games style. how have they horribly mangled your message/theme so that the movies are now a showcase of what the original was condemning?

AUGGH probably the whole theme of grief!! vitrinefield at its core is abt the loss of a loved one and finding ways to cope with it, i think ppl would only take away the horror elements in the story x.[ 21.you have been given unlimited funds to make your story idea a reality. what are you sparing no expenses for?

WELL the way im gonna be running it, its gonna be independent, but im absolutely paying anyone whos helping me properly!! 22.you have been given unlimited funds to make two adaptations of some sort, however you cannot make any other adaptations of any other sort. which two formats do you choose?

hmm... definitely a comic! but the 2nd choice is harder!! maybe a game thing that shows off either the b plot of a selection of chars or a prequel sorta thing?

idk if you've already read it and what you think if so (I don't follow you i've just found this blog by randomly clicking on blogs) but when you said someone needs to find a way to make the hunger games about grooming I had to run to your ask box and start preaching the ballad of songbirds and snakes gospel. but its literally so interesting and it isn't talked about enough!!! i’ve got some goals for the summer after my exams are done and before i go off to uni and im bored so here’s a list!

knitting some leg warmers - want them ready by autumn and im very bad at knitting so this is gonna be interesting

read at least 3 books; i’ve already started “little women” and “capture in the rye” has been sat on my shelf for too many months. third one may possibly be the new hunger games prequel if i decide to buy it OR i’m finally gonna try read frankenstein.

write some stuff - ideally i want to spend at least an hour a week just writing idc what it is but i think i’m gonna start with fanfic bc i can loll maybe i’ll progress to my own ideas later

okay! :) (I’m gonna leave out hp and Rick riordan’s books since most people have already read them, but I do recommend them!)

im gonna go in chronological order of me reading them 😝

A Series of Unfortunate Events - I love these bitches even though they make me wanna pull out my hair 🥲 please let these kids be happy omg 🥲 anyway I LOVE Lemony Snicket’s writing style and I adore the Baudelaire babes so 9.5/10 (the -0.5 is because I don’t like the last book it was too underwhelming)

Pretty Little Liars - Yes there’s novels <3 I loved these when I first read them and I learnt plenty about sexuality and stuff from these books buuuut looking back there’s plenty of issues 😬 I’m not gonna go into too much detail but one of my issues with this series is that there’s the bury the gays trope 😒 even 12 year old me with zero knowledge of queerdom was like “why does everyone except the lesbian have a romantic partner by the end?? This is so unfair??” smh. 3/10

The Hunger Games - MY BELOVED!! Take the throne baby ily and I love these books even more as time passes even though it’s been years since I last read them. 10/10

Divergent - Teen me was obsessed with the factions and stuff but shhhh let’s not talk about that. Loved the first two books but the third one just fell flat. 7/10

The Fault In Our Stars - Loved the prose and writing in this but it didn’t make me cry… maybe I’m just heartless oof. Anyways, 9/10

The Selection Series - LOVED the first book but then it just got so boring 😭 Please don’t write two full books that’s just ninety nine percent love triangle, people 😭 I really like the characters which is a plus tho. Honestly the main downside is the FUCKING LOVE TRIANGLE which was so unnecessarily stretched out 😭 I’m not even gonna talk about the sequel duology lol. 5/10

All The Wrong Questions - This is not only written by Lemony Snicket but is also ABOUT Lemony Snicket so it’s obviously amazing 😘 I was gay for Ellington Feint even before I knew I was gay lmao 🥲 10/10

Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda + Leah On The Offbeat - I’M LOVE THEMMMMMM 😍😍😍 I loved the second book a little less than the first tho, mostly because it felt like a sequel written for the sake of a sequel but I still loved getting to see Leah’s POV and HER AND ABBY 🥺🥺🥺❤️❤️❤️ Anyways yeah 10/10

Carry On series - I once saw someone describe this as “Harry Potter but gay” and I second it. I still have to get to the third book and ngl I’m a little scared cause the second book made it clear that Simon and Baz are Immortality Angst 2.0 😭😭😭😭 Still love it tho!! 9/10 (-1 cause the second book felt a lil slow. I just don’t like it when a book is paced slower than it’s prequel)

Mo Dao Zu Shi /The Grandmaster Of Demonic Cultivation - THIS BOOK IS FUCKING DEPRESSING!!! Or books?? The official English translation isn’t out yet so I had to rely on a fan translated copy but!! This book is just!! 😍😍😍😍 Like I said it’s depressing af and every few chapters you’re gonna sit down and reflect on the wholeass butterfly effect shit in the flashbacks that lead you to where you are right now and you’re gonna be like “If only X thing hadn’t happened :(“ there’s thankfully a happy ending tho!! Anyway someone please give my boy Wei Wuxian a hug please and thank you. 10/10

Red, White and Royal Blue - I binge read this in the middle of the pandemic and I just!! Loved it!! I want to see this book in a movie theatre omg you just know it’d the kind of movie where the audience keeps screaming 😭 I rarely scream in movie theatres but I’d do it for this babe <3 There’s just so much softness and even LITERAL CHILLS and… yeah. 10/10

RWRB was the last non-tsc book I read so I guess this is the end of this list 😁 thanks for the ask!!

cluna you’re literally so cool! you work through them? help couldn’t be me. i get super annoyed and if it’s not working i’ll just let it go and write something else instead shskdhdksk. for instance, i was working on this fic two months ago and i got really far into it when i hit a writers block. so, its just been collecting dusts for months now. a couple days ago i accidentally stumbled upon it and realize the potential it had so i might pick it up sksjdkd. i was literally prepared to just let it rot like so many other fics i write. so yeah idk sometimes i just give up because it’s easier even if it hurts me bc i spent so much time writing them sjshdkdj. yikes.

right?? and when you write a fic that takes place during the day you can get inspired by the atmosphere outside!! and yes!! i have to study outside i can’t get anything done at home. i used to be able to do that when i was younger but now it feels sooo impossible. especially with online school and stuff. either i go to a library, cafe or school. although most of these are closed now so i have to book a room somewhere to study. do you have a specific area at home where you write or can you just sit down anywhere and study?

for sure!! if i had the space i’d absolutely consider buying more books. right now i just have them scattered around everywhere (even some in my makeup drawer shdjdh). do you have a bookshelf? 🥺 that’s so pretty...! what are some of your other favorites btw? oh grade school is basically class 1 to 9... so from 6 years old to 15? girl no worries i know how difficult it is to understand all of that. when my friends used to explain their countries school systems before i’d just sit like owl eyes.
