A bit of a weird question, but I might be moving out of my home state to minnesota, specifically minneapolis, because being trans down here is rather rough. Do you have any advice for living in the state? Cool hidden spots? What to do for a person who's never experienced a snowy winter?
Alrighty, a few things I can mention - some of it is secondhand so don't take my word for it, but it'll be helpful. -Trans healthcare (and quality of healthcare) is pretty good in the state in my experience. You SHOULD be able to find the resources you need, though bear in mind while quality is good, price is no different - shit's still expensive everywhere because health care is itself expensive, but any other Minnesotans here feel free to reblog or chime in the replies with anything particularly useful or helpful. -Alrighty, your winter experiences will be slightly different depending on if you're living in the suburbs or the city itself. In an apartment in the city? You're probably fine - I'm assuming relying on public transportation, of which there are several options like the buses or light rail, though I know people from other cities who come to Minnesota say our public transport is lacking compared to other major cities. What I can say is that with the winter, unless it's a REALLY bad storm or the temperature drops to dangerous levels (we're talking degrees below zero), everything should still be open and running. -If you have your own car, during the winter keep weighted things in it - a cement block, bags of sand/salt, etc. Increased weight helps keep you from slipping. It's not perfect but it helps. Consequently, if you lose control on the ice, turn INTO the skid and pump the brakes - don't just press it flat, repeatedly pump the brakes to regain control. -If you have a house and a front walk/driveway, SHOVEL AND SALT. Overhangs on houses drip water when the temperature is right for melting, but the temperature will usually drop and freeze. Salt that area to either prevent it from freezing or make it easier to chop through with an ice chipper. Shoveling is just necessary depending on the severity of the snow (usually anything more than an inch or two should be shoveled) both for safety and because mail carriers will not deliver if you don't. -This year we had a reeeaally bad winter. Multiple heavy snowstorms that required going out to shovel multiple times during the day. Get warm clothes, wear layers - especially until you're used to it. However, most years it's fine. Light snowfall during winter, covers everything, maybe one bad storm but most of the time tolerable. -As for stuff to do - TONS! Minnesota has a thriving community of nerds, artists, performers, and just talented people in general. We have two major zoos - one of them paid, one free (Como Zoo), multiple parks and indeed Land of 10,000 Lakes so lots of lake beaches to enjoy swimming or fishing if that's your thing. The Science Museum remains one of the coolest places to learn stuff on various science topics even into adulthood. Conventions are relatively plentiful, though as a warning some cons are for-profit and have some... questionable leadership, look into them before deciding to go - particularly on the anime con front, but we have sci-fi/fantasy cons aplenty, too. The Mall of America is a big, big place with tons of fun stores and whatnot, including the former Camp Snoopy (currently Nickelodeon Universe). The Walker Art Center has an amazing statue garden, including the iconic Cherry and Spoon fountain. There's also the amusement park Valley Fair, which during Halloween becomes Valley Scare with spooky attractions in the neighboring area that's used for the annual Renaissance Festival. -Minnesota is a fairly large state. Not Texas big, but since it's mostly plains and hills, a lot of it is spread out and getting from one city to another usually requires going on freeways (we're also weird because we have left exits on some parts of freeways). If you don't have your own vehicle, you may want to consider getting one just to get to farther places. That's all I've got off the top of my head! Good luck with your move and remember: we only have two seasons here - Winter and Road Construction.

Bau beach near Rome was the first of several Italian beaches to be specifically arranged to be friendly to dogs, in 1998.  The dog friendly beaches by the sea and on Lake Como are providing special services this summer to deal with the heatwave which is affecting dogs as badly as humans.  There are shelters and showers for the dogs, and cold drinks and ice creams for their owners.
Picture, Welcome in Rome
What a fun place!  Thank you🐼

Preparations were made for the event; congratulatory visits were received; and all wore a smiling appearance. I shut up, as well as I could, in my own heart the anxiety that preyed there, and entered with seeming earnestness into the plans of my father, although they might only serve as the decorations of my tragedy. A house was purchased for us near Cologny, by which we should enjoy the pleasures of the country, and yet be so near Geneva as to see my father every day; who would still reside within the walls, for the benefit of Ernest, that he might follow his studies at the schools.
1818
Preparations were made for the event; congratulatory visits were received; and all wore a smiling appearance. I shut up, as well as I could, in my own heart the anxiety that preyed there, and entered with seeming earnestness into the plans of my father, although they might only serve as the decorations of my tragedy. Through my father's exertions, a part of the inheritance of Elizabeth had been restored to her by the Austrian government. A small possession on the shores of Como belonged to her. It was agreed that, immediately after our union, we should proceed to Villa Lavenza, and spend our first days of happiness beside the beautiful lake near which it stood.
1831
The change here is leftover from the change to Elizabeth's backstory way at the beginning of the novel. But what I find interesting about it is the way it gives Elizabeth (and by extension, Victor) some degree of freedom in their marriage. In 1831 they will have a house and possibly money of their own. It's even in Elizabeth's name, which while she doesn't get it until she is on the cusp of marriage, still gives her more independence than 1818 Elizabeth really has. Of course, she has no desire to use said independence or resources for anything other than building a life with Victor as far as we're shown, but it's still interesting.
1818 Elizabeth is the one who expressed regret at not having the freedom to go see the world like Victor. And she doesn't get any inheritance of money of her own. In fact, Victor as well is dependent on his father still for the house. A house specifically chosen, even, so that Alphonse can still visit them "every day." There is no escape from his father's expectations, and in fact all of this is his father's plans rather than his own.

If there are doubts, we are still in the Holocene. But don't discard the Anthropocene! | Se há dúvidas, ainda estamos no Holoceno. Mas não jogue o Antropoceno no lixo!
(PART I - PARTE I) - This is a opinion column about this Science’s article. Be gentle. | Essa é uma coluna de opinião sobre o artigo da Science. Seja gentil.
🇬🇧
A panel of geologists has rejected the proposal to formalize the Anthropocene as a new geological epoch. The Anthropocene was suggested in the 1950s to mark a distinct geological era characterized by the overwhelming impact of human activities on the planet. The rejection of the proposal indicates that the geologists on the panel did not find sufficient evidence or consensus to support the formal recognition of the Anthropocene.
The decision was described as definitive by Philip Gibbard, a geologist at the University of Cambridge and secretary-general of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), the body responsible for organizing the geological timescale. The rejection does not necessarily negate the idea that human activities have had a profound impact on the Earth, but suggests that specific criteria and evidence required to define a new geological epoch were not met.
This decision is likely to spark ongoing discussions and debates within the scientific community regarding the Anthropocene and the recognition of human influence on the Earth's geological timeline. It is important to note that scientific understandings and classifications can evolve over time as new research emerges, and the rejection of the proposal does not diminish the ongoing concern about the environmental impact of human activities. Some opponents of the Anthropocene proposal did not doubt the enormous impact of human influence, including climate change, on the planet. However, some felt that the samples/markers used to define the epoch - about 10 centimeters of mud from Canada's Crawford Lake, capturing the global increase in fossil fuel burning, fertilizer use, and atomic bomb fallout that began in the 1950s - are not sufficiently definitive.
This criticism suggests that, while there is consensus on the significant impact of human activities, some scientists may question the specific choice of a geological marker to characterize the onset of the Anthropocene. The proposal mentioned Crawford Lake mud as a representative sample of this period, but the raised objection suggests that some geologists may prefer clearer or more comprehensive criteria to define a new geological epoch. This definitional issue may have contributed to the rejection of the proposal by the panel of geologists.
Others questioned whether it is possible to fix a single date for the onset of humanity's broad planetary influence: why not consider the rise of agriculture? Why not the vast changes that occurred with European encroachment on the New World? "The Anthropocene epoch was never deep enough to understand human transformation of this planet," says Erle Ellis, a geographer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, who resigned last year in protest from the AWG (Anthropocene Working Group).
These questions highlight the complexity of defining a specific date for the onset of widespread human influence on the planet. Some argue that events like the rise of agriculture or the arrival of Europeans in the New World were equally significant and deserve consideration. Erle Ellis's resignation suggests that the controversy surrounding the Anthropocene proposal may be related not only to specific geological issues but also to broader disagreements on how to adequately characterize human influence on Earth over time.

🇧🇷

Millionaire banker Massimo Segre accused his fiancee of cheating on him in front of distinguished guests

Italian high society has been left reeling after the wedding of a millionaire banker in Turin took a dark turn, when the groom accused his bride of cheating in a speech at the engagement party causing a huge public spat between the pair.

Massimo Segre, 64, gathered guests at his mansion in Turin, to celebrate his upcoming nuptials to Cristina Seymandi, 47.
But instead of the usual loving speech you may expect to hear about a bride-to-be, Massimo instead accused his future wife of cheating, to the shock of Torinese high society.
Over a lavish banquet, he said: 'I want to give Cristina the freedom to love.
'Specifically, to love another person; a notable lawyer, who she clearly cares about more than me'.

'Dear Cristina, I know how much you are in love with him mentally and sexually,' he added.
'And I know that before him you had a relationship with an industrialist acquaintance.'
Stunned, Cristina looks around the room of some 150 guests for support as her fiancé shares painful photos of his partner with another man.
'Don't think it pleases me to look like a cuckold in front of all of you,' Massimo then tells his friends, clearly devastated by his partner's alleged betrayal as the event goes silent.
'Cristina is so good at telling her truths, that I couldn't leave her alone to narrate the reason why I'm ending [our] life together tonight.
'It's a banal story of infidelity, even premarital. I am so disappointed,' he says. 'I am heartbroken.'

He then wishes her well, before telling her to go to Mykonos with her lover, as it is already paid for.
As soon as the speech finished, the lights dimmed and Massimo left the stage.
Italian media reported that guests were annoyed at being 'used' as part of the show.
Stunned guests stared on in silence unsure what to think.
Since the engagement party, a video taken by one of the guests has gone viral, leading to Cristina to become the subject of death threats.
In a letter to the director of the Zona Bianca TV news programme, Christina said Massimo had committed an act of 'psychological violence' and had 'meticulously planned his revenge'.
She added that she had a valuable sapphire ring given to her by Massimo's mother to mark their engagement which had 'mysteriously disappeared' 15 days before the party.
Speaking to the Times, Cristina's adviser said she will be taking legal action for 'reputational damage' against he former fiance.
'She has suffered very serious attacks on social media and threats from Italian citizens. It has been traumatic,' she said.

Her lawyer,  Claudio Strata, added the banker had 'intentionally humiliated her'.
'The letter was read out in front of dozens of people and it was captured in a video that was sent to the newspapers. We don't think this was improvised.'
Massimo categorically denies having published the video, let alone having allowed it to be filmed.
He has since accused Cristina of stealing €700,00 (£598,000) from the couple's joint account, but she says the money was transferred with his consent before the relationship ended.
Cristina snapped back after the event in an interview with La Stampa.
She said that the bags for Mykonos 'were already packed' and urged onlookers to reserve judgement: 'Within every family, the dynamics are very complex and difficult to understand from the outside.'
She said at the time she thought: 'He's gone crazy'.
'He was very tired at the time,' she said.
'I am sure there's someone behind him who fanned the flames. In short, manipulated him.'
She also noted: 'The work stands and I can't afford to lose it.'
'My professional life requires me to react and remain lucid. I will think about possible protections in civil and criminal matters.'
Cristina  summed up: 'It was a farce, let's face it. Serious things are resolved another way.'
'Now I will consider whether to sue him,' she said.
Viviana Ferrero, former vice president of the Turin city council and friend of Cristina , described the put-down as a 'sexist lynching'.
She said: 'Two things hurt me, the end of a beautiful love story and the lynching in which Cristina it's been going on for days. A sexist, chauvinist, violent, horrendous lynching.
She went on: 'Dirty laundry is washed in the family and they, even if for a short time, were a very special family.
'And they could have been one of the most beautiful couples there were, because they combined so many qualities.
'I don't rejoice when the rich cry.'
Massimo's mother, Franca Bruna Segre, was also known as a key figure in Italian finance, at the top of Banca Intermobiliare before her son became its financier.
The 64-year-old is also a director of Directa Sim, a company dealing in online trading, and has involvement in other sectors including health and media.
Complicating matters, Cristina is professionally tied into some of these businesses, listed on LinkedIn as a director of Directa Sim since February.
She also has been named CEO of Savio Thesan Spa, a company she joined by taking over his shares through the recently established Hope SRL.
Cristina is the daughter of a renowned accountant from Turin and has held roles in politics and business over an eventful career.

In 2021, she backed the mayoral campaign of centre-right candidate Paolo Damilano in Turin, who promised to make her deputy if he won.
Damilano lost in the run-off to centre-left candidate Stefano Lo Russo, and as a candidate for councillor Cristina was able to collect only 318 'preferences'.
Segre and Cristina met around the time of the pandemic but had their wedding delayed twice as a result.
Finally, the plans had been made and 'around 200' guests invited to the lawn overlooking the Mole Antonelliana, a landmark in Turin, to finally announce the date in October.
But what started with general thanks to the audience for coming took a sudden turn when Segre took the chance to out his partner.
Massimo Segre's speech in full
'Tonight, I'd like to gift Cristina the freedom to love. To love a person, a known lawyer, who she clearly cares more for than me, and who I think managed to become obnoxious just to avoid slighting me.
'My dear Cristina, I know how in love you are, both mentally and sexually, how did you manage to self-confide? And I know that before him you had a relationship with a well-known industrialist.
'My dear friends, don't believe that this pleases me to be a cuckold in front of you all, but Cristina was so good at telling her truths that I couldn't leave it to her to tell the narrative of why I will be leaving her tonight.
'What did she say to her poor mother? Because the woman became afraid that her daughter was no longer safe to sleep with me. And so what did she say to all of you that drove away the truth? It's a banal story of infidelity, even premarital.
'I am very disappointed, heartbroken. I blame myself for not having understood how a woman can't really love you if a marriage puts you against your own children, with who I have painstakingly tried to recover a relationship that has deteriorated in these three years.
'My dear Cristina, go to Mykonos with your lawyer, be happy with him, you know it's all paid for, like how he paid for the trip to Vietnam with your daughter, a splendid young lady who I am very disappointed to have been involved in this situation.
'I confirm, if you want, when you return we could evaluate how to continue a professional collaboration, however our story ends today.
'I wish you happiness with your new partner and to continue shining in the world that you have done all these years. Sorry to you all and good night.

oooh 4& 22 for the end year asks! 🥰
4. Movie of the year?
Not me forgetting every single movie I watched this year. Mm I'm not a big movie person so I actually don't know if I watched any movie that came out in 2023, but when it comes to really good movies I've seen this year... Earlier this year I watched the Boy and the Beast by Mamoru Hosoda and that really fucking hit me. Just scratching some specific ID itch about feelings of belonging and shit
22. Favorite place you visited this year?
This summer I briefly went to the Alps right north of Como Lake here in Italy and it was so pretty. So beautiful. Mountains are so amazing I love it there I could stay there forever if only I could walk uphill without running out of breath

While filming Long Way Down, in 2007, Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman and their whole team had to quickly pass through Italy for them to reach their main goal : Africa.
Their trip through Italy shouldn't take more than a day, or two - I don't remember - because they had deadlines and a specific path to follow. However, as you see there, Ewan wanted more than anything to pass by the lake como.
Unfortunately for him, in the end, Ewan had to submit to rationality and they couldn't go through the famous lake.
What intrigues me though here is that even though we're more than 5 years after the filming of Attack of the Clones, Ewan's eyes still shine thinking of Lake Como, a place he wants to see at all costs even if they don't go that way and don't have the time.
But, if someone dear to his heart has told him a lot about it... Then everything makes sense😉

36. Their favourite season
Autumn. For a number of reasons. Her daughter was born in the autumn. Halloween (her favourite celebration) is in the autumn. Usually all of the balls they have begin to turn dark as the nights come in earlier. The nights have a lovely chill to them and she loves lighting a fire in the hearth and sipping firewhiskey to enjoy it. It reminds her of her Hogwarts years. Paris is most beautiful then. She loves to hunt then — muggle hunting especially.
Her magic feels most natural in the summer however, so summer is her next favourite. It brings around the solstice, which she always celebrates. The sun stays out longer and the moon comes down lower. The stars feel closer to her. The rituals are beautiful and endless and connect her deeply to her family. The ancestral home is in a gorgeous warm part of France and she loves going there during the celebrations through the summer of the solstice. She can swim in the open lakes and dance late into evenings, wear her favourite fabrics.
38. Favourite holiday
Her favourite place to holiday would likely be Spain or France. Her favourite holiday from memory is Italy — Como, to be specific. The family know the wizarding royals of Italy and have a house out there. Muggles tend not to be able to afford it and they have no idea how exclusively magical it really is. It’s a huge wizarding community, one she and her family went back to many times.
39. Favourite game
Pin the tail on the muggle.
40. Favourite book
The art of war by Sun Tzu.
A song of ice and fire (George R. R. Martin is a half-blood).
The Cosmic Trilogy by C. S. Lewis.
Where Stars and Moons collide by Cassiopeia Black.
Bellatrix actually loves fictional books be it fantasy or classic magical literature. She also reads a lot on historical magic. She'd read as a young witch a lot for enjoyment and later when her remits of magic started to open in paths and magical ability.

RANDO CANONS. 1. In her late thirties, Cee has gotten into gardening, quite specifically growing vegetables. She's not great at it and leaves the country for long periods of time so isn't the BEST cucumber mom but does find it pretty relaxing.
2. Her favourite movie genre is horror, specifically sci-fi thriller or psychological horror. She had probably watched Alien a thousand times at this point. Despite being pretty bad with blood, the more suddenly short-lived gruesome the better. This bizarrely is especially true when she's pregnant; she found watching Aliens pop out of people weirdly comforting.
3. Celia's favourite food is sushi, quickly followed by anything Italian. While she used to spend the majority of her free time in Paris, as she's gotten older she spends a lot more time in Italy, specifically Lake Como.

actually i think it's so funny that lukas matsson pisses into the urinal specifically. like he's being logan (pissing) but also dominating logan (pissing on the waystar app) but then, if he were truly capable of being/dominating logan, he wouldn't piss in a urinal he would just do it on the floor and make someone else clean it up. and then roman shakes his hand (the hand that was just on his cock, the hand that roman refuses to take at lake como when matsson is offering it to help roman step off the boat) and so we get this very elegant setup of the power struggle between logan and matsson, with roman as an emissary and also a prize to be won but never truly a player in the game, not on the same level as his father or matsson. waystar gojo piss politics.
