Buying A Fly Fishing Rod And Reel_ All You Need To Know Before Taking The Plunge
Obviously, one of the interesting things is fly fishing rod and reel.
Buying A Fly Fishing Rod And Reel: All You Need To Know Before Taking The Plunge
Fly fishing is an exciting, rewarding sport. But before you can get out on the water, you’ll need to equip yourself with the right gear.
The two most important pieces of equipment for fly fishing are your fly fishing rod and reel. Choosing the right one for you can be daunting, especially for beginners.
This guide will take you through all the information you need to know to find the right rod and reel that suits your needs.
Types Of Fly Fishing Rods
The main types of fly fishing rods are:
Conventional Fly Rods are the most common type of fly rods and are perfect for general purpose fly fishing. They come in many different lengths and weights.
Switch Rods are a combination of a single-handed and double-handed fly rod. This type of rod is ideal for anglers who want the flexibility of both types of rods.
Spey Rods are designed for two-handed casting and are popular for salmon and steelhead fishing.
Types Of Reels
The main types of fly fishing reels are:
Single Action Reels are designed for lightweight lines and are the most basic type of reel. They are easy to use and are great for beginners.
Multi-Action Reels are the most popular type of reel. They are designed for heavier lines and provide more control when casting.
Automatic Reels are designed for saltwater fishing. They are heavier than other reels and can be used in tougher conditions.
Choosing The Right Line
Your line is just as important as your rod and reel. It’s important to choose the right line for the type of fish you’re trying to catch. Lines come in different weights and lengths, and some are better suited for certain types of fish.
For example, if you’re fishing for trout, a lighter line is better because it’s easier to cast. For larger fish, a heavier line is better because it is more likely to hold up against the stronger fish.
Choosing The Right Rod And Reel
Now that you know the different types of rods and reels, it’s time to choose the right one for you. The most important factors to consider are:
Your Skill Level – Beginners should look for

WFS 370 - Skeena River Spey Lodge with Brian Niska - Steelhead, Salmon, Skagit
Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/370
Presented By: Togens Fly Shop, Country Financial, Zoe Angling Group, FishHound Expeditions
Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors
Brian Niska takes us to the Skeena River and basin with a focus on swinging flies for main-stem steelhead. We find out how he targets migrating versus holder fish, when you should be fishing the shallow water, and how to get your swing to slow down.
This one is jam-packed with tips and takes on exact time, location, position.. it's all here! Brian is very articulate in elaborating techniques that you can already imagine how it works. Check it out right now!
Skeena River Show Notes with Brian Niska
12:00 - Brian and Jeff Pieroway designed some Spey rods called Metal Detector
13:00 - Brian tells the story of how they bought a guiding lodge business at Skeena riverside which was previously owned by a German family
20:00 - Fishing season starts in mid-March at Skeena
26:00 - He explains how slowing down the cast is the key to effective Spey casting
32:00 - Tip: If you're using running mono line, you don't have access to both sides of the river, and you're often fishing on the same side of your body, you need to find a way to incorporate some rotation to the other direction to keep your line going nice and straight.
32:55 - Tip: The older the mono line is, the better it fishes because it's got a stretch. Don't wait, put that stretch in as soon as you get it. A good way to get it stretched is to get it warm. Put it in a bowl of warm water and give it a good hard stretch.
36:00 - The busiest time of the year at Skeena Lodge is the end of August since most of the salmon species are available in August
38:10 - When people say they are going to fish the Skeena, what they really mean is that they're going to fish the Bulkley
39:45 - He talks about a picture of a 40-pound dead steelhead back in the 80s
48:45 - Brian mentioned the episode with Jeff Liskay and pointed out the tip about the importance of having a high rod tip. WFS 362 was the latest one with Jeff.
55:50 - "The anglers that are consistently successful are the ones that believe that every single bump is a fish and are willing to repeat the cast, and willing to let the fly fish its way out, they're not rushing to the next cast."
57:20 - They fish Skagit line most of the time and a little bit Scandi in the Winter
58:45 - Brian was on the River Rambler podcast
1:04:10 - The number one most common life history of a Skeena steelhead is 4 years in fresh water and 2 years in salt
1:04:30 - The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is a long-term ocean fluctuation of the Pacific Ocean. The PDO waxes and wanes approximately every 20 to 30 years.
1:13:00 - Early September to October is a great time to fish the Skeena
1:17:00 - Malcolm Wood is a big advocate of climate change - he makes movies about climate change awareness. His latest movie is called, The Last Glaciers
1:18:50 - Brian mentioned Bob Hooton from SteelheadVoices.com
1:25:50 - Advice: When you're fishing the Skeena for the first time is plan to be mobile. Plan to fish 3 or 4 different rivers and come for as longest period that your schedule allows. And don't fish with people in the same spot - spread the pressure out, that's the best move.
1:27:25 - For flies, Brian uses Stewart's Steel Pig. He recommends bringing a small and large version of the fly you're using.
1:30:20 - Brian recommends Bob Hooton's book about the Skeena

Easy Money
When it looks good on paper, on the water and on the popper!
Probably the best morning session so far this season. I fished for 45 minutes had 4 blowups and landed two. I made three single Spey casts and had my first fish on.
The second fish I stuck hit the fly and pulled it underwater. At this point I’m usually either going to feel the line go tight or feel nothing. I feel nothing and see the fly float back to the surface. Immediately I put the fly back in gear and then got the most vicious blowup ever. This fish made a crater with about a 4’ radius of spray. These fish from my experience rarely come back and eat the fly like that.
The Vina then proceeded to try and spend more time in the air than in the water. I was purposely keeping the tip of the rod pinned low and this Chromer would literally poke his head out of the water and do Tarpon head shakes. I was suspicious I may have foul hooked it in the eye because it was spazzing out so much. Honestly it wasn’t even really that big of a fish but fought harder then any fish I’ve caught so far. This fish tail walked at one point. What a eat and what a battle.
I usually set a alarm to let me know when it’s time to get off the water. That alarm came way to soon this morning. I’m positive I could have stuck a few more fish because I still had a lot more slide in the tide when I had to bug out of there.
Tumblr media
I believe I now have the best version of a topwater fly for these fish. I started off with Crease flies that work but are not a joy to cast on a Spey rod. I switched to a Muddler style fly that cast great but were not the best floaters. These Corvina Bombers are the best of both worlds. They cast great and they float even better. The fish are not shy about attacking them.

It was hit and run fun this morning!
