Rewatched CAtU this weekend. SSBD was probably conceptually the most threatening villain to appear in the series and an interesting foil to Candace. I just wish she actually got to be the main threat at the climax of the movie rather than immediately giving up and having her mind-control plant inexplicably become sentient instead.

- After my shift from work, I went straight to the airport for my placement. Today, I asked Leigh if she could show me how the process is in the counter and with the computer. She was very patient and accommodating. She even asked me to try to tell the passenger where the gate is, when the boarding time is and have a safe flighttttt

- Queue agent again. Stayed in front this time 🩷

February 9, 2024

- First time using the other side of our usual counters, with the SSBD tunnel. Got so confused with the queue but we managed it.

- This time Peter helped us and taught us on how to use the computer and help us with Cathay’s system. I have helped a lot of Filipinos which made me miss the Philippines even more. I helped this elderly Filipino lady, made my heart soft when she came to me for help, reminded me of my grandmother, her son went back to Halifax that’s why she was all alone. She didn’t have her etravel so I asked her if she knows all her details in the Philippines she said no, only his son knows. She didn’t have data so I connected her phone to the airport’s wifi and then she gets to call her son and I instructed him of what was needed. While they were figuring the etravel out, I heleped other passengers with the kiosk. There will really be times that we have to go the extra mile for some people, and today I chose to go overboard in my simplest ways.

My first week of Cathay Pacific internship >3

After orientation, I started my first shift right away on Sunday of that week. Before I bring my story up let me talk about the interview that I had!

Interview

It was a group interview and I remember over ~40 candidates were divided into two groups so I did a group interview with roughly 20 candidates! We were told to do a short self-instruction and the latest movie that I watched for ice-breaking :) After that, we learned about Cathay Pacific itself such as uniforms, cities that Cathay Pacific flies to, and duties as a customer service ambassador.

We then got possible challenging situations/scenarios and discussed what can we do in that situation as customer service ambassadors. I was a bit nervous but one thing good about it was that it was a group interview so we were able to make our opinions solid by supporting each other and adding ideas!

Positions

When it comes to the positions, we have 4 positions which are Queue/Kiosk/SSBD/Kiosk Queue. Usually, the ones that are in the queue area, are responsible for line segmentation so that passengers can find their line based on the class and countries that they are flying to. SSBD is the staff who helps the passengers force their baggage on the belt. Lastly, the Kiosk staff is responsible for letting the passengers the right procedures to print their boarding passes and checked baggage tags.

Overall

During my first week, I got to learn all positions by switching our positions (but not perfectly hehe) and see how the actual flow is going. Helping passengers for their smooth and safe flights before they are onboard is so exciting and grateful!

Cathay Pacific Internship - 12th Official Shift

[02/20/23]

I am working at the SSBD for this shift, so I turned on the main belt and called GTAA to open the bag drop at Zone 5 as usual to get ready. Together with the Bingo Sheet for the mini tags, I also prepared the batteries and dangerous goods signs.

At SSBD, Kelvin and Mia helped me assist passengers, and I'm grateful that they were there to support me and answer my questions. I was successful in persuading people to check ten carry-on bags for tonight's trip!

In addition, I believe that this was my best shift to date! Finally, tonight was the night that I had the opportunity to enter the aircraft. I'm grateful to Claire for taking us there and showing us around the plane, letting us enjoy and take pictures inside! It was such a surreal experience to see everything inside, including the cockpit, business class, premium economy class, galleys, and the place where the cabin crew could rest and sleep.

I also had the opportunity to witness the pushback tonight, and it is simply incredible! Getting a close-up look at the A350-1000 just gave me butterflies and made me realize how much I love aviation!

Overall, it was a night filled with new learnings and new experiences! We had the opportunity to learn from Claire about what to do and prepare for passengers on inbound flights. I just want to express my gratitude to all of our Cathay staff for a truly outstanding shift tonight! 🫶🏼

Orientation Day

January 10, 2023 After a few weeks of excitement on being accepted for the CSA position at Cathay, it was then time for our orientation. Walking around the airport was nerve wracking and a new atmosphere for me. I wasn’t really familiar being in the airport since I would only go there whenever we are picking/dropping off our friends or relatives. So I was a little scared knowing that I would be working there soon enough. 

I arrived early at the meeting place and waited for everyone else to show up. When Ms Claire and Hannah showed up, we all gathered at the Cathay’s office where we talked about schedules, RAIC, grooming, standard company policies and expectations. They gave us further details and information about what we will be doing as a CSA. We watched videos about how the kiosks and SSBD worked in real time. And I had the chance on putting the tag on a luggage for the first time which was exciting. But of course, the most exciting part was the uniform fitting. We got to try and take home the uniform (the best part) and was given our name tags, lanyard, and a mice staff toy (which is now displayed in my bedroom). We also got to meet Frances (the other DAOM). Overall, a pretty exciting day for us and the orientation took about almost 5hours.

i don’t think love at first sight is real. there is attraction at first sight or lust at first sight but not love. h o w e v e r i think what most ppl mistake as love at first sight is actually potential at first sight. yk when you meet a person and you start talking and the more you learn about them you start to tell yourself “i can see myself having a future with them. i can learn to love them. i can choose to love them” and i think that’s so much more powerful than love at first sight because it’s an active choice. you’re making a conscious decision and effort to learn about someone, flaws and all and maybe stay with them forever. you’re deciding that this person is it for you and you’re going to open your heart and hopefully they’ll open there’s to you as well. i think that’s 1000% better than love at first sight.

SSBD TODAY!

Today's my role was SSBD! Just another normal day, too! I was checking the baggage weight, check boarding pass and luggage tag! Also, the most important passport! In Cathay, we suggest that if passengers have carry-on luggage heavier than 7kg, we recommend checking in for free! However, I made a mistake today. One of the passengers had 15kg of carry-on baggage, so I suggested he send it for free! It was my word habit. It is okay to send 7kg to 10kg for free, but over 10kg is not carry-on and has to be checked in. Furthermore, it is another check-in luggage, so the passenger must pay another cost. I felt so sorry for him, so I apologized and explained well. Through this experience, I also gained my ability and passenger knowledge of the policies. So, I was so thankful for this experience.

🖇️ Week 11

Easter day! 🐰🥚

We had so much fun handing out some candy to passengers, especially to all the kids! 🥰

Now that I know the regular operation, with kiosk and ssbd, it gets so much easier coming to work and doing all the tasks. I have learned so much things during this placement, watching all cathay crew helping customers and dealing with difficulties is something very important that I learned from here for the last 3 months.

I am very grateful for all the learning process, the opportunities, the good and bad days, all the friends I made and all the experiences I gain from this placement. It’s truly something that I will never be able to trade with anything.

It’s only a couple weeks left until I am done with my placement, and it’s safe to say that I was very happy and blessed to be apart of Cathay Pacific team even only for a couple of months ◡̈ Thank you to all Cathay Pacific crew who welcome me with open arms and allow me to learn and grow, to Ms. Ava who always there to help and motivate me, and of course to all of my colleagues that made this experience so much more memorable! I’m very grateful for everyone ◡̈

It was not really busy day so we had really good time! And also me and Bea found a bunny on the floor so we put on the kiosk☺️

Usually, nighttime flights are always full, but even today's daytime flight was packed! I was working at my favorite SSBD, and scanning was a mess, so we couldn't run the checked baggage through the machine. We had to gather them separately and add new tags, which was quite a hassle. Up and down with the scale, I was practically doing a workout! I sweated so much; I had to take off my jacket for the first time while working! 😂 Later that day, despite feeling exhausted, I had a second meeting with Professor Ava and Hana. It was tough on the body, but it was a fulfilling day overall!
