He's a clown, he's a sweetheart, a Privileged Rich Boy, he and Jeng are Siblings™, he's an amateur director and actor, he's literally so pretty what the hell (God has favorites), he's your regular nervous and awkward teenage girl, a sleepygirl, he is emotionally expressive, does facials with his mom, he's broody, a long term piner, Just A Little Guy, he's goin through it, was kiss deprived so when he got kissed he went for it, looks out for his brother, needs to get it together, cannot hold his liquor, and once again, is Too Pretty To Be Dealing With This Shit

I've finally figured out why Pat and Put's relationship made me so queasy in Step by Step episode 7.

When it comes to Jeng and Pat, they had their first interaction right in front of us, the audience. Their entire relationship so far is open for our perusal, and we are given all the information we need to form our opinions.

Compare that to Put and Pat's relationship. We are introduced to Put in a very tense scene in episode 2, where Pat is clearly unhappy about him being back in his life.

But we don't know why. We, the audience, are still very deliberately kept in the dark about their previously failed relationship. We have no idea why it didn't work out the first time around. We are just made aware of the fact that there is a heavy, ugly history between them, and nothing else. Even the details that are eventually revealed are so vague, they only increase our frustration.

(By whyyyy? Tell us whyyy, damn it!)

So when Pat and Put got together, we could not see their relationship as clearly as we could see Jeng and Pat's. We are hyperaware of the history hanging over them.

When we see Pat's face fall in this scene, we realise that Pat is sad not only because of Put's current indifference, he is also remembering the sadness and disappointment from his past. These layers of fog between the audience and the characters keep piling up every time we see Pat and Put interact with each other because, every time, we are uncomfortably aware of the things left unsaid.

The end result is that whenever Pat feels confused, we do too.

The best part? The audience and Pat are both unsure of his relationship with Put, but for opposite reasons. We feel uncomfortable because we know too little. Pat feels uncomfortable because he knows too much, and he can't help but let his past seep into his present and cloud it.

To add another layer, the narrative constantly interweaves Jeng and Pat's interactions with Put and Pat's. Take the dinner scene from episode 6. Put was, as usual, being pushy and was constantly bringing up the past (albeit vaguely) and apologizing for it while fully ignoring Pat's reluctance around the subject.

After the MLM creep shows up, gets an earful from Pat, and leaves, Pat and Put go back to their table. And the scene cuts to Jeng and Pat having a conversation in the car, sharing ideas, and being mutually comfortable with each other.

And then the scene cuts again to show Pat and Put walking home, where Put again brings up his past, and this time he uses a literal prop (a stuffed sharkie) to cut the tension between them and finally succeeds in convincing Pat into giving him a second chance.

The show uses every trick up its sleeve to swing the audience's emotions like a pendulum, between Jeng's honesty and Put's manipulation, between Pat's reluctance and our confusion. That is why we felt the uneasiness in our guts before our brains could catch up.

Give the writing team their flowers, they fucking earned it.

10 BL Boys I Want Carnally

Thanks to @nieves-de-sugui for inspiring a mini freak out because I couldn’t figure out if I wanted to be on them or on each other.

In no particular order

1. HaoTing- sweet golden retriever

My OG himbo. Took my man a minute but when he went in he 110% committed. Put his whole self into loving XiGu. I don’t think anyone but Wayne Song could have made me like him but man did he make it work

2. Porsche-beloved chaos gremlin

I know the series ended being hit or miss for people but like it or not you have to agree Apo is freaking PRETTY. Ok this is less about the character and more about the actor but who cares. Whenever I see a picture of Apo there is a 85% chance my first thought is going to be “holy shit he’s pretty”

3. Jeng-DADDY

No I won’t elaborate or apologize. You know exactly what I’m talking about

4. Gumpa- competence kink for the win

He was the only one with the brain cell and I love him ok? Gumpa gave no shits White randomly showed up pretending to be Black, he just adopted him and taught him how to survive

5. Mhok- bestest green flag bad boy

This one was a total surprise for me. No hate to Jimmy he just doesn’t usually do anything for me. But I love me a damaged bad boy with a heart of gold

6. Mizuki- it’s the dom energy ok?

Boy was somehow the king of communication and miscommunication but he also nailed the domination and I have a kink ok. Though he is also a good example of me wanting him but also wanting him to want Yoh more haha

7. Yai and Sand-the cutest couple to ever couple

I know it’s kind of cheating but I refuse to split them up. Look they shouldn’t have introduced Sand the way they did unless they wanted me to fall in love with her and Yai is the king of whipped a he gets included

8. Yuna-the queen

I don’t care what the list is I will find a way to put her on it ok

9. AiDi- my little feral murder kitten

The love I have for AiDi is unlimited and if any show could get a season two I’d want it to be about him

10. Jeff Satur- king of gender envy

Ok another kind of cheat but this is less about a character and more about the actor. Jeff was the first time I felt true gender envy and he just won’t stop

I showed this parallel to @dribs-and-drabbles but I can't stop thinking about it now

Pat has yet again found himself in a relationship that doesn't feel Quite Right. That doesn't match up to what he wants, has him feeling wrong. Both moments that have him running away.

Like Put pointed out to Jeng, neither of them can be very open with their relationships. Yet neither is very subtle about their affections in the workplace, leaving Pat to worry about that. They're both older and more established in their careers in a way that gets in the way of their relationship - but with the stress of an imploding career falling on Pat. They both want to avoid the actual problems and skip over to the good parts.

Put and Jeng can fight over Pat all they want, Put can come in and berate Jeng but ultimately both of them have put him in the exact same position.

You know what I love most about the dynamic going on in between Pat and Jeng?

See Jeng is rich, handsome and a established business man. He is very particular about his impression in general and in public, where as Pat has just started his career. He is inexperienced and new to everything atleast in the business or work. They have a solid 10yrs gap in them.

We know that it was mostly crush on first sight for both of them. They both have maintained the professionalism to an extent while they work together. But as they spend more time together that guard is slipping, but still you see that despite being younger, inexperienced and clearly overwhelmed by everything that is Jeng, Pat is so put together. He gets flustered but he hides it so well , whereas Jeng as the days pass is turning into a shy ball of a man. He has to look away from Pat. He can't keep looking or he will melt then and there. He just can't control his face , eyes nor his heart from showing that affection for Pat.

Look at the difference between how both of them get flustered.

And this kind of role reversal or anti stereotypical thing going on between them is so precious. I just can't wait to see their dynamic when they get together.

I don't think we have got this dynamic ever in any BL. This is not exactly tsundere - sunshine kinda thing either. I don't know what to call it. But whatever it is glad I am here to witness it.

WAIT!!! I’m sure I’ve missed this. But is Jeng actively hiding he is gay ? like was that the issue with his Ex?

Oh no, would he make Pat hide them like Put did?

Anon, I didn't think he was actively hiding that he is gay, but the conversation he had with Put (and his dad earlier in the series) makes it seems like Jeng can't be out in every part of his life due to his career.

"But I'm so tired of having to wear a mask for the sake of society" [episode 4]

Let's work backwards:

The entire interaction with his ex was awkward as it should be, but Jeng looked for Allon's friends, then for Pat. They both stated they were surprised to see the other. Is this the ex from two years ago? [episode 8]

Because he looked at Pat greet Jeng in a knowing way, like he had been Pat. [episode 8]

Put stated that someone who is as famous as Jeng ISN'T ABLE to be out. This implies that Jeng must be closeted due to the level of his family's fame. [episode 8]

And Put and Jeng know each other from other business projects, so he is familiar with Jeng's celebrity status. [episode 2]

Tae telling Jeng to stop being afraid of what people will think. [episode 8]

Jaab was very upset that Jeng might have taken Pat out to eat. Some people thought it was because of what is happening to Jaab and Jen, and Jaab mentioned "it wasn't professional" but what if it's deeper than that since professional = family business? [episode 7]

When Pat looked up Jeng, all the articles were about how he is the rich, handsome, successful, and available heir to a massive conglomerate. [episode 4]

Which is something Put threw in Jeng's face when they were at the aquarium. Put told Jeng he was rich, handsome, talented, and born at the finish line, and it was reinforced at the dinner later on. [episode 5]

Pat found it suspicious that Jeng, the head of a digital marketing department, did not have social media. [episode 4]

And that wild coworker, stated that Jeng is mysterious when Chot said Jeng wasn't known for being a player.

Does Jeng have to stay closeted?

This is how the dad looked at Pat when he emerged in Jeng's clothes after spending the night. The mom is looking at the dad because she knows he is displeased. [episode 3]

This is what Jeng said about his uncle. [episode 4]

And remember this layered conversation Jeng had with his dad? The dad told Jeng he was needed to rebrand the company, but he was irritated about "things beyond his control." Jeng asked him what he was getting at, and he ended the conversation stating he was "still [Jeng's] dad" but it wasn't affectionate. [episode 5]

Jeng made several faces during that infamous meeting about BL actors, but the only statement he made was to draw up the contracts. [episode 5]

We are watching a BL, so everyone is gay until proven otherwise, but that was where we messed up. This show is still based in reality, and that meeting about BL actors showed us that. We messed up assuming Jeng was out-ish, but what if he isn't?

We have no idea what was the actual issue with his ex or if this ex was even a factor two years ago. We have no idea why Put and Pat broke up two years ago, and Pat fled to America where his dad is a chef.

But Pat's dad is visiting next week, and I'm praying we get some answers because Pat being shook that Jeng is gay has us all shook, and now I'm rethinking Jeng's character.

Put is not even gonna let Pat say his piece? 2 minutes in and I'm already burning mad

"I know, you've been really good to me" Oh Pat, you pathalogical people pleaser

I continue being impressed by this show showcasing how adults do and should handle relationships and everything that comes with it. This must be one of the most realistic breakup scenes in BLs. And it is done without compromising the emotions of the characters. Hats off, really

Jane is wearing two layers of pink. Our resident Tumblr color demon @respectthepetty has taught us that pink = love, so good to know that his feelings has remained unchanged or even intensified from last when we saw him

My god, Khun Jeng looks so fineeeeeeeee

And he's wearing a dark blue shirt underneath his neutral brown jacket. While Pat is in a dark blue cardigan. Interesting

Ohhhhhhh wow Jane is pissed and Jaab is too. The cat fight between these two is gonna be hilarious

Put, you insufferable snake, ya dumped. Stop misrepresenting facts

Jeng, how the fuck did you know? Are you really THAT perceptive?

Oh man, that is the worst takeaway you can ever have from a failed relationship

Well, Ae looks like a goddess, as usual. What else is new?

I love this scene and the commentary that comes with it. Keep your noses out of pregnant people's business, for fuck's sake! How hard is it to have some basic decency?

I love that Tae is calling out how quickly Jeng's mood changes from brooding to giddy and vice versa in this conversation.

We have a new stuffie. The shark is out and the tiger is in. YES I SEE IT AND I LOVE IT

Oh I'm sooo ready for this non-date date. I want the sweet, sweet fluff to drown me. Gimme all the blushing, all the eye contact, all the accidental brushing of fingers, GIVE IT TO ME

OH MY GOD, he planned the whole thing. He had people move chairs out of the way for aesthetics. This complete bitch (affectionate)

GUYS, THE FLIRTING, I know I said I can handle it, but this is too adorable ^^

Jeng just hung up on his brother in a flash, not even waiting for him to respond? Oh that's cold

Oh shit, Pat is drunk, again, Here come the truth bombs

Damn, Man Trisanu is nailing this. He is acting his ass off to show how restless Jeng feels before every almost-confession

This slowburn is gonna kill us all, honestly

Oh we are dancing, oh it's so gloriously awkward, oh make it stop

Jaab, my beloved, I've missed your melodrama. You look like a divorced sugar baby who won half the riches in the settlement, I love it

Jeng tells Pat he can be just a safe space for him, while Pat is sobbing on his shoulder about his ex. All while Jeng has been trying the whole day to confess his own feelings for Pat. Every atom of this man is a green flag, I swear

These drunk disaster gays, I love them so much

Pat, sweetie, no. Please, you must be joking. Don't tell me you didn't know, DON'T TELL ME YOU ARE THAT OBLIVIOUS!

Okay, now Pat has to rethink each and every one of their interactions to see if he has ever misled Jeng, or if Jeng has ever crossed his boundaries. And then recalibrate his feelings with this new information. Yeah, this could take a while.

I'm leaning more and more towards the possibility of a second season, or even a special episode, after the show ends. Because there is no way they can fit all the domesticity these characters deserve within the next couple of episodes.

Ahhhh I can't believe the slowburn is still not over. I love it and I hate it and I'm pretty sure this show has turned me into a sadomasochist.
