The Imperial Coroner (2021) Overall Thoughts

This is one of the dramas that I wish I liked more as it is totally an underdog that deserved to succeed and totally did in its own way as it became way more popular than its broadcaster Tencent anticipated and expected.

It is notable from the get-go that this drama puts it storytelling at the forefront as it crafts an admirable mystery that’s anchored by smart characters that are never dumbed down for the sake of plot progression. And unfortunately, that is something that is worth applauding in drama land because way too many times characters who are billed as smart/start off as smart will often do some dumb things because the writer needs them to for sake of plot for the sake of the plot.

But I that the drama’s tight writing and smart characters also sort of do this drama kind of a disservice in that I was never truly engaged with the plot because any problems these characters would encounter would be all solved nearly right away so I never felt excited or worried about the plot or characters as these problems were never given a chance to fully marinate or grow in terms of stakes.

However, this drama biggest flaw is also not really, it’s fault as mentioned previously no one expected this drama to be a hit so it wasn’t given many resources and it’s pretty low-budget and the thing is that is noticeable from every shot in the drama. You can tell from everything that the drama doesn’t have much money from its subpar costumes and sets to the way this drama is lit to how the fight scenes are shot.

Acting-wise everyone’s acting is pretty much on the same level no one’s bad but no one is delivering an outstanding performance either. And normally this wouldn’t bother me but the female lead constantly describes the male lead as handsome and describes his bone structure as outstanding when the actor playing the male lead isn’t all that traditionally good-looking like he isn’t bad looking neither but he just looks like a pretty average dude that you could believably find on the street in China. So, kind and kills the believability factor when he is constantly praised by the female lead as exceptionally good-looking.

In terms of villains, I’m not sure how I feel as they are pretty smart but they are also quite cartoonish in a sense as one of them is literally one of those stereotypical moustache twirling types.

And as for romance there isn’t a lot of it in this drama which I’m not that mad about since I don’t think the actors playing the male and female leads have that much romantic chemistry. Their characters are both very career focused people which I can appreciate on one sense but that being said I am pretty annoyed at where this drama up ended in terms of their relationship.

This is going to spoil the end of the drama so spoiler warnings:

The male lead and female lead got married without even going on a single date or having a proper kiss scene. If they’re both going to be career focused people, I rather have the drama in end with them solving another case together and having someone introduce the female lead as the male lead’s wife instead of the drama end with their wedding the drama itself never placed any importance on romance.

TL; DR: Not visually pleasing with no stand out acting performances either this drama’s greatest strength lies in its script which is fast-paced and tightly written with a likable main cast of characters. 7.5/10
