You and Simu haven’t been dating for very long, but he knew right away that you were the one and he wanted to spend the rest of his life with you. On your end, you felt the same way.

However, Simu wanted you to settle into your acting career before making any big moves. Once you landed the role of your dream, that was when he saw his chance to propose.

You had been anticipating that Simu was going to propose. He asked you to cancel any plans you had on a certain Friday night. Additionally, your friends randomly took you to get your hair and nails done the day before those scheduled plans. It was even weirder that your parents closed the boba shop earlier on that day.

So when Simu knelt down on one knee with your hand in his, your eyes welled up with the happiest tears you have ever shed in your life. You were tempted to cut him off before he could have the chance to ask you the big question, but you didn’t want to spoil the moment he most likely spent a long time preparing for.

“Will you do the honor of making me the happiest man and marry me?” Simu questioned, choking over his words.

“Yes! A million times yes!” Simu jumped to his feet, immediately sweeping you off the ground and spinning you in the air. All of your friends and family cheered and captured this sweet moment on their cameras and phones.

When Simu proposed, he didn’t have a ring yet because he wanted to take you shopping for one that would be perfect for you. After spending many hours at the jeweler, you finally settled on a ring that both of you loved. He's a gentleman like that lol

The wedding was fairytale themed, just like you had dreamed of since you were a child. The bridesmaids and groomsmen all wore pink with gold accents. Per Simu’s request, the groomsmen wore their dress shirts unbuttoned to expose the matching chains Simu gifted them.

Your honeymoon took place in Italy. You stayed in a luxurious suite and you can probably guess what went on in the suite. During the times you weren't messing around in the room, you and Simu explored the city, visiting all the gorgeous sites you had dreamt of seeing in person. His favorite part of the honeymoon was seeing your eyes light up while taking in the scenery.

You would have never in your wildest dreams thought you would marry the man you have looked up to. But you were happy to be spending your life with someone who is equally as in love with you

What about Midge?

Margot Robbie’s “Barbie” movie has become a cultural phenomenon. It’s projected to make between $75 million and a whopping $140 million on it first weekend.

But is it good? I don’t think any movie can live up to the hype that has been generated. I thought it was interesting and odd.

Warner Brothers has released so many clip from the movie that the first third involves connecting all the dots of Barbie’s bubble gum pink world.

The second third is your classic fish out of water story - Barbie’s rude awakening that women (and girls) are not empowered in the real world. But more importantly, it sets up the villain of the last third of the movie - Ken as the villain.

Until now Ken has been treated as an “also ran”. Barbie barely acknowledges him despite his professions of love. So when he sees men control the power structure of the real world - he brings that back to BarbieLand.

This section of the movie is very existential with Barbie trying to understand her place in the world. There’s lots of talking about empowerment.

What I thought was odd, was how easily and quickly the Barbies of BarbieLand turned over their power to the Kens. Is there an underlying message?

The movie is fun and bright (and has a terrific dance number by the Kens) and it’s also thought provoking. BUT little girls (and boys) who actually play with Barbie Dolls won’t have a clue about what’s going on. And their mother’s might be shocked when Barbie proclaims, “I don’t have a vagina.”

Margot Robbie is great, both as Stereotypical Barbie and as Dazed and Confused Barbie. Ryan Gosling is terrific as Ken and he really committed to the role. Can an actor win an Oscar for portraying a plastic doll?

I also enjoyed Simu Liu as Ken’s rival Ken#2. I think it will be a long time before we see the sequel to Marvel’s Shang-Chi so it was nice that he had screen time.

With all the talk about empowerment and discovering who you really are, I was surprised the movie shamed Teenage Pregnancy. Mattel created Midge in 1963. She was supposed to be Barbie’s best friend. They gave her a boyfriend too - Allan, played by Michael Cera. In 1988 Mattel released a pregnant Midge (with a small baby doll in her belly). It created a bit of a controversy and the line (and Midge) was discontinued.

In the film, Pregnant Midge appears a few times - but always in the periphery of the scene, and when someone notices her, they proclaim, “I thought we cancelled her!”

In the 21st Century I thought we had grown beyond shaming Pregnant Teenaged Girls.

By the way, it was fun seeing cameos by 1993’s Gay Ken (check out his necklace). And 2009’s Sugar Daddy Ken (He has a dog named Sugar, and he’s the dog’s “daddy”.)

NOTE: The entire subplot involving Will Ferrell was pointless and unnecessary.

Why Barbie is an important movie to me personally

So. I was a kid a long time ago. My strongest memory of that time is how creative storytelling play absolutely absorbed my childhood. It was the only thing I wanted to do involving other kids, honestly. Some kids would even marvel at how complicated my stories got. I'd play story time with any kind of toy, but Barbies were the reliable old standby.

I was one of the (apparently) few kids who played with their Kens. I had a Creepy Ken (aka F*ckboy Ken), who was a dark brunette with sinister eyes. I think he was either a Western Star Ken or a Dream Date Ken. I also had a Nice Guy Ken (blonde, tan, happy, and kinda bland. Very much a Malibu Ken). I played with Creepy Ken all the time because he was the hotter one. He was a sleazebag, a manipulator, and usually horny. Creepy Ken would screw Barbie over somehow, and then Nice Guy Ken would come to her rescue and comfort her.

My Barbies were often sex workers in a brothel (using the less offensive terms here), and I know that The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas was at least partly to blame for this, but I started exploring sexuality at an early age regardless of that being my favorite movie. But in any case, my Barbies were a troop of happy hookers and treated each other as family.

I had a Weird Barbie, who started as a winking Western Barbie and whose wonky eye made her into the perfect subject for science experiments. She lost most of her hair and at least one foot and always got put into the bizarre/humorous outfit. I eventually decided that she was Punk.

I also had a Peaches 'n Cream Barbie, who to this day I proclaim is the most beautiful Barbie of all time. This is the hill I will die on.

So I just saw Barbie, and ALL of my Barbies/Kens were up on that screen. Peaches 'n Cream Barbie appeared in the intro and I actually pointed at her like an excited 5 year-old. Weird Barbie made me appreciate my own version of her and regret how I mistreated her.

Simu Liu had perfect Creepy Ken kenergy. Ryan Gosling brought out a stunning three-dimensionality in bland, blond Ken that I wish I could have explored as a young storyteller. I loved Allan. I wish I'd had an Allan now.

And of course Margot Robbie absolutely pwned the role of Barbie Barbie. I remember my own Barbies being depressed and experiencing heartache (usually because of Creepy Ken and not so much an existential crisis, but still). I just felt such a dedication to Barbie and all she represents in Robbie's performance.

The only thing I wanted more from Barbie is what I've always wanted from Barbie, an acknowledgment of her queer fan base. Barbie's always been close to the heart of anyone who loves fashion, fabulosity, and pretty himbos. I don't know if you've been to the Barbie aisle lately, but Ken's definitely not getting any straighter.

I'm gonna hope that they push further past the queer boundary in the inevitable sequel. Hari Nef was very well-featured in her role, not to mention gorgeous. And Sugar Daddy Ken (who I had no idea was even a thing btw) and Magic Earring Ken are a fun joke as the "clearly not gay" couple, but let's get serious. Give me gay/nb Allan, bi Weird Barbie, and more of Ryan's Ken beaching Simu's Ken off.

Just rambling about the Barbie Movie. Spoilers ahead so be Advised

I gasped and laughed when Sugar Daddy Ken showed up, he never even got released but he made it in! That's most impressive.

I want Depressed Barbie, I'd love to have that doll and her friends. That was a great bit in the film.

The cutaway to Weird Barbie's origins is so unhinged and I LOVE IT.

Was kinda surprised when ken did a heel turn and took over barbieland. Also loved the Rivalry between him and Simu Liu Ken.

Also ALLAN WAS FUCKING GREAT OH MY GOD. WHY DOESN'T HE HAVE A DOLL OUT MATTEL WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!! GIVE THIS PLASTIC MAN THE LOVE AND RESPECT HE DESERVES!!!!

Also adored how the film ran with the idea that the barbies and kens are actual dolls and fully committed to the bit. That was a wise choice that worked wonderfully.

Ruth handler not only being a character but also being her actual ghost who still has an office at Mattel was great! And not shying away from her tax fraud or mastectomy, and keeping her true to the real person was also a nice touch.

I feel like the Mattel seen in the film and the people running it would do a better job with barbie as a toy and brand than the actual people in charge IRL.

Surprised Midge was in it for less than a minute despite getting a poster. I Hope we get more midges in a sequel.

I wish we saw more classic Barbie and Ken Fashions. There's a few, mostly for barbie, but not that many surprisingly.

You met Simu the day the Shang-Chi trailer was released, which also happened to be the same day as his birthday. You were having dinner with your friend when you both saw him, and you, being an extreme Marvel fan, freaked out. Your friend didn’t really know who he was, but they did encourage you to go talk to him. He was having dinner with his parents, but they both left to talk to the waiter in the back. Meanwhile, Simu pulled his phone out to keep himself busy.

After a quick breath check, you finally stood up to approach him. Simu must have sensed you walking towards him because he turned off his phone and set it down on the table. The moment he looked up at you, it was as if time stopped and the world around him ceased to exist. You were the only thing in his view and he basked in your beauty. On your end, you thought you could have swooned at any moment by how gorgeous he was up close.

“H-h-hi!” you squeaked nervously. Simu sensed you were nervous so he shifted in his seat so he could face you, but that only increased your nerves. “Umm…are…y-you-”

Simu smiled and chuckled lightly. “Yes, I am Simu Liu.”

You bit your lip in excitement. “Wow, umm, first off, congratulations on the Shang-Chi trailer. It looks so good! I can’t wait to buy tickets to see the movie. I really love Marvel and seeing that you are the first Asian superhero is SO cool!”

You never noticed due to your nervous rambling but Simu’s eyes twinkled the more you talked about Shang-Chi and Marvel. The next thing you say is what caught Simu’s attention. 

“Oh and another thing, if it weren’t for you, I probably wouldn’t be pursuing an acting career. I’m kinda in the same position that you were once in. You see, I have always loved acting and always wanted to become an actor. Of course, my parents disapproved of it so to please them, I went to college for business. And let me tell you, I HATED it! My parents finally saw how unhappy I was in college and they finally approved of me pursuing acting. So long story short, thank you for inspiring me to follow my dreams!” As you were catching your breath from your tangent, Simu smiled so big that his cheeks hurt.

“Wow, I’m speechless,” was all that he could conjure up.

“Yeah, I mean…Sure I’m drowning in student debt on top of paying for my acting classes, but hey, hopefully I can pay it off in the future.” Simu awkwardly laughed, causing you to kick your own shin. “Oh my gosh, I’m sorry. I probably should not have shared that information with you.”

“No need for apologies. I’ve been there, too.” His eyes sized you up, studying your features. “By the way, I never got your name.”

Words cannot even describe how embarrassed you are. You were so caught up in your scatterbrained thoughts that you forgot to mention your name. You finally told him your name and followed up with another apology. 

“Hey, no apologies necessary.” His bright grin helped ease your nerves as you shook hands. However, it was short lived when his parents returned to the table, followed by a waiter who placed a plate of mochi ice cream with a lit candle on top of the table.

“Oh, I- uhhh, happy birthday! Oh my- I hope I’m not interrupting-“

“No, not at all. Your company has been a pleasure so thank you!” Simu glanced over to his parents who were staring and smiling at you. He then glanced back at you. “Oh by the way, these are my parents.” You extended your hand out to them to shake, but instead they each brought you in for a hug. 

You didn’t see but Simu was smiling to himself watching his parents hug you as if they have known you forever. It was odd to him because he had never been this intrigued by anyone this quickly, let alone a fan. And to see his parents react so positively to another woman was something he wasn’t used to. The sound of your voice brought him back to reality.

“Hey, before I head back to my table, can I get a photo with you?”

Simu blinked before flashing another smile. “Yes, of course! Let’s do this!” You handed the phone to Simu’s father before crouching down to his level. This allowed him to snake his arm around your mid back. The feel of his large hand on you sent shivers up your spine while you awkwardly threw up a peace sign. After the photo was taken, you hugged Simu tightly before grabbing your phone from his dad. 

“Wow, oh my gosh!” You giggled with a squeal. “Thank you so much, Simu! You literally made my entire night!” You paused and shook your head. “Actually, you made my whole life!
