My first time in Taiwan -- before I moved there -- included a bit of exploring, which usually resulted in getting lost for a few hours in an effort to avoid crowds. One of my last excursions before heading to Korea was to Maokong, a destination in the mountains of Taipei full of tea fields and touristy shops. I followed trails in the heat to find Yinhe Temple, which is a cool little temple set in the mountainside with a little waterfall. The water and tree cover made this spot a bit cooler than the surrounding fields. There are a lot of great day trips from Taipei, and Wulai is one of the more relaxing ones to take. This town in southern New Taipei is known for its lush mountains and natural hot springs. It was home to the Ayatal indigenous group, but is now more of a tourist destination with resorts and spas adorned with indigenous designs.
