I'm only on episode 10 of finally finished The Devil Judge, but so far and I still think that whenever Kim Ga On and Kang Yo Han are at home they are literally in a governess romance novel. Or sometimes a gothic romance novel. But they're definitely in a romance novel.

(If you like m/f historical romance, Tessa Dare's The Governess Game is a pretty good one.)

ga-ram ( k ) headcanons ( one. )

he has an associate’s degree in the arts. while ga-ram himself was not terribly interested in continuing his education, he spent his two years earning this degree as yohan asked him to, phrasing it as a good back-up for ga-ram to have once this is over. ga-ram couldn’t imagine what that would look like.

this is also where ga-ram picked up english and bits and pieces of japanese.

before working full-time behind the scenes, ga-ram worked several service jobs, including  a server, a retail person, delivery person, a secretary, a driver, and a bodyguard. he was most comfortable as the last two, but being a secretary was the most fruitful for him as it taught him how to provide flawless service while acting as the contact of act as he found was necessary once yohan was appointed as head of the live court system.

Resents the rich. which is ironic because he technically grew up as rich as a child so perhaps the better phrasing is that ga-ram hates upper class society ( think of the uber powerful and elite ). Not only were these the people who destroyed his family, but he also sees how they typically treat people in the service industry like they’re expendable/nothing.

it used to be hatred, but i feel that that’s died down enough to point that ga-ram is just...bitter af

Would probably be the first to stand up for a coworker/customer service worker if a customer was being rude. this is probably why yohan has them working in the background scenes.

and on that note, he uses his height and strength to his advantage a lot too. would totally pick up a rude customer and physically deposit them outside of said business.

on the note of his family, i would say that his family was one of the nouveau rich- like his father and mother worked their way up the economic ladder and fully intended on providing for ga-ram in ways their own parents could not for them. ex. around the time his father passed on, they had begun  saving up money to put into ga-ram’s university education.

they have a temper- it’s just not obvious because over the years, they’ve gotten very good at biting their tongue back.  yohan helped with that one- encourage ga-ram to a. bottle it up and b. channel it for his cause.

Of course, that’s a very different story once ga-ram wakes up in his post-main verse….

likes aquariums, not just for sea creatures, but also for how the light shines through the water in these places. ga-ram finds aquariums to be safe-havens and requested to yohan that their hideout be in a secluded spot in an aquarium.

in his post-main verse he picks a lot of fights, which he knows isn’t good for him or his head, but not having a purpose leaves him aimless, without a means of channeling his anger now or anyone to rely on now.

has a black belt in judo and combines that with street fighting experience he’s accumulated over the years

Ironically, ga-ram writes with his right hand. all other activities, he prefers to use his left hand.

okay now that ive finished the devil judge and thus have seen all of The Big Three, i can say that my prefrence is:

#i really liked it!!! mostly! but i feel like it has some glaring issues and also that one post i reblogged #that compared its message with be's i agree with it so much and while to me it isnt something #that makes tdj worse for me i just prefer how be did it! #also in tdj it really was carried by the amazing characters of yohan gaon and elijah #and all of the possible dynamics within that trio #whereas in be i cared abt the non lead characters a lot and all of the dynamics they had #with dongsik and/or juwon so #those are basically my thoughts. im too tired to go further through the tag rn hskfdjdkd time to go to bed

Everytime I meet my friends, they will be surprised that the TDJ fandom has lasted so long. And to think it is able to do so with just one season, 16 episodes, and nothing more after that.

They will ask me why? And I thought that I will pass the question on to the rest of you.

Why?

We are still here even though the drama finished airing after 2021. And I still see fics being written on AO3 as well.

god WHY is the tdj's dialogue and set up so juicy and incredible???

couple of things to talk through here:

the first scene is the professor scolding gaon for thinking that the trial worked out well. gaon then takes it back and says it's 'not a child's game.' so here we have gaon expressing his honest thoughts and being berated about why it's wrong to think someone got justice in the way they did (nevermind that something was a lil fishy but that ain't the point rn lmao).

then, we have yohan who juxtaposes the professor's beliefs in the following scene. and while gaon probably never believed the trial was a game, it's very interesting wordplay.

yohan's dialogue is so important because even after he says 'it's not a fair game to start with,' he also says that it's full of manipulation and lies......

Which is exactly what the professor did during the basketball game in the scene prior with gaon. he cheats gaon by acting hurt to steal the ball and make a dunk but calls it a fakeout rather than admitting what he's done.

i find it so fascinating how they already insert in the differences between yohan and the professor, the start of the friction as to what will ultimately have gaon questioning everything.

but what i'm most intrigued by is how quickly the professor put gaon's thoughts down and gaon immediately backtracking. such good characterization right there and the insane amount of growth he has by ep 16 where he tells a room full of people his own thoughts and beliefs.

have a smattering thoughts around the gothic characteristics of the mansion in TDJ. what if we took it a step further with a fic where the mansion is sentient?

it comes alive bc the anguish of the soul in the basement is so powerful. it survives with the goal of protecting yohan. (with possible implications for kang jisang's death?). but because it's a house and not a person (capable of thought and therefore change), it doesn't do exactly what its inhabitants want.

yohan and elijah know that the house is alive. so they stare at each other in surprise when AI Butler calls gaon 'juin-nim' at breakfast. this is the same house which threw jung sunah out the window when she was a child

other thoughts:

+ the house as a third character during the major TDJ scenes: in the study when yohan is arrested; stopping gaon from leaving through locking the doors and the staircase rail wrapping around his hand until yohan forces it to let gaon go; opening the door to the basement for a curious gaon.

+ the house is strongly influenced by yohan's emotions, which because they're complex and seemingly contradictory to everyone but himself, means it acts unpredictably. it's angry when gaon leaves because that's how yohan feels, but it lets jung sunah in after k's death since yohan brought her over for dinner previously

+ gaon gardening at the house and talking to it because he recognizes that it has a personality, the same way his plants do. the house starts to like him, like a stray cat would

+ like mike flanagan's 'haunting of bly manor', TDJ mansion hungers and has a 'stomach'

- it either loses power or actively releases its inhabitants as they make a family/are no longer isolated from the world/find love through gaon

putting these ideas out there so it lives outside my brain until i am interested in writing the fic

One of my favourite cinematography aspects of tdj is that it has multiple scenes of chaos mirroring each other (people scrambling in the church fire, the SRF gala in ep4, the school children fighting in the flashback of yohan's past, the final act in ep 16 before yohan explodes the courthouse). While ep 16 is very much Yohan's reproduction of that commotion in the middle of the fire, he...was not in the church yet when it happened. He's seen running towards it, he's pushed out of the way by heo jungse, cha gyeonhui etc but when he actually steps foot inside there's only isaac, heejin and elijah trapped by the debris and fire.

At first I thought ep 16 was simply Yohan putting the SRF and heo jungse + his wife in the same situation as 10 years ago for his vengeance, but now im realising he's actually recreating the terror felt by his family and making them experience it by feeling completely trapped and at his mercy...

Hi! Do you think about making a analysis on the last episode of TDJ? (If you haven't done already) I just rewatched this ep the other day and I feel like no matter how many times I watch it, there will always be something that surprises me. Every episode does this to me actually.

Not the last episode as a whole, no, since that would probably make my brain explode xD Like, it's just too big? ANY episode would be too big considering the number of details, plot points, character moments etc. they contain. I wouldn't even know where to start analysing a full episode, at least not in the way I usually write my metas.

I'd need a narrower framework to build my analysis on, like a specific relationship, a specific scene, a specific plotline, a specific theory etc. Which is why my two more detailed metas so far are very contained with very clear goals. That's how much I have to narrow it down to be able to accurately convey something, because otherwise there would just be too much information for me to condense into something coherent. And I would have no idea in what order to present things. Not to mention that I'd be terrified of missing something important because the scope would be too big.

(I'm also just a terribly wordy person who can't write short things to save my life. Can you IMAGINE how long that analysis would be? x'D)

I obviously have a lot of details and ideas stored in my brain, but in order to convey them in a way that's actually digestible to other people, I need some sort of prompt or structure first. And, sometimes, that structure can actually be a fanfic. I'm not joking when I say that Who Holds the Devil is basically a gigantic meta at this point, because I'm pouring ALL of my thoughts and observations from the drama into it.

Which, in all honesty, if I had known that when I started? Then I probably wouldn't have written the fic x'D Because it's so, so daunting to go: "Alright, I'm going to summarize all my thoughts and feelings about this piece of media into this one work!" Granted that this one work is huge enough to fit A LOT of thoughts and feelings, but it's still a pretty insane endeavour.

Anyway! I'm sorry if that's a bit of a disappointing answer. I just don't think that my specific brand of analysis would be all that efficient on such a broad scale. I'm more of a detail-oriented person? So it would have to be something specific from the last episode, not the episode as a whole.

➣ for me, this is THE post-canon gahan fic. what stands out for me is while gaon may be awfully lovesick, he doesn’t completely isolate himself - still maintains and forms friendships with people. watching the development of this and the way he heals is EXQUISITE and it’s written EXQUISITELY. the yearning has a wonderful payoff too. it’s just really fucking amazing guys plz read it
