I did not think it was possible to watch The Devil Judge and miss the very obvious gay romance, but I'm reading random mainstream reviews and they all seem to think it straight? Like, they're asking why Ga-On doesn't end up with Su-Hyeon?

What on earth do they think is going on with Yo-Han and Ga-On if they're not queer? Is this how they think men treat their protégés? Or their rivals? What do they they think Yo-Han and Ga-On's relationship is?? What is their heterosexual explanation for that ending?!

Like I'm honestly baffled, the show makes very little sense if you miss the romance story at its heart. It's not just sexual tension sprinkled on top, (although how do you miss that?!) the romance is fundamental to the structure of the story.

An interesting side effect is that if you don't notice the queerness, the women characters feel sidelined. Which, yeah I could sort of see that. The two leads are men and most of the important women die. If you're looking through a heterosexual lens then Su-Hyeon could feel like a weak character who tragically pines and devoted herself to a (straight) man who doesn't see her.

But! If you're willing to see the queerness, the women become so rich and complicated, and they don't fit into little gendered boxes. (More thoughts on that possibly coming later.)

I'm living for your Devil Judge recaps! Your commentary is so much fun to read.

Imo the funniest thing about Ga On and Yo Hans living arrangement is that they've gotten into so many arguments. Most of them violent, and Yo Han has never told him to gtfo of his house. And Ga On doesn't consider packing his stuff and leaving. He just comes back and makes him dinner like nothing happened.

Thank you!  I love seeing other people’s reactions and going back to see my own initial reactions to things after time has passed, but I’m always glad to know someone else is reading them.

But yes, like, at first, okay, you’re staying to better investigate him. But then, like, he doesn’t kick you out and even when he’s throwing you into things and over desks and nearly stabbing you with scissors you’re like, cool, just gonna go to sleep in the next room and carpool to work together.  (I assume.  Like I want to see some of those awkward car trips.)

I’d like to say it would make sense if they were sleeping together but it really really wouldn’t.

I'm only on episode 10 of finally finished The Devil Judge, but so far and I still think that whenever Kim Ga On and Kang Yo Han are at home they are literally in a governess romance novel. Or sometimes a gothic romance novel. But they're definitely in a romance novel.

(If you like m/f historical romance, Tessa Dare's The Governess Game is a pretty good one.)
