You're absolutely right about the amount of angst in the Exocolonist tag on AO3. It's part of the reason why I stopped reading and started writing my own fanfiction. I got tired of everything being angsty or tragic when the game already has enough of that sort of content. I mostly write Sol/Tangent fluff but I haven't published anything yet… I can assure you none of it's angst though!

Also, there's a small fandom here on Tumblr! If you want something more active you might want to try Discord. There's the Exocolonist Creator Community (fanworks) and the Living Quarters (18+ only) servers.

was talking abt this on twit but vace+sol is one of my fave exocolonist dynamics bc theres soooo many ways to take it like. theyre besties theyre worsties theyre going to kill each other in unarmed combat, sols got him on a childleash and is teaching him to stop biting every single person he knows, they flirt sickeningly and outrageously even when dating other people and they break up in every universe they start dating in unless they go into space together and die in a wormhole explosion, sols the entire reason he learns to be content planetside and find himself and peace and goes to therapy and if sol doesnt indulge his stupid manchild ego from the time theyre like fifteen to nineteen their entire rship can just crash and burn into absolute nothing, theyre jsut. theyer so much theyre so fucking funny. i love them

bc in some ways the helio is v forward thinking! nomi mentions it if u ask abt their gender right. theyre like 'oh i was worried there might be ppl mean abt it bc u guys are less advanced than us but u guys have nb ppl here too!!' or however the dialogue goes right. expectation internally that the stratos are going to be Less cool abt this stuff than helio but also like

idk i think the whole like. patriarchal? militaristic? vibes of the helio are really fascinating when they come up against this sort of thing. like. vace's dialogue about..... what is it. if youre not fighting, having kids, or working in engineering to help the war effort, you're a waste of resources. right. it's so like...... interesting that in both his best end (peace post therapy) and his worst (any where he and nem are still together. god) he has a family+kids right. and i think that's something that he genuinely really wants! but also the Way it's been presented to him on the helio is so damaging that he can't really have it without taking the time to self examine WHY he wants it and breaking out of hte mold of being Assigned to want it u kno

thinking abt how i dont like the idea that tang+dys have besk's ex-bf in them and how there's multiple ways to take them Not

like on the one hand them not being related would like..... really emphasizes the distance between besk and this guy. like........ not even the echo of him is here for her to find anywhere. not even a single speck of this one last happy time is anywhere where besk can reach u kno

but also the opposite idea that besk like... purposefully did Not want her kids to have his dna is really interesting too. going off the theory that besk had the kids essentially as both an extension of herself + her illness but also a way to extend her own lifespan with the idea she would likely kill herself regardless like....... if part of besk's coping strategy is also tied to just thinking abt this happy time on earth like. she wouldnt want to put any single part of it into the children shes having as a direct result of her mental illness right. like. her kid is literally named dysthymia (and again i do not think tangent was a planned child lol. hence. u kno. tangent) shes not going to want to associate her Happy Memories wtih that kind of thing imo u kno?

on the topic of exocolonist characterization stuff i like probably one of my absolute faves is this really really small thing from vace.... during his 50 event he asks if u’d wanna go into space one day and no matter what u say he agrees w/u. like if ur like “no way” he goes “yeah me neither im a soldier ill stay” but if u go “yeah!” he goes on and on agreeing its v fun... i really like that aspect of his character
