Hello!! Love your Wizard Marriage AU!
Did the Land of Ooo know that Ice King and Magic Queen were married immediately or was there an incident? Also are there any other tidbits of lore you’ve thought out but no one’s asked yet?<3
awww thanks. i totally wasnt expecting the engagement ive gotten so far!
for your question, the answer is yes! its one of those things thats generally common knowledge, since magic queen puts him in the special thanks of all her books and mentions him as her husband there, and ice king brags about magic queen a lot. they also have a habit of showing up to events and parties uninvited and being irritatingly romantic. they use the cringiest pet names possible. no youre MY schmoozy pie.
there is an incident at one point, though. i dont think finn and jake are actually aware of magic queen at the beginning of the series. ice king is kind of a regular nuisance due to him sometimes snatching things up, but theyre not the super political or bookish types and the parties they tend to go to arent really the kind that ik and mq like to show up at together. they dont realize what ik is doing with the stuff he steals. mq actually slightly swaps with magic man in this au, and thus is the one who fucks up finn in this aus version of “freak city”, after a misunderstanding that leads to him breaking into their home and beating up ice king when shes just come back from one of her research trips and theyre trying to have a nice dinner.
finn is extremely surprised to find out ice king is married. he thought the dude was just talking out his ass about his wife. this expression of surprise only makes magic queen more upset.
and, for other trivia, since i mentioned him… magic man makes his first appearance as NORMAL MAN. his backstory is slightly similar- he lost his wife to golb. however, he initially did not have magic, and was banished from mars in his obssessive search for it in order to get margles back. he becomes magic queens assistant, since he displays interest in her work, and she likes the idea of having a pupil. in actuality, hes after her magic… and he manages to get it.

oh you know. it would be a fun detail if the reason xl finds mq's challenges (seems like a good word!) comforting is BC of hc... bc in the actual novel post 800 year friendship divorce it seemed to me xl was too weary of everything to be... reactive. receptive to mq being abrasive & perhaps also too taken aback by some key differences in mqfx behavior (the way they dont quite have the deferential undercurrent of their old dynamic) to find anything about their interactions to be comforting in the familiar Or the new & exciting of a break from status quo... but with the newfound peace he's found with hc as well as perhaps the newfound discomfort its all in a different light. what was grating and made him reflect on past hurts is smoothed over by their reconcilliation (TO A DEGREE‼️) And made him feel less restrained by (gestures at the devotion) ... and what if mq could pick up on this in some way and understand that the receptiveness hes receiving is not solely his own charm, or whatever hes willing to attribute to himself and not their history. and what if feng xin was also there 🧍‍♂️
ooooough i love this sm. hc refreshes and revitalizes xl who then starts to open his eyes to new experiences. mq realizing that the affect that hc has had on xl and how that in turn is making xl receptive to something more between and not being sure if he should love or hate hc for it. feng xin is there and sees it all but doesnt know what to make of it but feels oddly left out.
xie lian wouldnt have to worry about letting mu qing down in the same way he might fear letting hc down. because first of all mu qing has already betrayed him in the past and apologized and they got over it. although it would be fun to bring that up again 👀 plus mu qing was always kind of defiant even when he wasnt being weirdly caustic and supportive all the the same time like even when he was still a loyal servant he would still do things like in this following excerpt
While he spoke, he saw a worn-down handcart further up the alley and said, “Put the kid in that cart and pull it to go.”
Mu Qing immediately voiced, “Just so we’re clear, I will not pull that thing up the mountain.”
“No one’s asking you to,” Feng Xin said.
and hc would never be that blunt about something like that he would do anything xl asked even if he found a way to get someone else to do it he wouldnt say he wouldn't do it
and hc says he accepts xl completely having seen him at his lowest that may be true or he may believe thats true but things change!! and while xl may at first feel relieved to have someone so unconditionally supportive but he's still human!!! and can be changed and with those changes come new fears!!! such as letting down the person who has never wronged you!! and possibly even getting tired of that person a bit!!!
thats so true about xie lian being too weary to be reactive he really is just like "whatever its fine its all in the past i dont care im just floating through life" but all the love and devotion might just bring him back to life enough to start making big mistakes <3

okay im rewriting tgcf (only in my head im lazy) here are my notes on hua/lian specifically this is long bc fuck it. major spoilers obviously and same trigger warnings as the content of the book
disclaimer disclaimer disclaimer that i dont know anything about the cultural background of anything in tgcf or story tropes etc etc this is just I Think It Would Be Neat If..
there’s not really any reason to keep hc as a kid in the backstory BUT in the story in the intro (which i like narratively) it still says that it was a child who xie lian caught. it’s one of those things that got added to the legend to make xie lian seem even more noble, there are also probably a few other inaccuracies in the intro that get found out as the story progresses. in actuality hc was kind of a known troublemaker to the city guards or whatever or had been in the past. maybe his mother just passed after a long illness and his tumble off the wall was intentional. either way he’s kind of pissed at xie lian for saving him. xie lian is concerned about his health so he has to stay at the palace for a while he recovers and only interacts with xie lian a few times. there is a point where he says out loud all the things about the divide between the rich and the poor that have been illustrated by the scenes with mu qing. feng xin tells him to shut up but mq goes dead silent bc he kind of agrees but can’t say and does have his loyalty to xie lian (its a whole thing) and the resentment begins
also i think young hc’s personality is similar to his personality in the present but a bit more reserved and he’s got like this plucky streak or something. also he is unquestionably gay
anyway hc sneaks out of the palace and xie lian catches him obviously but they have a brief little heart to heart where xie lian is like “look you can go if you want here take this money food” etc and demonstrates that he has actually listened to what hc has to say and hc is like “wow no one other than my mom has ever listened to me in my life so thats what that feels like i kind of like it” and he probably is a bit awestruck by xie lian in different ways and after that is like “okay this kingdom sucks but.. that guys not so bad”
sad ironic sense that if xie lian hadnt ascended until he was older he may have actually be able to do something about the problems in the kindgom but alas we have a cycle to perpetuate
the “take me as the meaning of your life” scene still happens p much the same but xl doesnt recognize hc who is actually now at his lowest point. hc tried to find ways to make things better for people like him but he simply did not succeed (maybe his were efforts quashed by the corrupt authorities? its implied probably) and he’s more disillusioned with the kingdom and life than ever but still is holding on to those memories of xie lian as proof that it doesnt have to be like this but that thread is slipping until!! whose fucking voice is that??? thats right its the one person you ever believed was truly good and went and proved you right by ascending to the heavens at age 17!!! guess its time to stan him forever
anyway hc joins the army but legally or whatever and tbh i would have hated the flower cave scene regardless of anything i just hate any sort of s*x pollen trope or anything so thats gone (they can have a wound tending scene or something tho thats the good shit) and instead we have HL getting overwhelmed by some other demons or something together and xie lian protects hc and they both get injured very badly (maybe hc would lose a limb but im not sure how that would work once hes a ghost so thats on hold for now until i figure it out) and xl is fine but this situation ends up being part of why mq kicks hc out of the army but yes hc still ends up dying on the battlefield anyway </3
the wuming stuff is the same i think but also at some point xl is despairing and says something about that guy he saved from falling and wonders what happened to him and fire ghost wuming is like !!!!! (wait does this happen in canon? honestly it should)
in mount tong’lu i was tempted to actually have hc have a similar moment to the bamboo hat scene with the humans who are trapped in there but im not sure if i just want it to be the same as xie lian’s story... also i like the idea of hc needing to hang onto his devotion to get through his first few centuries of being a ghost so maybe he’s just inspired by xie lian’s sacrifice with the sword and the souls and thats why he claws his own eye out as a sacrifice
so this can go one of two ways from here!!! both are me projecting hardcore so take them with a grain of salt im not saying im right about the way relationships should be these a re just my thoughts <3
1. (the not fun one but it still has a happy ending) the story more or less continues the same as canon. pure and simple devotion is what carries hc through the centuries. we get to see some ghost city antics and its fun but there is nothing complicated about the devotion hc just wants to find xl and protect him. hualian eventually meet. they get along pretty well!! eventually there are cracks. when you hold someone in your mind for so long you have expectations for them that no person can meet consistently. hc thinks that since he’s seen xl during the worst time in his life that he can handle anything but it turns out that as amazing as xl is, he is also just a person and sometimes he is wrong or irrational or annoying. xl is so happy to have someone who will listen to him talk that he kind of neglects to really get to know who hc is as a person and hc is kind of like “huh i didnt expect this but im kind of hurt. i genuinely thought that i just wanted to serve and protect you but actually im my own person and this is weird” but he doesnt say anything he thinks he has to stick to his promise and it gets kind of uncomfortable!! maybe his luck goes haywire bc his faith gets rocked for the first time ever and they end up having to talk it out but their relationship is stronger for it <3
2. (i think this one is fun) hc struggles with waiting. he does it but its hard. he has doubts and when all his efforts to find xl are fruitless he starts to grow bitter and curses the day that xl saved him. his faith burns low but doesnt go out. then ghost city!! hc realizes that he can finally help people like him, even if theyre ghosts now and hes grateful for the chance to do this and grateful to xl and resigns himself to waiting. but its still hard!! he realizes that his luck is tied to his devotion and gets kind of pissed about it!!! he tries to remember all the good things about xl but its hard!!! his search becomes more about repaying a debt so he can be free than anything else, he just wants to help the common people spirits with no strings attached (this actually allows him to keep his luck bc he has the same wish as xl and thats what makes him a true believer!! is this corny? does it make sense? i dont care) and so eventually when he finds xl he’s like okay how quickly can i repay this debt/how can i keep my powers but then xie lian is... so good... and hc actually really likes him he remembers why he swore his devotion in the first place. now hes conflicted!!! dont worry they fall in love tho <3
wow this was really long if you read this hiiiii. anyway when i reread ill try to pay more attention to yin yu and he xuan for hc’s 800 years. hua cheng we’re gonna get you some friends and lore i swear to god

one of the things that pisses me off with the novels is how class inequality is handled w/ MQ,like yeah everyone treats him with suspicion, pity or as a weird exotic trinket and after a certain point he snaps and leaves,he literally has to pull himself by his bootstraps to get somewhere, now let's disregard all of that backstory and have people(HC and FX)mistreat him for the lols, like idk esp with HC it makes me uncomfortable how the narrative treats this whole thing(nonsensical rambling, sorry)
oh yeah it sucks like the broom thing is actually cruel everyone disregards his feelings and mocks him for something that was completely out of his control and i really do feel so bad for him like he really did work so hard and he does have a good heart and he just doesnt get the respect he deserves and has earned. unfortunately i think it makes a lot of sense that he is mistreated in that way. i have problems with the way tgcf handles certain aspects of its story, but for the most part not this one tbh. it is common for people from a poor background to be looked on like that, even when theyve been able to climb out of it (and not to discredit mu qing's hard work, but this pretty much only happens with the help of someone from a higher status. and thats unfair and it shouldnt be like that but it is often the case!!)
classism is real like that and the way its depicted with mu qing shows it pretty well imo even way back in the flashbacks like the other disciples at the palace who bully him for the cherry picking thing and pretty much just say "wow look at this guy taking food to feed his poor family" when there is LITERALLY nothing wrong with that in any way at all its not even like the cherries are off limits its just cherries. its not morally wrong it at all and its not against the rules but they just dont like him and they use the fact that he's a servant and poor against him. its not right!! but it does happen. and even 800 years later despite mu qing ascending he was still once a kid from a poor neighborhood and while maybe not everyone knows that anymore, it never stops being true.
its interesting to me that both he and hua cheng came from pretty similar backgrounds (although hc also had the whole being cursed thing etc. also i desperately wish his background in xianle and in the 800 years was expanded on more it BOGGLES my mind that mxtx just took those details about him out im like PUT IT BACK IN!!! i know this thing is xie lian's pov but come on pleasepleaseplease) but they have such an antagonistic relationship with each others. obviously a huge difference is the way they interact with xie lian its such an interesting contrast that hc just adores him completely while mq was actually his friend but also his servant so he had a much more complicated relationship with him (this is also why im more invested in the trio than i am in hua/lian, i love complexity and i dont find the simply devoted thing that compelling in the long run. there are still things about them that i think are impactful and i do relate to aspects of it, but to me personally it feels like an incomplete story) i dont much to say on that right now, its something i want to pay attention to in my reread because i do think its interesting. on the one hand sometimes people from similar backgrounds like that can stick together and understand each other. on the other hand sometimes they can judge each other harsher than anyone else because of how theyve internalized things also in general i think sometimes we can judge people who are similar to us quite a bit because we think we know better than them
this ended up being so long and i just dumped all my thoughts on you sorry!! 😅😅😅 this is part of the story i do find really interesting its part of why mu qing is such a fave of mine theres a lot going on and for all that he often says the wrong thing in the wrong way, he's much more aware of how the world works than the other two because he's lived it and hes right!! when he does leave he's right!! everything he says that they need to do to survive xl and fx end up doing after he leaves he was right!! and after 800 years he still gets everything thrown back in his face it isnt right!!! but i do unfortunately think that its very real </3

a trend I have seen is people writing fengqing w mq having an 800 yr old crush but I actually think it would be more impactful if fx is the one with messy mq feelings while mq pines impossibly after xl,like fx is kept up at night cause mq is pissing him off and making him feel warm and he doesn't know why, meanwhile mq is hating himself cause he dreams of holding xl's hand,I love the thought of them being messy teens w feelings
THIS IS SO MESSY IM OBSESSED!!! i love mess i love confusing homoerotic teenage friendships only getting messier and more painful with time like feng xin also having the thing of staying in the mortal realm a lot of the time during the 800 years so hes got the chance to either romanticize it all a bit like "well really mu qing's not that bad, he pisses me off but it was nice having him around, totally just as a friend or someone who also went through the fall of our kingdom, its fine really" OR he doubles down on hating him in his mind and only remembering the bad but then whenever they would run into each other in heaven and have one of their famous fist fights he's both right and wrong either way and he gets this funny feeling in his chest when he sees mu qing like all achey and floaty and hes like "this must be hatred and i dont know what to with it but i need him to look at me right now or else" and they do fight about something but he remembers that there are things he does like about mu qing and im not looking at the text rn to back this up im just thinking out loud but i like the idea that feng xin would actually laugh or at least want to laugh at the sarcastic things mu qing says to other people like maybe when its not directed at him (and maybe specifically at people fx doesnt like lol) he would actually agree. and thats POST-fall of xian le so god them as teenagers.... i think about it all the time like how their first meeting would have gone because like i imagine that at first mu qing was quite polite in the same way he is to everyone in early book 2 and probably suspected that feng xin was looking down on him the way the other disciples did and tbh feng xin was probably aware that mu qing was disliked and that could have put him on edge around him as xie lian's bodyguard OR he could have tried to be friendly only for mu qing to be suspicious and cold and reject him which leaves feng xin confused about why he's so upset about it... but either way!!! mu qing is clearly comfortable enough with both xie lian and feng xin in book 2 to talk to them the way he does... they were friends 😭😭😭 anyway yes god the mess god yes mu qing every day of his life wrestling with his feelings about genuinely admiring xie lian and feeling so special that he was chosen but also the difference between them that keeps mu qing at a distance AND affects the way that he is treated by everyone else so he resents it too but also he really does care about xie lian and wants more from him than he thinks he could ask for oh my god i just thought about him wanting to be xie lian's f-f-friend and i genuinely felt an ache in my chest i have to stop typing now

do we know how mq's mom died? wouldn't it be super horrifying and also extremely heartbreaking if she died from human face disease?JUST IMAGINE xl finding out that one of his biggest burdens took away mq's mother, it would break him
i dont think we know but ohhh my god oh my god more pain and suffering thats so ;___; omg i do think all the time about the fact that xie lian never catches up with feng xin and mu qing about what happened after they went their separate ways and tbh i dont think its something they would do willingly i actually think it would take a lot for them to talk about it openly i mean even when mq apologies for the 33 officials thing im pretty sure he's kinda vague about it like all he really says is like "back then" or just refers to it as an incident and doesnt specifically say what happened but they Know (also the bit where mq accidentally repeats what was said... scream) and xie lian never tells anyone what happened in the temple he doesnt even tell hua cheng even tho he knows WHICH ALSO i have mixed feelings about like thats definitely another instance of hc as the idealized love interest that i understand but dont find super gripping like I GET IT i really do like there are things that have happened in my life that i neverrrrrrrr want to tell anyone about like i dont ever want to talk about them at all and the fantasy of not having to tell someone but them knowing anyway? i do get it i do see the appeal i do wish it was that easy and idk if i necessarily think that xl SHOULD have actually talked about it because i think talking about it would be really painful and difficult but i do think it might have been more impactful if he had... anyway yeah 😔😔😔 i dont think xie lian would want to find out more about the terrible things that happened post-fall of xian le but i think he would be upset about finding out that something like that hurt someone he cared about and i am tucking that idea away in my head for later...

sooo... mulian living together.... do you think they would sleep together or apart? im thinking xie lian is a big fan of cuddles but i dont remember if there's canon to prove or disprove that and im thinking mu qing's love languages might be physical touch and acts of service so like. maybe not at first mu qing might have had to Relax!! first but i think they would cuddle. and maybe baby mulian would have mq getting up first but i think end of canon mulian would b mutually sleeping terribly & the weird inconsistent waking times that comes w that. im definitely not thinking all that hard about how this would work within the story im just thinking about them...
omg 🥺🥺🥺 yes i think they would cuddle but it would probably take mu qing a bit to relax enough to really enjoy it and not question it and doubt it but once he did he would be so happy to finally have this good thing thats all his.... i can definitely see him being the early riser of the two of them and just sitting there looking at xl for a moment being like i cant believe this is real AND that could make it so sweet if xie lian ever tries to get up earlier to do something nice for mu qing although i bet for a second mq would be like why is he gone i knew this would happen but then actually no he's not gone he's just in the other room and mq can finally start to truly accept that hes not going anywhere (+ theyre staying together this time if its post-canon) that works if theyre sleeping at odd times too and ohhhh my god now im thinking about either one of them waking up in the night and going to sit outside and having a moment and then the other one coming out to sit with them quietly and having a little talk and then going back to bed to hold and be held.... i think they would make each other feel held and so comforted oh my god Them 🥺😭

reading tgcf chapters 72 - 88 end of book 2. body horror kind of in this one. if you know you know and i did include an excerpt of it
i didnt take any notes from 72-76 but uhhhh shit has hit the fan
Tumblr media
fuuuuuuck. but he couldnt get there fast enough and then THAT happened to that family FUCK :(
Tumblr media
xie lian has indeed been greatly sheltered and this is a painful if inevitable moment. very curious about where he goes from here :(
Tumblr media
:pensive: the universe has its own rhythm. perhaps it does but im wondering if this is part of it orrrrrrr
wait theres a girl. shes pretty. feng xin is impressed by her this is a first. is she going to be important? is it too much to ask for? to see a girl do things?
xie lian and the king... i sad. but the anger is real from both sides regardless of their arguments. i sad
Tumblr media
ahhh flashbacks to religious studies. read a whole essay about contagion magic vs similarity magic. pretty sure it was by one of those early anthropologists who were ummm racist but this is definitely a thing that people do
damn so xie lian’s first experience of killing anyone was during the revolt and he killed thousands. wow. “mere ants” like those crushed for him by servants. hoooo boy
Tumblr media
:pleading: hes so good and im so sad for him to painfully learn that just being good isn’t enough
Tumblr media
awwwww. </3
ohhh wait i think the epub version doesnt spoiler out the authors notes awwww i was enjoying the mystery but okay. not sure if i would have guessed this without tbh theres a lot of kids (2) running around with bandages in this book. but i guess the saber thing isnt likely to be anything else. also ohhhhhhhhh hong hong-er... little reddie... ah i see now :(
land of the tender; body of gold hard pressed against desire. hmmmm. im. hmmm. remember that scene with the prostitute in ghost city and how i was glad it ended quickly? i miss those days. i mean murderous desires/lustful desires okay sure thats something fine but. hmm not so sure how i feel about the rest of this. and the hair thing has significance according to the notes. i mean. hmm. moving on for now. ive seen spoilers for more about hualian’s relationship but im gonna wait to comment on it until i know everything
i would actually be curious to see feng xin and mu qing interact without xie lian when theyre still having to work together i wonder if they are more chill or less chill bc clearly feng xin cares a lot about xie lian and im wondering what theyre like with each other without him around. to be fair tho since theyre his generals im not sure if theres much room for that
human face disease time. oh boy. things really are only getting worse. im also suspecting that this disease was intentionally brought into the city to hasten its downfall but we shall see
Tumblr media
saving this for the illustration of the differences between feng xin and mu qing. not sure what it says about me but im finding mu qing relatable that is 100% what i would do but i feel much more fond of feng xin. interesting
Tumblr media Tumblr media
thank you for being a beacon of amusement in these trying times. distract your bickering friends by forcing them to play improv games. also the differences between fx and mq continue to interest me
Tumblr media
awfully convenient there guoshi. i have to say that its looking more and more like the bad shit thats happening in xianle was actually not to do with xie lian. the fact that the yong’an rebels were being supplied? whatever the fuck is going on with lang ying.... i could be wrong but thats what im thinking im wondering how much of this was already laid out or at the very least poised to happen before xie lian intervened
here it comes this is the unsettling body horror bit
Tumblr media
BRUHHHHHHHH. HORRIFIC. IM SORRY BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT IN ADAPTATION FOR THE CHILLS IT WOULD GIVE ME.
hmmm after this its mu qing who is like “hey ummm you kinda just chopped that guy’s leg off when he hadn’t actually asked you to. kinda fucked up also could definitely turn on you” makes sense that it was mu qing who said that he’s clearly very smart and bc of his background he’s more likely to think of things from a different perspective than xie lian and feng xin. he’s been scornful of commoners before but he definitely understands them more so than the other two
Tumblr media
just when i thought this couldnt get more horrific. no rest for anyone what an awful fate
Tumblr media
saving this as a note on mu qing as a character and his attitude towards xie lian. what xie lian says here about the curse is interesting. the faces/souls vs the ones they are infecting. its awful for both of them and neither are the only truly at fault theyre being pit against each other
its telling that mu qing is the one who is telling xie lian that line about there not being a second cup of water. also BIG ARGUMENT im bookmarking this to come back to in the present day
looks like celestial palace is coming down and im bitterly remembering the fact that xie lian toppled his own statue earlier to let lang ying get away... who then presumably planted the curse.... sighs
Tumblr media
the bits with xie lian’s parents made me tear up. this is, what the kids call, relatable.
Tumblr media
hmmm dont think feng xin is always going to feel this way lmao
Tumblr media
oohh that is a cool image
Tumblr media
i.... sad. and so book 2 ends!!! im wondering when we find out exactly how the split between our trio went down. im sure its sad
politically im still not sure exactly what the message is trying to be i mean obviously theres corruption that completely throws the poor under the bus but so far its also been clear that xie lian actually cant do anything about it. but!!! also xie lian doesnt understand a lot about the world, he’s been sheltered and he’s a prince and he wants to save the world and i love him for that but he hasn’t seen what the reality of life is for a lot of people he’s looking at everything from the position of the nobility and even with all his kindness i dont think thats ever enough to bring about meaningful change. how can it? idk but we still got a LONG ways to go
