It’s crazy ironic how you go on and on about how “Penelope stans call Eloise a white feminist/criticise her/etc to bring up their fav (Penelope)” when literally all u do is criticise Penelope as a half baked attempt at defending Eloise.
Let me be clear - I am not a Penelope fan. I do not like her, and I fully agree with your criticisms of her. That said, it’s ridiculous how pretty much ur only method of responding to Eloise crit is by bringing up things Penelope has done. Like, they are two different people. Penelope’s bad behaviour does not in fact have any bearing on how Eloise should be examined.
And all this while constantly complaining about the same damn thing u urself are doing ??? Insane levels of hypocrisy honestly
You know, I went a good chunk of the summer without getting any obnoxious anon messages. But all good things must come to an end, and of course, the peace would end over Regency Era Perez Hilton. So let's get into this anon.
If you've read my blog you'll see that my issues with Penelope Featherington pre-date her falling out with Eloise. I've said I think she punches down quite a lot. I've said I find it wildly unethical that her stans call what she does "reporting" because reporters have ethics, editors, a responsibility to fact-check, and ways of being held accountable if/when we get something wrong. When you're hiding behind a pseudonym and printing whispers and rumors as fact, with no way of verifying if it's truth that's just not happening. Additionally, at the end of season one after the reveal I posted that I didn't think Penelope's hurt feelings over an unrequited crush were as serious as the threat facing Marina as an unmarried pregnant girl (google fallen women, they tend not to live long). I don't think that Colin deserved to be tricked, but given the alternatives of a lifetime of poverty or being married off to a creep twice your age who approaches an engagement the same way a person purchases a horse, I understand why the desperate 17-year-old pursued the boy her own age who she knew would at least treat her well. Not only that, but I said I found it gross that she was smiling in Marina's face while having exposed her secret in the cruelest way possible.
Here's another Eloise-free critique of Penelope, she's the worst kind of mean girl, the kind with a victim complex who wants to do nasty things while still being seen as an angel who can do no wrong. Do you want another criticism of Penelope that has nothing to do with Eloise? I think it's icky that she mocked Kate for being a spinster and called one of the few Indian women on this show a beast. I heard that was in the books too, but fun fact, Black and brown people being compared to or flat-out called animals has a racist history and present. Despite the "Penelope woman of the working class people" song and dance, I pointed out that she's trying to stay in Madame Delacroix’s good graces because she can blow the whistle on her.
I've said, it annoys me that people behave as if Penelope's crush being unrequited is a terrible hardship that justifies all her misdeeds, when Colin has never been cruel to her about romantic feelings he doesn't know are there. Contrary to Penelope stans version of history he hasn't tried to lead her on or hurt her, he treats her like a friend and nothing more. In Queen Charlotte, I said it was a dick move to needle the Queen about her lack of heirs during her granddaughter's funeral.
Now, you're saying that I only use Eloise to criticize Penelope, but not only is that untrue it's devoid of context. I only started comparing Eloise and Penelope because after their falling out Penelope's stans started saying that Eloise was a privileged white feminist as a reason that Penelope's actions weren't wrong and why she had no right to feel betrayed. Eloise's feminism is flawed, there's a lot she hasn't considered because she's been sheltered. ICYMI, I pointed out that she failed to understand that due to their class differences, Theo was in more danger than she was because he didn't have a rich family nor the protection that comes with her surname. I even agreed with Theo getting frustrated with her because due to class he is vulnerable in a way she is not. Furthermore, when Penelope stans say Eloise is an entitled white feminist it's not really about what Eloise has done, it's said in service of absolving Penelope of any wrongdoing. I've pointed out that it's said as if in comparison Penelope is Audre Lorde and hasn't been almost as privileged as Eloise up until her father died.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Who acts like more of an entitled white feminist. The girl who is ignorant or the girl slut shaming other women and notably hurting women of color for her own selfish gain? Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony would be proud. Sure, it's despicable that they used racism to gain support for women's suffrage and threw Fredrick Douglas under the bus, still wanting voting rights is less selfish than wanting the high and financial gain that comes with running an anonymous burn book.
Call me a hypocrite if you want but I've got the receipts to show I started criticizing Penelope way before she fell out with Eloise. And frankly, it's hypocritical of you not to realize that my Eloise and Penelope comparisons are a response to the "Eloise crit" that are just thinly layered Penelope apologism and revisionist history.
Have the day you deserve anon.

RULES
RULE ONE/OOC INFORMATION Hi, my name is Kel, I'm over 21+ and use the pronouns she/her. Time zone is GMT.For now, my blog will run on a queue as I'm busy with some real life stuff. But sometimes, I may come online for an hour or two, depending on my mood. Blog is selective, private and mutual only. Also OC, multi fandom and multi-muse friendly too.
RULE TWO/THREADS AND REPLIES  Replies can take a while to reply to, but I am not ignoring anyone. Please message if I haven't replied within a month. The best way to begin threads are through sending ask memes. I will also post open starters and maybe the occasional starter call. Not really a plotting person either; prefer to go with the flow.
RULE THREE/TRIGGERS I don't really have any triggers. That being said I will tag other people's triggers the best I can, and if I don't feel free to send a message and let me know. Don't send anon hate either. We all make mistakes and can't remember everything. Regarding shipping, I'm open to anything really. That being said, don't force any ships on any of my characters. I'll just unfollow/block if it continues to happen.
RULE FOUR/ETIQUETTE I do not tolerate any forms of hate. Racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia and any other forms of hate are not tolerated on this blog and I don't want to see any of it on the dash. It's an immediate hard block if I see anything. Respect each other, it's not that hard.
RULE FIVE/SHIPPING. Regarding shipping, I'm open to anything really. That being said, don't force any ships on any of my characters. I'll just unfollow/block if it continues to happen. I mostly ship for chemistry, but don't mind discussing ships beforehand if anyone wants to try anything out.
RULE SIX/SMUT AND MATURE THEMES Smut will not be featured on this blog. All other mature themes will be tagged accordingly and I'm pretty much open to anything except rape, incest etc.

You and those two little bitter betty Edwina stan accounts “Kate was badly written 😤🤬😡🤢🤮” yet she’s one of the most loved, obsessed over, written about, talked about character on this show (the root of y’all’s problem with her lrt). Y’all just don’t like her, can’t bear that other people do and are incapable of keeping her out of your stinky ugly spiteful mean girl mouths. It be three dumb bitches telling each other exactly.
I don't know if you've heard, because it does happen in many fandoms, but a character can be beloved in many forms and still have the writers fumble their storyline or arc a little (eg. Bonnie from TVD, even though I love her as a character). Again, because this concept seems new to you, you can critique a character's actions and still enjoy them. Think about it, and I really want you to think: do you actually believe that Kate, who raised Edwina and read her fairytales and placed this idea of love in her head, would continue to go through with a wedding between her sister and Anthony, after he told her plain as day that he would not love her [Edwina] and would only think of Kate throughout, do you really think that Kate, putting aside her newly discovered feelings (bc she states that she hadn't realized her own by this point), would continue to push for a doomed wedding? It does not make sense, the show just wanted to keep unnecessary drama. But if you view that as something that Kate would do, then by all means, say that you understand her character more and just leave. It seems to be tricky for you, to critique and like a character at the same time, so if you can't do that and want to continue to be blissful about things, then do so and get off my page. Also, if I found Kate to be the "root of my problems" (nice choice of pulling something out of nowhere anon *hint: sarcasm*) then why would I constantly point out how she was done dirty in her own season, whether from promotional marketing or the way her storyline was changed (this is largely bc of the Featherington plot)? Why would I complain about her not having any storyline about how the loss of her parents impacted her? Like all these things I've talked about, and yet from the looks of it, since you seem to stalk my page, you couldn't find any of these multiple post but yet think you know everything about me from only one that also involves Edwina. Go off, I guess.
While Kate is a beloved character, she does have toxic fans, as any fictional character would and it definitely isn't her fault (largely because she is fictional, and also because, if she were real, probably wouldn't agree with some of you guys either tbh), and you would be the case in point. It's very funny that you come here through anon to attack me for something that, prior to the last statement above, isn't true or was simply contrived because you can't accept that a character can be liked and criticized, but sure, I'm the problem. You referring to me and other blogs, who I assume you've probably also filled their inboxes with hate---unless you have something better to do (I don't believe so) who also enjoy BOTH (bc you miss it a lot) Edwina AND Kate as "ugly, spiteful and mean" as well as "dumb bitches" but yet, sure, I'm the problem. I don't know, it's really seems as if you're the toxic one because at least I have the decency to not be a dick to others anonymously when, if there was a problem, I'd talk it up with them face to face (or where they can see my blog). But this seems like a common theme that you, and others like you, can't grasp, but yet myself and other Edwina fans, whose, again, pages you stalk but still come up short with information, flood our inboxes with hate and hurtful words.
What was it that you said again? Using the same words that you did in these regards, "It's like three dumb bitches telling each other exactly." Now, again, had you come here respectfully to talk and, I don't know, maybe not curse at me, we could of had a civil conversation where respect was shown both ways. However, I don't condone bullying actual people nor referring to myself or others as "bitches" and then being expected to give you anything cordial. I give what you give back. But still, have a nice day.

So rewatching season 1 and...fuck Pen honestly and Polin. She is so selfish! Also I highly doubt the stans would be so willing to forgive her, if she weren't played by a pretty, white, fat, actress. Like...lets say for example.
If the genders were switched. For this example though, I realize that society would be much kinder to Marina but still please, allow me to explain.
Percy Featherington, wishes to court Courtney Bridgerton, he's still fat, still part of the less than well liked Featheringtons, still 'Lord Whistledown' in this case, and still a shy, very insecure man...who believes he is entitled to miss Courtney Bridgerton simply because he has feelings for her. (Ironically, this description sounds very much like Lord Berbrooke but I digress.)
Martin, is a single father who also wishes to court, Miss Bridgerton because he wants a mother for his little girl. However, for whatever reason he hides the fact he has a daughter. Obviously, the truth is harder to hide, but he is trying to do what's best for himself and his child. Martin Thompson falls for Courtney. They share a mutual attraction....But Lord Whistledown reveals the truth...why? Because Percy has feelings for her, and he will not allow Martin to 'have her'....
....
Essentially, turning the story into a what if Berbrooke had indeed won the hand of Miss Bridgerton.
Penelope and Nicola are NOT fat. Stop fucking calling either of them that.
If you want to bring that shit into a conversation, leave this blog out of it. I'm not going entertain ya'll attempting to be fatphobic just to hate on Penelope or Nicola.
And Nicola herself says she doesn't consider herself plus size, etc.
So leave that shit alone and keep that shit out of this inbox. Next ask I get calling Pen or Nicola fat, I'm deleting and blocking the anon sending it.

Something to say about Penelope’s flaws
So this might touch a little on people’s sensibilities, you all know I’m a Penelope Stan, so if you don’t like Penelope, skip this post, because #Queen she’s a problematic character and that there’s nothing I love more than a complex character who has no moral high ground to stand on. Incidentally it’s also the reason I Like Anthony so much.
So yeah I pretty much love Penelope (and Colin). It’s up there in the blog header.
So I’ve been reading a lot of people keep talking about how bad exposing Marina was because she did it for revenge and she shouldn't have exercised her power like that and frankly I made another post about that ages ago, that could be summarized in the sentence : Marina was wrong in hurting Penelope, Penelope was wrong in exposing Marina, neither of them was right in the situation I accepted that and I got over it. That’s not what I’m going to talk about today.
It’s just that the problem seems to be that where there is a crime there is supposed to be a punishment and in the eyes of many people, Penelope wasn’t appropriately punished. At least not like other characters who at least got punched for their misdeeds.
As Lady Wistledown Penelope is also in the unique position of doling out punishment herself when she publishes things like the Berbroke scandal, or Anthony’s moral double standard in restricting Daphne while having an affair with Sienna. And that ticks people off a lot. It’s meant to actually. I mean who puts the secrets of society in the hands of a teenage outcast and expects it to go smoothly?.
It’s almost as if people want to willfully ignore that the narrative itself is punishing Penelope for what she did. In the last ep, Marina goes off with Phillip and from the audience perspective, we assume she will have a moderately better life in the future. But at the same time that Penelope exposed Marina’s pregnancy, she also loses her father, her dowry and the love of her life. In a narrative sense she IS getting punished just not as a direct result of her own actions. because the writers framed what she did as wrong and they made 'karma' happen. Leaving room in S2 for Penelope to experience the repercussions of all that 'divine retribution'
I say not as a direct result of her own actions because Lord Featherington is shown to have had a gambling addiction since way before Penelope became LW, so losing her dowry and her father had nothing to do with what she did. But Colin leaving WAS a direct result of Penelope’s actions towards Marina. Since the scandal of almost marrying Marina left Colin heartbroken and in need of distance, especially from people close to Marina, that even without Penelope’s suggestion of traveling, his family would most likely have come up with the idea themselves. Penelope still lost access to Colin because of what she did.
Penelope stans are not brushing that under the rug we love our problematic fave. Frankly Penelope has growing up to do and it makes for a more interesting plot to see her face her own karma. In S2 Penelope is going to be in a really tough spot, youngest of 3 sisters, unmarried, with no dowry, no male protection to make up for it and hopelessly pining for a man who she knows will hate her if he ever found out her secret.
It’s just that as a character Penelope only shows her good side in public (and bless Nicola for understanding this about Penelope and playing it up on screen), she is very good at hiding her true self from people, even from Eloise. So much that in the books it’s only Lady Danbury who notices that internally Penelope is sort of a b*ch (A nice one, but still, a b*ich). She’s had to be, considering all she’s written about people over the years.
And Penelope herself says that when she first started LW it was because she was angry and venting out her frustrations on paper. Think about it, LW first publication was written by an angry teenage debutante. I’m actually surprised that Marina’s life was the only one she ruined during her first season. If in 2021 there is nothing scarier than an angry teenage girl with multiple social media accounts. In regency England it must have been the same.
Sidenote on the subject of Lady Wistledown: until Penelope’s book, where it is revealed that it was not Agatha Danbury all along, LW is treated largely as an invisible antagonist in the series. She’s used as a plot device to inspire a healthy dose of fear of scandal in the Bridgertons, her unknown identity written as an excuse for lovers to be on their guard. LW is the hidden antagonist figure, lurking in the shadows with ambiguous intentions. That’s what Lady Wistledown is.
I’m sorry if it makes people uncomfortable to see Penelope portrayed that way especially because she’s a main character’s future love interest and it’s a sin that she is destined to eventually marry the love of her life.( You know, after she grows the f up, same as Colin. )
Penelope might look cute and cuddly next to Eloise, making jokes and listening to other people’s rants, but she was never meant to be squeaky clean, everything LW published were in fact her thoughts, her publishing alter ego is just another version of who she is. And who she has been since she started publishing LW at age sixteen. Doesn't make Penelope stans love her any less.
In fact, Romancing Mr Bridgerton is the equivalent of Colin falling inlove with a villian (or at the very least a morally grey anti hero) and trying to get said villain to leave behind the life of villainy in the name of love. And lets not forget Penelope ALMOST DIDN’T DO IT. Her villain alter ego was heard, and seen and she had power over the ton. She let Colin know that. If Cressida hadn’t put her foot in Penelope would have been more than a little reluctant to close shop.
Penelope isn’t intentionally mean, she doesn’t want to hurt people, her character isn’t written as someone who derives pleasure from other people’s misfortunes, but the fact that she writes Lady Wistledown means that it’s still in her to hurt people, especially those who she perceives have hurt her, or her loved ones.
In that sense, she might actually be very relatable.
Just as Anthony doesn’t respect women, he just respects Kate and the female members of his family. Penelope doesn’t seem to care much about who Lady Wistledown is affecting unless it’s herself or someone she cares about.
In the books we don’t get to see that. We are not shown the darker sides of the main characters because they are the main characters, but the show is doing it. Sure it’s very disappointing to see that our beloved JQ characters have pretty ugly flaws (Anthony’s misoginy, Daphne’s pretty priviledge, Eloise’s inmaturity, Penelope’s vindictiveness) but that’s what makes a great narrative.
To people who keep saying that Penelope deserves to be punished for what she did because she was vindictive enough to use LW to ruin Marina. Take a look at the direction that the narrative is taking for Penelope’s character. It’s almost exciting to see her painted as a villain who does wrong things and gets away with it because she can. But at the same time a lot of bad things she has no control over happen to her.
I personally love the genderbent take on the trope, because when S3 comes around it will technically be Colin’s job as a love interest to push for her redemption arc. And that’s never been done properly in TV. I mean girls plead for the male villain to reform with the power of love all the time. But I really want to see how a man can convince the female villain to reform for the sake of their love. Because reforming a rake would be easier than reforming Lady Wistledown that’s all I’m saying.
Maybe I just love characters like Penelope, maybe I also want to see her deal with her own bad Karma, because she earned a lot of it with her Marina stunt, I want her to eventually learn that power like hers should be used with caution, because she made an awful mistake and she should grow from it. But if she doesn’t, I’ll still support her with #YesQueen because I am okay with her doing whatever bad things she wants.
I’m a fan of Penelope end of story..
End note:
My choice in favorite characters doesn’t indicate my morals or actions in real life or depicts a valid representation of my state of mind. Many people act like it does and that is concerning.
I shouldn't have to defend myself for liking the characters I like. Truthfully half of the time guys, there’s really not much I can use. Other than the argument ‘I happen to like fictional problematic assholes very much’. And in case you're wondering, yes I’m fine with that, I’m okay with shipping and stanning characters that don’t have one single moral high ground to stand on. Again, I shouldn’t have to defend myself, because a) the character is fictional,  b) the person writing this post is real and c) The difference between a and b is something I am very clear about.
I personally have no trouble defending myself or my preference for certain characters because saying “I like Penelope, with her vindictiveness included” doesn’t cost me much. Or says anything about my person in real life. It’s just a bit tiring. And I’d rather spend that time simping over the character instead
