Who’s Afraid of Alex J. Newall? by Newt Schottelkotte is definitely worth a read to everyone who’s a fan of Rusty Quill Productions.

I count myself amongst those. Which is why I want to add to something mentioned in the article that I, alongside @nossorgs have special insight into:

The Transcripts.

In light of everything that has happened this year, the way people inside of RQ have been mistreated, abused, and exploited, the transcripts appear to be a minor issue. But as Newt has pointed out beautifully: They’re a symptom of something much bigger, namely disregard, miscommunication, incompetence, reliance on free fan labour and pretending to be something they’re not. In this case the producer of inclusive and accessible content.

The official RQ transcripts were launched early this year and it was immediately clear how terrible they are. Countless fans have surely reached out to RQ to let them know. After all, there’s a handy feedback form. A feedback form which, incidentally, is neither up-to-task, nor easily accessible as it isn’t linked anywhere near the transcripts, but only in the 26 January 2022 “news” update.

However, Nossorgs and I, as professionals in the language service industry, had concerns that couldn’t be addressed in the feedback form. So we sat down together and wrote a very long email, which we sent to RQ on 22 February 2022. We have received no reply.

I’m now, after checking with Nossorgs, publishing the email here, because I don’t want anyone to say “well maybe they didn’t know”. They knew. They just didn’t care.

They didn’t even care enough to fix these issues by today.

Here’s the email and all the exemplary screenshots are below a cut.

Dear Rusty Quill Team,

congratulations on launching your new website and releasing the transcripts for the RQ original shows.

Upon review of several transcripts (in particular the ones created for Rusty Quill Gaming), we wanted to voice some concerns with the company or software used to generate the transcripts, since there appears to have been a grievous lack of quality control and a large number of errors have made it to the released transcripts. Screenshots are attached and a list of general concerns can be found below.

As professional linguists, who variously have been or are currently employed as editors, translators, transcribers, or project managers in the language service sector (each with QA responsibilities), with over a decade of experience, we would highly recommend requesting a partial or total refund from the companies involved in generating these transcripts. As provided, the transcripts lack any form of serious quality control and may even indicate that the supplier(s) you have partnered with are fraudulent.

With the professional experience we have, we understand the difficulties that come with transcribing audio of this type. One speaker having multiple voices, crosstalk, and "unusual" turns of phrase (i.e. Pathfinder mechanics and terminology) being used pose great difficulties. However, the concerns we would like to voice are unrelated to the content of RQG, but basic issues that any professional linguist should have been able to avoid.

Many of the concerns we have can be traced to a lack of consistency, which could have been avoided by the simple creation and adherence to a style guide. Did your transcription supplier provide or request one? With a project as big as this, it would have been standard practice.

Please find a list of general concerns below, the file names of relevant screenshots have been added in brackets:

Many spelling and grammar errors, which indicate a lack of language skill (Spelling001 to 005). Professional linguists should only ever work in their native language to avoid such issues. There are official ISO guidelines regarding linguistic qualifications, which any agency of worth is aware of and regularly audited on.

Misspelling of player and character names and misattribution of lines (Spelling001 to 005). We do not know whether RQ provided a list of cast and character names to the transcription provider, but they should have realised that many unusual names are included and references are needed. They should have reached out and requested a list if it hadn't been provided. If it was provided, it was clearly not consulted.

Lack of organisation: The very first episode is mislabelled as episode 25 in the transcript (Episode1_mislabeled). Episode 25, in turn, only seems to be available in a word format, not as a pdf (this also seems to apply to other episodes, such as 203). The transcripts are not labelled in a consistent pattern, meaning that they are not sorted consecutively by episode number in the RQ Sharepoint, making browsing difficult (Filing001).

Lack of consistent speaker tagging: In most transcripts, the players are not distinguished from the characters they are playing, and the formatting is inconsistent in the episodes that do note in-character speech (Characters001 to 003). This is probably due to your transcription provider splitting the work over multiple people. This is a common and reasonable approach to spread the workload. However, the linguists should have agreed on a common system, or the central project manager should have dictated one. Lack of cast/character distinction renders the transcripts as good as unreadable.

Lack of basic QA regarding completion: Episode 183 includes internal formatting remarks of the supplier, which should have been deleted by them prior to delivery (CW001).

Content warnings: Listing of content warnings is inconsistent, if present at all, with one remark noting that content warnings were unavailable because they were not listed in the (fan-made) wiki (CW002). It is concerning that the transcription provider would refer to a fan-made, unofficial source, when RQ provides content warnings with all episodes in the episode notes. Surely, these are also available at RQ internally in a centralised document which could have been requested by the supplier.

We understand you are probably very busy creating and promoting your new shows and troubleshooting your new website, but transcripts of this quality actively harm your reputation as an accessible and inclusive company. The mantra "better than nothing" only applies to a certain extent here. Low-quality transcripts, such as these, are of no help to those who rely on them. Clear labelling of actors vs characters is needed in order to follow the podcast, and content warnings should have been included whether they are available on the fan wiki or not. Even if these transcripts are intended as first drafts, to be revised and polished at a later stage, they are at best unuseable and at worst dismissive towards those members of the fan community who are hard of hearing or have auditory processing issues.

Professionally, we recommend that you reach out to your supplier with the list of concerns and screenshots we have collected and request corrections. Whether or not you also request a (partial) refund is up to you, but we also recommend you do. If you do not trust your original supplier to take care of the required corrections accurately, it would be standard practice to request a quotation from another supplier and contact the original transcription provider with this quotation in order to bill them for the additional financial burden. Before choosing a (second) supplier and contracting them for all 200+ reworks, it would be advisable to do a small batch of transcripts first, in order for you to get a feeling for their quality, as well as allow them to make an accurate estimate of the effort involved and ask any questions that may already have come up.

In the language service industry, it is not uncommon to have to rework one's deliveries. Language is subjective and linguists are people. Mistakes happen. We understand this better than most fans. However, no professional, qualified linguist would have signed off on these transcripts with the feeling of a job well done. There are human errors, and there is a gross lack of basic quality assurance. Unfortunately, the RQG transcripts, as they are, fall into the latter category.

If you would like to get in touch, we would be more than happy to share our professional knowledge and experience regarding linguistic projects such as these, in order to help you avoid such problems in the future, for instance if and when you decide to add transcripts for side quests, specials, and bloopers. We are aware that you don’t usually work with fans and understand and respect the reasoning behind the decision, however, many linguists in the fan community are prepared to offer their own services as transcribers. You have a wide range of professionals in your fan community, and all of them come with the additional benefit of being familiar with the source material and understanding what format these transcripts should take in order to be of use.

historical record // first 24hrs with Sigma

A record of how I have become consumed by Sigma (Overwatch) in the last 24 hrs because if I’m going to return to tumblr, I’m to return to tumblr in a glorious, thirsty blaze of desperation, apparently.

Okay actually I saw him for the first time a few months ago and thought briefly to myself… “I think if I look too closely at this man, I will fall desperately in love, as I did with the last man that gave me this vibe”, and looked away during the period of time in which I could at least still think, “no, this is not Hot Old Man, this is just old man”

That SPECIFIC vibe is the same vibe I got from The Historian but at the start of that class, for me, my only thoughts [at the tender age of 20] over the course of that first week of class was: “I hope this keeps me more awake than my last attempt at music history class.” “Oh, he’s funny, strict, demanding, intelligent, and loves what he does.” “That is… actually a really nice voice.” “Oh no.”

Fun fact it’s been 7 years [I chased him through classes for 4 of those years] and I still love him, I need to send him an email, I understand he’s just finished a book.

Then somehow. I don’t know where. [it was the tumblr blog @todays-daddy-is] I caught glimpse of Sigma’s Maestro skin, and I went, “WHOOOOO IS THAT”, with the big gray hair and glasses and honkin torso and suit, musical elements swaying me quite a bit for a person who only began to love music about 6 years ago [specifically because of aforementioned Historian, as well as a few other influences including The Conductor and The Dean]

What a honkin man, anyway, come to find out, that’s a Sigma skin. My Overwatch experience is pretty minimal, I played the original game maybe a total of 3-5 different days on which I’d play several hours at a time and otherwise never touch it because I’m generally… I don’t usually like PvP at all ever, so long long before Overwatch 2, but because I had some time in the original game, I was given access to all of the heroes anyway, so I’m not sure if I would have had to unlock Sigma, but yeah that’s convenient

and suitably hunky voice. yeah.

after staring at his maestro skin for a while I realized this man’s face was incredibly familiar, actually

and yup, he has the exact facial structure as the aforementioned Historian, the jawline especially, but the age lines and glasses match too. Sigma’s normal hair also is an 85% match, even though the Maestro hair is hotter. upon realizing this, it made more sense that I fell as hard and fast as I did because of nostalgia, I haven’t seen that beautiful face in years [since COVID, really, as I graduated in the midst of that]

incidentally, I also have a LOOOONG track history of having a predilection for mad scientists so.

this man’s kind of. made for me.

too bad he’s pixels.

but at least he’s single.

A Sad but Happy but Sad Update

Hello everyone. I hope you’re all having a wonderful evening and that the full moon is shining as brightly and beautifully where you are as it is here.

This full moon is a bitter sweet one for me. After close to two years of development, Blood Moon is finished. It is time to submit it to Hosted Games. That, unfortunately, means it’s also time to take down the public demo. I have removed the game from Dashingdon and will send the files to Hosted Games, hopefully soon (there are still a few pieces of art I’m waiting for, but I don't think that will take too long).

I wish I had more to say but I’m a little lost for words right now… I suppose I’ll just say what I always say, which is thank you. This community has been absolutely incredible and I couldn’t be more grateful for all the help and support I’ve received over the last couple of years. Without this community, Blood Moon would not be the game it is today.

Thank you for playing. I hope you’ve enjoyed your time running with wolves. I couldn’t have asked for a better pack of players.

Okay... so I've been thinking... werewolf slang.

What are some words or phrases that you think werewolves would use? Here's some ideas I've had:

"Stray" - a werewolf without a pack. Eg, 'There is a stray wandering around the edge of our territory'.

"Moon mad" - a werewolf who goes totally berserk under the light of the full moon. Eg, 'Some of us just can't control anymore, especially in old age. My old man went moon mad near the end.'

"Showing fur" - to transform either fully or partially into wolf form. Eg, 'Frank had to leave quick. He got angry and started showing fur.'

"Pup" - a minor insult typically coming from an older werewolf and directed at a younger one. Eg, 'Back up a step, pup. You're out of line'.

"Cub" - a werewolf child. Similar to the human word 'kid'. Eg, "Who's going to pick the cubs up from school?"

Feel free to add your own! I want this post to turn into a werewolf urban dictionary.

Service Merge: IMPORTANT TIME SENSTIVE INFORMATION

Effective 5/15/23 the service codes in Therap changed from proprietary DIDD service codes to standard HCPCS codes and modifiers. The Therap support email box will be monitored for Service Support related issues. Please indicate that this is a service merge issue and send to [email protected].

Changes coming to the Service Supports Section of the PCSP in Therap:

Please read the below, which contains updated information from last week’s edition.

DIDD consulted internally with Quality Management regarding the Risk Issues Identification Tool (RIIT) and Risk Analysis and Planning Tool (RAPT) forms and confirm the Risk Section of the Therap PCSP is sufficient for quality review standards. ISC/CMs will continue to work with the person’s Circle of Support and providers to ensure all identified risks are discussed during the planning process and documented in the Risk Section of the Therap PCSP.

 Here is what you need to do today: 

Effective immediately, ISC/CMs may begin “breaking up” service requests in Therap so service dates for each service do not cross the fiscal or calendar year. ISC/CMs must break existing and future services so the service dates end at the end of and fiscal year (6/30/2023) AND the calendar year (12/31/2023) and calculate the units and totals between each break.

Not only will the service dates need to break, ISCs/CMs will need to modify the number of units to correspond to the two breaks.  Please work with the Individual’s circle of support and providers to determine the units that are needed for each section break. An Excel worksheet is available to help you with splitting units by dates.  When the units are split in Therap, the ISC/CM will need to use the calculate option on the Service to verify the cost is calculated correctly. 

 Guidance for calculating units for SLIs split by calendar and fiscal year document has been updated with examples.

Leaving Units Blank- With the change in Therap to break on Fiscal year, calendar year, or ISP year, there comes the need to put in units in each section to be sure the individual has units for services when needed. In the Titan system, ISCs and Case Managers (CM) could leave some services blank because the Titan system would calculate the number of units based on the dates of service and number of services per month or day or week. This is not an option in Therap. ISC/CMs cannot leave the units field blank. Blank units will result in no approved units for that service. The ISC/CM should work with the provider and Circle of Support (COS) to make the ultimate decision. Some of the services that need to be discussed with the COS will include Out of State services, Respite, CP, Wraparound EMP/FB.

This watch not only accompanies you on your workout but can coach you through it, with guided activities to push you even when you don’t feel motivated. It might not have the full breadth of notifications like Apple watches, but if you’re more fixated on your workout stats, then this is most certainly the watch for you.

The Apple Watch 3 is considered the most affordable of the Apple offerings and it looks pretty similar to the Series 6 (but there are more sensors in the newer model).

It comes with a good range of band designs and has access to Fitness+, hundreds of instructor-led home workouts including HIIT sessions, yoga and spinning on your iPhone, iPad and Apple TV (but this requires an extra subscription).

As with all Apple Watches the battery life is disappointing, especially if you track your sleep and it lacks the always-on display, so you have to flick your wrist to see the time – but some people might find this less distracting.

The Vivoactive 4S is a well suited running watch for anyone who doesn’t want to spend a fortune on getting up to date statistics on their workouts, and doesn’t need a watch that’s too serious when it comes to insights on how to beat their personal best. It has a reasonable battery life of up to seven days, though this figure is likely to be a little less if you’re using the playlist setting of this watch.

The other practical features of the Vivoactive 4S is the fact that you can use Garmin Pay to pick up groceries when you’re out and about, meaning that you can go phone free on your runs and properly detach from your screen. You can track a wide variety of exercises with this watch too, and a function where you can be coached through workouts as you’re accompanied by animations, which is a nice touch.

This watch won’t blow your budget, and has a ton of nice features to help you along as you workout, as well as a user-friendly interface that won’t bother you as you exercise. If you don’t need in-depth statistics to really amp up your workouts, then this watch is a particularly good choice.

The Garmin Forerunner 235 is a great value, feature-packed running watch with excellent training insights. It monitors steps, calories burned, distance traveled and intensity minutes, and has a wrist heart rate monitor and sleep tracking. However, bear in mind it can’t measure altitude or track stairs.

The Garmin Forerunner 235 also has smart notifications, audio prompts and GPS, which we found is fairly accurate. We love the pace alerts, which are ideal for runners to keep up to date with their progress. It’s also very motivating and can help improve performance. You can customize the way you receive this info with either audio or vibrating alerts.

There are four sports modes on the Garmin Forerunner 235: run, run indoor, cycle and other. We appreciated the recovery advisor feature that predicts recovery time, as well as a heart-based assessment of the overall training impact. You can view all these features on the Garmin Connect app, which syncs all your runs. You can also share your workouts with friends via Strava.

Design-wise, it’s a fairly rugged-looking watch with a nice big display, but it weighs less than earlier Garmin watches coming in at just 42g. It has a crisp, clear screen – no touchscreen sadly – but the side buttons are super simple to use.

One of the most impressive things about the Garmin Forerunner 235 is the battery life – about 11 hours in full activity mode (using GPS with heart rate), but it doesn’t have multi-sport tracking so this watch is best suited to runners.

What to look for in the best running watches

If you’ve read through all our reviews, you’re probably raring to go and buy your running watch now, but before you part with your hard-earned money, there are a few other things to consider.

Kieran Alger from The Run Testers (opens in new tab) says it’s worth choosing a watch that allows you to track how fast your heart is beating. “Things like heart rate monitoring can help runners at every level to train at the right intensity; some watches will also offer pacing targets, and they’ll help you understand how well you’ve recovered from each run, so you know how hard or easy to go in your next session,” he explained. “Even the cheaper watches are now packed with coaching and guidance features that you can use for motivation, effort management and just to understand your body’s responses better.”

You may well have a list of ‘must-have’ features, but you’ll also probably have a budget in mind. Realistically, you may need to compromise one or the other – the highest spec’d watch is not going to be suitable if you’re looking to spend the bare minimum. However, it is amazing what you can get for your money now. Alger suggests makes like Garmin or Apple for those looking for a high-end running watch: “If you want all the bells and whistles, a long battery life — and you’ve got the budget — the Garmin Enduro or Fenix range are the best of the more rugged options. For running smartwatch fans, the Apple Watch is king, and you can buy an older generation to save money.”

If you’re looking to find a quality running watch on a budget, Kieran recommends a Garmin with a lower price tag and fewer features. “At the more affordable end, the Garmin Forerunner 55 is a great entry-level watch,” he said. “It does the basics well without overloading you with data. Next level up, the Coros Pace 2 is a fantastic all-rounder that’ll have more than enough for most runners at a very competitive price.”

It was as if the world came to a stop after the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Nothing was the same after that. Three thousand people lost their lives, and our lives as Americans changed forever, or so it has seemed.

Every single one of us is still living with the results of what 19 terrorists did on a single day 20 years ago, especially when it comes to travel by airplane. We’re all familiar with the way TSA inspections have changed air travel. There are the long lines at the security gates at airports. Unless you have TSA “precheck” or have been lucky enough to get a boarding pass that lets you pass through a special line, you have to take off your jacket, belt, and shoes for screening. You must remove your laptop and put it in a separate bin from your carry-on luggage. You cannot travel with anything that the TSA thinks might be used as a weapon, including wine bottle corkscrews, fingernail files and clippers and scissors, screwdrivers…essentially anything sharp and pointed. You can’t travel with any liquids in containers larger than 3 ounces, and you’re limited to only a few of those. You have to pass through a scanner, and if you have any kind of surgical devices in your body, you have to have your body physically patted down to be allowed on an airplane.

Beginning in May of 2023, we will have to carry “Real ID” compliant identification to get on a federally regulated airplane – in effect, every commercial flight. There will be no exceptions.

And since the onslaught of the COVID pandemic, you are required to wear a mask in the airport and on the plane.

But I have a question: with all the other requirements we have to endure, why aren’t we required to be vaccinated against COVID to travel on airplanes?

Think of it. You’re locked into the familiar aluminum tube with a hundred or more other people. You have no way of knowing if the person seated next to you or across the aisle has been recently exposed to a COVID positive person. There’s no way to “socially distance” on an airplane and move away from other people. As far as masks go, medical experts are constantly telling us that wearing a mask is “to protect others,” because even KN-95 masks can’t be relied upon to protect you.

So why doesn’t the FAA, or the Transportation Security Administration, or the Department of Homeland Security, or somebody in authority anyway, issue a requirement that we are vaccinated? If we have to give up all these other “freedoms,” like the freedom to travel with an 8-ounce container of hair conditioner or a pair of fingernail clippers, why shouldn’t we be required to give up the “freedom” of traveling without protecting ourselves and others from this deadly disease by being vaccinated?

It’s madness. Three thousand people died on 9/11. But an average of 3,000 people have died from COVID every three days since the pandemic hit in January of 2020.

More than 660,000 people have died. That is nearly 100,000 people more than the population of the state of Wyoming!

What do you think would happen if terrorists flew an airplane, or even two airplanes, filled with some sort of deadly gas and crashed into a field in Wyoming and everyone in that state was killed?

That is essentially what has happened to this country over the last 18 months. An airplane filled with a deadly virus crashed into the United States of America killing 660,000 people.

Everything changed after 9/11: we started two shooting wars and launched a so-called “war on terror”; we formed an entirely new department of our government, the Department of Homeland Security, on which we spend $50 billion a year; we began a program of torture in questioning terrorist suspects; we built a special prison in Cuba to house suspected terrorists; we instituted a program of “rendition” to grab suspected terrorists off the streets and spirit them away to special “black site” interrogation centers where they were tortured and even killed; we allowed one of our intelligence agencies to sweep up billions of our electronic communications and examine them for “terrorist contacts”; we put the aforementioned requirements on air travelers; and we spent approximately 7 trillion dollars spinning our wheels in multiple foreign countries trying to insure that “the homeland” is not hit by another terrorist attack.

All of this because 3,000 people lost their lives.

With 660,000 dead, what have we done? Why, we’ve done what we usually do these days. We started a culture war.

After President Biden announced his plans for vaccine mandates that will apply to government employees and contractors and companies with more than 100 employees, Republican governors and attorneys general across the country lined up to sue to stop these new federal mandates. Today we read that certain labor unions have expressed opposition to mandated vaccines.

And they’re not even real mandates!

You can opt out of getting a vaccination by producing a test once a week proving you are not COVID positive.

What is this madness? With 660,000 dead, why don’t we have a whole new department of the federal government, “The Department of Pandemic Prevention and Treatment” or something like it?

With 660,000 dead, why aren’t we spending $50 billion a year on COVID? Why aren’t we dedicating another $50 billion a year to prevent the next pandemic?

With 660,000 dead, what are we doing arguing over masks? With 660,000 dead, why are we arguing over vaccines mandates? In the state of Texas alone – where the culture war over this disease thrives – 9,000 people have lost their lives from COVID since February.

All but 43 of them were unvaccinated.

Since April of 2020, there have been 5 million children infected with COVID. That is about 15 percent of all cases. In the last month – August – 22.4 percent of COVID cases were among children. In the week ending August 26 alone, 204,000 children were diagnosed with this terrible, deadly disease. As of September 8, the CDC reported a total of 486 deaths among children under 18. The rate children are dying from COVID is up 110 percent between July and September.

Children, who rely on us for protection from this disease, are getting sick and dying in record numbers.

What is this madness? Why isn’t the Republican Party out there demanding that masks be mandated in schools and businesses and other closed public spaces? Why don’t Republicans support a mandatory country-wide federal program to vaccinate every human being over the age of 12?

Don’t Republican governors care that their citizens and their children are dying from this horrible disease?

We pulled together after 9/11 and agreed to subject ourselves to all kinds of new mandates and requirements. Why haven’t we pulled together since this pandemic hit and took 660,000 American lives?

We know how to keep people from getting sick and dying. We know how to keep red states from having to back up trucks to be used as mobile morgues outside hospitals. After 18 months of experience with this disease, we know what works.

What is this madness?

Camila Cabello on how her movie Cinderella is a modern day story of female empowerment

Not waiting to be saved by a prince, Kay Cannon’s Cinderella is not your ordinary fairy-tale princess, but a feisty fashion entrepreneur. Cover stars Camila Cabello and Nicholas Galitzine open up about the classic story that’s been updated with new-age ambitions

Over the years, French author Charles Perrault’s 1697 folk tale Cinderella has been adapted countless times. It was a Disney animated musical (Cinderella, 1950), Cinderella was even a fella (Cinderfella, 1960), a high school student (A Cinderella Story, 2004) and a celebration of diversity with a non-white cast (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, 1997). In Ever After (1998), which featured historical characters from the 16th and 19th centuries, Anjelica Huston was the quintessential wicked stepmother, and Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella (2015) adaptation featured Lily James as an empowered young Ella, the girl covered in cinder who loses her glass slipper at the ball and falls in love with a charming prince till they live happily ever after.

The latest adaptation, based on director Kay Cannon’s screenplay, sidesteps the clichés yet ticks the boxes of wicked stepmother and stepsisters, a charming prince (played by Nicholas Galitzine) and a lot of pop songs. However, in Cannon’s updated Cinderella, the fairy godparent is genderless (played by Billy Porter) and this Cinderella, played by singer-songwriter Camila Cabello in her movie debut, is no whimpering wallflower. She’s got dreams and ambition to become a fashion designer. Her happily ever after is not dependent on a handsome prince.

A new role model

When asked about how their version of the classic is different from previous versions, Cabello says via an email interview, “It’s a totally new telling of the story. I feel like other fairy tales have values that are old-fashioned and don’t reflect the independence and strength of women accurately. This version has definitely been updated for a 2021 audience and world. The spirit of the story is there, with the characters and some themes, but it feels much more current in its values.”

Featuring a CEO Cinderella, a diverse cast of townsfolk, a line-up of princesses from around the world (don’t miss the cameo by Japanese comedian Naomi Watanabe) and a fairy godparent whose costume merges masculine and feminine elements, here’s a classic tale upended to become a modern-day story of female empowerment. “The modern, fresh take on a well-trodden fairy tale allows us to discuss contemporary issues and themes and hopefully make this version more relatable to audiences. The modern songs are an amazing contrast to the period aesthetic that is represented in the costumes and setting. I also think the film brings more humour than we've seen in previous fairy tales, which is largely due to Kay Cannon and the array of comedic actors in our cast,” adds Galitzine.

From the trailer, it appears that this version is far more empowering for Cinderella. “Definitely, and this version of Cinderella is way more relatable to young girls and women who might be able to see something from the character’s experience in their own life,” says Cabello, who describes her Ella as “empowered and ambitious, with dreams of her own. It’s a Cinderella in which she saves herself. She doesn’t aspire to be a wife or a part of the royal family, she’s too busy working on her fashion empire.”

So does that leave Galitzine’s prince simply holding a glittery glass slipper? When asked how Prince Robert is different, if at all, from the legacy character of the charming Prince, Galitzine explains, “It is often said that the prince’s role in these fairy tales is singular: to marry the princess. But while finding love is one aspect of Prince Robert’s story, his quest for freedom is more important. He’s a man who feels trapped by his circumstance, stifled by the responsibilities of the crown and the role he is expected to play. He’s figuring himself out for a lot of the movie, and Cinderella really aids in this. Bringing a level of humanity and vulnerability to him was so important in differentiating him from other princes. I also feel we tried to make him a little edgier than princes before him through the music and costumes.”

Costume drama

The fashion-obsessed will find it hard to separate Cannon’s 2021 Cinderella from the costumes, not just because fashion is Ella’s dream profession, but it’s also her mode of expression. Working with the costume department and taking on the part of an aspiring couturier were among the highlights of Cabello’s experience on this film. “I loved my work costumes! They were so comfortable but still had Ella’s swag to them. Ellen Mirojnick and her team were so passionate and full of joy for what they were doing. They were so in love with Ella and the values she represented. In a time where women’s self-expression is so limited, she uses fashion to express herself. Even when she’s dressing for work she has accessories in her hair and puts unique details in her corsets. I think it shows how much self-expression and authenticity are important to her. Obviously, the story has romantic themes and I think that shows in the costumes. They’re very romantic, magical costumes—but designed with Ella’s character in mind. As she makes her own clothes, there were considerations about how she might have made certain decisions or designed things in a certain way. She even makes her own ball gown.”

Costume designer Mirojnick, who brought alive the world of Bridgerton with her clothes, also had the edgy Porter to work with, and she took inspiration from the monarch butterfly to create the godparent’s (named Fab G), gown with wings and custom Jimmy Choo boots.

Cabello equally loved working with Porter and all that his character represents. “His version of the Fairy Godmother is genderless. After all, magic doesn’t have a gender. Fab G guides Cinderella and helps her dreams come true…but she gets there by staying true to herself along the way,” she explains.

Of all his co-actors, from Cabello to Minnie Driver and Pierce Brosnan, British actor Galitzine was most in awe of Brosnan. “Working with Pierce Brosnan and Minnie Driver was just a dream. A bit of a pinch-yourself moment. They are icons but are so down-to-earth and giving. I was just trying to soak up as much knowledge from them as possible. Minnie is so funny, and Pierce is my James Bond. I should have asked him for some tips if I ever throw my hat in the ring for a future Bond,” says the 26-year-old, perhaps not entirely in jest. On his co-star Cabello, he adds, “I feel so lucky that Camila and I clicked straight away. Even from the chemistry test. We have a similar sense of humour and a willingness to learn, which bonded us throughout the process. To me, Camila is an old soul and carries herself with such wisdom. I love working with actors like that.”

Modern day fairy tale

The lead actors, our digital cover stars for the month, agree that it’s time to update fairy tales and align them to a 21st century audience, where girls and boys of today feel seen in popular culture. Cabello says it is about time that “little girls can see themselves being represented in Aladdin or The Little Mermaid.” Galitzine adds, “The idea of the damsel in distress is fast becoming obsolete. I think young women want to see themselves, and indeed their hopes and dreams, represented in characters. This film does an incredible job in bringing diversity in its cast and crew, which I think is integral in the process of updating these fairy tales for a modern-day audience.”

So do either of them believe in ‘happily ever after’? Galitzine says he believes that relationships take work: “Nothing is ever perfect. You have to make compromises and sacrifices, and it won’t always be as glamorous as the fairy tales may suggest. But I do believe there is a person out there who will love you for all your imperfections and messiness. And those kinds of people will be with you for a very long time.”

Cabello, on the other hand, agrees with the film’s updated take that an individual’s happiness is not dependent on another. “I guess the idea of ‘happily ever after’ is part of the old ideals of fairy tales, where the princess is destined to be with a prince, and that’s where her happiness will come from. But I like to think we’re redefining that idea with this film, and that you can be happy in yourself and with your own ambition. That being said, I am a huge Disney fan, so I will always be happy that I got the chance to be in this movie.”

The Radio Station - Chapter Six - Why Can’t We Be Friends?

Eventually, she saw it all unfold in the headlines. The lies. The heroin. The trip to rehab. It was devastating to discover the root cause of Matty’s behaviour in such a disconnected way from how she might’ve expected to discover it a few years ago. A part of her wanted to reach out, to check in and see if he was doing all right, offer to help, but she suspected after their last two interactions that maybe she was better off just leaving it. However, in contrast to the sinking feeling from knowing he had been going through such turmoil, it was incredibly uplifting to see him getting back on his feet. For him to be writing and releasing music again meant that he must’ve successfully made it to the other side. Whenever the announcement of a new album came, she waited in anticipation for the email confirming that he’d be coming back on the show. She wasn’t entirely sure if she was excited at the thought of seeing him again, or absolutely dreading the prospect of things still being uncomfortable between them - her emotions seemed to regularly flip flop between the two. It was awfully close to the album release date when she finally got the confirmation from her boss; she had begun to suspect maybe he didn’t want to come back on the show after how they’d left things. He’d have every right to resent her after how she’d treated him.

She was knocked out of her thoughts whenever she heard a soft knock at the door, turning in her chair to see Matty standing outside with a sheepish smile, having arrived early. His hair was cropped quite a bit shorter than she’d seen it before but he was still sporting his natural curls. He was wearing some puffy yellow coat over a plain shirt, and stock standard worn out blue jeans. It was probably the most… average, that she’d ever seen him look (not that average was ever a truly fitting word to describe Matthew Healy). She waited for him to push the door open and come in, but he seemed to be waiting for her to let him in. As she stood up and opened the door, and he gingerly made his way inside and loitered next to her desk for a minute, she was suddenly vividly reminded of the first time she’d met him. All she could see was the nervous twenty-three-year-old that she’d met six years ago, who was scared shitless about his first proper radio interview. The nostalgia hit like a freight train, and before she could give it a second thought she grabbed him in a tight hug.

He hugged her back, pressing his face into her shoulder as he let out the breath he had been holding. “I’m sorry…” She said quietly after a moment.

He gave an incredulous laugh at that, “You’re sorry? For what?” He asked. “I was the dickhead.”

“I just…” This hadn’t really been the way she expected herself to instantly react, nor had she thought of anything to say in this situation. Her mouth was running dry trying to come up with the right words to explain what she was feeling. “I wasn’t exactly a good friend.”

“I think we were both a bit guilty of that.” He chuckled as he ran a hand through his hair, taking a step back.

“I should’ve tried harder.” She tried to explain, frowning at herself as she floundered for the right sentiment.

“It’s fine, truly.” He reassured her. “I wouldn’t have told you what was happening, anyway. Nobody knew.” He added with a shrug.

They took their seats opposite the desk, both feeling slightly relieved but well aware there was still tension surrounding them. “Uh, is there anything you want me to avoid asking about?” She asked eventually, busying herself with checking the text line to avoid looking directly at him.

“No.” Matty replied instantly. “I’d prefer you ask what you want to rather than censor yourself for my benefit. I won’t answer it if it’s too much.” He clarified. “Thanks for checking, though.”

“Are you…” She hesitated, unsure of the boundaries of their friendship now and how much she should be asking for her own curiosity. “Are you all right now?” She asked as she looked across to him.

He cracked a small smile, “Considerably better. Probably not all the way there yet, though. It’s hard with my girlfriend back at home for the moment, but I’m managing. Keeping busy with other stuff to stay occupied.” He answered truthfully. She nodded in understanding. “And you? It’s been at least three years since we’ve had a proper conversation.” The realisation of how long it had actually been stung slightly, but she ignored that feeling and instead focused on the fact that he seemed to genuinely want to know how she’d been.

“Good.” She grinned. “Doing well on the morning slot now that it’s been a few years.”

“You’ve been making a bit of a reputation for yourself over here, I hear your name get kicked around a bit when I’m at home. It’s nice to see you getting proper recognition for your efforts.” She tried her best not to blush at the subtle compliment.

Thankfully she didn’t have too long to dwell on his kind words and any connotations behind them before the interview started. The nervous butterflies sat at the pit of her stomach as she switched the live audio and video feeds over, lying in wait in case the interview still felt as awkward and forced as the last two.

“Matty, great to have you back.” She spoke, clearing her throat slightly.

“Great to be back after so long.” He said cheerfully.

“The 1975 release their new record in six days, A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships-”

“Only six days?” He muttered to himself in slight disbelief.

“We’ve only got a relatively short interview today, because after this you are heading straight into the live lounge to play a few tracks for us.” He made a noise of agreement. “We’ve heard five singles off it, all of which sound very different from one another in true 1975 fashion.” Matty laughed lightly at that. “And I noticed that you did the same thing with this album as what you did with I Like it When You Sleep; the first single you released was the first track on the album. Is this becoming a habit for you guys?” She asked.

“Probably not a habit.” He started, letting out a huff. “It just felt like the most natural thing to do. Whether it felt like a primary statement or not, I’m not sure. We’d already made an album by that point, we hadn’t made a group of singles. I hadn’t been thinking ‘oh, how do we butter them up?’ Just thought… this is the first song on the record. Put it out.” He shrugged.

“Do you think this is your strongest record so far?”

“A hundred percent.” He answered instantly.

“I’ve heard people comparing it to OK Computer. Saying that it’s a similar thing for the millennial generation.” She prompted.

He let out a groan, “I try not to think much about it.” He admitted. “I mean, what do I say? It’s so humbling and amazing, but strange also, because… the only realisation that I really came to, about the record – I think the reference to OK Computer is maybe it’s kind of, the narrative is incredibly twinned with how we communicate and the internet and all those kind of things. Which is obviously OK Computer in a nutshell. My favourite records are about life.” He said, clenching his fist for emphasis and knocking the microphone lightly. “It’s maybe a bit of a big thing to say, but I was just writing a record about relationships. Well… I wasn’t even doing that; I was just writing a record. And it turns out if you’re trying to write an honest record about relationships and how they’re mediated in the modern day, you’re kind of by proxy writing about the internet.” He explained. Things already felt more natural than what they had of late. Matty felt more open and responsive, which instantly put her mind at ease.

“One of the other singles that we’ve heard from the album is Love It If We Made It, which is…” She tried to pick her words carefully to best capture her thoughts on the song succinctly, “a pretty powerful song to say the least.”

Matty nodded enthusiastically before answering, “The thing with Love It If We Made It… it was very, very difficult to write. It’s a list of information. The idea stemmed from the fact that over a year we collected tabloid newspapers every day to make the lyrics. Unfortunately, when we got to trying that, it was too slapstick. The song was hard to get right. It needed to be as objective and as fair and as anti… ‘watch out sheeple’ as possible. And that’s hard to do.”

“It seems you guys did a good job with it in the end. It’s been resonating well with our listeners.”

“Thanks.” Matty grinned proudly.

“It’s Not Living If It’s Not With You has also had quite the response.” She added, hoping he’d have a bit to say about that, and that maybe it could work as a segue to the questions blowing up her screen in her peripheral vision.

“It’s… I don’t know…” He sighed, staring blankly at the wall behind her as he tried to formulate an answer. “The way I always explain it, it’s like it’s a song that sounds poppy but it’s about something serious. Which, okay, that’s straight up 1975. And that’s because the feeling that I get from music, narratively or musically, can kind of be the same thing. You know like being nervous or being like, er, anxious for a date, physically could be the same feeling as the fear of heights if you get rid of all the intellect. Emotionally, you get the same thing. I’ve always been like, I get this feeling when I read the lyrics of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen but I get the same carnal feeling when I hear the music to Girls Just Want to Have Fun. So… the synthesis of those ideas has just been the most obvious thing in the world for me, you know what I mean?” He looked across to her for confirmation. “I think that idea really sums up The 1975. If you’re a big fan of The 1975, that’s the most 1975-iest song on the record.”

She had hoped he would jump straight into the lyrical content of the song, but clearly she would need to segue into it herself. “That totally makes sense.” She agreed. “There’s been a bit of a debate about the subject matter of It’s Not Living.” She said, giving him a cautious glance. He’d said not to worry about asking whatever she wanted to, but that didn’t stop her from feeling like she was delving too deep into his private life.

He hummed thoughtfully. “I’m pretty sure most of the fans know what it’s about.” He said with a dry laugh. “I’ve not like… done some big reveal of my relationship with drugs over the past couple of years. I think that because…” He stared down at the desk with a frown, “I used to have nightmares about being exposed. Because remember, my whole game has always been that ‘do I know that you know that I think that I’m a rock star?’ that’s always been my whole thing.” He said with a pointed look. “So, the idea though, of actually being known for being a junkie and doing those kinds of things, used to terrify me. Because then I’m a cliché. I lose all of my irony and lose all of my funniness because I’m an actual cliché. So, I think even when I’m talking about it on this record, I’m still going ‘Danny ran into some complications-’ it’s like I’m using characters. It’s a bit like somebody going ‘I’ve got this mate, right, and he’s got a bit of this weird rash-’ “ He chuckled. “Like ‘yeah, all right, well tell your mate-’ it’s like we know who you’re talking about. I think the idea that I’m still trying to hide and remove myself from it is part of the gag. But then the chorus is brutally honest. It’s difficult to write a song like that. It’s hard to despise the idea of fetishizing or romanticising drug use as a behaviour but then only having my truth. Like I don’t have anything else, I don’t have anywhere else to talk about it. There is a hopelessness to drug addiction. You don’t keep doing it because it’s cool, you keep doing it because you feel like there’s no life without it.” His expression seemed to become quite sombre at that before he continued his train of thought. “And to express that… it wasn’t like a relief for me. The music is a catharsis for me, but it wasn’t like I needed to get that out. Unfortunately, I’m only my set of experiences, and they’re pretty limited as somebody who’s been on the road for four years trying to mediate his life through drug addiction, y’know? So yeah… it’s difficult to walk that line. Um… But I just had to make sure that… like with most of my work, any discussion of my behaviour is normally with a profound distaste. And kids are smart, man.”

She hadn’t really expected him to be so open about it so readily. “What started it?” She asked instinctually, almost forgetting for a moment that she was at work and meant to be providing entertainment. “If you don’t mind me asking.” She added as an afterthought.

He waved a hand dismissively at her worry. “I’d be on stage, and there would be however many thousands of people. And I’m genuinely trying to connect with people, you know? And then it’s done. Go back to the hotel room. Go to sleep. Like… what?” He answered with a frustrated huff. “I was trying to change culture in my head ten minutes ago and now I’ve gotta go to sleep? I used drugs to go to sleep primarily. I’ve never had a good relationship with sleep, anyway… I’ve always been jealous of people they’ll tell me about a dream and they’ll kind of like explain this little kind of film that they’ve been that has a dynamic of emotions and it was up and it was down and my dreams are just like terror. Just fear. I’ve never had that many good dreams. And drugs stop you dreaming. But then obviously… you have solutions to get rid of that post-show buzz. Didn’t really get me anywhere. Spoilt it, as well. Did way too much. Did loads of it.” He admitted. “So, I can’t do anymore of it… when I’m older.” He laughed.

“So, you became reliant on that as a comedown?” She questioned.

“It was always gonna happen with me with opiates.” He said bluntly. “I only say this in case people relate to it, but like, when I was younger, I kind of used to dream about being sedated. And unfortunately, sex, drugs, other things, religion, I’ve loved all these things in my life but they’ve never just-” He clicked his fingers, “turned it off. And unfortunately, when I tried those drugs, I – temporarily, for a moment – had that. And I was like, right, this is gonna help. And erm,” He picked at his nail anxiously. “It just takes your shine off, slows you down. Makes you lie, which is a nightmare for somebody who is so Mr Tell The Truth.”

“The lies are what got you caught?”

He made a noise of contemplation. “The problem is… I’m very, very lucky, is what I am. And I have an infrastructure around me of like… we’ve been a band since we were fourteen, I’m twenty-nine, right.” He said with a pointed look in her direction. “We’re like brothers, we love each other. I have amazing opportunities like this,” He gestured around the studio, “I have my health, I have all these things. There’s not a lot of people around me who allow stuff like… hard drug use. And that’s really annoying when you’re a drug addict. But it also makes you reflect, you know what I mean? Because you just end up lying, and being a version of yourself that- but that’s part of the sickness. You incentivise things weirdly.” He explained with a shrug.

“And the rehab centre you went to was in Barbados?” She asked. He nodded in response. “I heard that the band paid for that?”

His expression visibly softened when she brought that up. “Yeah. I think the nice story was that uh… Obviously, I’m in a fortunate place in my career that - obviously I have to think about those kind of financial things - but before I went I was kind of thinking ‘I’ll sort that out when I’m out there’ and then I remember saying to Jamie ‘oh-‘ and he was like ‘aw nah, nah, it’s all sorted’ and I was like ‘Oh, how much did it - what was it?’ and he was like ‘oh, well we just did it out the band’ and I was like ‘oh really??’ “ He seemed visibly touched by this story, even retelling it now.

“That was pretty amazing of them to do.”

“Yeah… Yeah, it was.” He muttered, still clearly caught up in his own thoughts. “And you know what, if you want a band to last forever, share.” He added simply.

“And this place you went to, supposedly they do a bunch of stuff with horses?” She asked in confusion. When she had heard this information, she was almost certain she had gotten her wires crossed, but Matty was already confirming what she had said.

“Equine therapy, yeah! It was, basically…” He started trying to explain, before cracking a smile and looking across to her. “In reality what it was, for the first two or three days was me stood in a field rolling my eyes next to a horse.” He said with a laugh. “That’s what it was really. This guy put me in a field with a horse and was like ‘talk to the horse’ so I’m like” He gave a sarcastic look, “ ‘…all right?’ So, he leaves me alone and I’m like ‘hey man’ and the horse obviously didn’t say anything.” She couldn’t help but laugh at the image. “And then he put me in the round pen, right. He put me in this pen which was just round – was a good explanation of it.” He reprimanded himself with a snort. “And I stood in the middle, and basically he said ‘I want you to walk towards the horse. It’s gonna send the horse around in a loop, and I want you to assert your position. You’re not going to get the horse. You’re just telling the horse that this is where you’re going’. All this stuff. So, I do it. And he goes ‘you’ll notice three things, at one point the horse will dip its head, then it’ll bow its ear to you, then it’ll start biting its lips. Once it’s done these three things, I want you to turn your back and drop the rope.’ So, I’m like right, lips, thing, do this, yep. And the horse is running, the horse is running, I watched for these three cues, and I dropped the rope and I turned round. The horse stopped dead.” He clapped his hands together for emphasis, staring at her seriously.

“I swear to you, it was one of the most profound moments of my life. The horse stopped dead, came over to me and stood behind me – and this is a horse that for three days had mugged me off. And I was… stood there with this horse, that now… wanted to be with me?” He seemed entirely perplexed by this. “Then when I walked it wouldn’t cross my feet,” He gestured to his feet as he said this, knocking his microphone in the process. “Sorry, I keep hitting the microphone. Way too gesticulated today. Erm, when I went into the field and hung out with it, it wanted to be with me. And then I stood there and was like ‘Ah… Right…’ Then all of these profound things… It was so…” He tried his best to find the words. “It ate everything it needed to eat, and didn’t complain about it, and didn’t eat too much of it, and ate the right stuff. It had the ability to destroy anything it wanted, but the desire to hurt nothing. It was physically perfect and strong. It was forgiving with its time with me. And it was kind of compassionate in a way, ‘cause he’s a horse, he doesn’t want me there, he just wants to be a horse. But he let me be there.” It was abundantly clear how much of an impact this experience had on Matty. He spoke about it so passionately that it was hard not to feel moved by what he was saying. “I found myself envying all of these human qualities in a horse. And I think that was the point of it…” He said with a look of finality. “At least, I hope that was the point of it. Otherwise I’ve screwed it up and learned nothing.” He laughed loudly. “But it worked for me.”

“How are you finding it? Being off the drugs?” She asked, leaning back in her seat after having been leant forward in interest for the last few minutes as he told his story.

He pulled a face as he tried to answer that in a manner suitable for a mass radio audience. “I mean… I wouldn’t say I’m this ‘beacon of sobriety’ “ He punctuated that with air quotes, “that’s kind of, telling you how it is to be an ex addict. I don’t know.” He answered sincerely. “I’ve not gone long enough. I’m not gonna start talking about ‘I haven’t done drugs in five years - ten years’ it was only a few months ago. I was still doing loads of them.” He said as he scratched at his neck.

“Is it harder now without them?”

“I don’t sleep as good as I used to with it, but I’m getting by.” He replied with a nod. “I’m all right with sleeping now. The band and my girlfriend have been really supportive and helpful. I’m doing all the things now that I used to do when I took drugs all the time. So, I’ve just made a record without doing it all the time,” He ticked that off on a finger, “so that was an experience, that was a challenge. I’ve now started touring without doing it all the time,” He ticked that off as well, “that’s an experience, that’s a challenge. I’m now about to start getting on planes all the time and touring internationally,” He added that to the list, “that’ll be a challenge. But you’ve just gotta take it day by day as the cliché says, or you’ll freak yourself out.”

“You talk about drugs pretty freely in your music, but you don’t really speak about it in interviews, was that to try and stay… disconnected from it to some degree? Did you think it was going to get as bad as it did?” She asked. She had entirely tuned out of the fan questions being sent in now, asking these questions almost purely from her own curiosity to know what had happened to the Matty she knew.

“No, no, no… I didn’t. I mean, I think the thing that I think I always have confidence in is that because I’ve – regardless of if it’s drugs or relationships - the main thing I’ve done with The 1975 is spoken about myself with kind of quite a profound disdain.” He answered. “There’s not really been a celebration of the behaviour. I think that if I was ever romanticising or fetishizing the use of drugs, I think I’d catch myself doing it. And if I ever have done that in a lyric, it will be immediately met with a lyric that shows that one up to be ironic or flawed.” He elaborated. That made sense. Most of his songs did reflect that attitude. “I’ve just had to be honest. Religion allows you to kind of give something away, sex, exactly the same thing. They’re just ways of giving up some kind of responsibility in the moment. But by that point I’d done ‘em all!” He grinned, still trying to keep the mood light despite the heavy topic. “Drugs was the only one left.”

She stared at him for a moment, just taking in all of the information he’d given her in such a short timeframe. It was a lot to process all at once, but it made a lot of the pieces click into place and answered a lot of questions that had kept her up at night when they had lost contact. Eventually she clocked back into reality, seeing that he was watching her just as intently as she had been watching him while he had divulged some of the most intimate aspects of his life.

“So, to a lighter note-” She segued.

“It’s fine, I don’t mind talking about it.” He said with a chuckle.

She smiled back at him, “I’m sure our listeners have enjoyed hearing it all in such great detail. But, there are some other big events that have been happening in your life as well that we haven’t brought up.” She said.

“Oh?”

“The 1975 will be headlining Reading and Leeds next year.”

“Yes!” He beamed. “It’s our first big headline festival. It gets me proper emotional. We didn’t just go as kids, after I got to thirteen, Christmas took a back seat and the date on my calendar was Reading and Leeds. I went one year with a tenner and no tent. I mean, I’ve had some moments there. It’ll definitely be a very humble show. All of this ego and confidence here will be gone.” He scoffed, “ ‘Honestly guys, thanks so much for coming.’ ” He said in a feigned blubbering emotional voice, before giggling at himself. “But like, we’ve just become a really good band in my opinion. I think we could headline Reading and Leeds tomorrow if you asked us to.”

“Are you particularly excited to have content off the new album to perform there?”

“Definitely. There are some songs on there that will be added into the festival setlists. It was about creating a distillation of what preceded it. Everything needed to be better, more extreme. Poppy bits poppier, heavy bits heavier, honest bits more honest.” He explained with a nod. “You can look at your work and be like ‘what did I do there that someone likes’ or ‘let’s try and do that piano thing’. Me, when I’m like, really personal, really honest, that’s when I get the best reaction. So, I just tend to do that. Like what’s gonna make me, y’know-“ He started pretending to tear up for emphasis.

“And you guys are already working on the next album, Notes on a Conditional Form? This one’s not even out yet!”

He just laughed. “We went away and what happened was, we finished A Brief Inquiry, kind of had a week off and then we started with Notes. I’m just letting it happen.” He shrugged. “I’m letting it happen in the next six months. It’ll be before…” He seemed to be doing some calculations in his head. “August. It has to be in time for Reading and Leeds.” He added decisively.

Glancing down at the clock on the screen next to her, she could see that they had in fact gone over time. “Well, as always Matty, it’s been lovely having you on the show, but I think we have to wrap it up so you can scoot over to the live lounge and get yourself set up.” She said with a small sigh, disappointed that the interview had to end after how well it had been going. Matty had felt entirely captivating as he spoke today, clearly on his game.

“God, this’ll be the first time we’ve played together in… ages.” He said as he pulled a hand through his hair and leaned back into his chair. “And we’ve not played these songs live yet, either. This will be the debut.”

“Incredibly exciting.” She nodded. “So, I’ll let you go. Tune in folks in half an hour, The 1975 will be playing a short set for us of songs from their new album, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, in the live lounge.” She spoke into the microphone, before rounding out the interview.

Matty didn’t move from his chair across from her as she switched the camera feed off and switched over to the next round of tracks.

“Are you coming?” He asked as soon as she took her headset off. “To the live lounge?” He clarified.

Her shift was meant to end in just over twenty minutes, and they started in thirty. She could probably finish up quickly enough to make it down there in time. “Yeah, I can do that.” She said with a nod.

He grinned eagerly, “It’ll be wicked to have you there for it.”

“It’s probably about time I saw you guys play.” She laughed as he stood up.

“I’ll see you shortly.” He said over his shoulder as he made his way out of the studio.

By the time she made her way down to the live lounge quite a crowd had already formed. Her handover between shifts had been fairly rushed in an attempt to get out of there quickly, but obviously The 1975 knew how to draw an audience. She managed to squeeze her way through a few crew members to get a decent enough viewing point. Whenever she caught Matty’s gaze, he waved at her excitedly. She waved back, suddenly feeling a bout of nerves at the thought of finally watching him in action. Once the cameras were set up and all of the equipment had done one final round of checks, they launched into quite a boppy first song. She recognised this instantly as Tootime, as it had been her favourite of the singles that were released. He sounded a bit rusty and raw, which thankfully he could cover with the filter over his voice, but his enthusiasm to be performing again was unmistakable. The looks he was throwing to his band were nothing short of ecstatic, and despite being out of practice they played the song flawlessly. They finished up the first song, and he shrugged off his yellow jacket as they changed their gear over for the next two. Their little live set was only three songs long in the end, but they felt It’s Not Living and Sincerity Is Scary were excellent choices to best get across the vibe of the new album. After seeing what they could do in a tiny room with minimal fanfare, she was suddenly kicking herself for never getting out to one of their live shows.

When they had wrapped up the set, Matty started packing away his gear before seeing her starting to leave. He quickly dropped what he was doing and called out to her to wait up. She turned to face him, as he suddenly realised that he hadn’t worked out what to actually say. “Look, I’m sorry about… how I’ve been lately.” He eventually settled on.

“It’s okay, you were going through a rough time.” She reassured him.

“I was,” He nodded, “but it’s not really an excuse.” He added with a sigh. “Can I take you out to lunch after this? To apologise properly.” He asked with a hopeful look.

“You don’t have to-” She started, before he interrupted.

“I know I don’t have to - I want to.” He corrected. She considered this offer for a moment. “Please?”

“Sure.” She nodded, trying to conceal her smile. “That’d be nice.”

She waited patiently as he packed up his gear, feeling slightly awkward for loitering around a studio that wasn’t hers while she watched everyone else clear out. Once everything seemed fairly put away, he exchanged a quiet word with the band and walked over to where she was standing.

“Any preferences for where we eat? It’s your apology lunch, after all.” He said as he slipped his jacket back on.

She grimaced at his choice of words. “Don’t say it like that.”

“Why?” He laughed.

“It makes me feel worse than I already do.”

“Suppose we’ll just feel bad together, then.” He said as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and ushered her back out of the building. She couldn’t deny, it felt nice to be seeing Matty act more like he had when they’d first met. Whether that was because she enjoyed the attention or because it was nice to see her friend feeling more himself was up for debate.

Due to neither of them being the one to want to make the call about where to eat, for fear of the other not enjoying it, they ended up going to the only place that served food within their direct eyeline – a bakery. It made her feel less like she was taking advantage too for him to only have to pay for pastries and coffee, not a proper fancy meal with drinks. They caught each other up on the fine points of their lives that they’d missed out on hearing over the last few years: highlights in careers, people who’d come and gone, other artists they’d met that had proved to be noteworthy (for good reasons and bad). It was incredibly reassuring for the both of them to know that conversation still flowed easily enough between them when they weren’t actively disliking each other.

“Sorry if the interview was a bit… too personal. We didn’t really talk about the record all that much, in the end.” She said, thinking back to how long they’d spent discussing his drug habits rather than his impending album release.

“Stop apologising.” He said around a mouthful of food. “I’m the one who’s supposed to be saying sorry. And I’m sure the fans would’ve liked it.” He shrugged.

“Yeah, but I don’t want to force stuff out of you for the sake of entertainment.”

“Like I said, I wouldn’t have answered if I didn’t want to.” He reminded her.

He waited a beat, composing what he had originally wanted to say today before clearing his throat. “I really am sorry, you know. For how I left things.” He said as he stared down into his mug of tea.

“It’s genuinely okay, Matty.” She reassured him. “I wasn’t really any better.” She added under her breath.

“I was just a bit oblivious and hopeful when I fucked stuff up initially. I wanted to act like I hadn’t dropped off your radar for two years.” He admitted as he scratched at the side of his head. “If I’m honest, I was reaching out to get some support from an old mate in a time when I felt pretty overwhelmed by everything that was happening. But I went about it in all the wrong ways and just made it a whole lot worse.” He clarified with a dry laugh. As if she hadn’t already felt bad enough, now he tells her that she’d shut him out when he had been trying to ask for help? The guilt increased tenfold.

“Sorry.” She said. He was about to tell her off again for apologising, but she cut him off. “I was already pretty shitty that I hadn’t seen you in so long, so I was pretty quick to want to end that interaction when things started getting… difficult.” She explained.

“Guess you live and learn, huh?” He said with a small smile. “At least we’re still mates now.” Hearing him say that helped ease a bit of her worry that she’d done as much to fuck things up as he had. At least now that it was all out in the open, they could move past it.

“Yeah.” She concurred, returning his smile. They finished up the pastries that Matty had bought before stepping out of the bakery. Both of them felt like a weight had been lifted now that they knew they hadn’t screwed stuff up for good between them. Having each said their piece, they were pretty confident that they could give friendship another shot.

“It was great to see you.” He said as he pulled her in for a hug tight enough that it almost made her lose her breath.

“Next time we’ll have to make sure it’s not so long.” She said as he moved back from the hug.

“We’ll keep in touch.” He agreed with a nod. “And I mean it this time.”

Rolling over promptly at 7:00am, Aubrey felt the brain floating in her head follow her body in a delay as she winced at the sun peaking through the blinds. As she unfolded herself from her covers, she saw her legs tangled up in her fleece pajamas – Got my PJs on last night… score. She belabored for a moment, noticing the residue mascara dried on her hands and sheets. It wasn’t rare that she shed some tears before bed. Sometimes, she watches videos of exploited communities totally sober on a Wednesday night before bed and just cries it out, and other nights, she lets the tears fall as she silently wishes someone else was in the other room waiting for her, or on the other line. When she was a kid, she could just crawl into the endless hallway of rooms with her siblings – or hope that her angsty musings alone in her bed were enough to trigger a cautious tap-tap-tap on the door. Instead, here she was: halfway to 28, alone in a studio apartment in Brooklyn, and still as emotional as ever.

Her phone buzzed and she jumped like she was tased. Every morning, there’s a blissful ignorance that exists for about 20 minutes. Her mind wandered all day. At work, she had no assignments, so she left early and told them that she just had to go check in on her nieces and nephews. “Post-partum’s a bitch,” she asseverated to her supervisor before the elevator doors closed. One day, karma would catch up to her – and perhaps that day was today after all.

Aubrey has been a script writer for two and a half years, but while she sat down to gather her thoughts about the night she was about to experience, she completely fell short. Perhaps things didn’t feel real yet. This whole time, except for 30 seconds in a crowded green room, he hadn’t felt real. Like he was just out of reach or a figment of her imagination like he used to be the first two years after he left. So now, when the clock was winding down and she was about to be with him again, she couldn’t process how she was feeling.

The last decade, she’d gone through different emotions for this moment – the first was a total relinquishment of any resentment and a fall-back-into-love dream. She used to tell her therapist, “If he came back right now, I wouldn’t even think to talk about what happened. I’d forgive him in a heartbeat,” which, for obvious reasons, was met with extremely concerned glances and registering for a couple extra sessions. Then, the peace phase: “I don’t really think about it that much. I think I’m all good!” she said, during the busiest period of her life. That treaty came to a crumble when she met a Harper at the coffee shop – a 94 year old man who would ask her for company. One day, she broke down into tears in front of him and they never met for coffee again. Then, perhaps her siblings’ favorite yet most feared, her anger phase. Sometimes, she’d walk into the house for Thanksgiving as a grown woman – 23, 24 years old – sit down at the dinner table, and exclaim, “Aren’t men just the most disgusting creatures to ever walk the earth?” Usually, she was met with commiserations and apologies from the phallic members of her family. One time, she did have to apologize – “Chandler, have you ever considered just how fucking inconsiderate it is that you kept your blonde hair all this time?” The next morning, she apologized thoroughly, and of course, blamed it on her alter ego: Brandy.

But, eventually she stopped going through the motions. Instead, the misery and memory would come and go, like a painful deep breath in. She would excuse herself to take a breath, or become catatonic for a moment, but one day, she turned 26, looked back at her life, and decided to feel contentment. What had happened… happened, and from that day one, she became a new kind of Aubrey. A more consistent Aubrey. So here she was, getting ready to meet up with the one and only Slade again, sitting with a ripped notebook paper and pen, hoping to find what she was feeling, and walking into an abyss of harrowing solitude. All she knew was that she had one goal: stay reticent.

The trek to Huckleberry was unusual for her. Usually, she enjoyed the bus ride, but tonight, she decided to walk. Leaving 45 minutes early, Aubrey walked about 35 blocks in the hope that she would find how she was feeling, but instead, empty tears welled in her eyes and went. She listened to the way her heels clicked down the streets as she tried to convince herself everything was normal. Her phone started ringing – it was Sophia. But she hadn’t filled in Sophia in almost a week, what does she say? She let it go to voicemail, and as was pretty typical for Aubrey at this point, she’d explain herself in the morning. Instead, “I’ve read that he’s, like, a decent human being now,” played over in her head. A decent human being? In Dalton’s eyes? Did he save a burning orphanage? Part of her had hoped that he had become a sort of demagogue, that she could curse him out, he’d feel nothing, and then that would be closure. But she wasn’t surprised by Dalton. He’d always been a good guy to her. Always. Didn’t make anything easier, though – certainly didn’t help when he left.

Getting to the door, she laughed to herself at the edifice. Her friends used to joke that this place was a secret brothel – the wooden panels, a bouncer you could pay off with a wink, and the watered down vodka crans. The good thing, though, was that they got busted for having underaged kids – it’s picked up since then, got new lights, repaired the leather on the seats, and was a restaurant until 11:00pm on the weekends. So, it was a pretty safe spot.

She made her way through the tight entryway, sardine-packs of people to the bar area – finding a quick table, she sat down. What kind of a drink do you order when you’re about to meet up with your high school boyfriend? She let that color her mind for a bit before settling on nothing for now. It wasn’t a date – it was.. What it was. And it would happen how it will happen. Sitting in the booth, she tucked herself into the corner of the wall. 7:24, just on time. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, Aubrey said a quick prayer to herself and braced for the cruel unknown.

With this deployment, ISC/CMs may proceed with entering FY25 SLIs. If any SLI’s were saved with the old proprietary service code or old rate, users will need to select the proper service (new service code with HCPCS-Modifier) from the service drop down in order to see the rates properly.

Other Updates for ISC/CMs:

Leaving Units Blank- Change in guidance! Due to the feedback received on the previous guidance we've identified more efficient ways for calculating units for day services that does not involve guessing the number of units that will also ensure maximum flexibility for the individuals we support. With each method you will be allowed to enter the maximum amounts for each day service. The guidance applies to the CAC, SW and SD Waivers

Title: End of An Era

Jensen sang softly to an old country song that you honestly have never heard before that morning. Which was rare, listening to your husband sing country songs wasn’t a new for you but this song surely was. It was a peaceful morning, the snow was fresh from the night before. It was 6:30 am and the roads were slightly empty. Soft shades of blue began to bloom in the sky. It was quite magical. Your eyes landed on Jensen, whom wore a gray beanie.

The corner of his lips were subtly curved up.

“What?” Jensen asked, giving you a quick glance.

You smiled, taking in how the dim light contrasted with his facial features.

“You look happy.”

Jensen’s small smile turned into a bigger fuller grin, “I am happy.” He switched his eyes from the road again to wink at you for a second before looking back. “I haven’t driven to work with you in… months. Of course, I am happy.”

“I’ve missed this,” you said in a sigh.

He holds your hand and kissed the back of it, “Me too.”

Then he continued to sing but this song was one you knew too well.

“Baby you’re all that I need… we’re heaven.”

You sat on the hair and makeup chair and went over your lines. It’s the last day of filming, after a full week of mentally preparing yourself, you realized this wasn’t something easy to prepare for. When you decided to retire from Supernatural, one of your concerns was what would happen to Katherine. Having her killed off just wasn’t an option… Convincing the network, writers and the runner of the show not to kill Katherine Pierce wasn’t an easy task. After a lot of use of your persuasion skills, emails, calls and face to face meetings. The news of your beloved character was going to have a good ending lifted a weight off your shoulders.

“How do you feel?” Clary asked as she created loose curls on your short hair.

“About?” You looked up from the script.

“Last day filming here,” Clary looked at you through the mirror as she continued to do your hair, “last day working with everyone, last day being Katherine Pierce. How do you feel?”

You sighed at Clary, someone who has turned from just a coworker to a good friend over the years. “I-.” your voice broke a little, “I feel like I am pressing pause in a chapter of my life. Like I am just holding this skill like I am putting to bed this character… The feeling is bittersweet but it’s exciting at the same time. I am excited to be a mom full time.”

“It’s the end of an era, though,” she replied.

You bit the insides of your mouth. “It is… A great era but it’s also the beginning of a new one.”

“That is true,” she said with a smile.

“Y/N?” Jensen spoke your name as he walked into the trailer. “There you are, hey Clary, how is it going?” He glanced at her.

Clary shrugged, “Nothing much, just here doing my favorite’s hair one last time.”

“Awn,” you playfully punched her arm, “I will be back as a guest.”

You and Jensen were walking hand in hand to set when you stopped and asked him for a picture. Suddenly feeling the need to take a picture of the last moment you were going to have a fresh look at Katherine Pierce. He smiled and took out his iPhone, taking your picture in a matter of seconds.

“Let me see,” you said reaching his side.

“Are you doubting your personal photographer?” He said with a joking tone.

You chuckled, “I would never but still, I want to see.”

Jensen subtly rolled his eyes with a half-smile and showed you the picture. You nodded agreeing with him that it was a good one. It took you a couple seconds to post this in your Instagram Stories as you both continued to set where the network interviewer was waiting for you.

“Hey everyone,” you said as you walked in.

Jared was shooting with Misha in another location while the interview was going to take place in the Men Of Letters library. Bobby one of the current show runners was there also for the interview. When Bobby saw you he opened his arms and you went in for a hug. You officially began to feel like today was really a goodbye.

“I will pay you more if you stay,” Bobby told you after breaking the longing hug.

You chuckled, shaking your head slowly. “There is no amount of money changing my decision, Bob.” You teased with a smirk

Bob shook his head as well, “I tried. Can at least we have you for a guest star in the future?”

“Of course,” you told him and saw a spark light up in his eyes, “maybe in two years or three, when this show finally hits 300 episodes. Or in the show’s finale, I can put Katherine to bed again.”

He smiled, nodding, “I’ll have that.”

“Excuse me,” one of the network workers politely interrupted yours and Bob’s conversation. “We are ready to start the interview whenever you guys are.”

“I’m ready,” you said with a smile, seeing that Jensen was already seated in front of the camera and with his microphone on. You glanced at Bobby excusing yourself from the conversation and walking towards the seats and Jensen. Sitting down next to him the assistants began to plug in the microphones and doing the necessaries audio checks before the interview officially began.

“Hey guys, my name is Pepper, I will be doing today’s interview.” Pepper was a tall blonde, who wore a navy blue pantsuit. “I want to say it’s a pleasure to do this interview, even though it is a bit bittersweet. Katherine Pierce is, without doubt, an iconic character in this series. She is such a bad ass.”

It felt good listening to someone talk about Katherine and her character as good as Pepper did. Katherine was that kind of character that changed people's minds. She was always evolving for the better. Her development was something you constantly worried about and tried your best to portray on the screen and it was very satisfactory to hear that your hard work did actually pay off.

You gave Pepper the biggest smile, “Thank you, I really appreciate that.”

“Ready,” the camera guy whispered as he stood behind the camera.

“Well,” Pepper looked at Jensen and me, “let’s start, shall we?”

You fixed your posture and smiled at the camera, waiting for the questions about your departure from the show to begin.

“Jensen, how do you feel about this being Y/N’s last day on set?”

You glanced at Jensen for a second when you felt his look over you.

“It’s bitter-sweet, she is one of the best actress and persons I know,” He smiled and hold your hand. “I mean, those are some of the reasons I married her in the first place.” Jensen finished the song with a chuckle.

She nodded and looked at you, “How do you feel about today being your last day?”

“I was talking about this with the head of hair and makeup, Clary. She asked me the same question and everyone has asked me the same question lately… As Jensen said, this is a very bitter-sweet day for me and for everyone. The last couple of years in this show have been more than just working years. They are full of memories with friends that have become family.”

“It’s the end of an era,” Pepper said with a pitch of sadness in her tone.

You gave her and the camera a small smile. “It is the end of an era but… it’s also the start of a new one.”

“It is no secret that you are retiring from acting… What are your plans now that you won’t have an acting schedule to keep up with?”

“My plans are very simple, enjoy my time as a mother and as a wife,” you replied with total honesty. “I want to build new experiences with my family.”

“Are you guys planning on expanding your family?”

Jensen and I looked at each other, both smiling.

“We don’t know yet but now we will surely have more time to think about it.” You said.

“What can we expect for Katherine’s last episode in Supernatural?”

Without thinking your eyes met with Jensen’s and you both gave the camera mischief smiles. Obviously you weren’t supposed to say but both wanted to have fun while you guys can.

“Let’s just say it’s not what the fans are expecting,” you said, still smiling.

“Yeah,” Jensen spoke, “I believe everyone will be shocked once they see it.”

“Before we end… anything you want to say to the fans?”

“Thank you Supernatural Family for years and years of support. Thank you for all the love and dedication you guys have for the show. Thanks to you guys, I was able to come back and continue playing this awesome and badass character. I appreciate all of you. Goodbye,” you kissed the tip of your fingers and blew a kiss towards the camera. Giving the camera a grateful and farewell smile.

“And that’s a wrap for the interview,” Pepper said. “It was honestly a pleasure doing this, wish you and your family the best.”

It was the one you did on Jensen when you were pregnant and ended with you having a broken leg for a month. This was the first time in months that you were doing this specific move and it was like riding a bike. You didn’t know if it was the adrenaline or just how empowering it felt looking at this sequence in camera but this was definitely your favorite Katherine’s fight move.

Smiling weakly you hold the right side of his face. “I’m the one who has to say thank you. If it wasn’t for the Winchesters, I’d be lost.” With the end of your line, a hug was queued into the sequence. Jared holds you so tightly that it started to be difficult to breathe but you didn’t mind. The years of working together have turned both into more than co-workers. It turned him into family and the idea of not working as closely with each other was very sad.

“Cut!” Bob shouted but you and Jared did not separate.

“This is harder than I thought,” Jared whispered.

You sniffed, “It is…”

“Change of clothes everyone!” One of the crew shouted.

“Hey!” Shay met you as you were approaching your trailer. She was holding a white box on her hands.

You smiled opening your arms and giving her a hug.

“Please tell me those are donuts,” you said breaking the hug.

Shay chuckled, “They are.”

The two of you walked together into the trailer. A white long dress is the first thing you see.“Wow,” you sighed, “I think this one is better than my real one.”

“It’s pretty, but your real-life one was so beautiful,” Shay said as she placed her bag and a box of donuts on the top counter. “And your real life was… you know, real.”

You chuckled, grabbing a donut, “It was… but that one is still so beautiful. Would the network be mad if I accidentally keep it?”

Shay’s eyes widen for a second, “You’re planning on stealing this too?! You have two bags full of Katherine’s stuff already.”

‘Those bags the network approved,” you spoke. “This would be technically the only thing I actually steal.”

At that moment Shay was about to say something but her words got cut off by someone knocking on your trailer’s door. You and Shay glanced at the door before you reached it and opened it. The knocking was coming from Clary.

“Hey,” you smiled, “we were about to head over your trailer.”

Clary walked into your trailer, “Production just sent me an email. I have to do your hair and makeup here just in case someone sees you and spoils Kat’s grand farewell to the show.”

Your eyebrows fringed together. “This crew had worked there for more than a decade… Who will possibly spoil something at this point?”

It was bittersweet to read your lines in the script for one last time. You cried the first time you got to read the script and experience all the emotions that were written for Katherine in that last scene. It was going to be a sequence full of love and farewells.

“You’re all set, star,” Clary’s voice took you out of the clouds.

“Time to get in the dress,” Shay said from the couch.

Sliding into Katherine’s wedding dress gave you chills. It was like you were about to get married again. You knew that as an actor you need to separate your feelings from your character’s feelings but after working with the same character for so many years it was difficult not to get the feelings mixed up.

Walking out of the bedroom Clary and Shay glanced at you in awe.

“You ready to give Katherine Pierce the grand goodbye she deserves?” Shay asked.

You glanced at yourself in the mirror, reminiscing on the years that had passed. Thinking about all the sacrifices that this character put you through. “How are we going to make sure none of those curious fans or paparazzi see this huge dress?”

Trusting her word you decided to talk out of the trailer. Shay and Clary helping you with the back of the dress. You guys walked slowly towards the golfing car with Cliff on the driver’s seat. He instantly smiled at the sight of you, and you couldn’t do anything else that just smile back.

“Wow, Y/N! You look beautiful,” Cliff said.

You winked at him, with the smile on your face still. “Thanks, Cliff.”

“Jensen is going to drop on his feet,” he said turning on.

“You betcha,” Shay said in the backseat.

You chuckled, “Good.”

The drive towards the set was small and quick. You usually didn’t had Cliff drive you around but this sequence and dress couldn’t be walked on the streets. You and the crew needed to make sure it was spotless for the scene.

Once you got to set, everyone looked at you with the same look Shay and Clary gave you. Everyone was smiling and you felt like it was your own wedding all over again.

“You look stunning,” you heard Bob’s voice and turned around.

“Thanks,” you smiled, “how are we doing this?”

“Big guy is already waiting for you at the altar,” Bob said. “Bit of a dejavu he’s saying.”

You glanced down at your white dress and chuckled. “I can see why he’s feeling that way.”

“Yeah,” he chuckled, “nothing like the real deal though.”

“I am only scared of losing you,” Jensen said. The script said that after that line he would hold you closer as you both danced. It took you for a small surprise when Jensen did a soft spin, holding you off your feet. Improvising in the most beautiful way. You also knew it was a good add on to the moment since Bob did not call cut on the sequence.

Standing back, you touched Jensen’s chest. “I will always be here,” you said staring into his eyes, “till the end of times.”

The line was a queue for a passionate kiss, which you and your husband delivered. After a couple of seconds, you broke the kiss and whispered something in Jensen’s ear. With narrow eyes and a devilish smirk, you ran towards him and covered his face with the some of the pie that was left on your face. Jensen holds you by your waist and licked bits of the pie on your face. A couple of flashes from cameras were shot as you lived one of the happiest goodbyes.

Suddenly you began to cry but it was a mixture of happiness and sadness. It was such a bitter sweet moment.

“Honey?” Jensen looked at you, concerned of your crying.

You smiled trying to wipe the frosting and tears off your face.
