Judge Tatsumi: And today Ichiei, the best in the nation, will play. I truly can not wait.

Judge Kurokawa: Certainly, they have won for 5 consecutive years.

Judge Tatsumi: Exactly! That is amazing---

Judge Kurokawa: Then again, Ichiei's members are all children who aim to become professionals, so it's to be expected that they are at a completely different level.

Judge Tatsumi: You may be right about that but... Yesterday's Meiryo and Chibana's performances were perfect

Judge Tatsumi: I can't imagine what could possibly surpass that.

Judge Kurokawa: !

Judge Kurokawa: Aah, you mean that problematic school...

Judge Tatsumi: They did explain to us that the students weren't really at fault for the incident.

Judge Kurokawa: Where there is smoke, there is fire. It's detrimental to the other students as well.

Judge Kurokawa: At least we, the judges, should give a proper and fair evaluation---

Judge Agata: Are you not planning to judge them solely based on their performance?

Judge Kurokawa: Eh...?

Judge Kurokawa: --Well, I don't know if you would understand this, Agata-sensei, since you are a musician who always does new things, like collaborating with other genres and using unusual performance methods without respecting the traditions.

Ch.124 Analysis and Rambling

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR CHAPTER 124 OF KOT!

As I often do, I’ll be referencing tessenpai’s rough tl which you can find here

Felt so good to have a new chapter after last month’s break! And we have the very interesting return of Uzuki with characters I was not expecting to see him interacting with.

Firstly, damn, Tetsuki really does try to ditch Isaki immediately after he’s able. Unfortunately for him, Isaki is the type to be forcefully ‘courteous’. Isaki was so amazing in this chapter, specifically with regards to Uzuki. Firstly her anger is very justified and relatable (I still wouldn’t completely mind punching him in the face, but I get we’re past that now). I enjoy the humor of the situation as well, and Isaki could indeed take down Uzuki if she wanted to. She’s both rightfully mad and also polite, as expected both Isaki and Tetsuki respecting Chika’s decision to invite him. I cannot handle at all the little panels of 103 flashbacks though of Chika in pain. And then Isaki just invites Uzuki out to lunch with a threatening smile on her face, and like how great is that? Also adore how afraid Tetsuki is of the women in Chika’s life. He knows what’s up.

I love that Momoya is able to honestly express that he’s tired when Takezou asks, instead of brushing it off with an ‘I’m fine.’ I don’t know, this chapter just really conveyed how much more comfortable Momoya seems with the club and allowing himself to just be himself. I also forgot about Yoshinaga’s “Chikaism” though and it is beautiful as always. Takinami’s appearances lately being purely to convey how annoyed he is are still wonderful. What Keishi said about how some competitors don’t listen to their competition’s performances because they don’t want it to affect their own was interesting because it made me just think about how Tokise is definitely the type of school that benefits a lot from hearing many different people’s sound. And there’s enough value in hearing those performances to them that it’s basically the only thing that’ll keep them from practicing, I think. That and they’re such dedicated koto nerds that want to hear everything they can.

Loved seeing Momoya talk about Chibana and be a bit savage towards them. And also accepting the club’s affectionate shenanigans even if he’s not used to them yet.

Ooof, Tomoe. How does she even perform if she’s like this every time? That’s some dedication to performing, I guess. Seeing Hiro and Satowa be so encouraging though is great to see.

I am never getting over that Satowa carries around the same strawberry candies as Chika once gave her because they help calm her down. Like, she carries a whole tin of them and is sharing them when she sees someone else obviously in distress because she wants to help even if Tomoe hasn’t been the nicest to Tokise. All of it’s so sweet, and yeah, I’m gonna be thinking about those strawberry candies for a long while now. And Hiro calling Satowa out on it, my god, I just love all of that.

We see a bit of a look into Tomoe’s mindset around Tokise, but I really like what her friend said about finding out what Tokise is really like when they hear them perform. Because that’s what it’ll really come down to, the music, the performance, and how it’ll carry the heart and voice of the people playing. But for now, Chibana will just have to focus on their own performance, and considering we know nothing about their sounds, and I don’t think we’ve heard much of their strengths and weaknesses either, though I could be forgetting, I’m really interested to see how their performance goes.

Honestly poor Tetsuki, now having to deal with both Isaki and Uzuki also getting roped into everything. Isaki went into full on Aunt Mode with Uzuki, like I may not like this kid but he’s gonna eat on my watch, and I really love that type of interaction. Isaki in general and how she understands Chika’s situation with some of the people around him but is also gonna protect Chika first and foremost is beautiful to see. She’s able to see through just her anger or resentment and relate how Chika has acted to how Uzuki’s acting, and again, she doesn’t want to let that happen on her watch. That little detail of Chika not eating when he first moved into with her even kind of surprising Tetsuki was really good and also so sad. In general, just hearing about how Uzuki feels about food does remind you of just how bad of a place Uzuki is in mentally. How she pushes the food issue with Uzuki by not making it an obligation for him to eat it all, but asking him simply to order something even if he only has a bite was a really great way of doing it and shows Isaki’s compassion, again even if she doesn’t like this boy, hasn’t forgiven him, much like Chika, she’s also not gonna let him just destroy himself either.

“It takes a hell of a lot of strength to face what you’ve done and live with it. If you don’t have that kind of resolution, you don’t deserve to hear Chika and the rest’s performance.” These lines are really impactful. She’s telling Uzuki he has to face what he’s done, but it also takes a lot of strength to do that, so he better step up or he won’t be deserving of the chance Chika is giving him. While Chika still has some remaining self-worth issues when it comes to protecting himself, Isaki and those around him value him so much that they’re going to both respect his wishes and be angry and expect something of the people who have wronged him. They’re not gonna hesitate to make it clear how much protecting him is their first priority. Isaki just bridges the understanding and the knowledge Uzuki did something very wrong so well. She expects for him to step up and face it, and she knows that’s hard, but damn if he doesn’t deserve the hard process. But as Chika said in ch.111, hopefully Uzuki will come to learn with the performance what people can be to each other, what caring about someone really means, and while that may be hard in the face of his previous actions, facing it will allow him to better himself and move on, if he so chooses, if he’s strong enough to.

This also reminded me of what honestly might be one of my favorite quotes from this manga, though I have many, that Isaki said in ch.115. I don’t think I ever wrote anything about it, but this quote hit me so hard the first time I read it and still gets me with how true I feel it is

“But people change. Even when they don’t want to. They can’t stay as they were. And yet, when they do want to change, they’re unable to do so. We’re awkward creatures like that.”

Humans really are awkward like that. Much like in ch.115 with Isaki calling Chika’s dad, she has handled both him and Uzuki so, so beautifully. She is fully respecting Chika’s wishes while also letting these people in his life who have wronged him know where he’s at and that really they should be concerned with what they’ll do with the chance of listening to Chika, because Chika is living his own life. It’s up to Uzuki and Chika’s dad alike if they want to be any part of that or listen to what his music has to say, but they’re also sure as hell not gonna ruin that for Chika ever again. I don’t really know how much this specific quote even relates to ch.124, I just wanted to talk about it because I think it’s such a well-stated point. Sometimes we change when we don’t want that, and other times we can’t seem to change no matter how much we might want to, but it’s just a truth all of us sometimes have to face. The attitude both Chika and Isaki are taking on the subject, and that it seems Uzuki is trying to pick up as well, is that all that anyone can do now is move forward though the past will never change and never disappear, but there is still growth and peace to be found if people are open to working on it. Here’s hoping that Uzuki both does want to change and will be able to do so.

Anyway, going back to ch.124, it was hilariously predictable how everyone ended up staying to hear the rest of the performances despite their exhaustion. Takinami expecting it was amazing, and while he’s exasperated with it I love how happy Akira is about it. Also Yoshinaga just staring intently, sparkles included, at Momoya until he wordlessly gives in to staying was so damn cute.

Anyway, I loved this chapter so much, pretty much as always, but I never get any less appreciative of how great every chapter that comes out is. I am very much in need of a reread of this entire manga, so hopefully what I was saying still made sense. As always, feel free to share your thoughts on the chapter as well!

On-going Mangas I am Currently Into

Here are some of the mangas I am currently into. Most of them are yet to be completed. Some of them I ever doubt I will read the ending in this lifetime (lol, looking at you, Skip Beat!)

1. Skip Beat!

Kyoko Mogami, enraged after being used and abused by a childhood friend who dreams of becoming a famous singer, decides to get her revenge by joining showbiz and becoming more famous than him. In the business of entertainment, Kyoko discovers, instead, her true self.

2. Akatsuki no Yona

Yona, the sole princess of the kingdom of Kouka, has it all until the night when a betrayal drove her away from her palace. Protected by her bodyguard, Hak, they roam Kouka to find a way to protect the kingdom and its people.

3. Akagami no Shirayukihime

Shirayuki has a unique red hair, which caught the eye of the foolish Prince Raj. To reject his advances, Shirayuki cuts her hair and runs away to the neighboring country where she meets Zen who helps her against Raj. Deciding to take her destiny into her hands, Shirayuki goes to Zen’s kingdom to forge a path of her own.

4. Kono Oto Tomare!

Tokise High’s Koto Club is at risk of disbandment, unless some new members join. Kurata Takezou, the club’s president and only remaining member, gets new unlikely freshman members: hot-tempered Kudou Chika (rumored to be a delinquent), two-faced Koto genius, Hozouki Satowa, and three frivolous friends of Chika’s, Adachi Saneyasu, Mizuhara Kota and Sakai Michitaka. Together, they discover the enchanting music of the koto and the sound of their hearts.

So this is currently my taste, I hope somebody can send me some more recommendations :)

Chikawa + Love Languages (part 2: Acts of Service)

Warning: This post (and all related ones) will have Spoilers all the way up to the most recent translated chapter (112).

Part 1

2. Acts of Service

This language is for people who value actions over words. You can tell someone you care for them all you want, but do your actions reflect that? Or maybe you don’t have the words to explain your feelings properly, so you try your best to make it clear through acts of service.

This one is a pretty prominent one for Chikawa, as they’re both rather internal people who have been burned or otherwise disillusioned by other people’s words. Chika, in particular, uses this a lot, and not just with Satowa. I consider this his primary love language specifically. I stated in Part 1 that he was a Man of Action, the king of showing not telling.

Even early on, when their relationship was at odds, we see how each of their actions towards each other affect their relationship in a positive way.

Let’s unpack:

Chapter 4: Tokise goes to an outdoor venue to watch a concert for the song they’re going to perform. Satowa accidentally instigates a group of boys and when they try to swipe or grab at her, Chika pulls her back out of reach.

Chika has a naturally protective instinct, so at this point, this wasn’t anything personal for Satowa specifically.

Chapter 5: When Satowa once again attempts to distance herself from the group after Takezou offers for them to eat together, Chika grabs her book strap and drags her along to the restaurant with everyone.

While she does protest to this, it is a step forward in her forming a softer, less Spartan relationship with not only him, but the rest of the club as well, and she becomes a true friend to them all. It should be noted that Chika, who at this point, didn’t really like Satowa much as a person, had nothing to gain from doing this.

Chapter 11: After staying home sick, Chika was tasked with bringing Satowa’s homework to her. When he finds out she lives alone and is running a fever, he makes the decision to stay and take care of her so she won’t be alone, even staying overnight.

He even cooks her egg porridge before he leaves for school. Though she initially complains about him staying without permission, she’s so touched by the gesture of being cared for she ends up crying.

Their relationship is significantly less hostile from this point, with only mild bickering rather than the hurtful insults from before.

Chapter 13: Noticing that Satowa is isolating herself still, Chika deliberately sets her up with two of the girls from their class who expressed interest in befriending her by “pushing” her out of his way.

Satowa is shy and used to being told that she should be alone, so she was initially afraid to approach these girls herself. When she realizes what Chika did, she gives a grateful smile.

Her and the girls become quite good friends in the manga, even sharing the same class together again in their second year.

Chapter 24: In preparing for their warm-up before their Kuon performance, one of the kotos slips from the wall and falls. Satowa, in trying to protect Chika’s koto, jumps right in the line of fire. Chika then protects her by holding the koto off and landing on his right wrist in a bad position, injuring it.

Though he didn’t state the true reason why his hand was injured, Satowa figured it out and was incredibly touched. She buys him snacks as a thank you in chapter 27.

Chapter 30: During their school festival, Chika and Satowa’s class do a traditional cafe. Satowa has to deal with some pushy boys who grab her wrist and won’t let her leave until she tells them her name. Chika, watching this, takes things into his own hands and pries the boy’s wrist off, gives all his information, such as his name and blood type, and gives the boy the glare of death.

Though Satowa is grateful, she has a hard time looking him in the eyes due to her developing crush.

Chapter 32: Takinami wants to use Satowa’s previous Nationals performance for the clubs qualifier song. Satowa, having a ton of trauma associated with that song and her estranged mother, is deeply uncomfortable at the idea. Chika decides to download the song on his own music player and to help Satowa face her fear of her sound, decides to listen to it with her.

This is a gesture of comfort for her, allowing her to move forward and face the song again.

(She will also repay this gesture back later in chapter 103).

Chapter 33: After assigning both Chika and Sane to 17-string to support Satowa’s solo, the club realizes they only have one available 17-string to practice on that they borrowed from Nishina. Satowa goes to her mother and begs on her hands and knees to borrow a 17-string so that Chika can practice just as much.

Though it could be argued she did this for the club in general, when she sees how happy Chika is with their extra instrument, she gives a soft smile, so it was atleast partially inspired by him.

Chapter 36: A minor one, but Chika’s mastery of the basics at an alarming rate was atleast in part due to Akira’s disparaging comments on Satowa’s teaching in a previous chapter.

He also states he wants to be able to play beside her as an equal and allow her sound to shine to the point that he’s willing to injure his hands.

Chapter 47: In chapter 43, Satowa had handed out charms that she personally made to the club, including Chika. When she reveals that she didn’t make one for herself, Chika writes her name on his so she won’t be left out.

Her expression implies she’s deeply touched by this.

Chapter 52: Upon learning Satowa’s mom showed up to the performance, Chika is the one who leads the search to find her.

He gives a soft smile of relief when Satowa and her mother reunite, knowing how much it meant to her.

Chapter 57: Satowa, with the help of Hiro, decides to make a Christmas cake (strawberry cream cake) for the club because Chika expresses his desire to have one.

Hiro notes that she even specifically chose strawberry and that it’s Chika’s favorite.

Though it was a cake everyone shared, Satowa mostly zeroes in on Chika’s reaction specifically. He’s happy.

Chapter 68: Though it was at the behest of Isaki, Chika actually does take the time and the effort to brainstorm with the flower shop lady over what he can give Satowa on a limited budget to express his feelings.

This effort doesn’t go unnoticed.

Chapter 76: Tokise goes to see the incumbent Nationals champion, Ichiei. One of the students, Luca, hugs Satowa unexpectedly to her discomfort. Chika pushes him off.

Chapter 91: I mentioned in Part 1 how this chapter was a feast for Chikawa shippers, and this is no exception. It was revealed in this chapter that Satowa took the time to frame the ranunculus that Chika got for her back in chapter 68 because she cherished it so much.

Chika is elated at the knowledge that she liked his one flower, the flower that he was previously self-conscious about, enough to frame it above all the others.

Some more minor ones also in this chapter include Chika trying extra hard to be polite for Chiharu.

And also Satowa trying to gather snacks to cater to Chika’s tastes.

No matter what, they’re always subconsciously taking each other into consideration.

Chapter 99: Satowa, on instinct, moves to wipe sweat off Chika’s face when he wakes up from a nightmare. This leads to a charged moment between them.

Though Satowa questions her own actions and is embarrassed, it says a lot that she subconsciously just wants to care for him in whatever way she can.

Chapter 102: When Uzuki shows up, Chika moves to shield Satowa with his body in a protective stance.

Satowa is annoyed by this, but she repays the favor later in the chapter when Uzuki tries to chase after Chika.

Chapter 103: Uzuki leaks a video of Chika’s violent past that goes viral throughout the internet. In a parallel to chapter 32, Satowa offers to watch the video with him so it won’t be as scary when she sees how ashamed he is of it.

Chapter 104: Satowa brings a bento for Chika to share with him so that he doesn’t skip lunch because she notices how the Uzuki situation has affected him negatively.

It’s revealed in an extra as well that she specifically has her mother teach her how to make one properly so she can do this for him.

Chapter 105: Satowa follows Chika out to where he meets with Uzuki and Abiko and records everything from the sidelines so that she has evidence for the police to avoid him being framed again.

At the end of the chapter, after watching Chika get kicked, she intervenes directly by jumping in front of him.

Chapter 106: Satowa spends the majority of this chapter shielding Chika with her own body, much to his horror.

She hugs him tightly in a protective stance while buying time for Tetsuki and the police to arrive.

Chika, after noticing Uzuki come after her directly with a steel pipe, uses his reflexes to switch positions so that she doesn’t get hurt.

Chapter 111: Satowa sits on the sidelines along with the rest of Tokise while Chika confronts Uzuki because while she trusts his privacy in getting closure, she wants to be there for him in case something goes wrong.

Chapter 112: Satowa offering up her sleeve for Chika to hold for comfort because the plane is unpleasant for him.

Chapter 113: Satowa offering him up some rice while he’s in the middle of dissociating.

While Acts of Service starts out largely being mostly acts from Chika himself since that’s his general language to show people he cares for them, Satowa catches on rather quickly and really steps up to the plate in the second half, meeting him halfway to show that she cares for him and loves him through her actions.

Both of them are people who really value actions over words, or alternatively, actions to back up the words, since quite a few of these instances are shared with Words of Affirmation.

Their relationship is very even in showing this particular love language.

A bit of spoiler here, read thru if you want..

Dont say i didnt warn you. Anywaysss... i love the chap since it talks a bit about Chika's dad and ofc my fave Tet-chan then it reverts to being Tokise Koto Club-centered topic again when it talked about how Chika cares for his junior Yoshinaga, the change in Momoyan's overall vibe, and how the club have grown from the adversities they've experienced and judgments they've received from other people. Houtsuki is as protective as ever and we all know how much Chika appreciates it. In the coming chapters, we'll see the growth of other teams too and I cant wait to see how the Tokise kiddos would perform on stage.

Ch.122 Rambling

As I often am, I’ll be referring to tessenpai‘s rough tl which you can find here

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR CH.122 OF KOT!

Finally got around to reading the newest chapter of kot last week (brainrot for another thing has been taking over my life) and it’s just so amazing. Had some thoughts I felt like sharing and also remembered some of the Discord discussions about this chapter too. So, some things that stuck out to me: Granny (Shizune) is still so iconic, just being like oh yeah, thought I heard some people making a ruckus, makes sense it’s the Tokise kids, but also those are her grandchildren. Chika just loves being a grandkid and I can’t handle it. Like, he was so damn happy to be called Shizune’s grandkid, and he literally can’t really have that with actual familial relations anymore at this point. Chika deserves every good parent/grandparent figure he can find. Love Satowa joining the hive mind of the Sane, Kota, and Mittsu, though she still probably has a braincell to herself. That moment where Sentarou’s grandma mentions being in the hospital and just how obvious Chika’s reaction is when you know his thoughts just immediately went to his grandpa, it’s just so painful, and Satowa noticing is so significant.

There are so many instances, especially earlier on in the manga, where we have Chika noticing little emotional reactions from Satowa when something affects her, and so I love seeing that Satowa is also tuned into Chika and notices his reactions too. It’s all coming full circle. And I’m hoping this is also setting up Satowa actually asking Chika about his past. She’s wondered about it before, but a lot of what she knows is from other people, friends who have known Chika for longer, telling her things or things she learned with the whole Uzuki situation. I’d love to see a conversation where Chika opens up to Satowa about it, also because I think it’d be nice if she knew the whole story and for Chika to be able to share that with someone, much as she shared her story with him. It helps to understand one another better, as well as being able to ease the burden of the past a little.

Sentarou’s grandmother almost immediately melting at Chika’s offering to help because she sees the pure intentions despite the bad manners. He’s so eager to do what he can for her, especially once he notices how it might be harder for her to maneuver around a crowd to find a seat. Love that Satowa steps in after he leaves and thanks Sentarou’s grandma for understanding Chika’s feelings. Like, I just so love that, it’s like she’s trying to smooth it over a little and show manners while at the same time genuinely thanking her for not just judging him and actually understanding his feelings. I just, ugh, them. It’s an understanding from Satowa of just how much interactions like this mean to Chika. And Kota looks so serious when he says “true!” to Sane’s statement about how Chika’s such a granny’s/grandpa’s boy.

Tomoe needs to snap the hell out of it, cuz she witnessed Chika being the cutest doing such a pure, innocent thing, helping someone and waving to a young kid as he was doing it, like girl needs to get over it, and I’m excited to see her come around sometime. Just let Chika live and be the sweet grandchild he is in anyway he can be! She seems to be getting it a little, but hasn’t completely broken free of her prejudice. Her memories of seeing Chika interact nicely with people did give me an excuse to look up this moment again though, so that’s nice

Akari deserves all the love and support he’s getting from his friends, both in and outside the club. His friends that came to see him are so sweet! They’re there not knowing anything about koto, having traveled all that way, purely to see their friend play, and that’s so sweet. And love the teamwork of the club and how much they’re supporting each other and especially Akari. Takinami has been such a mood lately, and I love it so much! Like, him trying to buy alcohol a couple chapters ago, and now him overhearing Keishi talking to Akari’s friends and just thinking disdainfully “extroverts” or as is pointed out more accurately “monsters of communication” which I think feels very accurate. Like, I don’t want random people to communicate with me. (Usually well intentioned) monsters indeed.

I love, as always, seeing commentary on the music through Tokise. It still gives little tidbits of the characters while focusing on the music. Even Momoya seemed like he liked the performance so far.

Think it’s cool that Sentarou, even playing alongside 2 17-stringers, has the power and presence to not get drowned out. Like, that was a cool moment. I really don’t want to discuss the last pages. They were simply so painful after such a nice performance and the chapter that got us to care about Akari. This just isn’t fair and my heart aches. Hope for the best resolution next chapter, but it could go either way. He’s a very new player and we’ll have to see if he can recover from this mistake. But just, oof, it hurt to see that. Akari is just so genuine and trying his best, and I hate to see him mess up like this especially when I know he’s gonna feel like he let down his Senpai. It’s just something you never wanna see happen. Especially with his friends watching too. Amazing storytelling though. I’m way more attached to Eidai than I thought I’d be honestly.

So yeah, that’s just a little collection of thoughts that got way longer than I expected.
