Carlos Fuentes: «Conocí a Gabriel García Márquez allá por el 1962, en la ciudad de México y en la calle de Córdoba 48, una casa llamada "La Mansión de Drácula" por su evidente aspecto transilvánico y sede de la compañia productora de cine de Manuel Barbachano Ponce. // Barbachano Ponce era un rotundo y energético yucateco, miembro de la llamada "casta divina" que dominó largo tiempo a la península maya con vastas plantaciones de henequén y trabajo feudal. Desposeídos por la Revolución mexicana, y en particular por las medidas del gobierno socialista de Felipe Carrillo Puerto, los Barbachano debieron encontrar otras hacendosas ocupaciones en la hotelería, el turismo y el cine. // Manolo Barbachano renovó en su momento el lánguido cine comercial de México, cimbrado apenas por las trepidaciones bailables de "Tongolele", Ninón Sevilla y María Antonieta Pons, nuestras caribeñas rumberas oficiales. Barbachano apostó a un cine documental y cuasi documental, directo, sin adornos, en blanco y negro: "Torero", una experiencia de cine-verdad en torno al diestro Luis Procuna; "Raíces", la adaptación de varios cuentos rurales del escritor Francisco Rojas González, y, finalmente, "Nazarín", la película con la que Luis Buñuel volvió a cegar la pantalla, después de un indeseado e indeseable asueto comercial, con las navajas de Aragón y los tambores de Calanda. La historia de Pérez Galdós fue adaptada por otro español, el guionista Julio Alejandro, y situada en un México agrario y agreste donde el cura Nazario intenta hacer el bien, provoca el mal y recibe como recompensa una inmanejable piña» (2007: 8-10).
