Todays rip: 17/04/2024
Psy's End Stylehall
Season 6 Featured on: Transmission Archive ~ The SiIvaGunner All-Star Nuclear Winter Festival Collection
Ripped by Eva Twin
youtube
Alright, so, sure, it wasn't very long ago that I covered a PSY rip, with The World Ends With PSY. But part of why I wanted to highlight that rip in particular other than to talk about The World Ends With You, was to showcase a rip that used PSY's music in an abnormal way for rips, using it in a way we don't really see much of nowadays. That isn't because The World Ends With PSY held some secret ingredient that no rip since has been able to capture, no no, quite the opposite - its because the style of PSY rips we've gotten for a majority of the channel's life, the ones like One Winged PSYcho - V.S. Sepsyrop, like Korean Idiot, and indeed like Psy's End Stylehall, are fucking bangers. PSY is at this point more than just an artist whose music can be made into fun mashups - PSY's vocals are an instrument in of themselves.
And like, I really, truly don't know enough about vocaloid or vocaloid music. I enjoy a Lagtrain from time to time, I love rips like Rolling Start and Willievan Afton Polkka, but its still a niche that's a fair bit out of my wheelhouse. Yet its these kinds of rips that all highlight, to a peasant like me, just what makes the scene tick - the sheer energy in a song like World's End Dancehall feels like the kind of thing you'd ONLY hear through the vocaloid scene. Yet in a way, it doesn't surprise me that I find the music so inherently appealing - it feels as if there's a fair bit of overlap in enjoyment between the art of high quality rips and the art of creating vocaloid music. Both fields are, in many cases, using something not meant to be an instrument, a noise turned music through pitch-shifting and other techniques, be that noise the voicebanks of a digital songstress, or the AHHs and EYYS of a South Korean pop artist. Hatsune Miku is everywhere, she is an instrument for artists to use more than she herself is an artist - yet all of the music featuring her vocals sounds so incredibly distinct from one another. Much the same, again, can be said for PSY.
Like, you'd think one would get tired of the guy after eight years of the same bit, after having annual PSY days where we get nothing BUT rips of the same PSY samples and sounds and bits. Yet each rip manages to sound different from the last, each rip able to find so much creativity in using the guy's vocal samples to ridiculous effect - and no matter how many years pass, Gangnam Style itself still bangs!! The amount of cool shit Psy's End Stylehall in particular does is just too much to list - the slight stuttering on the "Ga-Gangnam Style!!"'s in the song's intro, the constant yet unintrusive presence of Gangnam Style's backing instrumentation, the ways that PSY's vocals are used for both the backing AND the lead melody?? It's nutty, especially in music as chaotic in pace as that of wowaka's (who was also the artist behind Rolling Girl, paid tribute to in Rolling Start mentioned earlier). PSY rips didn't take long to be elevated above just standard mashup material on SiIva, and as late into the channel as Season 6, rippers like Eva Twin were still finding novel ways to use the man's voice.
Like, the way Gangnam Style's first verse vocals play in full at a pretty standard pace, only to suddenly be as if whisked away by World's End Dancehall picking up the pace at 0:49, raising the pitch in PSY's vocals, repeating a segment of the chorus over and over...or the way the chorus has PSY sing alongside his own "ops" repeating as a new form of percussion, on top of Gangnam Style's own instrumentation, on TOP of a layer of "Eyys" in the background - this is the kind of rip that I would just ADORE to see the inner workings of, just how many layers it must've taken to make such a full sound. And like, I've covered Eva Twin on here a good number of times, I still love I'll Face Gay Bowser to death, but Psy's End Stylehall is the kind of rip that leaves me outright amazed at how layered it all sounds. I need no attachment to vocaloid to know good music - and no amount of overexposure to PSY can make his rips any worse. Unfamiliarity and overfamiliarity meet in the middle for a rip I could almost recommend to anyone, a show of SiIvaGunner's sheer quality as of its most recent seasons, and a demonstration of just how deeply its team members care about music of all shapes and sounds.

don't mind me, just gonna have emotions over this performance of "Rolling Girl" that Wowaka's band Hitorie did at the end of the tribute show they did for him after he passed. The voices of the crowd, the emotions and words of his bandmates, his guitar sat in the center of the stage where he should be standing.
Like, I never got into Wowaka's larger catalogue, or Hitorie's, but Rolling Girl has been one of those quietly important songs that I come to with regularity. And I just happened to stumble over this tonight.
I hope he hears every time someone sings one of his songs with everything in them.

okay so writing all that made me realize some of my musical tastes are really weird lol. would you have any recs?
Weird? I guess, but they slap
Bill Wurtz is always fantastic, and Snail House is so vibes~!
Never heard of Heaven Pierce Her before but dagnabbit this slaps. Order is on my Starred playlist now. War Without Reason also slaps, shocking no one.
Ooooh, Tooboe is an interesting introduction to me. I'm jamming to this alright, it's good stuff! Not sure what this genre's called, but I like it a lot.
NOW TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION!
My music tastes are a wild mix. People used to ask me what music I like and I'd just be like "...all? Depends on my mood I guess...?" Se here in no particular order are some faves or recs:
Louie Zong is a big fave of mine. He covers many genres, but my favourites are "I Sing Your Song" feat. Hatsune Miku, and his Mario disco-funk remix album "Let's-a Go!", his soundtrack to a videogame that doesn't exist "Levels", and most favouritest his album "Cozy" which will put me to restful sleep when the anxieties are biting my brain.
Following on from there, I enjoy Hatsune Miku a bunch! My favourite musicians to work with her are Wowaka (who among other songs did "Rollin' Girl", a mood piece about the pressures felt by creatives), and Mitchie M (whose songs include "News-39" a cheerful bop about propaganda, "Ohedo Julia-Night" a pop-disco ballad to the prosperous Ohedo era in Japanese history, "Cutie Angels" an homage to pro wrestling).
Speaking of pro-wrestling! The Mountain Goats album "Beat the Champ" hits hard for me, particularly "The Legend of Chavo Guerrero", which is both a tribute to legendary luchador Chavo Guerrero and insight into singer/songwriter John Darnielle's childhood and his relationship with his abusive stepfather. The Mountain Goats also made the song to get me through 2020! That being "This Year", a ballad of defiance in the face of a cruel world.
What else...
Carly Rae Jepsen! Her album Emotion has a bunch of bangers, but my favourites are "Boy Problems" about a friend who realises she's a bad friend for always venting to her friend about her boy problems without ever listening to said friend, or her album Dedicated which has my favourite of hers "Want You In My Room" which is a blatantly horny and cheerful song.
I have
more. But I'll stop here for now.

Unclosed Human (Kaja. feat Hatsune Miku)
There will never be another person/Who will turn my voice/Into such beloved music/You're the first, and also the best
"Wowaka produced many 'classic' and well-loved Vocaloid songs, the most popular of which include Rolling Girl, World's End Dancehall and Unknown Mother Goose. He passed on in his thirties. This song is a tribute to him, and although the music and art has many iconic Wowaka features, it's also distinctly not him - because his music is so unique, and we truly won't get anything else like his music again."
Sweetie Little Jean (Cage the Elephant)
Has melancholy taken you for good?/You know that I would save you if I could/Watched your laughter turn to tears/Then you vanished in thin air/Well we pinned your missing person’s picture up/On every mother-loving post/How’s it feel to be a ghost?/You’re the one I love the most
"This song is based on a real tragedy that happened to one of the band’s members, where a childhood friend of his was abducted and killed. This song makes me feel so much and I imagine it’s only a fraction of how much pain both he and the friend felt. How can you not get chills hearing the pleads in the chorus, especially when the lyrics change optimistically from bones to breast, then back to bones in a form of crushing acceptance and pain,,,,,,, augh"

didn't think of anywhere to put this since all I did was remix it into this with the original and Baken's piano cover (Click their names to check them out! Please!)
then there's this one that I felt really compelled to make, it's a rough high-quality edit of wowaka's rolling girl. I added in the bwuomp and beeump from the MV and this crowd clip from tiktok from a live concert playing it. I really wanted to hear it cut in just like the concert, so I made this!
I'm sure that this will be taken down by copy-right one way over another, but for what it's worth I've made these because I love the songs.

i remember sometime after wowaka died i avoided listening to unknown mother goose bc i assumed (correctly) that itd be p sad n emotional like. most of his songs had the reputation of being. and i simply wasnt in the right mindset to go thru all that but i ended up listening to it on accident bc i found a cover of it that was really Really good n was (still is) my favorite version even after listening to a bunch of others. like it did things that other covers just didnt seem to figure out how to do that just Felt right yknow. anyway a few years later i listened to a tribute mashup of wowaka doing a self cover of that song along with miku and i have yet to feel anything close to when i immediately recognized his voice as the one that sang the first version of the song i ever heard. and thats how i found out hitorie was wowakas band

Send me a 🎶 and I'll give a song I want to see in Project SEKAI and which group (including Virtual Singer) I think it should go to
Example: "Unclosed Human" by Kaja, Nejishiki, Kasamura Tota, and cillia featuring Hatsune Miku. I think it should be a Virtual Singer exclusive considering it's a tribute to wowaka (and also the tuning is so good as is)

VOCALOID LEGENDS - 2019 Part 3
#473 - Umitagari (MARETU) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 19-04-01, Upload Date: 15-05-02
Originally translated as disillusioned, because that’s what the song is about. Being disillusioned… and wanting to bear something, like a baby, which is what the title actually means. In terms of MARETU songs, this is par for the course.
#474 - Positive Dance Time (Kinoshita) [Otomachi Una, Kagamine Rin]
Achievement Date: 19-04-04, Upload Date: 17-10-12
Probably the song that most people think of for Kinoshita? Astoundingly positive and poppy, the song is heavily inspiring and romantic with that ‘shall we dance’ leitmotif. There is something about Kinoshita that makes it want to sing but hard to cover.
#U-5 - Migi ni Ma Girl (harufuri) [Kasane Teto]
Achievement Date: 19-04-04, Upload Date: 15-01-04
Also known as Girlving to the Right… but that’s so awkward of a name. Harufuri makes nice rock ditties, although the intro to this is odd and long. Teto sounds quite artificial here, which is interesting considering its versatility that is Teto’s strength.
#475 - Violence Trigger (HachiojiP) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 19-04-06, Upload Date: 18-12-23
Another COMPASS song. Tuning is more squeaky than his usual tuning, and he goes hard into his commission songs like his latest commission for ProSeca, and honestly I think he goes a bit too hard. Even the lyrics goes too hard, but not in a disturbing way.
#476 - Clockwork Girl (Drop) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 19-04-08, Upload Date: 18-12-09
Again, another COMPASS song. Drop has some good songs, but I believe they are mostly rhythm games or Touhou songs, because the duo (Drop did the music, Hatsuki Yura did the lyrics) has only one song here. Well, it does its job.
#477 - If you don't play this song a million times, I'll die! (Tamao) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 19-04-09, Upload Date: 17-12-31
One of two songs brought on this list after the death of wowaka, and you can see why this song got on the list. The song itself is perfectly decent, lyrics are what it says on the tin, so there’s nothing to write about. I’m surprised this has a YouTube version.
#478 - Strobe Last (Shiina Mota) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 19-04-09, Upload Date: 11-01-20
Another ‘tribute’ to someone who left before wowaka, and second from the deceased producer. Part of the Strobe series, which are four versions of the same song which evolved with him (the last version will hit the list soon). This is the stripped, tricked-out version. The refined and varied instrumentation is what sells this song.
#479 - Like-Love Climaxitis (Denpol-P) [GUMI]
Achievement Date: 19-04-10, Upload Date: 14-02-13
Koyori’s rock-based love song once again shows up here. The song combines the rock swing beat with a hint of melancholy which Denpol-P is known for. Song is basically about jealousy, kind of a one-sided love thing? It’s what it is.
#480 - Imagination Forest (Jin) [IA]
Achievement Date: 19-04-12, Upload Date: 12-05-19
I believe this is the… I don’t even know what it is. There’s like three versions, okay?!
#481 - Toki Wasure Bito (Shigotoshite-P) [KAITO]
Achievement Date: 19-04-13, Upload Date: 09-04-27
KAITO at its most melodramatic as he is about to die. He dies a lot in his songs, doesn’t he? Almost as much as Len… KAITO’s emotion comes in full here, and he needs it. Why do all KAITO songs sound the same? There’s no variation for him.
#482 - I Don't Care Who, Somebody Go Out with Me (Takkyu Shounen) [Kagamine Len]
Achievement Date: 19-04-14, Upload Date: 12-12-01
Len at its most pathetic. I love it. It’s one of the shorter songs on this list, although it packs quite a punch. I just love all the VOCALOID characters on the PV and well, all the variations are cool to see as well, and easy since this is very short.
#483 - Theater Love Song (n-buna) [SF-A2 miki]
Achievement Date: 19-04-15, Upload Date: 15-02-23
Miki finally makes it onto this list, with one of the more prolific miki producers, n-buna. Miki has a light voice which really fits n-buna and you can see where MikitoP comes from, yes that’s what the name is for. I’m just kind of sad that miki is not popular because honestly miku n-buna can get grating at times. And miki actually seems to sing about something instead of the abstraction of Miku n-buna songs. Maybe it’s just me.
#484 - I-ya, I-ya, I-ya (Neru, z’5) [Kagamine Rin, Len]
Achievement Date: 19-04-15, Upload Date: 17-11-10
Neru continues his funk phase with this groovy song with lyrics about wanting off oneself… well, more about not getting anywhere in life. The infectious melody and glorious use of trumpet amply mask this very depressing and relatable song.

For the Vocaloid thing

And here's a really depressing Miku song. Unfortunately the guy who made this song (Wowaka) is dead, but his memory lives on through the memories of fans and his tributes at concerts.
