So I have learned that I am incapable of picking a reasonable number of favorites throughout this whole process and I even kept an extra song bc I wanted to make the gfx for it. Also the layout. But here are some of my favorites from 2023!

Some thoughts: I still don't know the purki members even tho I was OBSESSED with cabin fever. Busted top song of 2023? Multiple hags had comebacks this year & teen top's tt stood out to me when I was looking back (I don't count exo as hags even tho they are...)! Infinite's & tvxq's cbs were also really good! I still think knock knock by reve should've been the tt of chill kill. Loved my soloists in 2023 (jo yuri, kim sejeong, woodz, b.i, tabber, onew, d.o, kai). Several of whom were new to me. WayV may not be kpop, but their album was too important to me not to list. I joked that my top 10 was just the omy album, but it really was very good. EXO returned!! And we probably won't see them again until 2026 😭 Perfume best debut of 2023 /hj. I still don't technically stan the boyz somehow even tho I tuned in to all of their cbs this year and now know all the members. Also 🕯 pls let a.c.e drop a full album (as a full group 😒) in 2024 🕯and ilu everything I didn't mention but made the top 20. ok enough outta me 🤐

At this point, I am well aware that SM will give TVXQ the bare minimum only when it comes to comebacks and promotion. I also understand that TVXQ are getting older and having hectic schedules is no longer something they can do if they want to maintain their physical and mental health. I know that Changmin has a family now and will need to spend time with them, rightfully so.

Yet, at the same time, I think about how much more SM could be doing with and for TVXQ. Not giving them more activities per se, but better planning the activities provided overall. Better promotion of the chosen activities (seriously, their social media manager needs to be fired, they suck at their job) is also something that needs to be looked at.

I felt their 20th anniversary was promoted alright - but the parts that were lacking were glaringly obvious. Example - their 20&2 tour stage sets, cut scenes, and outfits. I was not impressed with the outfits, they never seemed to mesh well together, seemed ill fitting, and appeared slap dash. Very few costume changes as well too. The stage was BARELY decorated, the back screens were all that were dynamic...stage layout and staging of performers was basic. Cut scenes....there was like...one. Just one....in the Circle tour we had all sorts of cut scenes and innovating staging, beautiful costumes, dynamic lighting. Like when comparing the two tours, Circle obviously had more budget, more creativity, and more care behind it.

I am shouting into the void I know. I just hate seeing TVXQ getting so little with how long and hard they've worked.

Maybe I'm just crazy and negative. 🤷‍♀️

So hard to rank, so I’m honestly just going off of vibes right now haha:

Romeo - just so good from start to finish

The Story of Light - a true, cohesive, no-skip piece of art

2009, Year of Us (underrated haha)/Misconceptions of Us - so weird! Love them both.

Everybody - this was lower, but then I started listening to it while doing this ranking and immediately moved it up. It is so awesome. Everybody honestly was just a weak single, but the rest of the album is excellent, the styling was great. I may not be Everybody’s biggest fan, but it’s iconic for what it was lol. Onew windmill this is for you!

Married to the Music / Odd - for the rest of the list albums are getting knocked points for having too many ballads, but this album has some of my favorite ballads so it’s a plus here 😂

Don’t Call Me / Atlantis - no skips! Feels blasphemous to put Body Rhythm this low.

Boys Meet U - this is the only Japanese release I’m including - I love it that much haha.

1 of 1 / 1 and 1/Amigo- 1 of 1 era was so stylish and fun, and Prism and Shift I think are game-changers and honestly some of their absolute best tracks. Some sleepy tracks on that album though. Amigo’s like fresh early SHINee sound is so good - so twinkly 90s boy bands/r&b you know lol.

Sherlock - Sherlock is iconic, but I never revisit the songs beyond the trio. Stranger and Honesty are also amazing.

Lucifer / Hello - when it’s good, it’s so good, but Hello is kind of plagued with So Many Ballads lol. But it does have NCT blueprint Shout Out haha

Everything else

I may revisit this - I went really out of my way to get a copy of Lucifer, so I don’t really know why it’s not higher for me rn lol. One day I’ll further break this down by album and repackage separately.

✦ how i got into them - one of my best friends has been a Shawol since literal day one ‘08. As in she whipped out her old high school portfolio and showed me like a Xanga html spread of a SHINee layout using Replay’s concept lol. I listened to some KPop back then but I was more of JPop/JRock kid and only familiar with SNSD, although I’m sure I heard RDD or something and TVXQ!/DBSK. When I started listening to KPop again a few years ago, she sent me the live performance of Woof Woof and here we are.

✦ which member would be my best friend - kibum has answered my questions on lives three (3) times so we are basically halfway there (just kidding dw I’m not a delulu - I am grateful for his kindness and love towards his fans). they all have great, grounded vibes. Personality-wise, I think I’m most similar to a combination of Jonghyun and Minho.

✦ something i associate with them (or with a bias/any member) - PERFORMANCE! They are the masters of the stage.
