@mouthwash.studio MW.S x ACRE New brand identity for the Acre Team. We introduced motion design through their logomark and a typographic system that categorizes projects based on the coordinates of their global production locations. @studio_yukiko @hkw_berlin Over the next five years HKW will work with artists, scholars, activists and communities to develop a new conceptual line that has plurality as its core, present in its programming, staff, exhibitions and wider discourse and practice. We are chuffed to be part of this journey. We created a logo shaped on the institution’s values for the future, while at the same time resting on local roots. The new logo has become a living, transitory, organic entity – shaping and shifting to embody HKW as a place of many stories and many histories, evolving through the people and knowledges that traverse the house. With its organic twists it also references not only the shape of the building’s roof and the vast biodiversity of Berlin's wild Tiegarten-Park, where it is located. Deconstructing the western letter forms through its fluidity, the logo becomes recognisable for what it stands for rather than for the letters that make it up, moving beyond the dominance of written knowledge and colonial languages. And since the HKW is a place for participation and exchange, the logo is also an opportunity for co-creation: it can be formed and re-formed by collaborators, audiences and artists using sounds, gestures and even facial expressions. Boundaries are shifted, bases are distorted and in this ever-changing semblance a new shape emerges from counter-forms within. Just as the overlapping of voices and languages in the Haus der Kulturen der Welt collectively resonate the new paths of the institution, so does our new identity for it exist only in the intersection and association of its forms. Typographic poster from the 'despair' and 'I read the news today. oh boy' series. The original version was simpler, just playing with the seven letters that form the 'despair' word, but then I accidentally duplicated and pasted the same poster on top of the page and a bit smaller, and... I liked better like this! I think it creates more chaos that strengthen the idea of despair. I also tried in different colours, I like lilac but orange may work better as it feels more dramatic.
