Tyre Nichols: Family & Friends remember as “Beautiful Soul”
Tumblr media
In connection with the death of Tyre Nichols, a Black man who passed away three days after a violent traffic stop, five former Memphis police officers have been dismissed. While paying respects to a man who passed away after a recent confrontation with Memphis police, family members and friends also informed that video footage of the event will be released soon, according to city officials. The circumstances surrounding Nichols' arrest and the precise events that followed his traffic stop have not been made public by the authorities in great detail. Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old father of one, passed away on January 10, three days after being detained and hospitalised during a traffic stop. On Tuesday, family members paid tribute to him in a funeral home in the Orange Mound neighbourhood through tears and laughter. They recalled his laid-back, goofy, independent personality and his love of eating during a memorial service. The more than 50 people present to honour Nichols' life were told by a lifelong friend from California named Angelina Paxton that “The way to this man’s heart was through his stomach.” She claims that they first met as teenagers through their local church, where he introduced her to his passion for skateboarding. She added “He really was a light,There was not a bad bone in that man’s body. He was not violent. He was not crooked… he was a good man.” Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith were the five officers involved in the case who were fired last week after an administrative investigation. indicated they had broken the department's rules regarding the use of force. The department's use-of-force guidelines were ignored by them. Nichols's arrest video is anticipated to be made public on Friday after 7 p.m. ET as Memphis and other cities get ready for potential demonstrations. His family requested any protesters to protest peacefully. Read the full article

If you’re comparing what happened to #TyreNichols to the rabid, frothing, violent Ashlii Babbitt who was shot after trying to break into the Capitol, not only should you lose your platform you should lose your citizenship. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn-clHuvRHa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Jason Whitlock, Your Services Are No Longer Necessary
Here’s a short essay I wrote on the DailyKos website about right-wing sports broadcaster Jason Whitlock and his insane take on the Tyre Nichols murder at the hands of five Memphis police officers. Click the link to read the essay there. Don’t worry. This page won’t get too political. It’s still mainly about my journey as a writer. I will return to your regularly scheduled programming soon. Sorry,…

I have a 28 year old black son. This could’ve been my son, your son, nephew, brother, or friend. I refuse to watch the videos. I have seen enough throughout Black History and media. To be frank, I cannot even keep up with all the deaths as a result of police killings. I often wonder what more can we do. I’ve prayed. I’ve protested. I’ve folded into my career by elevating important topics to help dismantle and disrupt systemic oppression and inequities in hopes that our youngest children can have a better future. But, I know there is so much more to do. In case you’re wondering, what can you do: continue praying for our children’s protection; check in with your Black friends/colleagues/staff; educate yourself on anti-racism, biases, systemic issues, and police brutality; support and take action for sustained efforts in your workplace and community; lift up peer intervention; demand accountability and change in police brutality/culture. (Side Note: Yes, I’m aware that the killing of Tyre Nichols was committed by Black officers. This does not surprise me considering the police culture, systemic oppression in our country, and the role media plays. A suspension/expulsion preschool study noted, white and black teachers were harder on black boys.) There is a lot of conditioning through schooling, socialization, and media about anti-black messaging. So, I will pray for his family. It starts with you. #tyrenichols #changestartswithyou #changestartswithin #policebrutality #policekillings #antiblackracism #ipray #stillpraying #sayhisname #anothervictim https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn8ba21rooL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Since the city of Memphis released videos showing a group of its police officers brutalizing Tyre Nichols, two of the main questions being asked are 1) who the white cop is seen in the violent traffic stop footage and 2) why wasn’t he also fired, arrested and charged with murder in the Black motorist’s death?
It seems at least one of those questions may be finally answered.
According to a tweet by Amber Sherman, a Memphis-based policy analyst and activist, “Preston Hemphill” is “named in the affidavit as having deployed his taser” during the violent traffic stop on Jan. 7. The tweet also showed a picture of a man alleged to be Hemphill.
Hours later, the claim made in Sherman’s tweet was amplified without credit by the Tennessee Holler, an independent news organization covering the Volunteer State.
