Welcome To Football Baby Girl
Tumblr media
NewDad!Christian x Goalkeeper!reader
Just a little thing I had the urge to type out while watching Serie A today and seeing another player carrying their little "player escort" out onto the pitch
This takes place in the Fiance!Christian x Goalkeeper!reader universe I'm writing currently.
Reader wears the No. 1 for the Inter Milan Women and the USWNT
Word count: 329 (it just made me smile ok)
ENJOY! -Ava
Warnings: None (I think), I guess implied p in v (they have a daughter), mild teasing (poking fun at Weston and Tim)
You and Christian welcomed your first child just over twelve weeks ago, a sweet baby girl and he is obsessed. Just as she is very much a ‘Daddy’s Girl’. You and him have been talking about doing her first major social appearance with each of you and after doing some looking into things Christian made a suggestion, “What about dressing her tiny little self up in a onesie version of a team's kit and having her be our escort? Theo did it with his son against Lecce and it was adorable. The press and fans on both sides loved it.”
“Don't you guys have a Juventus game coming up?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Then at least we can doll her up in a McKennie kit. She did cling to Wes when he came in to meet her. She wasn't a big fan of Tim though.”
“Poor Tim. Wes will get a kick out of that though and probably get her a new one every time she outgrows it. You know that right?”
“Yep. And when I battle AC next we'll put her in yours.”
Christian smiles wide, having an even better idea.
“We need to find infant keeper gloves. I've got the derby on the 22nd.”
“Fuck, that's right. But only the keeper's escort wears the keeper kit.”
“I’ll take care of it. I'll get myself maneuvered next to Mike and swap him for the anthem. He'll love it.”
“Let's put Pulisic on the back and see if anyone spots it.”
“I have to say, I'm so happy you decided to use it in matches.”
“Why wouldn't I tie myself to ‘Captain America' in yet another way?”
Christian gives a smiling “mhmm” before kissing you senseless and hoisting you up onto the counter, stepping between your legs and just starts sliding a hand lower when you're interrupted by the baby monitor app crackling to life.
“Looks like Chelsea's awake.” You say before heading upstairs to get her. Christian following close behind.
Feedback Appreciated. This is the first of hopefully many that will be posted for Christian. It technically takes place after they officially tie the knot so I hope you liked that little bit.
Hope you enjoyed!
-Ava

Thoughts on the match: USA v. POR - 8/1/23
-Not good enough. Hate to pile on with all the negativity they’re going to be experiencing but truly not one good performance by anyone on the field tonight.
-I can’t believe Vlatko is going to die on the hill of putting 3 numbers 9s in the forward line and expecting them to create their own chances. That’s an unrealistic system that is clearly not working yet he is hell bent on sticking to it.
-Never thought I’d see the day where I’d be begging to bring Jill Ellis back but here we are. The most impressive thing Vlatko had done as USWNT coach is make me miss my arch nemesis.
-I also can’t believe I’m agreeing with my second arch nemesis (Carli) that these players don’t seem to be serious about this tournament. To be smiling and laughing after a result like that is wild to me. I’m not saying they should be devastated but after a loss like that, I’d expect every player to be back in the locker room as quickly as possible. Prep for the next match starts at the final whistle of the current one. And they have a lot of work to do.
-Personnel-wise: Ertz has to move into the midfield. There’s no one in the midfield that can maintain possession or play strong. We have 3 number 9s up front that are useless without service and if we’re not going to have width up front the only way to get them the ball is through the midfield. Cook would be fine in a center back spot, especially with a defensive 6 in Ertz.
-Overall: that was as bad as it could’ve been and I don’t think it’s going to get better. But we go again. See you guys Sunday.

I feel like the Kmew to West Ham move happened so fast! Guess that confirms Sam is staying at Chelsea. I’m so glad they can finally live in the same country now 🥹 it’s been a long time coming
yeah i saw it coming for them both to settle down somewhere… it’s kinda weird for me to think about sam renewing just bc i feel like she’s been at chelsea with emma the whole time and i can’t imagine her there without her lol
but i’m glad she is because she looks v happy there and they’ve got such a good group of girls
kristie to west ham also seems like a really good decision for her both development and recovery wis… hoping she might get a opportunity with uswnt camp :)

For all the "I woulda . . . " and "he shoulda . . ."s we've been seeing in our community of rabid trash Pandas for The Team, we rarely see the acknowledgement in the press or among the fans that being the head coach of the USWNT is an impossible job. Jill Ellis was perhaps the most successful, and everyone hated her and second guessed her and she barely survived a player mutiny. And here we have Vlatko. Turns out he was right for the job. Or he wasn't ready. Or he tried something he thought would work, and it didn't. And maybe he thought it would work if he gave it time, and it didn't.
Despite the easy feeling of satisfaction we get from second guessing his methods and choices, I don't hear that a lot from people with senior level coaching licenses. Claiming that the US Soccer Federation wouldn't know it's ass from a hole in the ground conveniently ignores that they are the governing body of the most successful women's team in the history of the sport. They've picked some winners. I doubt they chose Vlatko for capricious reasons.
But, let's be honest, it didn't work. He was right to resign and if he hadn't the Federation would have been right to fire him. But we fault the individual when in fact it is the job, the impossible job of being the Head Coach of The Team, that is to blame.
The very, very best that Vlatko could have done is "meet expectations." With the whole entire world gunning for his squad, gnashing at his heels, looking for any angle to tear him and his team down the absolute pinnacle of his performance would have been, "doing as well as the last one."
The collective expectation was that he notch at least one USA v. Thailand blow out victory in the World Cup. Most qualifiers have the expectation of winning ONE game, scoring ONE goal, having a close loss against a major team. Anything short of 8 clean sheets would have been sub-par, for Vlatko.
Oh, and he had a young squad (thanks, Jill!), and injury prone veterans. And injured stand out players. He was playing against a world that wanted it more this year. Was it lack of vision, lack of passion, poor coaching and strategy? I don't know. I wasn't in the locker room or in training. I haven't heard that he is definitely not invited to anyone's wedding. We get to go on with our lives after he loses. He has to quit his job. And he knew that going in.
I didn't like his coaching (where were those subs???) but I didn't have the information he had, nor the pressure. I can see it being really easy to duck up at an impossible job. He probably didn't do his best work and will have to sit with that the rest of his life. On to the next. Here is hoping Twila knows what she has gotten into.

USA Exit, Quarterfinals
I wish I had made separate blog posts about these, but my travel back to the USA was overwhelmingly nuts and jet lag has hit me hard, so just pretend this is two separate posts.
USA Exit
In Round of 16, team USA was heartbreakingly eliminated by Sweden in penalty kicks. Ironically, it was the best game that the USWNT played the whole tournament, but even their best was not enough to make the difference against Sweden and their keeper Zećira Mušović, who made 11 saves (most in one game in the world cup so far) to keep the scoreline 0-0. The final penalty kick that gave Sweden the win was almost saved by USa keeper Alyssa Naeher, until goal line technology (7 cameras located around the field) determined that the ball had crossed the line with a millimeter to spare. A SINGLE MILLIMETER.
It is the first World Cup ever where the USA did not get a medal. People have a lot of opinions on why. Some people blame the coach, who will probably be fired just based on the result. Other people (idiots) blame the team themselves, saying they focus too much on money and advocacy and not enough on the game. These players have worked their entire lives to be on this stage, and often this is the only chance they get. It is insulting to these players to say that their singular focus is not winning the World Cup.
As with a lot of things, the real reason is…it’s complicated. The USA did look disorganized and unprepared in the group stage games, and while Coach Vlakto Andonovski definitely does hold some responsibility, his player pool was also affected by major injuries, and he inherited poor long-term planning strategy from US Soccer. After the 2019 World Cup and the 2020 Olympics, there was not enough done to transition the team from relying exclusively on its older players for goal production. Of the 9 scorers for USA at the 2019 World Cup, only 3 of them were starters in the 2023 World Cup, and only one of them (Lindsay Horan) scored a goal.
As we have also seen this year, this is the World Cup of Chaos. THREE debutantes made it to the knockout stage, while Germany, Brazil, and Canada did not. Teams are better than ever, and can finally challenge the teams that have been considered elite in other years, including the USA. This is a good thing.
Quarterfinals
Spain v. Netherlands
Spain and Netherlands both faced easier opponents in the round of 16, Spain taking down Switzerland and Netherlands taking down South Africa. Netherlands has played more consistently over the course of the tournament, and although Spain has shown some really good moments, I do think their 4-0 loss to Japan is indicative of problems against high-ranked teams, and so Netherlands will likely win.
Japan v. Sweden
Of all the games, I think this is the quarterfinal game that will produce the winner of the World Cup. Japan has been on fire, and has shown that they can win against teams like Spain and Norway AND make it look easy. Sweden fought for their life against the USA, and won; they can use that momentum against Japan. Their keeper Mušović is finding her rhythm, and will be a bigger challenge to Japan than any other keepers the country has faced. My pick for this game is Japan winning, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sweden gets the upset.
Australia v. France
France had an easy win against Morocco in the round of 16, scoring three goals in the first 24 minutes, but only one goal in the rest of the game. Similarly, they had an easy win against Panama in the last group stage match, but were held to only 1 goal in the second half. If France continues to have weak second halves, they could struggle against Australia. The host nation pulls massive crowd support at every game, and has put together strong wins against Canada and Denmark. I think that Australia will use their momentum to put together a win against France.
England v. Colombia
This should be the most predictable result. England should dominate. But they went to penalty kicks against Nigeria, and had close games in the group stage. Colombia beat Jamaica in their round of 16 game, and beat Germany in the group stage, but in both games Colombia was struggling, and many people are saying that it is pure luck that Colombia have gotten to this point in the first stage. I tend to agree, and think England will win this.

Whom else survived the lightning delay and finished up this weird ass game??
Anyways.
USWNT V COLOMBIA (Tuesday edition)
I love Alyssa Naeher. She’s the best. That save 😍
The backup back line with Huerta, Sonnett, Girma, and Pickett was really solid.
Huerta with the CROSSES, the forced own goal. She’s settling into her place comfortably and I love that for her.
And then Kelley coming in to just continue the right back goal supremacy for the game. Good shit.
Pickett with her first cap!! She did great and her crosses were excellent as to be expected from her.
I… really liked Sonnett and Girma together. Girma was this calm, Becky-esque final defender which I think relaxes the whole line. Sonnett’s passing into the midfield was extremely precise and it seemed like she was asked to play this CB/6 flex position. She was challenging the 50/50 balls in the middle and had a lot of success stopping any play from starting. A v classic, look how a player does when they play their preferred position.
Rose and Sanchez are very very very fun together and I’d love more lineups where we can figure out how to get them together. However, I do think the pair lacks a physical presence. They obviously have the foot skills so it’s not a huge problem, but it’s a factor. Sanchez had a quieter game. I think consistency is going to be v important for her. And feisty Rose with a card.
Lindsey… let’s say, if I had a professional coaching license and was in charge, she would not be playing. Her knee is clearly not okay. It’s held together with bubble gum and paper clips. Her running speed is slowed down and she’s clearly backing out of tackles. It’s a self preservation play that’s so unnecessary when she could instead be resting and rehabbing. Thankfully, Colombia wasn’t pressuring to a point where she was allowed to play make without people crashing into her.
and all this 6 nonsense. We don’t have one. Julie is pregnant and Andi isn’t healthy enough. Why we are not trying other formations is BEYOND me. 4-3-3 is not the end all be all. And to be honest, between club, high school, and college, I never even played in that formation. We don’t need double CB’s. Put Alana or Sonnett or fucking Becky at a stopper. Play North Carolina Courages weird ass box midfield. Stop trying to make fetch happen.
Kristie was about to fucking fight at the end of the game and lololol. The fact that Sonnett sprinted in to pull her away is even funnier. About her actual play? She’s also not a 6. Though she did serve the best diagonal long balls.
Hatch also. Starting fights!! Go Mormon go! Hometown brawl!
Alex should have been involved in more national team camps earlier in the year. She’s on fire right now in club. There’s no explanation for her play other than a lack of chemistry. And having Pinoe barely counts because 2022 Pinoe and Alex are NOT the same as 2019 Pinoe and Alex.
Midge was fine. She had very bright spots and other moments where it made sense why she came off at half.
Mal was the best player driving into the box, hands down. Finishing? Could use a little tightening up. But hey, she didn’t shove a photographer today. Proud of her!
Trin had great energy. She’s going to be a PROBLEM for international defenses in the future.
Korn sure was out there being tall!! She had trouble settling in, which is fine. She’s on cap 2, she came in late and there was a delay.
The team disconnect down both sides came down to chemistry. Crystal Sam Lindsey Pinoe Tobin Press Kelley. Those lineups had this innate connection. The chemistry was so obvious. Pickett Sanchez and Pinoe and the opposite side of Huerta Rose and Midge simply did not have the vibes.
I’m not a coaching expert but we gotta click some more pieces into place before I could be confident we’d win a major tournament with this squad. BUT TRULY, with everyone out with bébés and extremely rude injuries, it’s not the full squad yet.
Big whatever though. I still love these players and will still scream at my TV at midnight!

Hi I’ve only been watching the USWNT for a few years. I know people didn’t like Jill Ellis but I’ve never known why. Can you explain why? Can I also hear more of your/people’s feelings on Vlatko? I really only realized recently other people didn’t like him (I always had a weird feeling about him).
hi anon! There's a lot to say on JE. I'm not sure where you even start. I think one of the biggest things were simply her tactics. JE "experimented" A LOT, and in a way that felt like she was pulling names out of a hat and hoping and praying that it worked. With 2 World Cups to her name, it seems like it all did work. But, it certainly wasn't her doing. US had the skill & experience during her tenure, which helped to counter her tactics. As is always said, "we won in spite of her, not because of her." There's also the treatment of several players over the years....And JE had favorites....Christen Press was certainly not one of them....Plus, did JE ever realize that players age, get injured, retire? 🥴
Vlatko? JE had wild tactics, made decisions only she knew, but she did it all with a stacked lineup with enough to experience to cover up her errors. Vlatko? He's the same, except he's not working with such a stacked bench. He's working with a team in transition (see the age/experience gap?). He's got all these veterans and so many new faces. He has to figure out a way to unify them and get them to work cohesively, but he hasn't. This team is playing exactly like that. There's no communication, no creativity, no chemistry. You can see the gap on the pitch, which speaks volumes. You're not watching a "team." You're watching fantastic individuals play with other fantastic individuals.
Also, JE knew who she had in her arsenal, how they played, where they played best, etc, but she just ignored that and did what she wanted haha. Vlatko? I'm not sure he knows who he's working with or how to utilize them. Especially, after that US v NED match, I'm not sure he knows there's 12 other people on his roster. Vlatko also refuses to adjust lineups & formations! Went from VIET to NED with no adjustments tailored to the opponent? What?!

there was a soccer player who recently played her first match and scored her first goal for the uswnt. someone v. deliberately searched her twitter account for the n-word. i’m not excusing her use of a racial slur. the tweets were almost a decade old though from when she was like 15.
this is a smear tactic that they’ve obviously had a lot of practice with this year. apparently women can only truly have something terrible happen to them if she meets their criteria. but those goalposts are ever changing.
Yeah it’s just crazy because you’re right. Someone saw my story and what I had to say, went to my account and keyword searched a bunch of shitty words. I was thinking about that earlier, like. What is wrong with you????
