How do I search for books? What is the website
Hello! You can search our catalog from our homepage at https://uwm.edu/libraries/special/. If you want to continue searching once you're in the library catalog, click the dropdown next to the search box that says "everything" and change it to "WI Historical Society and UWM Distinctive Collections." You will then be able to limit the location to just Special Collections using the options on the left.
If you're looking for more images of books, however, you can search our Tumblr site using the search box at the top left of the page. Most of the books in our collections aren't digitized and only some have been partially scanned or photographed and posted here.

Week 1 About Me
Hi, my names Luis Martinez, I was born in Waukesha which is about 30 minutes away from Milwaukee, I currently live in the South Side of Milwaukee. I am sophomore at UWM majoring in DVC (Design & Visual Communication). I love to play soccer, listen to music, and just hang out. I’m really shy person at the same time though, but as you get to know me I’m just this chill/genuine guy. A couple interesting things about me is I am big into music and am inspired a lot by artists that bring a strong visual component to their music. I’ll usually spend a lot of times just laying down and listening to music for about 3 hours straight. If your ever down to go play soccer at intramural I always need players to play with. In general, I just love meeting new people and experiencing new things.
Graphic Design has been a hobby ever since I was a sophomore in high school because I took a class called Digital Illustration & Graphic Design I and after taking that I loved making things digitally. In that class we would usually make things for the school. For example, business cards, posters, yearbook covers, logos etc. I created a business card for the engineering program and the school liked it they did use it. Also, I did make a logo for Auto program and they used it as well. I took the class until senior year where I took Seminar which was basically just being like a TA and helping the students who took the beginning class. I already did take Digital Arts at UWM which was so much fun. Hopefully the skills I acquire through this class I can carry on to use to guide me through my college “career”.
Another hobby I have is I love to collect records/vinyls, its been a hobby since High school, I love to collect regardless if they are oldies or music from this generation. Even though they cost a couple bucks I still love to collect and listen to them on my free time on my record player. My favorite record I’ve bought was by my favorite band Hippo Campus and when you see the vinyl its not your classic black color its gold and has cool designs on the record.
I recently purchased a MacBook & Wireless Beats, these purchases that were heavily influenced by design as Apple is so famous for. This is my first laptop but I could say it’s lighter than an iPad because in my high school they gave us iPads to use. It is also designed differently than other MacBooks because this one is the pro so it is heavier that like the Macbook Air. My laptop has an awesome display perfect for digital design and photography that will benefit my studies at UWM and my personal projects.

Early 20th Century - Popular History
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the early 1900’s a lot was going on in the United States. There were world wars to worry about and finding equality for everyone. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s women showcased their desire for female enfranchisement by wearing a yellow ribbon on their left breast and their male allies would wear a yellow ribbon on the lapel of their coat. In the Men’s League for Women’s Suffrage archival photo, which is part of the New York State Women’s Suffrage Exhibition Collection and holds 49 other documents, you can see the men who are allies of the women wearing the yellow ribbon on their coat lapel as they carry the banner. Theorists at the time analyzed the resurgence of the Suffrage movement of the 1910’s and how their message meant different things to different people. The image in particular that comes to mind when thinking of different perspectives of the Suffrage movement is the anti-suffrage perspective. The Women’s Suffrage Postcard demonstrates the point of view of the anti-suffrage supporters who firmly believe that voting is and should be restricted to men only. The postcard is part of the Dovie Horvitz Collection which is a collection of 1,173 images. These ideals may come from a threat to the patriarchy and to the sex gender system and the normal everyday roles of genders, resulting in this perspective of the suffrage movement that was anti women’s vote.
Uncle Sam is a prominent figure in United States culture and war propaganda. The creator of Uncle Sam is known by the name of, James Montgomery Flagg, who saw himself in the mirror and that’s how he came with the idea of Uncle Sam, the characteristics at least. The positioning and actual portrait of Uncle Sam was inspired by Alfred Leete’s recruitment poster for the military in England. In the ad, Advertisement for Liberty Bonds, Uncle Sam is used to motivate citizens to support the war effort by purchasing liberty bonds. Ironically enough, Flagg’s method of getting people to purchase bonds was by offering free portraits to anyone who bought $1,000 bonds. The ad is part of the Roman B.J. Kwasniewski Photographs Collection which is originally located at UWM Manuscript Collection.

Memorial Day
On this 2023 Memorial Day we present a Civil War-era uniform designed in watercolor by Milwaukee Handicraft Project (MHP) costume designer Mary Holan and scanned for our digital collection Wisconsin Arts Projects of the WPA from volume 1 “Period - Men” of our Costume Design portfolios, which were produced between 1935 and 1939 by artists working with the Federal Theatre Project. These original costume designs were created by MHP's costume design group for use by local theater and school groups. The designation "School Board" written in pencil at the top of the image seems to bear this out.
Also written on the front is "Infantry Overcoat Union Army." Because of its color, it looks more Confederate to us. On the back of the plate is written "Pageant of America v7," which we believe refers to volume seven, "In defense of liberty," from the 15-volume pictorial history of the development of the United States, The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States, edited by Ralph Henry Gabriel and published by Yale University Press from 1925 to 1929. We checked the digitized collection of The Pageant of America at The New York Public Library, but could not find the source. So, we will take the Union designation at face value to represent U.S. fallen service members on this Memorial Day.
The MHP was founded in 1935 by Harriet Clinton, head of the Women’s Division of Wisconsin’s WPA to help unskilled women laborers provide income for their families. Clinton hired Elsa Ulbricht, an art professor at the Milwaukee State Teacher’s College (one of UWM’s predecessor institutions), to direct the project. The MHP hired around 5,000 people in total throughout its highly successful seven-year existence. Read More about the Project.
The Wisconsin Arts Projects of the WPA digital collection was made possible with generous financial support from The Chipstone Foundation.

The UWM Archives contains many collections relating to African American struggles in Milwaukee, but stories and voices of black excellence and joy are often left out. In archives, this is known as an archival “silence.” Meaning, documents we have do not adequately cover all parts of the story and history. This is because the history of archives focused on capturing perceptions and voices of those with power, which has been predominately white and European voices. Today’s focus is UWM’s Black Student Union publication, Invictus. Invictus was the longest-running Black Student Union publications that started in 1977. It featured poetry, news features, and profiles that highlighted black student’s perspectives and experience on campus in contrast to other news outlets and editorials. This page from November 2, 1977 covers a variety of topics: class content, others criticizing the gossip column, and letters from students who experienced racial profiling on campus. This issue also criticizes the Milwaukee Journal for painting UWM in a bad light without acknowledging that the journalist who reported and wrote the article also graduated from UWM. To see and read more issues of Invictus visit our digital collections website and search “Invictus.” —— Post made by: Intern V #uwmhistory #blackstudentunion #milwaukeehistory #uwmarchives #studentnews #uwmblackstudentunion #uwmstudents #wisconsinarchives #milwaukee https://www.instagram.com/p/CoK2BSMOw6N/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

6 - Maps
The collection of Public Domain maps that I used in my book. Most were sourced from the UWM digital collection at the recommendation of Kim.
All of these went into photoshop where I made them black and white and made adjustments to ensure that they’d blend in with the background of each page they were used on.
These were collected and added over the course of the project

Critical Reflection 1
Project 1: Oracle
Upon being introduced to project one, we were all asked to work through the DVC handbook made for this year’s students. Many of the exercises asked us to reaffirm our own identity, our values, goals and dreams for the future. The exercises helped clearly define common themes and gave us the space to firmly write down ideas on paper that may have been circling in our heads for a while. I personally was able to grasp a better understanding of the DVC program and its core values while working through the handbook. A significant amount of time was spent unpacking ideas and better understanding my own thoughts at this first initial stage of the project.
Next, students were asked to go on a typography safari and visit the UWM special collections to spur inspiration. I really enjoyed exploring book design covers and the unique page systems found in the zine collection. These opportunities got me to start thinking about the way one interacts with a book as an object. As discussed in class, the user experience became a leading idea from this point on in the project, understanding who we were designing for and why. I began brainstorming interesting ways to keep the viewer’s attention throughout the handbook experience.
The next stage of the design process included exploring pagination, themes and design elements in hand drawn form. I began creating a running list of names for the handbook, finding a reoccurring theme of community to be a common thread throughout many of my ideas. I explored sketches for number cover designs including ideas around: public green space, community gardens, maps, navigation/ compass systems, directional arrows and rockets. I felt as though maps would be worthwhile to explore moving forward into the next phase of digital roughs.
In these first stages of the design process it was crucial to understand the grid diagram and the golden section in order to show information in an organized manner. We were tasked with understanding our chosen typeface and its history. In learning about the typeface, we also had to individually determine the ideal size and average character count according to the Bringhurst readings. Once I had a better understanding of how to make, use and deconstruct the grid; I was ready to explore unique options for my handbook design.

About Face 20 Questions
1. What are your goals or marketing objectives?
To spread a message that healthcare staff need to learn to behave better around customers and patients to make their experience more comfortable.
To provide a fun game that can at the same time raise awareness of a serious issue for the players.
2. Who are your target audiences?
The healthcare staff that are unaware of the fact that what they’re doing is wrong and help them learn what they’re doing wrong and make better decisions.
The patients that are victims of the behaviors doctors with poor bedside manners have made to let them know they are not alone in their experience.
3. What sort of content does your audience find useful or entertaining?
They really like card games, videos, and any sort of services that don’t punish anyone. I was originally thinking about creating a class that can sort out the doctors that have poor bedside manners and either teach them how to improve, or kick them out if they can’t. I later went for the card game because it can still “Teach” with its gameplay without punishing anyone or ruining their career.
4. How would you like to affect the social media conversation (e.g. what would you like people to be saying about you)?
My hope is for people who are aware of my product is to enjoy it and actually become aware of how they should behave in the healthcare business. Perhaps it can not only make them become more aware of their behavior there but also help them be a more polite person in general.
5. Are there any current consumer impressions that you want to capitalize on, challenge or overcome?
I’ve been told by one of my design team members Coe Douglas that the LGBT community have been speaking out towards healthcare in regards to certain “Speaking” rights. I would like to do something similar to that with this card game, and also speak out to neurodivergent people (People with disabilities) since they have their own rights that need to be addressed, especially in the healthcare system.
6. How would you define the brand experience the media should convey?
They should see it as a brand that reveals that they are not alone in the problems they may have faced or be facing in a hospital, since some of the cards in the game documents actual experiences people have gone through, including myself. It not only teaches people how they can behave better but also raises awareness of the fact that it is very much a real thing and must be fixed.
7. Is there any relevant background information, history or other issues relating to your product or brand that you would like to share with us?
Mainly my experience in the Columbia St. Mary’s hospital where I ended up experiencing several doctors that had poor bedside manners. More on this in response to question 20.
8. Is there any market research you’d like to share with us?
Not at the moment.
9. To what extent are you seeking a measurable action on the part of your customers vs. an overall branding experience?
My only goal is for this game to send a message to its customers that there is a problem with the healthcare system in the sense that doctors and patients are not treating each other well and that they need to learn how to show respect in order to keep each other in a healthy state. People may not realize that it’s not just the medicine that helps keep a patient afloat, it’s their confidence and their mentality that also plays a big part in it. The brand isn’t meant to be a monopoly, just a company or a game that’s trying to send a message to society.
10. If you are looking for a measurable action, what sort?  Making a purchase?  Requesting a catalog?  Subscribing to your email list?
As of right now, the only action I would really want is a purchase of the product.
11. Where will the media be placed? Your corporate website? Social networks? Video sharing sites (such as YouTube)? Podcasts? DVD’s?
Social networks like Facebook and YouTube. There’s no need for any DVD’s yet.
12. Do you currently use video on your site or for social media marketing social media? If so, how?
As of right now, no.
13. Do you plan on doing any paid advertising or paid PR to draw attention to this media?
No.
14. What social media and e-mail assets do you currently possess?
I have a Gmail account, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
15. Is there any specific data or metrics that you would like us to collect or measure?
If need-be, definitely reach out to doctors, people who have recently visited a hospital, or anything similar and ask them questions. If they tell you the truth we could gather data on how doctors feel (Capitalizing on why they have poor bedside manners) along with learning how often poor bedside manners happen and how it makes patients feel.
16. Are there any existing marketing partners (advertising agencies, social media marketing firms, PR groups) that we may collaborate with?
My recommendations are Islands of Brilliance and Aurora Healthcare.
17. Do you have any unique assets or attributes that we might wish to utilize in this project?
I have access to Brilliant Studios, which can provide plenty of talented students that can do all sorts of digital magic, along with my own skillsets in video making. I can also provide camera equipment, make title cards for the videos, and direct the video.
18. Are there any video campaigns that you want to share as a reference?
I’ve done some video campaigns for Student Affairs IT Services, the IT department in UWM. They’re quite good and can give you an idea of what kinds of video campaign projects I’ve done before.
19. Are there any mandatories or legal issues of which we should be aware?
Thankfully no. Everything used in the video is royalty-free.
20. Are there any stories about your company that you think would be well suited to documentary storytelling?
For sure the story that started it all, which would be my experience in May of 2019 where I went to Columbia St. Mary’s due to a low blood level, and had to deal first-hand with many doctors who exhibited poor bedside manners. That’s what inspired me to make this game, and some of the things I experienced there are actually referenced in some of the cards.

Adam Hawk and Andrew McConville Speakers
The speaker was Adam Hawk. He is a teacher at UWM that teaches 3D and digital fabrication. He studied at Southern Illinois University for Metal-smithing and Blacksmithing and Memphis College of Art for Computer Arts and Sculpture. He showed us examples of his work and described his work process. He solved problems by looking at them in a 3D space. He using CAD which is Computer Aided Drawing programs to design his works. Some programs he used were TinkerCad, Sketchup, and Adobe Illustrator. He spoke about the benefits of vinyl cutting, laser cutting, CNC Routing, 3D Modeling and Printing, and Vacuum Forming. He showed how to use TinkerCad program and made the Design Entrepreneur logo in plastic. We also weeded the vinyl stickers of the logo.
The takeaway from his talk is how to look at problems and solutions in a three dimensional way. I also liked all the different applications of digital fabrication can have such as for signage, packaging, decoration, wayfinding, and takeaways.
The second speaker was Andrew McConville and he is a UX Engineer at ACCULYNX. He showed us how he and his team’s workflow techniques. ACCULYNX is a software company that runs roofing business’ estimates, material ordering, bill collections, photos, and documents. His job is to create hi-fi prototypes in the web browser. His teams collaborate in design sprints called Agile Design. The design sprints usually last 2 weeks. They choose the jobs that they have an interest in. The team is made up of people with a wide variety of different career backgrounds.
The main takeaway from Andrew is the workflow of his company. I liked the fact there were people with different career backgrounds all working and providing a different point of view on the project. I also liked the idea of the design sprint where you work on a project for 2 weeks and then hand off whatever you have ready for testing.

Week 1: About Me
My name is Sean Linnihan and I am a junior at UWM. In high school I was a Editor In-Chief of the Yearbook staff, which made me fall in love with layout and digital design. I transferred from Carthage College in Kenosha at the beginning of last year, where I studied graphic design and attended the Fall 2016 AIGA Conference in Las Vegas. This event was an eye-opening event for me as I was able to have a lot of the artists I was learning about look at my artwork.
I get inspired by heroes and stories of the profound. It has been a dream of mine since I was very young to be a comic book artist, as that was the most popular form of entertainment for me at a young age. My love for comic art is prominent in most of my work. Artists like Greg Capullo and Bruce Timm have had a particularly large influence on my aesthetic.
and yes, I only buy things that have good design: phone cases, posters, collectibles, etc!
